I've grown jade plants for years. Love them! I find them a very relaxing plant. No fuss, not demanding. Just beautiful. I need to prune mine, but like you suggested, I will wait until Spring. Love the bright sunny intro!🤩😍. Hello Zoey, pleased to meet you.🥰. Great video! Pruning Jade is so important, they get all crazy and leggy if left alone for too long, as I did.😏 I even pruned fat woody branches. Just went crazy. She is fine 😊. Your video gave me the courage🤩😍. She is 18 years old and I was scared. She is so much happier now. Another great one! Thank you.🤩

My Jade plant is huge. It has been in a very low, but very wide, plastic pot for years and is just enjoying it! Every winter I put it next to a small, northern window at 10 degrees Celsius and every year they bloom with many white, small flowers. Due to the width of the large pot, but also due to regular shaping, it is very stable.

The Gollum jade is also a nice one too the usually long stem i do weather about bugs living inside which i give it a regular wash. It can have a lovely colour to it by having lots of sun. Hi Jeff, thanks for sharing your “if life gives you lemons, make lemonade” moment with your jade plant! Very informative as I tend to bump over a plant here and there.... Great to learn more care tips for my jade plant!
With most commercial succulent soils I end up having to add more perlite or pumice. Most of the more famous brands have too much peat moss and some even have pieces of wood in them. There are smaller companies that make more gritty mixes but they can be pricy. They may be worth it if your only have a few succulents or cacti but when you develop a larger collection it is sometimes worth making your own mix especially if some of your plants require different types of a mix. I have found that Jade plants like a little more organic material than other succulents do. They also like to have more water than some succulents. I have some Jade that tend to go dormant in the winter time and require less water. After you have had a few finicky Jades (or other types of plants) you find that they each have their own traits.

Great video Jeff. I had moved my plant and all the leaves are pointing downwards. I am hoping if I move it into better light it will recover. Definitely have a few spots that need pruning too. Your videos are so informative I always learn something. Thanks for all the hard work on these videos
I can’t decide if I should cut back my Jade. The older leaves have fallen off so it’s all bare but the top of the plant is all lush and it will look so bizarre if I chop :( plus I don’t want any more plant cuttings (bc I’m not surrounded by plant friends who would want them) but then I feel terrible for throwing away healthy plant cuttings. If I want it to branch I’m going to have to cut it 😭 ahh I’m just going to ignore my problems and watch you do jade plant chores 😁
Ever think of doing any bonsai with your jade plants? They are classic plants to turn into bonsai. I am taking a cutting this spring from mine and starting one. Great update! 😀
Hello thanks for the explanation about Jaedhave one dead in the same pot and in the ground like a tree and should I take it out and replant it again I’m so scared to lose it it’s a huge I’ve got two the same I have them for maybe more than 15 years and never change the path or the Soil thank you for sale in your video I enjoy it just answer me please
Morning Jeff.. i just finished trimming some cuttings from my string of arrows to try get a fuller pot.. Herein Toronto its actually above 0 today. Thanks for todays information. I have not had a jade in years. Concentrating on my beautiful orchids. They have been my sanity during covid.
Love orchids!!! How many do you have? I currently have 2 phalaenopsis orchids, but there is one in torn on purchasing. the-little-big-plant-co.myshopify.com/collections/tropicals/products/papa-shin-yi-heart-x-hung-sheng-red-apple
Hahaha! I was going to ask you what kind of puppy that was because she looks similar to my schitz zu. Then you answered my question. Such a cute little dog,!!
Good day Jeff. Thank you for this video. You open Windows and doors at -20? When do you know it is time to repot a jade plant? I have a Gollum and I am not sure if it needs repotting or not. No roots showing up at the bottom either. Is there 2 types of Jade? One that grows like a tree and one that grows like bushes? Thank you
Hello Rhode. We finally had temps above freezing where I could finally open the windows lol Jades are usually good at remaining in small pots. If you are watering more then normal, starts to decline or any other signs of needing to be repot then I would just leave it alone. The bush style are just multiple stems jammed in one pot. The single stem ones grow into a tree structure with age and pruning.
Thanks, you have some great tips on pruning and stuff on here! I have a question for you, I would like to know, my plant is very leggy and I am curious if I cut it down will it regrow leaves on the bare stem or will I just have to propagate it from the cuttings and start it over?
