Alot of people asked for this one in my last video a few days ago, so here it is!

Zenos' charm is his one-dimensionalness. He is a man grown tired of facades, of formalities, of pointless reasonings. He realized that the only thing that matters in the world is the battle itself and the thrill of it. All he wanted was a great battle, his moment in the limelight, one that would be remembered for ages to come. In a sense, he is the opposite of Emet-Selch, who believed in dignity and eternity whereas Zenos lives in the moment driven by primal desire.
As insane as he is, his words do ring true. The whole reason we play FFXIV is to challenge ourselves and fight glorious battles. If a challenge is too easy, then we get bored. Zenos is a very meta-aware character, the shadow to our light, a reflection of our inner drive and desires. What we the players want and what he wants is more or less the same, so he calls us equals that tower over the gods. So I think that Zenos is kind of the ultimate FF character, and I could see him being FFXIV's ultimate opponent as Zodiark's champion.
When the 5.0 trailer came out saying Hydaelyn and Zodiark were primals, one of my reactions was, “Then can Zenos fuse with/hijack them?” Given his comment about gorging on their strength, I think his ultimate objective is for him and the Warrior of Light to possess and BECOME Zodiark and Hydaelyn for our epic final confrontation. That’s my theory, anyway.
Bonus points if the roles are reversed and Zenos possesses Hydaelyn and we must then become Zodiark. It would definitely take our time as a Warrior of Darkness to a whole new level.
When he gave that line at the Royal Menagire about us being like him in regards to being after the challenge, the fact he said this directly into the camera did ring pretty meta to me.
That said, I do love Zenos even outside of the meta side of things. The idea of a man so OP and perfect winding up as such a maniac because of how he's never had to work for anything is a rather interesting deconstruction of the OP warrior. He's by far worse off than he otherwise would be due to how strong he is, it bores him to the point of insanity, and when we come along as the only thing that's ever made him put work, of course he becomes obsessed.

@@bainbonic Zenos is different from most blood knights in that he enjoys the challenge of a battle as opposed to the pleasure of victory. When he was young, Zenos excelled at everything he was tasked with until his father pitted under the tutelage of an Elezan swordmaster. The master destroyed Zenos without even clashing swords and did so every day without even bothering to train the crown prince. But each defeat made Zenos happier, for day by day, he came closer and closer to reaching the master. He researched ways to replicate the aether-based slashes the master specialized in despite his Garlean physiology, resorting to a dangerous process that allowed him to channel aether through a crystal. With this, Zenos finally was able to kill his master. He didn't consider him to be a worthy foe or anything, Zenos forgot the face of his master immediately, but the joy of overcoming a challenge would always remain with him.
Zenos is a fascinating character, and this story underlines just how broken he is. He was raised without love from his father and was groomed to be a Garlean supersoldier. What's sadder is that Varis's neglect of Zenos is indicated to be because of Solus's neglect of Varis, who was heartbroken on how much Varis resembled his beloved son. Also, it's implied that Zenos is some kind of experiment of the Ascians, perhaps engineered by Emet-Selch to be a future host for them. As the crown prince and a prodigy, Zenos was physically given everything he could ever want, but he had no one who loved, nothing that could give him fulfillment. The boy who was created to be a pawn of the empire and the Ascians will do anything to find this fulfillment and is becoming a threat that may eclipse his creators.

I actually liked Zenos from the beginning. And his line when he says we're his enemy and his friend made me "d'aaw" more than I should! :D
I actually never cared for Zenos, but as I made this video I began to get kinda hyped to meet up with him again. See you soon My enemy, My friend.
He IS quite one dimensional but I'll be damned if he doesn't get his time in the spotlight. He's got some absolutely AMAZING dialogue... that coupled with an amazing voice actor? I'm curious to see how this all plays out!
Not all ppl have tragic backstories, and meaningful motivations. As a prince, since birth, he always had everything. Probably never had anyone actually care for him, which made him not care about anyone. After he found his passion in fighting, he never cared about anything else. Looking at his father, its quite obvious he was a completely shit father, so there were never any connection between them, so zenos being indifferent about him is completely understandable.
Zenos isnt a deep character. But he isnt poorly written either. Everything about him is completely understandable and logical.
I love to hate him..... and hate to love him..... but damn.... that line: "My friend, my enemy" makes it rain.... a little.
Zenos will always stand as one of my favorite villains, his motivations on the surface seem cartoonish in his villainy but his psychology behind it is so well written it feels real. He’s the chaos to our order the yin to our yang. “Kill you!? I don’t wanna kill you, what would I do without you!?. You. Complete. Me.” -The Joker
Zenos is what is known as a negative flat character arc. He is a character that doesn't develop much but compliments the Warrior of Light, who is a positive flat character arc and acts as a perfect counterbalance. The reason why Zenos works so well as a villain is the same reason why Frieza works so well in Dragonball Z as both are negative flats opposing positive flat characters. Zenos, like Frieza brings out the worst in everyone around him (Fordola, Yotsuyu, Asahi etc.) while the Warrior of Light brings out the best in everyone around him (Gaius van Baelsar for one). However Zenos cannot corrupt the Warrior of Light, and the Warrior of Light cannot redeem Zenos (again, this is characteristic of the negative flat vs positive flat dynamic). And even despite being a negative flat, Zenos is very interesting when it comes to how a person can become so warped in the first place. Still my favourite villain in FF14.
Tldr; Zenos is the WoL's foil

