  • A breakdown of data on the 2D and 2.5D Mario platformers. Are they hard? Are they not hard... only unnecessary amounts of recording people dying in the games will tell.

I agree with your take on Mario Wonder. The sheer fun and creativity this game constantly shows make up for the lesser difficulty. Mario has always been a fun first franchise. Difficulty can be fun, but Wonders approach is just as valid in my opinion. If you're looking for a though platforming series you should try the amazing DKC series.

Yeah for sure, Difficulty doesn't mean fun, overcoming a meaningful challenge means a sense of accomplishment. But Wonders stroke of genius is the flowers changing the stages each time. Would love more of that in the future.
I was interested in doing on on DKC and Returns, but in the future maybe. Next I think I will do Zelda and their tutorials!

I think it’s awesome you took the time to figure this all out, I’m excited to find out about the Zelda swords!

It’s either passion or Mental illness and I think I’ll leave that up to interpretation. No problem, have more time for videos now :)

I find Wii easier than DS, maybe it’s my experience but between the twirl and propellor suit I just find it controls a lot better.

I do think any small additions to player movement always add a lot. Makes it far more "Your fault" rather than the "games fault". Castlevania's "Commited Jump" takes control away from the player so deaths feel more out of your hands. It is a lovely trick, make the game still as difficult but not perceived as such. Maybe why I love Odyssey so much because of the movement.

Fascinating video bruv, particularly nice to hear the stuff about the super mario land games. I always thought mario land 2 was fairly easy, apart from the last level which is one of the hardest in the series x

Yeah for sure, I thought it was on to being the easiest game with very few deaths until the last level completely killed people. Crazy stuff

@@OrangeJuiceJaz I read a retrospective where a Nintendo dev stated that since you can go in any order, every level could be your first. Since everyone expects the first Mario level to be easy, it made balancing the difficulty, well, difficult.

I have to say 3D world and 3D land are anything but 2D, I mean it’s in the name, and like one level total in each is 2D, super paper Mario belongs here more, having la top ten most iconic Mario feature like power ups doesn’t make a fully 3D game only half 3D

I wonder if party of the reason audience perception of difficulty and the blind playthrough charts don't match up is because of the potential risk of "beginner's traps", or obstacles that might catch you off guard or psych you out on a first playthrough but are not difficult to execute once you learn the gimmick.
For example, with Mario World I think most of the jumps and enemies are rather easy to deal with - especially if you start cape spamming or use a blue yoshi - but there is a lot of variety in the game (puzzles, tech, enemy movement, etc) that are not always obvious to new players. Whereas the original Super Mario Bros is rather straightforward most of the time I think - give or take a repeating castle or three - but a fireflower will only get you so far if you start mistiming jumps. So you may get a situation where Mario World scores higher in difficulty, but it's still easier for new players to ultimately learn and clear. They just had to try and die more to learn it.

With how short 3d Land it isn't a shock that they'd buff the difficulty.

I mentioned towards the start that I didn't use "Lost Levels, Super Luigi U and Bowsers Fury" since these were either not available worldwide until recently or were DLC specifically for difficulty. I focused on the Mainline entries as obviously specially made content focused on difficult stages would be difficult
