The Supremes: Live on Rodgers & Hart Today (1966) | Lover / With A Song In My Heart / My Romance

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- This video has Motown group The Supremes on the prime time ABC TV special "Rodgers & Hart Today" aired as a tribute to the songwriting duo Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1966.
This performance inspired the creation and release of the album "The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart" that was released on May 22nd 1967. It was originally meant as a double album but was cut in half before release. All of the finished recordings slated for release on the double album were included on the 2002 Motown/Universal release "The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart: The Complete Recordings" that would also feature a live performance of the group singing "The Lady is a Tramp/Let's Get Away from It All" recorded at the Copacabana in May 1967.

This performance features:
Diana Ross
Mary Wilson
Florence Ballard
Hope you enjoy!
This vid was uploaded on a site and Marvin (individuell83) kindly sent me a link to it and I decided to post it.
It's amazing when you can really hear Mary and Florence how much "muscle" there is to the group vocally. It keeps Diana on her toes and they sounds rich and full.
True
Can you imagine? Three young women, on pitch, singing live with beauty and grace. Night after night and on so many recordings. What dedication. In the 60's when someone said the Supremes would be on Ed Sullivan we watched WITH OUR PARENTS! How times have changed.....
Great, great video. Damn will I ever get over the Supremes? I remember seeing this when it aired as a kid. All three are so beautiful.
Flo was DA BOMB!
I love Flo too.
It's in performances like this that you can hear how much her rich voice added to the great, sound of the group.
Thanks for commenting.

Best always as a trio so "My Romance" gets my vote!
+Carlos Leon Mine too! I liked the song on record/CD, but it's so cute how they all lean into the mic when they sing "no month... of May".
Doing this show is actually what inspired Motown to record the Rodgers and Hart album. This show was taped in the Summer of '66; the album was recorded February of '67. Flo looks great!!
This was when you could hear all three, and they were at their very best.
I can hear one
Herald Orome lies lmao flo is the loudest one on the chorus
The Rodgers and Hart album is my absolute FAVORITE!! It definately showcased Diana as Ms. Ross but Mary and Flo had major roles, listen to Flo reaching those extremely high notes! Diana is terribly thin, like wow she might've needed to be tube fed.. But her voice sounds fantastic! Mary and Flo's harmony is so beautiful and top notch and that's why I love this whole album because they were supreme together!
Children, calm down. It's just great music and part of our cultural history! Suave!
This is great! The three parts equals the magic! Actually Turner's book was one of the most enjoyable-i.e. funny -book's about Motown. Of course he embellishes who could remember exact conversations from 25 years before??? His tales of Florence holding court, driving to the airport, and singing People at the top of her lungs in her dressing room are just smashing!! That would be the best movie!!
Ross The Boss in full command!! Great job ladies!! 💅💅💅
Many say Diana was the only star of the group and fail to recognise that Mary and Flo were both, individually much more charasmatic than most other females out at that time.
Thanks for your lovely comment =)
THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS. MANY PEOPLE FORGET THAT FLO DID HAVE TALENT. THEY ALL DID PERIOD, When the talent is not fueled to the flame, it burns out. Diana is a perfect example. If we all compared her Meet the Supremes vocals to the WDOLG to R&H there is growth there because of Berry, but unfortunately, Berry wasn't interested in developing Mary and Flo as well. He didn't have to scarafice M/F for Diana. They could have all been winners.
THE SUPREMES (Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson & Diane Ross) as they are inducted into music history at THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM, the three ORIGINAL FOUNDING MEMBERS of the still # 1 FEMALE GROUP of all times THE SUPREMES,
Not to be confused with the "dog & pony show" Berry Gordy & Diane Ross created (Diane Ross & The Supremes) once they remove Florence Ballard (1966/67) to pave the way of Diane's (1969) solo career, The Diane Ross traveling show :-)
Me, too! Love Marvin and Aretha and Stevie! They were all extremely talented and multi-talented. I don't mind that some artist don't write their own music. As for groups like the Supremes who don't, I just love listening to them and admiring the way they interpret other peoples songs. They're very talented singers, and the three original Supremes (in this video) had a distinct sound that changed after Flo left. Most of us attributed that to Cindy joining the group.
If you're ever in New York, you can go to the Museum of Television and Broadcasting and watch this whole special--for free. It's amazing.
I love the Rodgers and Hart album!! Spring Is Here is my favorite but from this video I love My Romance. Love the close up of Diana! They did polish up her stage presence from the earlier days and it paid off, glad Berry decided to show the world that the black girls from Detroit could sing anything!!!
Oh yes Mary is amazing - her vocal performance on ONE NIGHT WITH YOU is breathtaking =D
It wasn't until many years later that most of us found out that the real reason the background vocals sounded different was because other singers were used other than Cindy and Mary, except maybe on Someday We'll Be Together, which was obvious Mary and Cindy didn't sing on. As for me, I became angry when I found out that Supremes records (except those with the Tempts) were really just Diana Ross records being sold under the Supremes name.
LOL they certainly have.
Being 14 I didn't get to see these performances of The Supremes in the 60s when they first aired (neither did my mum haha) but it's so lovely to see them now and be able to see how much times really have changed.
Thanks for commenting.
Have a wonderfully s u p r e m e christmas.
That is, those recording made after Flo left, starting particularly with "Somethings You Never Get Used To".
Oh yes the "Diana Ross & The Supremes: Love Songs" compilation. That's a nice new one.
I hope to post the studio version of LOVER soon,.
I have it from The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart album BUT I listened to a clip of the one on the Love Songs album on iTunes and the mix was slightly different with Flo and Mary louder, so I will try and get that mix on mp3 and post that instead =P
Thanks for commenting.
The Supremes were always better live =D
- JG [JonathanLGardner]
Could they get flo any further from the mic by 3:25?
I LOVE it too AND the album.
The album has the same backing but it's just not as loud but I LOVE the album because it had the GROUP sound - you could actually hear WHO was singing backing (flo and mary) and who is singing what part.
I LOVE the producers for that album because they experimented with the backing - sometimes they have mary do the high part instead of Flo, like on the song THIS CAN'T BE LOVE or I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TIME IT WAS.
It's definately one of my fav Supremes albums.
you finally said something i can agree with
Very beautiful clip. Thank you for posting and helping to keep these memories alive. Let's be happy that personal differences were put away for these performances and that talent and grace prevailed!
@MrKwEsI91 Yes, Diana's sweet, jazzy vocal kept the polish of the song while Flo and Mary really injected some Motown/Detroit soul into it! I must post the studio recording of this because at the end Flo and Mary belt out WHAT A LOVER OH YES HE IS! =D

