All thanks to Debbie, she planted the seed of empathy into Nolan and the joy of enjoying the little things.
Debbie has to be the most underrated character in this entire show. she’s just as important as Mark to Nolan, even if he said otherwise.
@@morgboat744 Fr she's the realest hero. Showing that all the power in the world wont mean a thing if empathy isn't driving your ideals.
I mean she is voiced by Sandro Oh, so of course she would be amazing. Shows you that Christina really could have been a great mom if she had wanted to be.
And thanks to Nolan he planted his seed
@@morgboat744 Yeah, people seem to highlight the pet line like it's anything other than Nolan trying to convince himself that he saw her that way. If he really thought of her as a pet, he wouldn't have been nearly as upset when Debbie found out what he had done to the Guardians. A pet owner doesn't smash a wine bottle and put a hole in the wall when their "pet" finds out they're not a bad person and doesn't want to be around them anymore.
The entire point is that Nolan was desperately craving a normal life after the hell that was Viltrum. He didn't know what he'd been missing out on until he found it. Then, because he was literally born and raised to think of Viltrumite culture as normal, he literally could not deprogram himself.

They really got the point that Nolan thought he had no choice, he didn’t want to kill mark but felt that his homeworld was too strong which if this wasn’t a main character’s homeworld they would be. Nolan’s flashback shows that what made Nolan truly human was mark himself
Don't forget Debbie. She really did teach him what it meant to be human. He called her a pet, because he didn't want to admit that she was clearly much more to him.

Hatred of himself for what he’s done, and fear of what Viltrum will do because of what he’s about to do. Such an amazing, like, 10 seconds.
FR
It's the time he spent on earth, and humanity changed his character, mark changed his character. Nolan doesnt have anymore sons except mark in this scene, when he says hed still have his dad after 500 years nolan realizes every decision mark has made led up to the fact his son had him on his mind the entire time.
Humanity is shit.
Describing Omni-Man as a "Mindless Soldier" is pretty damn accurate. There are plenty of Soldiers IRL that would be disgusted with Nolan's actions. They'd say that man's no soldier. If anything, Mark is the real soldier here. And yeah, you're right. That gasp is him snapping back to his mental state of being a benevolent father and realizing the scope of what he had just done. Mindlessly.

What really completes that monologue though is when he softens and smiles watching Mark at 2:00 . Shows that Debbie really did get through to him a lot of the time, he wasn't always soulless, manipulating her into thinking he cared; he truly felt it.
Adds weight to when she first confronts Nolan about the massacre, and tells him she taught him to be human. A lesser story would say he never cared and played her the whole time.

No, he's saying he believes it's out of his hands, he does not have an alternative and neither does his son. It also kind of is; it's very reasonable for Omni Man to believe him and his son together don't stand a chance at fighting the entirety of the Viltrumite empire. It surprises me so many people dismiss Omni-Man so easily here, when real world parallels make the difficulty of the choice obvious. Would you risk yourself and your family dying to protect a less powerful species from society? Would you , hypothetically, stand up to a fascist government (seems similar enough to the Viltrumite Empire) to stop monkeys from being used in medical tests? I'm saying, Omni Man really faces a difficult choice here and just because we are human we too easily say "Of course he's wrong! Humans are valuable!". Well, we might want to consider treating animals more nicely too then. It's not like most people are laying down their lives (and the lives of their families!) to save pigs (pretty intelligent animals) from having terrible lives.
I couldn’t believe we got tears out of Omni man. That whole scene in the mountains was really elite level writing. Amazon got it with this one

But that moment when he remembers Mark's baseball game... Such an overlooked scene. Tear jerker for both Nolan and the audience.
I mean he was basically lying to himself. Especially in the very last speech where he say "Why did you make me do this?" Well, if he not doing his job properly. His people would kill him and destroy earth Civilization in the process.
Well I dont blame him, he knows firsthand how crazy and destructive Viltrumite is. If he hadn't 'prepare' Earth by killing off some big name heroes. The Empire would simply just send couple of Viltrumite to kill of the entire human race, worse than this action. Hence why his empathy died and had to betray.
Basically notice how he flew around a planet once and nearly killed off its entire civilization, but he only focused damage on each city block in this fight. Sadistic sure, but it shows how much damage he could've done but held back cause there wasn't a point to do it unless needed like educating Mark. So he's not entirely a sociopath.