Hey Fred. It is tough to give advice without seeing the plant, but if you do make a prune you will most likely get 2 branches from that closest node. On occasion you may get branches/leaves from lower down. Pruning is good for stem strength. I should mention that if it is leggy then most likely your jade isn't getting enough light. Now with those pruned cuttings, definitely plant those back into soil after letting them callous over. Good luck and keep me posted. Feel free to send a picture of the plant to my instagram account if you want @everything_plants_ca
My Jade plant is prolific with putting out babies, but they are all just one stem and none of them branch. How do I get the straight stalk to split and make branches? Should I just cut it down? If so, do I cut it straight across or on an angle? I have a bunch of single stems in one pot - should I put them into their own, individual pots and cut off the top to make them branch as well? Thank you in advance! I’ve been successful with propagating leaves as well. May I ask, what is your reason for not putting some soil on the bottom when you repotted it? Thank you for sharing!! 💜💚🪴🌵
I have a Jade that doesn't have any leaves at the bottom from neglect. Will it grow new leaves if I prune it back closer to the bottom? The place where there are no leaves?
Thankyou, so interesting and helpful. I'm in UK and going to repot my Jade plant in spring. It's in a nice pot but no drainage hole so I never dare to water it as much as it needs because it might rot the roots. Really looking forward to doing it but a bit nervous due to the shape of the pot and the fact it won't be easy to remove it. I was given it as a gift as a mature plant and it's never looked very good. Maybe it will improve when I repot it. Thanks again.
@@EverythingPlants I've repotted it twice since my last comment and done a lot of pruning. It is doing really well and looks like a totally different Jade plant now and I have endless cuttings growing and even sold some as had far too many. I love you videos, they are all worthy of re-watching from time to time. Thanks again.
Hello, thank you for these great postings! I have 14 jade plants and my family thinks that I am crazy! I love them! Over the summer I bought the most beautiful jade plant while visiting family in Michigan. I had a little trouble bringing it across the Canadian border on my way home to New York state. It is huge and I am determined to keep it looking healthy and beautiful. I bought a grow light because I live in upstate NY and even in the south facing window, my plants get leggy. Any recommendations on the number of hours of exposure for the plant light? It is a full spectrum and I have it about 12 inches above the plant. Also, what type of fertilizer do you recommend and when are you fertilizing? I am so grateful to find your site! Thank you!
I share your love of Jade's.... Even though others may not. I have all of my grow lights on timers for 14 hours a day. For fertilizer the only one I use is Dyna grow foliage pro.
Hello live in Canada and a report my plant the Jade but when I it’s so hard to take it out of my butt when I took it out at the roots it’s showing and I planted with the good soil cactus I watch you when you took it off from the part you left the way it is but mine it was maybe 25 years and never moved it so it’s gonna be okay it’s big huge three I took so many things from it I prune it So it’s gonna survive thank you says tell me the truth I love that plant thank you
Great video. We also had to prune a very old plant like crazy in the spring time and we‘ve put them all in one big pot. Now they have all grown to the mineral mix (I haven’t put them into soil). Now I have a mini forest. But thinking about it long-term. It’s not really possible for them to grow like this, right? What would you do? Separate them? However I couldn’t really plant 20+ plants in the flat hahaha
I have one large jade plant like this as well. The only thing I would do or recommend is perhaps space them out a bit so they can grow without getting tangled up
Or sit the pot of that jade plant down into a heavier, wider terracotta pot. Unless you've already repotted that is. I love, love, love jade. I am currently propagating a bunch of leaves right now.
Just found you channel. Great content thank you. My Jade's have white specks on the leaves, we have well water with lots of minerals which I think is causing the problem. Would you change the soil and use bottled water? I have a ton of Jades! TIA
Sorry about your jade plant. Glad it wasn’t too bad. I have many succuients in my plant collection and I think they are the easiest plant ever. Almost indestructible. 😂 Good tips. Thanks Jeff!
Do you have a video of pruning a multi stem jade pot? I have four stems two older and larger, two younger and thinner and shorter. The two thinner are not branching but the two larger are.
I'm waiting on some cuttings in the mail. When I get them do I pot up right away ?and not water for how long ? I'm thinking stems should be 10 inches tall an variegated. Thanks
They should be good and calloused over, so yes pot them up in a well draining soil mix. Lightly water near the cutting and don't soak the entire pot because there are no roots to soak up all that water.
what happens when the nodes develops roots is that something to worry about? The leaf is still stiff with water but maybe I should water it more to prevent these roots from coming from the nodes?