I just see how Flo or any SUPERSTAR or even ADULT would confide in someone so young.
GET IT FLO AND MARY!
LOVE hearing the girls all singing together on these songs.
Thank you for posting.
I haven't read it yet but that's what I got from the reviews I read of the book on Amazon
What? You can hear Mary & Flo?!
They are at their best here.
I agree totally - a bit of shame though that I missed it all =( lol.
Thanks leaving such a lovely comment.
- JLG (JonathanLGardner)
Graceful LADIES!
DIANA ROSS IS VERY BEAUTIFUL!
Yes, this anorexic, psychotic and narcistic girl is "very beautiful", my ass...
slowik galettissime lmaooo
Good point.
She might have hated it, but they excelled at performing this type of music and I enjoyed every minute of it when they did. I still enjoy it today.
They most certainly do.
Thanks for commenting =)
Sing Flo!!! ❤
=D No other lineup could come close to the sound the originals had together! (However I must say Jean, Mary and Cindy really do slay Bridge Over Troubled Water with their impeccable harmonies).
Have a nice day.
- JLG | JonathanLGardner
I saw Mary's brilliant collection and I couldn't believe how small the dresses were!!! =O xD To think I am taller than The Supremes is mind-boggling. They really do look bigger on screen LOL
The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart is one of my favourite Supremes albums because of that. The album has a real good "group" sound and you can hear who is singing what on each song plus they sound AMAZING =D
Thanks for commenting.

Great Album
does anyone have the supremes official fan button?
Gladys Knight once said that the Supremes weren't a "girl group" they were a "ladies group". They way they carried themselves was a cut above their contemporaries. They were just different.
Yes, and Gil Askey even "borrowed" some of the musical arrangements from this show for the Supremes' album. For instance, the Mamas & the Papas rendition of My Heart Stood Still.
You know I really should - and Mary's and Peter's. I can't believe such an avid Flo and Supremes fan like me still does not own a single book about them LOL xD
Most definately - and the group's class, sophistication, beauty (and of course their voices) makes it easy to see why they have become the best female G R O U P of all time =)