@Feli Aslan WOL is his only friend because they're the only one that makes him feel alive. When you live for the hunt, live for the fight, you only find joy and meaning in the one who can fight you. Zenos has everything else he needs already. WOL is quite literally the light in his life.
People love to hate him, but I really liked Zenos for being that much stronger than us from the beginning, and the way I see it, while he is one dimensional, what makes him scary as a villain is his potential for growth. Especially as he's essentially an ascian in everything but name now, if we don't conquer him soon, he'll simply grow besides us, driven by the hunt.

I was only missing my favorite line when he kills varis: "any and all who interfere with my hunt, shall not do so twice!"
How could you not like a villain with integrity he said something along the lines of “I don’t send men to battle I lead them” that was tough best villain in the game Stormblood underrated
Zenos saved my life..... I was highly depressed and had plans to kill myself, no girlfriend no reason for living just the same slog everyday. I felt like I was frozen in time and there was no hope, the same routine everyday. But then I played stormblood and he said, Hear me hero, endure, survive, live and it changed me......yes it was for his own reasons not mine but still he gave me the strength to endure, survive, live......Zenos commanded me to live! I now have a wonderful girlfriend and hope.... I never gave up repeating those 3 words everyday... I did it... Thank you Zenos. (Edit.... i still look back on this comment from time to time and its still true everything has gotten better and im still going strong.... i miss you my friend my enemy ... 06/12/2024)

I feel kinda bad for Zenos his whole story-arc is that he's lonely and only connect to other through violence and his "hunt" in a lot of way he could have been a good guy if wasn't born in the royal family of Garlemald.
He was a bit of a bada$$ at the Gimlyt Dark I’ll give him that.

I don't get why people call him one dimensional. Sure we can't relate to him because he's a psychopath, but he literally gives an almost 10 minute speech explaining how he sees the world around him. Not every human being out there has some tragic past, some just don't give a fuck about anyone but themselves.
by one dimensional they mean he is easy to understand, he's simple he wants a good fight and nothing much beyond that.

i think he's a bit divisive half the community either absolutely loves him or hates him.

He is no more a villian than we are a hero. We are most certainly not some valiant pure hearted murderless soul. All of that is laid bare in this expansion, of which i'm glad of. I tire of fake justice. We both stand atop a mountian of bodies, a testament to our current strength. Regardless of the many tasks we seem to find ourselves doing since day 1, Zenos and we are the same. Strip away the inescapble quest, the comical characters, etc..and all you have left is the hunt. Call it what you will and paint it whatever color you wish. Blood has stained our weapons. Only difference is one decidedly omits such a view..and one does not. You would attempt to justify our actions through the many smiles and tears we recieve at the end of our many quests..but sweep under the rug the corpses of those that indeed too had families..friends..ideals..dreams....wishes. We laid them to waste in a manner of seconds repeatedly without batting an eye...for that is *our* hunt. Least you forget why you are level 80 in various positions of power....He is no more a villian than we are a hero.
……….I knew I wasn’t a hero. So why do the scions and everyone else paint us as one. In the end there is no good or bad all that really matters is to survive and fight

Personally I love Zenos as a character he seems like the Sephiroth to the Wol's Cloud also please consider also doing a Alisaie tribute.

I never really enjoyed the "Feral" vibe zenos gave off, but his nigh-obsession with the WoL seen as "your friend, your enemy" was kindof endearing.
But
"Hear me hero. Endure. Survive. Live.
For the rush of blood. For the Time between the seconds. Live.
For the sole pleasure left to me in this empty, ephemeral world, LIVE."
this line felt raw as all hells at the first time i heard it.
It gave me pure motivation, maybe spite or determination, dunno, but it was a line that pumped me up and to this day is probably one of my many favorites in FFXIV
Personally I believe that we, the WOL need Zenos as much as Zenos needs us. The WOL goes about slaying and killing for the scions and Eorzea, we do the same thing as Zenos. We kill. Like him, the WOL is another tool; trapped by circumstances. You can definitely see the parallel of Zenos being another part to the WOL; such a point was made in the DRK quests with Fray. Submitting and becoming one with the abyss. Zenos' spurs and encourages the WOL to aim for more, to grow. We are both his friend and his greatest rival to battle. Zenos knows and understands, and even some of the answers given to us in Stormblood allow us to go down the route, the option of choosing 'I live for the challenge' as a response when talking to Yugiri. There is such poetic beauty to Zenos, to the writing behind all of this. I adore Zenos so much ; __ ;

Much as I love Zenos, not gonna lie, the English voice actor is really good for selling his appeal. Captures so much of Zenos's more interesting traits.

