I do like the aesthetic choices they made with the Master System version.

Me too. I really like Breakout in particular which looks more like Arkanoid.

The Máster System Version Is Surprisingly A Really Good Port Of The Arcade Game

I like the versions in this compilation. I've played a bit of it in emulation, and version of Missile Command is pretty nice. I prefer it over the port that's on the Genesis Arcade Classics cart. They spruced it up nicely, and it's fun, plus has firing from all 3 missile banks which is missing in many ports. It's the best of the 3 translations on here, IMO. Centipede is the port that lands closest to the arcade in look. It's a pretty fun port. Breakout looks and sounds nice, but it's trying to look like arkanoid more than Breakout. It plays okay-ish with a d-pad, but I much prefer ball and paddle games with an analog controller. I think I'd rather go with the arcade versions over these on this compilation, but I do like that they tried something new. I just think it would have been nice to have an option for the original graphics too like Arcade Classics on the Genesis.

I was thinking the same thing that I thought it would have been better if they had the original version and the "modern" editions for each game. I love Breakout and Arkanoid so I'll take anything I can get in that genre but I also prefer paddle controls. Much like Marble Madness it's very hard to get precise control with a D-Pad. Overall though these are all really solid but the lack of the original modes does hurt it a little.

I have to admit while the arcade ports are great, the NES and Master System did a great job with arkanoid and centipede oe millipede? Whichever lol ive always preferred the wider screens bigger sprites with those versions. Great video!

Thanks buddy! Yeah these are excellent ports of these games and I like the nice touch of giving a remastered feel to these classics.

@@RetroComparisons For sure totally agree. Sometimes you get lucky with ports like these for sure

Nice! When the originals came out this long ago, I always appreciate newer systems doing a little bit of "value add" to make their own versions of the titles more unique, and the Sega port of these games does exactly that. With these, I'd say Master System wins on "Breakout" and "Missile Command", full-stop. They look and sound better but otherwise feature what seems like identical gameplay. For "Centipede" it's a bit more complicated, because the visual upgrade is less and I have to wonder if the SMS version's controls and gameplay held up against the lightning-fast arcade game.

I always like that too when they give the older games a boost. I do kind of wish that they went the route the Genesis game did where they had the original and new modes as options but nonetheless it's still a great game with 3 classics. I think the SMS controls were a bit lacking compared to the arcade with Centipede but it's certainly not the worst port of it I've played. Missile Command was fantastic and had the perfect visual upgrade IMO. Breakout is kind of a weird one. It seems like they were going for Arkanoid more than Breakout but I love both of those games so it didn't really bother me. The controls in that were ok but nothing quite beats a paddle control for that style of game.

So SMS can beat the Arcades after all...))

Absolutely. And I've been noticing the NES beating the arcade too in some of the recent footage I've gotten.

Too bad that (at least at this point) there's nothing you could compare Contra Hard Corps with, 'cause this means that I'll most probably never see a video about one of the greatest and most beloved games for me on your channel...

@@oldfan4049 Omg it's such a great series!! I hadn't thought about that but it does suck that it's a Genesis exclusive because that game kicks so much ass. I don't know if this is controversial but I like that even better than Contra 3, though that game is also incredible.

@@oldfan4049 This is a tough one IMO. There's something so classic about these games in their original form that they're hard to beat but the visual upgrades in the SMS version are awesome. It's kind of like a great older Beatles song where technically a cover version may be better in every way but there's just something about that original that makes it special.

@@RetroComparisons well, I agree to disagree considering that those arcade originals are old like mamoth and looked old right at the time of release. I mean, literally less than 10 years and games suddenly evolved tremendously. So for me those updated ports are way better.
And no, same doesn't go for Genesis/SNES games 'cause 1) those hold for like almost 20 years 2) that type of graphics still looks good.

    • @RetroComparisons
      @RetroComparisons  6 днів тому +1

@@oldfan4049 I totally see your point on that. I think part of it for me is a sentimental thing because my first 7 years of playing games were on the 2600 so it's more of a case of rose tinted glasses. Back to your point, I'd say that even the NES for the most part got outdated pretty quickly whereas the Genesis/SNES hold up really well to this day. And then the same for the 5th gen where a lot of early 3D games aged poorly in a short amount of time whereas the 6th gen still holds up.

    ...so, it's the worst Arkanoid?
Good thing they butched up Centipede. When I'm soaking up 80's retro cool, the gay pastels keep tempting me to sin. It's why I boycotted MTV and Miami Vice and Jungle Hunt...but also the Gameboy Advance... I take this Spiritual Warfare seriously. So seriously that I actually played the game Spiritual Warfare, and now I backed myself into a corner because that game isn't nearly as bad as the Wisdom Tree label suggests.
Am I just being a contrarian? Missile Command is far more faithful to the original art direction, while improving on the level of detail in every way... But.
The original had a cold abstract minimalism that made it easier to relate to. It could be happening anywhere, while you watch the end of civilization from a distant hilltop. The new one is desperate to assure you that this is standard by the numbers sci fi...
I don't hate these newer versions. They're better looking than many graphics updates from the era...
But they lack the heart and soul they need to replace the originals.

Hahaha you're whole comment had me cracking up! I thought it was weird they were going for an Arkanoid look, I mean it hardly resembles Breakout at all aesthetically but I like it regardless. Missile Command look really good and may be the best of the 3 in this even if it's not my favorite. Ya know what, you're right. Spiritual Warfare is way better than it has any right to be. I recently played it for the Sega vs Nintendo video and was impressed with that and even some of the other Wisdom Tree games.
