The reason, well, the main reason I love to watch Mina Kimes is that she always keeps it REAL, no fluff, no talking to you as if your a child, just straight honest opinions. Respect is not given , it's earned. She has mine.
This is a bit of a hot take, but sham interviews is the whole reason I’ve always hated the Rooney rule. As a black man yes it was disappointing that so many black coaches were passed over in years past. But the Rooney rule only forces teams into positions they don’t really wanna be in and increases the likelihood of black coaches being made a mockery of during the interview process. No black coaches wants to be given a job because of a rule, but based off their merits as a coach
For anyone attacking Mina's take on Jerod Mayo's tenure as "woke", keep in mind that the Patriots didn't have to hire him in the first place. By putting them in this situation with a really bad roster, they basically set him up to fail. He didn't do much of anything to help his case either, but when someone like him was just shoehorned into the position because of a contract clause that didn't have to be honored, that has to be acknowledged as part of a poorly managed hiring process just meant to say "Hey, look at us! We're hiring a black coach, we're not racist!" only to get rid of him a year later after a season that went just as expected, albeit with the defense underperforming. The Rooney Rule needs to be abolished. It's not improving diversity in hiring, but rather it provides an out for front offices to pay lip service to diversity so that they can duck racism allegations with plausible deniability.
That rule is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen now the Patriots are getting crap for the interview process when they wanted someone, but they had to interview certain people, even though they didn’t want to hire them. It makes zero sense.
Mayo was a DEI hire in the worst sense of the term. No way does he get that job if Kraft isn't purely trying not to look racist for the performative activist set.
If Kraft had went back on the contract clause with Mayo, he would have been taken to court and it would have been pretty expensive loss for an owner that is notoriously cheap. Agree on your thoughts of the Rooney rule, though. It's a joke.
People act like McDaniels is some old man, he is 48. He is smart and an offensive genius. And best off all he was a terrible head coach, so he can do well here and he will never get another shot at HC. He will just stay and grow with Maye. Reiss may be great, but if he does well he will leave in a year or two to be a head coach. That simply will not happen with McDaniels.
As a Patriots fan, I do agree with Mina about the hiring process. I think Jerod needed to be fired. He was simply not prepared, not good at the podium, and really shouldn't have been hired to begin with. He was under qualified and put in a terrible situation, set-up to fail. My biggest issue with last year's process was how clearly rushed it was... and this year's was also very rushed. I mean, they didn't even bother hiding the Rooney rule satisfactions. Not sure how real of a shot Ben Johnson had, because it truly felt like Vrabel was the guy (hence why Aaron Glenn rightfully declined an interview). However, I think Vrabel is the right hire. As mentioned, he really got the most out of that roster. We've got some really nice pieces on defense (and one stud CB) and obviously all signs point to Drake Maye being a franchise QB. We just need to bring in some weapons, bolster the trenches, and I think Vrabel can get us into the playoff this year. He knows the rules by heart it feels like (that Titans WC game still haunts me). I'm very excited and am eager to see his staff soon.
All I want for draft day is a blindside protector. New England could get a decent haul trading down if Kelvin Banks Jr. is still on the board. Grab a good IOL in the later rounds, that's a 9-win team at least next year.
Exactly and the patriots really wanted him but because of league rules, they were forced to interview other people, even though they didn’t want to. So why would the Patriots get crap? I don’t understand this I really don’t.
The Rooney Rule is so dumb. It’s great in theory but it just ends up wasting the time of talented black coaches with sham interviews. We’d be better without it imo
I still don’t understand why patriots are getting crap for the Rooney rule. Are they not forced to do the interviews? Pretty sure they are. They wanted their person but by nfl rules they have to go interview certain people. So how is it The owner’s fault when they were just doing what they were supposed to do? Unless I just am missing something.
I don't understand the hype around Vrabel. By all accounts, he is going to be a great CEO type HC, but his ceiling is ... Tomlin? People seem to have forgotten Vrabel's Titans didn't score 30 points for almost two years. Will that magically be fixed in New England or will Maye's development be hampered? Just goes to show how much of the coaching cycle is brand and media management.
No, that makes zero sense. It’s not the patriots fault. Go complain to the league about it. The Patriots wanted their Guy, but they had no other choice. They had to interview certain people. So how was it? The patriot’s fault? That makes no sense. They were just doing what they were supposed to do.
@@Slayn- I know it’s so stupid and then the Patriots get crap for doing what they’re supposed to do when everyone knows the Patriots wanted someone. They just had to interview certain people before they could interview the other person. It makes zero sense.
The Rooney rule shouldn’t exist. If you have to force a team to interview based on skin color all you are doing is perpetuating racism… if they want a coach they should be able to hire them without using skin color as a jumping hoop.
Not sure he's much different from Jared Mayo. Vrabel had two essential pieces when three are generally needed on offense. Good luck waiting on the next Bill to develop 5-6 and 7th rounders for chump change! True Patriots.
Mayo was locked into the same old stale system Bill created and, in the end, neither could make it work. If Vrabel is allowed to actually modernize the management system the Pats could do well. And lets remember any "smart decision" you could have made a year earlier isn't nearly as smart.
The Krafts are painfully predictable. Everyone knew that the patriots were getting Vrabel and I just wonder, why did no one want him as head coach last season when he was available?
As much as I hate to criticise Mina, she is totally wrong here. The process is always total sham and the only difference is how committed you are to the pretence. In this case there were three clear candidates (Vrabel, Johnson, Glenn) and anyone else was just a waste of time. I would argue that actually requesting an interview with a serious candidate who is a minority (Glenn declined as he was in high demand) is more substantial than putting on a better show.
People always want to defend and support black head coaches, but no one advocates for an Asian American or Indian American head coach in the NFL. What's will happen first: A Brown's superbowl or a Chinese American head coach?
the difference is 53.5% of the players in the league are black. both racial groups you mention make up less than 0.1%. we are talking a ratio of 535 black players for every Asian or Indian American player. Given there is only 32 jobs, you would consider the hiring on such a coach as a huge statistical outlier.
Silly rabbit, Asians aren't "real" minorities. Just look at the way activists treat them, like "White Lite". That said, where would you find the talent pool for an Asian-American head coach? Maybe a Pacific Islander if you're expanding the definition to "AAPI" (plenty of Samoan former players), but there haven't been a lot of East Asian players or coaches at the lower level.
why is he a great hire? the guy had double digit losing seasons, offense was stagnant and traded away both AJ Brown and Derrick Henry. you can use all the excuses but it happened under his watch as the head coach. only thing vrabel will bring to the patriiots is mediocrity.
@HPC-oh9qy to be fair Vrabel’s decision-making IS pretty impressive and the Pat’s cap space sets him up pretty well, not sure who karen bass is tho that’s a weird pull

Or maybe he was incompetent and was fired for that. You don't know what was happening behind closed doors.
