    I played Digital Derby Auto Raceway at a friend's house, and I played Blip at a store. I never came across a Tricky Traps machine. I also recall playing arcade games back in the 70s similar to Digital Derby Auto Raceway that had a car that you would steer around other cars going around on a belt. The thing that comes to mind is that little kids wouldn't know the difference between the games with cars drawn on a belt and games with computer graphic displays.

    I've been looking for several years on what that tricky traps game was after seeing it on UA-cam as a little kid, thanks to you I finally know what it is now :)

    Oh wow! I had Blip and Digital Derby when I was a kid and had completely forgotten about them until now! Thank you very much for this nice reminder of some of the games I loved playing as a child. I may have to hunt down a another Blip game on eBay at some point. =)

    Blast from the past! I used to own that racing game, so I can confirm the brake is supposed to work on the left lane only. Obviously it broke years ago. The steering mechanism jammed and I broke something inside forcing it to turn. Afterwards I tried to rebuild a similar game in Lego,but with the state of Lego Technic in the eighties that wasn't really feasible.

      custardo Buliding that in Lego is a great idea. That could be a nice project also for "Fischertechnik" in case you know that, I had that as a kid ;-)

      VectrexRoli My nephew was big into Fisher Technik, so I know it well! In my mind, the biggest difference that Fisher technik everything was grey and red, but at least it didn't fall apart as easily. Lego Technic is much improved now though. I built the Unimog a few years ago, which was a great experience. It's looks great AND it's sturdy.

    I so miss my Digital Derby. Sadly it broke to where if you hit another car, the crash effect wouldn't happen. Then again I could say it got the first ever God mode.

    Servus Vectrex Roli und The Mysic Mrs. Vectrex.
Unglaublich. Bewundernde Grüsse aus der Schweiz

      ***** I remember seeing "Blip" in toy catalogues back in the days and I always thought it is a computer game. And now after all the years it turned out it is just mechanical. :-)

    In 1985 some one had given me a "tricky traps" machine, same yellow, same track, same traps, and made by tomy but mine was called "trips over traps"...this machine was already well worn with a cracked window, when came into my possession so I'm wanting to date mine circa 1980....played it for a few times and promptly got board . I pro ceded to disassemble the game and is how where acquired my first DC motor and subsequently first parts pile...I got more enjoyment with the "reverse engineering" than playing with the toy....80% of my toy end up this way.

    Awesome video as always Roli! Very intriguing that Formel 1 can run on a couple of AA's whereas Digital Derby needs C batteries. And now I'm very tempted to pick up Tricky Traps. :)
    Also, thank you very much for the shoutout, that's super nice of you!

    Nice vid. I still have my boxed Aaaagh! from 1988 so they must've been made before that. I also had a Tomy Racing Turbo but I've no idea where that is now.

  • @TheHighlander71

    Hahaha. Good kick in the face of Apple. Replace a battery...awesome. This reminds me of the day I made my own racing game with toilet rolls, paper, tin foil, a battery and a bell. We worked on it for a day and it was actually playable. I never understood why my friend at the time destroyed it at the end of the day...

    • @VectrexRoli
      @VectrexRoli  9 років тому

      The Highlander Maybe your friend was called "TOMY" and he was the guy that stole all your ideas and got rich by selling all those Tomy handheld games later?.. ;-)

      No, but I can tell you his name was Dyonis. I would bust a gut if you had an electronic toy with that name. Maybe Mrs. VectrexRoli?

    Great to see these again, thanks! I remember being envious of other kids who had them - practically computer games! Shortly before that we had Pocketeers, which were similar low-cost mechanical contraptions which usually emulated a similar sort of game play that you might expect to see in amusement arcades at the time. I had a bunch of Pocketeers. Someone's uploaded a clip of a few of them ua-cam.com/video/S1A5I9dsIS8/v-deo.html

    Cooles Video, was anderes bin ich von dir ja nicht gewohnt. Das "Tricky Traps" wollte ich schon als Kind immer haben, da es rein optisch sehr ansprechend war/ist. Es fehlt mir auf jeden Fall noch in meiner Sammlung, zusammen mit wahrscheinlich hundert anderen Sachen. ;)

    Some wonderful pieces of history there Roli!
    This made me think of a video I saw a few years ago where somebody had made an electromechanical version of the game Lunar Lander. If you do a UA-cam search on "Lunar Lander - video game made real" I think you'll find it interesting! (it's not quite the same thing because they used a lot of electronics in it)

    • @VectrexRoli

      ForViewingOnly Have you seen the Bally Space Flight arcade game from 1969? I like that a lot.

    • @ForViewingOnly
      @ForViewingOnly 9 років тому +1

      VectrexRoli No, I'd never seen that... Wow, it even had an 8-track tape deck in there for the recorded speech and sounds! Very cool for 1969.

    I have the racing game its called action racer in the u.k , mine has a star shaped red light when I crash which is about a inch in size. possibly your explosion light is faulty as in the same way my cars are not as white. made by the same company alps toys the label you have is possibly the retailer not the manufacturer but I am not sure myself. Thanks for adding this video this formula one game is impossible to find. BUT mine is for sale if anyone wants me to list it on ebay for them. ? mine is superb condition for the age and works perfectly.

    great video - never heard of any of the 3, neither in the 70s nor later. So seems you are turning into some sort of educational channel (or archaeological .... not sure). Keep up the good work.