Now, Invincible may not be actually invincible, but he was able to take a beating that the Guardians of the Globe could only dream of
Pretty sure his Dad was going easy on him
He was trying to teach his son how to be a Viltrumite... only for his son to teach him what it truly means to be human.
While you're technically right about the fact that the Guardians cannot tank this much damage from Nolan aside from Immortal and War Woman where they basically become disabled of they do, Nolan wasn't even trying to kill Mark.
If he wanted to do that, he'd just snap his neck.
@@wingedbluj1674 Underrated comment.
You do realise that Mark is Nolan's son i.e half Vultrimite, don't you? Hence it is understandable that he should be at least twice more durable than the guardians
Mark ,despite getting his soul beat out of him, was the only one on earth who could stand against his father. Mark knew it was up to him and that drove him to keep fighting even if he had no chance. Invincible is probably my favorite super hero after watching this show.
the irony is that, in about a couple of years, Mark is exponentially stronger than Nolan.

3:55 Is the moment Nolan came to realize just what the hell he was doing. He’s not a soldier dealing with an enemy, he’s a father beating his own son who’s trying to do the right thing. Upon coming to realize what he’s done, he leaves for he’s unable to comprehend the emotions as well as unable to continue what he’s been doing. Basically, Nolan’s *Humanity* had surfaced.
Spoiler alert: Nolan doesn’t side with Thragg’s goal of universal conquest. He’s just following orders. Leaving the planet is considered treason, so Nolan eventually gets pulled into the alliance against the Viltrums
Yeah it's a pretty great scene. I'm still pissed Atom Eve hasn't realized she can just turn omni man into a tree house at the atomic level but omni man's feelings being the only thing that beat him is a good second option.

Right. I also doubt Nolan has ever dealt with a planet like Earth. The human race's moral compass is so vastly different from his, that it had an affect on even him.

What I find ironic is that everything Nolan said about humanity is also true of Viltrumites. Their fates are the same, it's just that Viltrum's takes longer. Viltrumites aren't better than humans, they're only more.
Nolan might have gotten some perspective if he'd talked this over with the Immortal.
He never said they were important, only that they were MORE important then humans at least. It’s like how -1 is more positive than -100, it doesn’t mean that -1 is positive to begin with but it certainly is more positive than -100
I mean they are stronger, smarter, faster, etc than humans. By definition that is better.

“You, dad. I’ll still have you.”
Those words are all it took for Nolan to break. Even after everything he did to Mark, after every person he killed in front of his son, and even after calling Mark’s mom and planet insignificant, Mark still loves his father. Viltrumites may be invincible but Nolan realized that humans have invincible spirits
It was after that flashback that Nolan fully realized that his feelings of love for Debbie and Mark were actually real. Throughout the course of the entire season, he was confused as to why he kept feeling that way. As a Viltrumite, he shouldn’t care how lesser beings feel about him… but ultimately he did.
In reality, Nolan is actually a very good person that was corrupted by propaganda when he was young.
“You Dad, I’ll still have You.”
This hits heavy for me.😔
The fact he’s crying when he says it’s gets me.
I love it when Superman-type characters are defeated by a simple phrase. Because that is so much more satisfying than beating them in a fight.
Like in "Superman: Red Son" where Lex Luthor defeats Superman by writing "Why don't you just put the whole WORLD in a BOTTLE, Superman?" in a letter.
I've been crying like a baby each time I watch this scene. Nolan knows he must kill Mark if he can't turn him. If not it will be much harsher death for Mark later. He lets his Vultrumite persona take over cause he can't kill Mark while "sane".
Nolan's a being with thousands of years spent contemplating and reinforcing the Vultrum way and to see all that foundation shake is unimaginable for us. If he would accept that killing Mark is wrong, than he would have to accept responsibility of wrongfully killing millions of beings. Plus don't forget he must've played out every scenerio in the decades of planing this Earth takeover - yet Mark sacrifices himself to change God.
Awfully well written character
Idc what yaw say Nolan NEVER wanted to do that. He knew mark was gonna fight.. he regretted EVERYTHING he did with that final question. Nolan is hard to understand but one thing I got for sure was that he really loves mark and that kid changed him.. made him more human than he realized.
Don't forget about Debbie she was the one that tought him how to be human
It's a very powerful and emotional scene. In the end he just couldn't bring himself to kill his son.Like you said,he really loves Mark.Between the Invincible series and The Boys,I don't know what it says about what Warner Brothers and DC are doing with Superman when you have Superman analogues like Omni-Man and Homelander being in shows that are actually better than some of the stuff that Superman has been in!

