I totally know the feeling. Having a love-hate relationship with half of your gear is honestly part of the fun.
To the coffee filter: Don't use the stand. Instead let the sack hang into the cup. You don't need a paper filter at all. The mesh is fine enough to hold back the coffee. Pour all the water over it at once, put the lid upon it and wait a few minutes. Then lift back out of the cup and let the remaining coffee pour out. So your coffee stays hot. When leaving the site the last part to pack is that filter. Dig a little hole for the coffee and evert it and clean it with a splash of water. Then hang it outside of your bag to dry up.
This! An extra paper filter into a filter. Why?
I don’t use a paper filter either. When it’s wet I fold it and put it in the bottom of my pot that I boil the water in. My only regret about it is it gonna be messy when you’re trying to clean up the grounds and not scatter them everywhere.
I have the costco quilt and the 40 degree hammock gear tq and yep, the HQ tq is only 2 ounces heavier. I do find the costco quilt very useful though in the winter when my landlord neglects to turn on the heat
You can get silicon fish tank hose and slip them on the handles of the toaks pots.
I went from the regular width NeoAir to the wide version. 25” and totally worth the marginal increase in weight.
ditto... my hubby now has the wide and gave me his regular, which the dog ate the valve but that's another story. So I got the ladies and he has the wide now. The dog got grounded.

unless you're doing a 3 month thru hike it really isn't necessary to sacrifice comfort on "everything". the comfort of carrying 1 lb less won't even matter unless you're on the trail for weeks at a time.
@@Kevinschart I agree. I think sometimes we cut so much that we sacrifice comfort to save 1lb. I’ve learned not cut corners on a goods nights sleep.
I appreciate that you are honest about the fact that even when you like a piece of gear, it can have some cons.
My biggest gear regret was not bringing camp shoes because I was really trying to get base weight down. At the end of a full day on my feet, I just really want sandals. Wearing trail runners even with the laces fully loose is just not the same
I love making coffee! I have been experiementing with the weight of filters and brewers and the most simple set-up I have come up with is to clip a paper filter (can be a double filter but not necessary) to the edge of my cup with two binder paper clips. Works great and I just toss the paper filter and coffee grounds (All biodegradable) in the trash sack. Nothing wet in my bag. Excellent pour-over!

On the coffee drip, I switched over to the Folgers Singles. Quick cup of coffee with a great taste and the bags are easy to dispose of.

Still rocking the Frogg Toggs rain jacket. Has never wet out but you tend to sweat a lot in it so it has its trade offs.
My OR rain jacket wet out last week well hiking and I almost got hypothermia, I learned my lesson to never stray from the frogs toggs agin

I know what you mean about the Ti cup so I bought the GSI Infinity cup to use with the Java drip. Will be taking it on a backpacking trip to the Allegheny National Forest near the Rimrock area this week. I have to have my drip coffee in the morning.
With the jacket … Frog Togs 🐸 brilliant light and has kept me dry in several downpours 👍🏻
So many people have bought the Sawyer Mini and regretted it.
I use a CNOC Vecto 2 liter bag and the regular Sawyer now. The zip closure on the Vecto makes filling it a breeze. I use a 1 pound peanut jar with a drinking hose through the lid which I carry on my shoulder strap and gravity filter my water by hanging the bag, filter, and peanut jar with the tube from a nearby tree or bush while I relax.
I had a prototype Lightheart Gear tent and had a friend sew some webbing between the fly and inner tent to increase interior space and airflow. I suggested the modification to Judy and she implemented the mod into all of her subsequent models.

That's so funny about the mini vs the squeeze. My mini..used as an inline with a platypus bladder and a hand pump..works like a charm.

i always laugh to myself when i see people with those massive accordian foam pads. and i'm talking about 3 seasons camping when they probably aren't bringing it to double up with. every fiber of my being wants to yell at them "BRO GET AN INFLATABLE".
Great video! I think we all have made some bad purchases in the past. I love my GSI coffee maker. I think your coffee gets cold because your using a titanium cup. Titanium is not a good conductor of heat there for it cools down quicker than other metals. I pair mine the GSI Backpacking mug and coffee stays hot.