I'm sp sad, my big Jade died this winter. And actually a few succulents died this way - I had them closest to my little furnace that heats the place, because there was no more room. The soil was so dry, and the leaves of the Jade and succulents so wrinkled that I was watering them like twice a week, and even though the water was evaporating, it still rotted the plants from the stems. It was a really weird combo of needing water, despite being dormant and not wanting water. lol
Oh lord? Yesterday I transplanted 8 plants h of which I took from water and put in perlite just to train from water to a more solid before I put them in soil in a month or so. I live in North Carolina and we don’t really have a winter and so my plants are getting pretty root bound. They continued to grow the past few months. I also propagated several of my vining plants bc they were getting leggy. I hope one day to have a jade plant such as yours!
Hi, I enjoy your videos. I have Jades that are 35 years old. I stated with a small cutting. Now I have 5 large plants but have not pruned properly through the years. How aggressive should I be and us now a good time to prune or later in season. There are lots of withering type leaves. Really want to save and bring bath to health as many as I can. Thanks for any suggestions.
Hi my jade plant leaves are flat. But green. I water it once every month. It's in a medium pot. Should I put it in a smaller planter? It's lost a lot of leaves. Or should i wait till spring?. Its winter now in the east coast.
You say that the jade grows slower in the winter, what if I use grow lights, will the jade grow grow faster and not slow down even if I was to prune it? My jade is under a grow light.
Eyes on that dragon bone cactus in the background..... Question? Do you spend $$ on specialty pots? Cause not only would that nice big jade would look nice in a longer bonsai style pot, but it would increase surface area so it doesn't tip over. You mentioned it in the vid, just curious as to whether you might get one :)
@@EverythingPlants Ok Thanks for replying back on both replies I don’t really use that liquid fertilizer I came up with something completely organic on my own but I’ll try that..
A couple years ago my 12 year old jade just died, no matter what I did for it I couldn’t save it. Last year I got a new one and the exact same thing happened. I got it late fall so I didn’t think much of it but this year I got 2 new jades beginning of summer and they did great all summer but as soon as I brought them in they literally started dying off just like my original jade did. I don’t know the issue is. For the life of me I can’t figure out what is going on, I grew my original plant with great success for 12 yrs and changed nothing when it dropped dead, same goes for all the new ones that’s died since. The leaves just started dropping, they wasn’t over watered or to dry, they aren’t in overly large pots or too small, I use a commercial cactus soil just as I have for the last 15 years, this year I’ve even treated the 2 I have dying for mites and parasites in case that’s the problem and still they continue to drip leaves. I’ve now moved them to a room that isn’t open to the rest my house to see if it’s my propane heater effecting them. I love growing Jade trees but I’m about to give up trying cause their just dying off. If anyone has any advise please let me know, I just don’t understand how I changed nothing and after 12 years of growing a beautiful Jade it all the sudden died and then every one after has died once brought inside for the winter.
Good morning 😊 I am new to your channel, thank you for such a great, easy to understand video! You may have mentioned this at some point and I apologize if that is the case. My green jade plant's leaves are dropping though I keep thm outside in d sun n it's not that cold weather in d daytime here.. But dunno where to keep the plant at night when it's becomes too cold...it's 17°C here in the daytime
I'm having trouble with mine ..I had it in a small plastic container and it was great and I purchased a terracotta planter ..I watered it every Sunday and NOW the leaves are dark and SHIVELED UP..😟..WHAT did I do ..helppp..it has one leaf left..lol
It might have been over watered. Depending on the climate you live in and etc watering every Sundays might be too much. Where I am in Canada it gets dry, so I will water based on the firmness of the leaves. If they get a bit soft then I'll water and that's usually about every 2 weeks or more. Sometimes that can be less in the summer.
hi, i had an accident yesterday with my jades... they got frost since were caught by sudden -2C windy weather at night and now they got bent to the ground and become watery and soft and lost color. What can be done with them?
Sorry to say but they sound like goners.... You could pull the plant out of the soil and if there is a firm stem then it might be able to sprout new growth. Feel free to send a picture to my Instagram
Hello Jeff. This was a very interesting video. I have some questions for you🙂 What will happen to the bottom roots since you didn't add soil to the bottom of the pot? Can you prune the woody stems of the jade plant? And the last question is can we find out what was that root material around the root ball called and how did that happen? Maybe we can ask a soil scientist like 'Gardening in Canada'?