3:16 It honestly sounds like Nolan is trying to convince himself more than Mark that what he’s doing is justified. Such a defining moment for these two. INCREDIBLE!
Imagine having something so beautiful and precious with another person, and then throwing it all away. Breaking it. Tearing it apart with your own hands, tearing THEM apart with your own hands. Imagine being so hollow and cruel and stupid and utterly inhumane. Look at Mark’s face in his happiest moment, and then look at what his own dad did to him.
Christ.
Pretty much sums up what divorce and abuse does to a child.
But what's even more heartbreaking is after all that... Mark says those 4 words: "I'd still have you."
He is over 2000 years old, the time he spent with his family is meaningless compared to the 2000 years he spent forging his loyalty and commitment to the people of Viltrum. It's like expecting someone to choose a one-night stand over their family of 40 years.
@@Nathan-oe8ut That analogy is flawed. Yes, Nolan says "the time I have spent here is a speck," but that speck of time as a father is more meaningful than all the time he spent as a soldier of Viltrum. If it wasn't he'd have done his job and conquered Earth. So it's not expecting someone to choose a one-night stand over a 40-year family, it's more like expecting someone to choose a one-day-old baby over a 40-year career.
2:01 that's nor a superhero neither a viltrumite soldier
That's just a father, proud of his son
This is one of the most powerful scenes i think I've seen in western animation for a long while. The pain and conflict of emotions... Just everything is amazing
That moment at 1:55 when Nolan's heart is softened, always get me.
yeah, absolutely agree. goosebump moment.
This truly is an amazing moment in the series and superhero history, the dynamic between Mark and Nolan is incredible. Nolan a true killing machine and a loyal soldier to his home planet is wracked with grief over what he's done to everyone but mostly to his son. How he justifies it is he's immortal and everyone would die anyway and he has a point imagine a human caring about an ant the idea would seem ridiculous. Even after all that the moment with his son enables him to see it from Marks's viewpoint sure humans are week and timid but their also creative and intelligent they can be selfish and cruel but kind and empathetic. The changing point is when he looks at his bloody hands after Mark's last line of love for his father and after all this Mark still loves his dad and perhaps still looks up to him not as much as before though. With Mark's determination to forfeit his life to fighting a losing battle with his dad Nolan sees the sacrifice Mark is willing to give. Nolan also knows he can't go back after seeing his bloody hands and his half-dead son he knows he failed as a father and failed his own ideology. Nolan then decides to leave the only thing he can think of doing. This scene is truly incredible.
But humans are more than just ants. We have something most creatures don’t. We have humanity. We have the ability to selflessly help others, even if it means we are hurt in the process.
@@Bubba1025 😂 selfelessely love this is biggest bs I have heard ,when human are walking they killed many small animals like ants and other but did human feels remorse the answer is no ,humans are the biggest hyppocritical animals living on earth and biggest dangerous being from an earth perspective ,so these morality is a bullshit point that human uses in their mind to make themselves feel what they are doing us right but from another perspective they might be biggest villain
Yeah I agree. I’m a total Marvel/DC fanboy but Invincible is just so fucking well done (not only as a graphic novel but as a show).
I can’t imagine being a fan of the superhero genre and not enjoying this IP.
Something to add to this as well. With the discussion between him and his wife, when she appeals to him by showing that whatever feeling Mark is displaying, it can equally make them both feel the same way. Nolan held back as well when remembering that. He saw his own son shed a tear, and as he flew away back into space, he sheds his own set of tears. It shows that deep down that Nolan loves him, even if he can just make another kid. He knows he can't replace Mark no matter what he does.
Hey! I do care about ants! I'm lucky to be born as a specimen of the planet's most intelligent race, it's my responsibility to protect those lesser than me.
The face expressions on Nolan were amazing. The whole team did great
Kudos to the animators, they really captures Nolans pain as he flies away.
So we can all agree that this is better than “Homelander” right?

Homelander is just flat-out insane. He only cares about himself and how he looks in front of others

"You Dad...I'll still have you"
You can see Nolan break at this moment. Up until then he was trying to convince himself he was doing what his mission was meant to do but he starts to question himself. Nolan hears the words and becomes disturbed. It's the words no father wants to hear. His son screaming out in pain and asking for mercy. It triggers every fatherly instinct that Nolan must protect his offspring but yet he is the one harming him and that deeply disturbs him.