Thanks for the coffee tea bag suggestion - I tried them on a recent trip to Minister Creek Trail, and they worked perfectly! I was using the pour over, but could never get it strong or hot enough. The coffee-bags were just what I needed to get the perfect cup of coffee in my GSI mug

I have the same problem with my toaks pot, but never thought to make a cosy for it. I started out using the BrewSpoon for coffee in the morning, (I'm in South Africa, not sure if this is available anywhere else) but, moved on to the teabags. It's just easier.

I tend to over-research gear before I buy, but I definitely regret the knockoff "pocket chainsaw" purchase. I couldn't wait to have a legit campfire, and yeah, that thing barely cut twigs. Got myself a Silky, and finally get to enjoy evening campfires...on the rare occasions PA weather cooperates with my hiking plans.
Have to agree with the Silky saw. Works wonders and doesn't take up much space.
Costco quilt: took it once in summer on Timberline Trail, mountain mornings are just too cold for that. Rainjacket: for real reason, like 4 days of rain with no stop, waterproof poncho (summer and used as a summer tent) or vinyl coated poly Jelly Hansen jacket (winter) is the only way for me to stay dry. I save the fancy Gore-Tex for winter snows.
The accordion nightmare can double as a truck or car windshield sun protector. My Costco is good for the couch. That Medaglia D'Oro instant espresso coffee is no joke, I take it in a snack or sandwich size ziploc bag, depending. Usually available at finer grocery outlets, and online. Instantly scalding too ! This one was a knee slapper, thanks !

I had a blue foam pad !ike that , I actually cut it up it made 6 sit pads that I sold them for $12 a piece and bought me a new one with the $$ i made lol

How do you make little coffee bags? What a great idea!
Great video! One thing is that I really don’t recommend any rain jacket at all, because even if it’s the best kind it still doesn’t always work because you sweat or eventually rain jackets wet out. The best thing is a combination of 3 things which always work even if you get wet: 1. An Alpaca wool sun hoody
2. A breathable wind jacket (Outdoor Vitals Nebo is good).
3. A reflective umbrella.
These 3 keep things breathable and always do their thing. Accept you will get wet in a storm, wool, umbrella and wind jacket will cut the chill factor.
Frog toggs
I just got my Xlite home a few weeks ago and went with the large version, went the same way with the quilt, xwide/xlong. Been feeling that saving the few grams on the sleep system will probably just annoy me for the same reasons you mentioned in the vid, glad to hear it from someone else though :D

I found a z-lite sol sleeping pad at a thrift store for like $10. I really like is more than the ridgerest because it folds down into a more sleek and compact shape for storing outside of your backpack. I haven’t used it that many times, but on my last trip it was easy to get out and use to sit on during rest breaks and I was also able to use it under my very thin sleeping pad (the of I was using is a Thermarest that’s 1-inch thick when inflated) to give it a comfort boost.
I kind of understand about the Costco quilt I have one myself that I use in the summertime once in a great while I might take it with me only because of my cousin likes to not pack correctly and like to get extra cold to where cold should not be
So I kind of understand about that one and the pockets with your backpack I understand that one too got to have your pockets for your water but it is still your most go to after all the expensive updates

I have a lot of gear I bought because it was all I could afford at the time, so I don't think it would be right to say I regret it. The one thing I do kinda regret buying is an Eddie Bauer backpacking tent from Target. The price was right, and it's great quality and hasn't let me down yet, but I can't sit up in it, which sucks, especially in bad weather or when it's buggy.
Last year a friend bought me the Patagonia torrent rain jacket and love it. I used a marmot rain jacket for 9 years before it and miss that rain jacket.

They need to make that quilt longer for sure. I'm also 5'8" and its too small. In a hammock it works out though.
NeoAir Uberlite . Biggest regret. Tried UL for Pad like almost all Rest of my Gear . Popped in iceland . 11 days spend uncomfortable sleeping on cold ground . Now use 3x the Weight Sea to Summit Etherlight . Sleeping like a King and with 40d fabric its way more puncture resitant
Tried the pour over on my last trip… gotta agree coffee cools down too much!
So Coffee in the wild: I also bought the Java drip and it wasn't as good as I tought it would be. Mostly my problem was the same as yours, so I searched for a better solution and fund one: look for "speciality instant cofee" and you will stumble upon brands like Swift Cup Coffee which is almost as tasty as a freshly grounded, filtered single origin coffee. One of the downside is it is not cheep, but I only drink these on backpacking trips so its not a big deal. This is one of my luxury items :)