Succulents for the most part have a shallow root system so it will most likely "fan" out the roots as it grows. Yes you can cut a woody stem. I did make a video on this, but expect that cut portion to grow slower than a green stem cut. Those a very fine roots that were around the root ball. They will grow back!
Lots of sun 🌞 Make sure you slowly transition it into brighter light so it doesn't burn the leaves. When I had one I had it on the ledge of my south window getting full sun. Mine also got some pink edges from sun stress!
Ones that have fallen off mine I just leave it like that as well. Once you get new growth you can always dig up that small cutting and transplant it into its own pot.
Jades like warm and dry conditions naturally. Now with that said I have jades in lower and higher humidity locations and they all do great! Do they need a humidifier.....no.

My jade leaves are also all pointed downwards. I'm a bit worried about her.
Great video
Thanks friend
LOVE your sweet dogs😍
Me too! Lol
نبات الجيد جميل يعطينا طاقة إيجابية وشعور بالراحة انه نبات رائع ❤
Thanks so much
Ever think of doing any bonsai with your jade plants? They are classic plants to turn into bonsai. I am taking a cutting this spring from mine and starting one. Great update! 😀
I don't have any more room for another Jade plant haha
absolutely fabulous ! ❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much Kimberly!
I currently have 2 phalaenopsis orchids, but there is one in torn on purchasing. the-little-big-plant-co.myshopify.com/collections/tropicals/products/papa-shin-yi-heart-x-hung-sheng-red-apple
wow amazing
Thanks!
Love the jade videos!
Hahaha! I was going to ask you what kind of puppy that was because she looks similar to my schitz zu. Then you answered my question. Such a cute little dog,!!
Thanks Suzanne!!!
We finally had temps above freezing where I could finally open the windows lol
Jades are usually good at remaining in small pots. If you are watering more then normal, starts to decline or any other signs of needing to be repot then I would just leave it alone.
The bush style are just multiple stems jammed in one pot. The single stem ones grow into a tree structure with age and pruning.
@@EverythingPlants 🙏
Feel free to send a picture of the plant to my instagram account if you want
@everything_plants_ca
I'm curious what the little paper sachets hanging on your plants are for?
Hey! Those sachets are beneficial mites. They supposedly eat pests like spidermites and thrips. To be honest, I didn't really notice a difference lol
@@EverythingPlants Interesting! Thanks for the info :)
Hi I got a very big jade plant but unfortunately some branches r getting rotten n really worried, what can I do
Thankyou, so interesting and helpful.
Hello Lynn. I bet with a repotting (pot with a drain hole lol) and a good pruning in the spring, your plant will explode with new growth!
@@EverythingPlants Thankyou, I am very hopeful.
Hello live in Canada and a report my plant the Jade but when I it’s so hard to take it out of my butt when I took it out at the roots it’s showing and I planted with the good soil cactus I watch you when you took it off from the part you left the way it is but mine it was maybe 25 years and never moved it so it’s gonna be okay it’s big huge three I took so many things from it I prune it So it’s gonna survive thank you says tell me the truth I love that plant thank you
Thanks Najila. Jades are my favorite and is what actually got me into plants. Thanks again for watching!
You just answered my question, thank you
👍
Great video. We also had to prune a very old plant like crazy in the spring time and we‘ve put them all in one big pot. Now they have all grown to the mineral mix (I haven’t put them into soil).
Now I have a mini forest. But thinking about it long-term. It’s not really possible for them to grow like this, right? What would you do? Separate them? However I couldn’t really plant 20+ plants in the flat hahaha
I have one large jade plant like this as well. The only thing I would do or recommend is perhaps space them out a bit so they can grow without getting tangled up
@@EverythingPlants good idea yes, thanks 🙏🏻
Or sit the pot of that jade plant down into a heavier, wider terracotta pot. Unless you've already repotted that is. I love, love, love jade. I am currently propagating a bunch of leaves right now.
I potted it in a wider pot a little while ago!
Just found you channel. Great content thank you. My Jade's have white specks on the leaves, we have well water with lots of minerals which I think is causing the problem. Would you change the soil and use bottled water? I have a ton of Jades! TIA
@@diydiva3190 I wouldn't change the soil. I use a Culligan faucet water filter that I got off Amazon. I rarely have an issue with mineral spots.