I am absolutely in love with this video. Being a huge fan of zenos, this is like a gift. The music, the dialogue, the scenes and pacing all matches SOSO well together, huge probs to you for creating this masterpiece. It doesn't help that Zenos voice is to die for. I hope you guys are excited for 5.3 as much as I am. They can't show enough of him

I finished endwalker and I can say...Zenos deserves this. He deserves this tribute. My god he was phenomenal in the expansion what a badass bastard.

I have been thinking this lately in the game, The Warrior is a killer, and a very good one, if its intentional the game does an amazing job of letting you slowly realize your a butcher, and nothing that stands it ground in front of you lives, so when Zenos talks about how close he feels to you, its not the usual bad guy speech, he's actually right, you are like him

I'm convinced that Zenos hated being Varis' son and a tool of the Ascians, and looked for ways to bring joy in his life. The WoL finally brought him joy that he sought for so long, and then Zenos wanted to die...
Now that he is essentially a WoL too, he wants to relive that moment of happiness one more time
And im still trying to figure out the secret of his shiny beautiful hair
I guess that even if he murdered us Hydaelin would just do as the ascians do with dead enemies and rezz us even stronger than we were before to fullfill her goals.
You have one final tribute to make. One last hurah to savour the moment between the seconds. One last tribute to our first friend...our enemy. Such a long journey so many tears so many laughs. We have walked to the end but we must walk further to something new.

Most underrated ff villian
I adore the rivalry between Zenos and the WoL. There’s something so purely visceral about his lust for a true battle, one that only we have ever been able to provide. He’s also one of the few characters in the game to have actually posed a *real* threat, namely at the Reach, where he cut down many of our friends with little effort. He made us break through our ceiling to reach him towering 2 stories above us
i remember people shitting on zenos after stormblood. Always loved the dude, reminded me a bit of perfect cell. But then he got soooo deep

Zenos was a mirror to the player, not the Warrior of Light, YOU the PLAYER. We come to this game to fight, we fight because we enjoy it, and purely by happenstance does our interest align with the common good. A happy happenstance if you would, as we would hardly get as much fighting if we were also the bad guys.
But Zenos held and gave no misapprehensions about why he wanted to fight, but similar to the players, he never truly cared about the other characters. But the WoL was different, they were special. We were kindred spirits. Two sides of the same coin. While Zenos did bad things, it's Nothing compared to Emet Selch, Meteon, Omega, Lahabrea, etc, but for them we were almost expected to forgive them. But if we cannot accept Zenos and his nature, then we cannot accept ourselves and our own nature.
Zenos is, again, our mirror image. He is a desire to fight, to fight something strong, challenging, but where we helped, he harmed, this gave us our perfect enemy, and only true friend. Because he is everything that we are, that we want. HE is what reaches back to us when we reach out for something to fight, and WE are what reaches back to him when he reached out for something to fight. He was the Only character that could truly understand Us, the player, not just our character, the Warrior of Light.

zenos feels very underrated to me,he may be nuttier than a squirrel but he gets me its scary but also awesome. i do enjoy a good fight i wont lie if i could do so for real i dont think id be online so much id be trying to win jarate tournaments and shit.

Actually in my opinion zenos was the only thing that made me read all the dialogs from storm blood and dont skip every thing , god how i HATE "Lyse", she just cryed the hole expansion and did nothing usefull , and the wrost part was the fact that gosetsu sacrifice was wasted in the plot when he just appered fine and well at ''POST Storblood" dude that was anti climatic as f@#%#@!
I loved Zenos from the moment of his introduction. This is how to properly make a villain that massively outpowers your hero! Unlike, say... Ran'jit or something. He was just annoying and boring.
I'm SO hyped for the next expansion. I'm ready for more of my favorite villainous boy!

I'm afraid this one to me is too soon, Zenos is way underdeveloped (still?).
Please don't get me wrong! I love your work, but it's like painting a beautiful picture of compost.
It's a beautiful creation, but the inspiration and picture is based on excrement that may (hopefully!) turn into an amazing figure!
Edit: I just noticed this is already 10 months old, as of 5.3 in the west, the view on Zenos stands :P Japan loves him tho, idk why.
