    Top class video James, glad you pointed out this was a 4 day project on the standing rigging alone!
    Cheers Warren

    i think you are just plain wrong about HF, HF cant be turned off by people 7000 miles away... HF doesn't require an account HF gear is typically user serviceable
    you think starlink cant be turned off you should talk to the folks near gaza, they would assure you that is can be turned off from afar.
    dont get me wrong i like starlink i think its great, and i understand not wanting HF on your boat but HF is the safe reliable option

      I know if l were to do another passage from Australia to South Africa & beyond , HF would be on my list....l believe it's called redundancy...paper charts & sexton for sharpness of mind & fun between crew😊👍

    • @thelastpirate
      @thelastpirate  9 місяців тому +3

      So your argument for this technology is solely "Nobody can turn it off?" That's not a good reason to spend $3k on an ICOM rig. For what? So you can have a backup? Name me ONE person in the last 10 years that was saved on a boat by calling out on the HF radio? Delorme, Iridium, & Starlink are the options, not HF. Same thing with paper charts, they are a dying tech. I'm sorry, but I'm not the one who decided not to print them anymore. I was a Navigator in the Navy, my JOB was to interpret data for dead reckoning on paper charts. I've probably prepped more charts in my life than you have ever seen. Does that change the fact that they're being phased out? I do own a couple sextants, and I've got a digital version of the worlds charts. I'd be happy to share those with whomever would like them. I also have a Delorme in my ditch bag so I don't have to fucking Dead Recon my way across the Atlantic Ocean in a liferaft with a signal mirror and some 15 year old flares.

      &there's more with hf with a ham license you can talk around the world
      &
      And when your mechanical connections cracked and brake along with fracturing the rigging 101 means you're way over tighten them

    • @AustinBoil
      @AustinBoil 9 місяців тому +4

      Even with all the modern technology, HF & UHF/VHF is still employed as backup emergency communications when everything else fails. HF for long range, UHF/VHF for short (line of sight pretty much). There are HF maritime mobile nets still active for those with Ham Radio licenses which IMO every blue water sailor should obtain.

    Since they are having trouble learning and retaining all of the proper sailing nomenclature they need to attach gay terminology to easily remember the proper nomenclature. For example the back stay can be called the bare back stay.

    Thank you very much Captain James, for these clear and informative videos pt.1/2 and pt.2/2. They are in fact perfect tutorials for diy riggers like me. On my trailer sailor 23ft boat, I have to lay down the mast every time I take her home on the trailer. I use the aft lower shrouds and the forestay when lifting and lowering the mast. For the upper shrouds, back stay and a second forestay I use dyneema in the way you have desribed earlier (works perfectly!). Next I will replace the old steel (lower) shrouds and the steel forestay. Very helpful is your advice to use screwed trminals for steel 1x19 wire! Thank you so much!

    Nice rigging job. Yes, I really like the new style pieces for rigging better than the old style. I've had a few failures on the old style on smaller racing boats.

    Dear James, Thank you for this amazing video. Only one think I must share and sugest you, next time you climb to the mast please take a second rope to secure yourself once you are up. There can be the diference betwin anecdot or drama caused by causual and unexpected failure of the main rope that hold you. By the way, great video, thanks a lot.😉

    Your videos are great as always but I miss the intro with ana saying ahoy that was classic.. Maybe I'm the only one anyway the key to spanish pronunciation as in saying ana is to learn how to correctly say the vowels in spanish, once you get that you are literally 80% there as spanish reads as you see it with just a few differences such as the h is silent and a j sounds like an american h.. Cheers

    A benefit to HF is you can have a net with several people/boats and have conversations running about weather, gear, fishing, mechanical or whatever is on your mind. Think of old fashion "party lines" for the phone. Cannot do that with Starlink. Oh, use white electrical tape to cover safety wire and cotter pins, to prevent snagging on sails/clothing/skin, lines or anything else.

    Over tightened rigging causes rigging damage
    5/8should be around 80#
    3/4 about 100#

  • @AndyKopac

    I dunno. I have starlink, but paused it, and still use my HF radio with winlink to get my gribs , weather, email, and check into the nets. The nets have a offshore social piece to them and check ins. I’ve sailed all my life, but did IT for 37 years. Still do HF for the weather and, and mail, and nets. But my antenna is a separate shroud going from the mizzen shroud base to the main head with dynema strops on the ends… Just me.

This is all assuming that it makes it to Hobart safely. I'm nervously excited.
