Accompanied by Uchujin U (Alien U), the character of the Space Onsen Prefecture Oita campaign, our host visited Oita Airport in Kunisaki City, Oita Prefecture, where Oita Prefecture has joined forces with American space companies and more, aiming to create the first ever horizontal spaceport in Asia.
Our host also tried “space food,” which is sold at "Soranoeki Tabito" inside Oita Airport.
Here you can purchase space-related embroidered badges and pins, as well as confectionery, foods, alcoholic drinks, and kick-knacks from Oita Prefecture.
The space food was actually on board the ISS (International Space Station) and space shuttles, and the most popular type is “Space Bread” (chocolate or milk flavor).
Next time you visit Oita Airport, why don't you try some of the large assortment of available space food, and experience a part of space lifestyle?
Also within the airport is a revamped hot spring footbath with free-flowing water direct from the source area, designed to recreate the experience of being inside a spaceship, and an observation deck representing the charming “sea,” “mountain,” and “sky” scenery of Oita through a wooden deck with curves and height differences, all allowing you to spend your time here in leisure.
Moreover, in order to make the connection between Oita Airport and Oita City even more convenient, a plan is underway to allow sea access via hovercraft.
A hovercraft is a type of amphibious vehicle that can run in all kinds of environments, whether it be over land or water. The only way to get from Oita Airport to Oita City is to go by land around Beppu Bay, which takes extra time.
However, if a hovercraft were in operation, a sea ​​route passing over Beppu Bay could serve as a shortcut, allowing access in around 30 minutes at the shortest.
The hovercraft’s hull design was selected from among the many entries submitted by the public.
We’re looking forward to the day when we can ride this cool hovercraft, and enjoy crossing the sea while admiring the beautiful scenery!
You can also get to places all over Oita Prefecture via highway bus and more from Oita Airport.
After enjoying the attractions of Oita Airport, our host boarded a highway bus with Uchujin U (Alien U), and went to explore Beppu City and Oita City.
At Beppu City, they visited Kannawa Hot Spring, which is one of the Beppu Hatto: a collective name for the eight hot spring villages scattered across Beppu.
This hot spring has the largest concentration of hot spring steam within the entirety of Beppu, and the hot spring aromas permeating the town will no doubt make you feel like you’re on holiday!
At the next destination, Oita City, they visited the Centporta Shopping Arcade in the city center, which overflowed with the smiles and joviality of people coming and going alongside the shop staff, making for a refreshing encounter, even for the alien!