Sorry about your jade plant. Glad it wasn’t too bad. I have many succuients in my plant collection and I think they are the easiest plant ever. Almost indestructible. 😂
Good tips.
Thanks Jeff!
Thanks for sharing ❤️
It was a really weird combo of needing water, despite being dormant and not wanting water. lol
That is weird. Are you going to buy some new ones soon?
@@EverythingPlants Yeah, I already have! I took cuttings of the big one, so I’ve got a couple little jade pots here and there.
Jade is one of my favourite plant 🌿
Awesome! I love them too
I bought one pretty big, any tips for soil, what do you use?
Hello! I use a succulent specific soil (cactus/succulent). They need a well draining soil for sure. There are many different brands, but I use promix.
It's hard to give advice without seeing the plant. Feel free to send a picture to my IG account if you want
You say that the jade grows slower in the winter, what if I use grow lights, will the jade grow grow faster and not slow down even if I was to prune it? My jade is under a grow light.
Ya. As long as it's getting enough light, then it should grow!
I seem to get a lot of new growth and sprouts but not a lot of vigor.. what would you suggest?
Just give it time and if you haven't given it any fertilizer in awhile then maybe try that (half strength) next time it needs water
@@EverythingPlants Ok Thanks for replying back on both replies I don’t really use that liquid fertilizer I came up with something completely organic on my own but I’ll try that..
My jade caught some kind of disease(I guess)-all its leaves fell off in one day. Do you have any idea what could it be?
Are any portion of the stems mushy or rotten?
@@EverythingPlants after the leaves fell, the stem became gradually drier and drier, until it died.
Also ty so much for your reply!

When I give it water....I will soak it until water flows out the bottom of the drain hole

I got a jade plant for Christmas, but the pot does have a drainage hole, I only water a little. When can I change the pot. The pot is Ceramic
I would definitely place it in a pot with drain holes.
How do you get a jade to stem out for the first time or will it stem out on its own?
Sometimes it will do it naturally, but make sure it's getting enough light. Otherwise you can prune it to branch out
In the winter, would a grow light help?
Oh ya...any extra light for a jade is great 👍
@@EverythingPlants Thanks for replying. My Jade propagation has begun. Im so excited. Can't wait to be able to turn my beautiful Jade plants into Jade Bonsai.

Hi sir its that okey to use the ever green multi purpose compost for jade plants I saw your jade nice I have I dont know how to save my all plants from UK London thanks
I only use a succulent cactus soil mixture. If you don't have that then something very well draining.
My green jade plant's leaves are dropping though I keep thm outside in d sun n it's not that cold weather in d daytime here.. But dunno where to keep the plant at night when it's becomes too cold...it's 17°C here in the daytime
What temperatures do you have during the day and night?
It's 13°C
It's 17°C temp here
I'm having trouble with mine ..I had it in a small plastic container and it was great and I purchased a terracotta planter ..I watered it every Sunday and NOW the leaves are dark and SHIVELED UP..😟..WHAT did I do ..helppp..it has one leaf left..lol
@@EverythingPlants OK I will stop..I will wait 2 weeks I don't want to give up on the little twig that's left..lol..
@@EverythingPlants and Thank you for replying 🙏 😊
hi, i had an accident yesterday with my jades... they got frost since were caught by sudden -2C windy weather at night and now they got bent to the ground and become watery and soft and lost color.
Do you know anything about the variegated Jade plant and how to keep the variegation ❓
Lots of sun 🌞 Make sure you slowly transition it into brighter light so it doesn't burn the leaves. When I had one I had it on the ledge of my south window getting full sun. Mine also got some pink edges from sun stress!
My jade plant dropped one leaf near soil level and now from the same growing point comes out roots down to soil. should i leave them like that?
Ones that have fallen off mine I just leave it like that as well. Once you get new growth you can always dig up that small cutting and transplant it into its own pot.
Ops . Which is better pots . Plastic or that marble ?
For succulents , I prefer clay. As long as you have a drain hole in the bottom you should be okay with any pot.
Thank you.
I have a small ripple jade plant any care tips. Thanks
I have never had this variety before, but I would assume the care would be the same.....
Do Jade plants like the humidifier??
Jades like warm and dry conditions naturally. Now with that said I have jades in lower and higher humidity locations and they all do great! Do they need a humidifier.....no.