I hear you on the pour over. It’s a PITA, and luke warm at best when complete.
I mostly use instand coffee mix, like Wiener melange ( instantcoffee a littlebit creamer & littlebit coco)
I always use coffeefilter fore pre filtering water when its to brown / green
When the river had havy or chemical industries upstream i use active carbon that i already have to buy for our big tropical fishtank!
I have that blue accordion pad, use it under my REI Flash. Sleep good…but dang, it can be better. I’m up grading.🤣🤣🤣
Ditto to "camp blankets" being aggravatingly too small. I have several REI blankets that I'd love to use camping but they're all like, 6 inches too short. I managed to find that Kelty makes some cheapo quilts like that at just about 6 feet in length, been meaning to pick one up to try it out.. might make a good enough summer blanket.

Bryce, I saw a vid on boiling temps and if you just bring your water to a boil bs letting it boil for even another 60 seconds the temp climbs n climbs. So when I do coffe (via Java Drip) I let me water boil for just over a minute. Also I don’t use a paper filter and it seems to drain very quickly. Just a thought for you.

Rain jacketwise, I've been happy with my Marmot Precip. 10.2 oz. Anything without pit zips is a dealbreaker for me.
I have to have coffee in the morning, I ended up getting the GSI insulated mug. It's light, and keeps it warm for quite a while. I've used it with pour over and plain old instant coffee and it's definitely been worth the extra couple ounces.
My biggest regret, that I love, is my hammock setup. I started with a cheaper hammock that I already had and went from there, trying to save a few bucks. I've since been through multiple bug nets, top covers, suspensions, etc. I probably would have been better off just buying something from warbonnet or dutch that had everything I was looking for. At this point, I've probably spent more than a chameleon or blackbird would have cost.
I love that mug. I use it for cold soaking while on trail because it seals actually amazingly well if you're careful. I also like it for the measure marks - really nice when you want to be accurate like for dehydrated meals. I wish the foam koozie fit around my toaks pot as well, because then it would be absolutely perfect.
I use a Tokes for heating/cooking, but carry of all things, a 24 oz. Wawa easy-go vacuum bottle to keep the coffee hot. It has a screw on cover and the top has a removable cap to allow use of the wide neck bottle. Warbonnet Ridgerunner is well worth the price if you like sleeping flat in a hammock. I really like mine. Getting the underquilt is also a wise idea, if used in the colder months.
They use to make a coffee filter that plugged into the bottom of your fuel canister.

Instant coffee packets. No filters needed. Mt Hagan makes organic instant coffee.
Coffee grounds dry weight: 15 grams per cup
Instant: 4 grams per cup
Are you packing out your spent grounds? If so double that weight at least, and add a few more if you're doing a filter.
A regular aeropress is 181 grams. You can bring enough instant for 45 cups for that weight. I love my aeropress, but when backpacking, I'll use instant 100%.
Power to the short people! Love my Costco quilt but I'm 5'5 when I go to bed. 5'6 when I wake up.

I just joined the titanium bandwagon. Love it. Titanium both adsorbs heat and loses it very fast, though. But I'm "cool" with that.
Where do you buy your tea bags?
A pack that won't carry what you want, a pad that is too small and a rain jacket that doesn't keep you dry....
I could probably shave quite a bit off of my packweight if I just went items two sizes smaller than what fits too.
I have the GSI drip and man, is it a pain when you're making coffee for 2. Love/hate and I'm stubborn so probably will keep using it.
you should look into Turkish coffee, you can just put a teaspoon of finely ground coffee into a cup of boiling water and it's delicious

So the coffee filter you have has a micro mesh. It is not meant to be used with a paper filter. Poor over coffee and then sling the grounds into the woods. Coffee grounds is NOT trash. It's natural fertilizer. So after you sling your grounds rinse and repeat. Way easier to use.

Ounce for ounce all the cottage pack makers charges way too much for accessories, IMO. But they're probably a profit center - and they'd probably charge more for their packs otherwise.

Aluminum has superior cooking properties aswell. If you are doin more then just boiling water Aluminum might be the way to go
They've really jacked the price on the Z-lite up. Also they ended the yellow era, sadly. Now it's a sort of pool float blue. It's ugly now.

you don't use paper filters with what you called a pour over coffee filter !the mesh is plenty filter enough ! the object of using mesh as a permanent filter ,it should dry quickly !