OMG thanks. That's exactly what I had read before but I got confused when another site said differently. So all 4 parts of their appearance were 1966 right?
LOV FLO @ 4:47/50 .... almost laughing when she lost her note ....so cute.
RIP SUPREME FLO!
Any of my comments talking about Flo's gifts/talents were only to support my view that Flo had what it took to be a successful solo artist at the time =S
.....seems diana.... always got her way....!
If people would turn their filters on before they started typing the bickering wouldn't get so bad. I, for one, have a mouth like a truck driver, but I'm not gonna curse out a Diana Ross fan because I love Florence Ballard. Think before u type....Oh yea, and big ups to TORRESONGS2 for the post below.........
@pnyc1969 Yes, The Supremes were in general. They went from Doo-Wop, Soul and R&B to Pop and Showtunes =) Thanks for commenting.

I couldn't agree more! =D
Thanks for commenting.
- JLG (JonathanLGardner)
LOL yes because they also wore these same dresses when they appeared at The Hollywood Palace.
Extremely popular British girl group Girls Aloud wear strikingly similar gowns to the ones featured in this vid in the music video for their song THE PROMISE, check it out I LOVE it =D
From 3:45-3:49, Diana and Flo share a secret laugh! It was enlightening to see!
never
A nice change from what we are accustomed to hearing about them
I guess it's because Diana touched Flo's boobies with her elbow twice in a row 😂
She sure is!
And it's what would be her birthday tomo!
Thanks for commenting.
- JLG | JonathanLGardner
true!!!!!!!!!!
It really is.
That was really lost when Flo left - and was very noticeable on live recordings.
Most definately.
Thanks for commenting.

LOL I must get those books! I have read the reviews on Tony's....it seems like A LOT of drama but people aren't sure of how much truth there is to his book. I have read some extracts and I love the one about Flo belting out PEOPLE acapella in her changing room as a sort of peaceful rebellion against Diana and Berry LOL
You have your opinion......I have mine. Talent comes in various forms. I see by your avatar that you must be a Beatles fan. Great group. And, very talented! But, the Supremes had showmanship and grand voices. It's all the talent they needed. They could and did sing anything and have it come out right. They weren't stuck with just rock'n'roll. Can't be said about alot of other groups.
Hear! Hear!
Sadly there isn't =(
Thanks for commenting though - I love em too.
- JLG | JonathanLGardner
Diana looked VERY skinny in this performance...Flo and Mary sings amazingly good
@vivahb1970 Oh yes, great album. The producers really used all 3 voices on that one, changing up the arrangements (having Flo sing low and Mary high on a few) =D
LOL I was thinking that!
When Flo left, they lost a balance of harmony that they never recovered from with Cindy or anyone else.
They certainly were.
Thanks for commenting.
Have a wonderfully s u p r e m e day - oh and be sure to check out the other videos =)
Supremes Fans: Please stop wasting time bickering and use those fingers to write to whomever owns the rights to these specials and get them released on DVD!
great performance! Is there a dvd with this & others on it? I just purchased reflections @ walmart & I'm in love with the (original) supremes:)
Exactly, couldn't agree more.
Thanks so much for commenting.
Please check out my other channel THEJLG
@MeetTheSupremes you are right about that. I don't deny that DC was talented. Probably the more talented of the female groups of modern times than any other. I loved Beyonce in "Dreamgirls". She also did a great job in Cadiallac Records playing Etta James. Nope. There is no denying the talent all the girls of DC have. And, I guess we can say thank you to Beyonce's parents for keeping them out of the tabloids!
The Supremes continued to make good music after Diana Ross left, with Jean Terrell and later on with Scherrie Payne, also allowing Mary Wilson to do some solos herself and very well done. We all love Diana Ross I know I do, but I won't let that blind me and comprehend that the other girls had talent and they showed it with all the albums they released after 1970. Motown simply was not interested in them and they is why they were killed as you put it.
Noah , the secret laugh is because being cramped in on that small platform , Diana bumps Flo twice in the breast while she's flinging her left arm out. They laugh about it. Took me a while a few years ago to figure that out.
Yes because Flo had her twins at the same hospital
Well diana sure aint thin no more. but she will be 70 in two yrs so i guess not. she may have been thin but her Voice was a Million seller. and was on 18 No.1 pop..not bad for a bag of bones as some folks called her. It aint about how Pretty or Stacked one is. That means Nothing ON radio. its the voice that counts and folks remember. not how stacked some one was.
WOW! Flo is on fire! I just can't take my eyes off of her.
Flo had a sexy strut! Diana and Mary had a cute way of walking but Flo was like Mae West! and she alway's every time i've seen them perform in these gown's, Flo really packed into her's nice!!
Thanks for commenting. I agree, one thing I LOVE is whatever was going on backstage - and there sure was alot - they always put on a great show.
Thanks again.
Have a wonderfully s u p r e m e day.
Oh yes and didn't Flo go to see her =)
to bad they didnt include these performances on that cd.they had great harmomy.
love this.this is a great album.but the live versions have more backing vocals which i think is better.they had great harmony
I love clips like these when Flo is happy and looking so sweet! My girl could pose, sway and preen with the best of them! And that body was just IT! Mary just couldn't help being sexy and cute. She still pops her fingers the same way today when she is jamming. What poise! Just floats on stage. Diana is just "Little Miss Show Business." Growing up, there was nothing like The Supremes- still ain't.
I agree. What seemed like awkwardness in the beginning was the uniqueness that helped Diana to become the legend she is today.
I love a l l of them and right now I am having EARGASMS to Diana's a m a z i n g, truly a m a z i n g version of AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH.
Thanks ever so much for commenting and have a wonderfully s u p r e m e day.

