    WOW! I just had an incident where wind, rain, and tides proved a bit much for my Volvo diesel to push my 30’ sailboat back to dock and resulted in a very fun sounding *BOOM* and no more starting. I was looking for various conversions and found your first video with the chain drive, I am so impressed with your incredibly simple design. I’m an automotive engineer so I was thinking maybe a Honda 1.8l or similar, but this simple electric conversion is awesome! Obviously not going to reach speed boat speeds but who cares, it’s a sailboat and I’m loving the electric motor. Good job!

    Great video Phil. The gearbox on my Volvo Penta 25hp has seized and I am considering changing to electric. Your setup is the easiest to fit that I have seen. I imagine I might need a bigger motor though. My boat is 30ft steel 4.5 tonnes. Any recommendations?

    • @philcostello6989
      @philcostello6989  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Alex, my boat is a flat bottom sharpie with less than half your weight my guess is you would need probably a 10 KW motor there several suppliers out there that have kits .electricyacht.com/product/quiettorque-10-electric-motor/ I would Google electric inboard conversions and scour all there installation data and sizing data this is just one of them. That would be my first step. Then I would join as many as possible groups do in board electric conversions to see what types of problems people are having .

      Don't think bigger engine for speed , think pulley configuration for more speed 3:1 instead of 2:1 ..
      I just got a 1.25kw trolling motor 24v on my 53ft steel narrowboat ! Works beautifully ! Though I am inland..

    So, what exactly is the draw to convert to electric drive in a boat? What is better about it than using an engine?

    • @philcostello6989
      @philcostello6989  2 роки тому

      For me it charges by the solar panels so never need to carry battery’s or gas back and forth to boat and it’s also great when you need a little assist to turn if the sails aren’t balanced well the electric motor turns on and of with no effort

    Where did you find the belt pulley to go onto the My 1020?

    • @philcostello6989
      @philcostello6989  13 днів тому +1

      I was able to purchase the pulley at the website. Electricscooterparts.com
      I purchased a belt from them and I think I also purchased a belt from Granger or McMaster car. I’m not sure which one came from which. Granger and McMaster car are industrial supply catalogs now they’re actually online.

    How many amps are your batteries and what is the range?

    • @philcostello6989
      @philcostello6989  3 роки тому +1

      I have a breaker set to 50 amps amp I drew close to that at max speed if I accelerate to fast it will pop it still working on soft start setting so I can't make that happen. At 3 knots its about a third but I have to collect some more data on that to know for sure its hard to see the digital read outs in the day time Sun

    Any suggestions on what size motor needed to power a Maxum 2800 SRC ?

    • @philcostello6989
      @philcostello6989  3 роки тому +1

      I would think you would want to start with the first power of the original engines I did a video call tales of speed power and torque which was kind of how I came up with sizing my motor before you pull the trigger on an electric motor though you also want to make sure you size the batteries and realize that let us it would probably not be the way to go for a powerboat

    • @philcostello6989
      @philcostello6989  3 роки тому +1

      Sorry it's called speed torque and prop pitch that went through how I size my motor for my sailboat I think it might be a good starting place to go through that process for what you want to do as well

  • @jacobfarms650

    What size batteries do you have and what kind of max speed and range can you achieve?

    • @philcostello6989
      @philcostello6989  3 роки тому +2

      I have four group 27 Duracell that acid batteries that are 12 volts 80 amp hours a piece unfortunately what acid really handicap you on the range but for getting in and out of the slip it's fine the 80 hours has to get cut in half because I can't go below a certain level to maintain cycle life. And then there's a resistance cost you see the batteries are designed to be discharged slowly with low current the 80 amp hours is set for four amp hours an hour for 20 hours they give a rating of If you use 25 amp hours the battery only lasts for like an hour and 15 minutes so 25 amp hours depending on the current I'm usually between three and four knots so my range is about four knots. I think another people on this forum probably know a lot better than me but the equivalent lithium ion 48 volt battery is about 30 amp hours and you'll actually got a much longer life out of that if you buy buy it. For me this started as an experiment and it's worked out really well because really I just use the motor to get in and out of my slip I do have a backup gas outboard. But I've never had to use it. For any kind of range I would strongly recommend considering a lithium ion solution. The other thing for me is in my boat I needed to add ballast so the added weight of batteries just means I can take out more rocks LOL

      All I have been able to get it up I have another video actually I have been able to get it up to about 5 Knott's but I don't think the battery will last more than half hour at that speed. And I was only able to do it once most of the time when I got it I can only get about four and a half that's knotts
