  • You have been asking me what flies I use to catch coho salmon with. Here is a video of me tying my favourite coho salmon fly pattern - based off a Rolled Muddler Minnow simplified for coho and quick tying. This is not a fly tying tutorial, I'm just sharing how I like to tie mine.

We have a similar fly for our steelhead in Ohio. But I like the body much better in your fly. It adds a little more temptation to it. Thank you for sharing this video with us. Im setting up my vise tonight!

We used to tie them more like traditional muddlers with clipped deer hair heads but got lazier and lazier as the extra effort didn't seem to matter to the fish - they even seemed to prefer the bead head backed by the coloured thread. Thinking it had evolved into a new fly I had toyed with inventing a new name inspired by that scene in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen where the Scottish chap names a fly after his crush, ie the Chetwode - Talbot Beauty. But The Lovely Rita didn't mean anything to anyone else so I went back to calling them rolled muddlers.

Should the weight of the flies match the weight of the rod and reel? My flies are heavier and can't seem to cast them far with my light weight rod line set up.

Yes, it can be hard casting out a very heavy fly. So matching it with your rod is a good idea. As long as the fly gets to where the fish are!

Sometime hard to believe how well these sparse flies work for coho. Got constant bites last time I went out on the most beat up looking, sparse muddler imaginable. The "nicer" flies with more materials were barely getting any bites.