@proverbs1824 ...prove that they clearly have great talent that stands head-and-shoulders above most of the music out there at the moment. I love The Supremes and I love Destiny's Child and I don't feel they need to be compared because they are both very different but managed to make a great and lasting impact in their times.
Diana had been lead before the relationship.
Berry saw in her a star and pushed her and pushed her - but in doing so he forgot the other great stars he had.
The relationship probably explains why she got special treatment offstage and had Berry wrapped around her finger.
Omg if only I did!
You know where I want to spend a day (or even a week or month!)
THE MOTOWN VAULTS! omg I want to get Flo's solo recordings (all the takes and mixes) because apparently that's where there are...
Wow our youtube names are similar LOL.
I don't think I realised there was someone with that name - I got this one from their first album -- plus I thought it was appropriate as I want people to be able to get to know each Supreme through my channel.
I actually find that Flo doesn't sing that high on the Rodgers & Hart - especially not compared to sings like YOUR KISS OF FIRE from Where Did Our Love Go or PEOPLE from There's A Place For Us (that I will be reposting very soon).
Also I LOVE how the producers expiremented with the backing having Flo sing the low part on THIS CAN'T BE LOVE and also on I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TIME IT WAS - which has Mary singing top (probably in falsetto) and Flo singing bottom - it's very effective.
Well I think it would be foolish to change the arrangements used here as they work so well. =P - that kind of made me believe the performance was from 1967 when I previously thought it was from 66 because the arrangements were so similar lol
Quite a shame...but then again, Flo had what it took to be a very successful solo artist - the presence, the charisma, the voice, the looks.
I just wish she had signed with Motown - even if they shelved her stuff at least ALL of it would have really shown off Flo's voice
Right diana did say she missed flo cause they didn't do their three part harmony anymore
Oh yes!
All groups in those days had to do that - they basically recorded studio songs live. The only difference was they got to do it again if it went wrong LOL.
Destiny's Child is a modern group with all members that can SAAAAANG live =) - a shame they are one of the few though who have all members with GREAT voices
Im sorry he was a child and Im sure Flo did not tell him everything. No one can tell FLo, Diana's, or Mary's story better than they can. No one can tell their feelings btter thant they can... Im sorry I believe Diana and Mary as the most crediable sources
legedaryone So true.
Yes all three certainly are. Thanks for commenting.
Have a wonderfully s u p r e m e day.
Diana just had to stick her head up high and keep it there, otherwise she wouldn't have survived. I can understand to a degree how hard it must have been - fame or loyalty
Yes I agree I LOVE the album because you get those grand and plush arrangements with that group sound =D
I LOVE it =P
The Supremes Sing Country, Western & Pop is an OK album but a bit of a sleeper for me.
I think the studio songs on the 2nd disc of the 40th anniversary release of the WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO album (which are also known as The Supremes Sing Ballads & Blues) should have been released as the songs on that disc are GREAT.
Lol it didn't matter too much because I think the audio was pre-recorded live and then they just lip-synced for the show.
OMG florence made lover her harmonies are great they lost that with Cindy u hardly ever heard her
DJ She was hired by Gordy for that exact reason
