  • In this video I discuss and demonstrate how the ADI Disc Brakes work on my TiLite ZR wheelchair. These brakes are independently operated (left and right) allowing the ability to steer the wheelchair and safely descend hills. Check out ADI Rides for more info.

That's awesome! It was on my list of inventions, but I guess someone beat me to it. I've only been in the chair 2 years, so I guess I still have a lot to learn.

First of all, I want to thank you for sharing your videos!! You do such a great job explaining things in detail and sharing your own tips and experiences to others. I'm curious about these disc brakes and noticed you only appeared to use them for about a year...and then stopped. I'm interested in them since my driveway is on a hill and the handrims are extremely hot in the summer months...also, the rain is a challenge too.

I had my chair shipped to Stealth and they put a whole new system on my chair. Once I got it balanced right, from some help from Chad at Stealth, it has worked as designed. My adjustments are rare and very small when I have to make tighten the brakes. Thank u to Stealth for helping me out.

Thanks for another excellent, informative video. Totally agree with your assessment! The weight is worth the benefit for keeping straight on sidewalks alone, dramatically more so if one wheels in even nominally hilly area. These are the only true brakes for wheelchairs, not just locks. I have the one-handed lever, which works well with more limited hand function and a service dog. Adjusting these brakes takes a bit of mechanical savvy and good hand function, or it can be done by a bicycle specialist (i.e., not pay through the nose to DME). I found it added only 0.5" to my chair width compared to previous setup with spacers. Also advise using ADI's Sun Fusion Wheels with splice built in to save bit of weight--they are good and rigid, and have black spokes and hub which look good. Brakes are very expensive, but can usually be justified for insurance to preserve hands for long-term use.
For comfortable hand rim that protects from cold, keeps from slipping in wet, and is proving very durable and no special maintenance, have you tried the Rib Grips? They are available at ribgrip dot com. Look very cool (black and colors), and feel more secure than any other rim I have tried.

Thank you for showing the breaks with the smart drive! I was wondering how sensitive the breaks are? Like how hard you have to squeeze for a good response? I have very sensitive hands/arms (arthritis and chronic tendonitis), and just adjusting for slight camber and some light steering, on my first smart drive outing, has torn my hands/arms up so much I expect to take 2-3 weeks to recover. There aren't any power systems with joysticks that are available in the US that also fit my chair. I'm really trying to find solutions for the smart drive to work for me, despite my hand issues.
But I have no concept for how much squeezing action is needed for this break system. I know it's hard for you to describe since it's all subjective, but thought it was worth asking anyway. Thank you! 😊

So I guess you have a different chair now, but on this chair in the video, it looks you had Spinergy LX wheels. I just got a new set of those same wheels, but they need longer axles than what I currently have. Their wheel hubs are just a bit wider than “normal” wheel hubs. Do you happen to know what length axles are required for these?

Is there a way to do the ADI brakes without making the wheelchair overall width wider? I have a Ti Lite ZRA with a 20” wide seat. Even with the push rims on the short throw my wheelchair is around 28” wide. This is pushing the limits of the ramp going in my van and the doors in my home. I like the idea of the ADI brakes, but can’t do it if it’s going to make my wheelchair any wider.

I have been looking for these brakes for the past few years, after I seen a picture of the axel tube, discs and cable on eBay, but then couldn't find out anything else about them. I live in area where there is no support for ppl with SCI or neuro damage, or any other type of disability for that matter, but even the wheelchair distribution company we have to go through has no options, and their "seating specialists" have no knowledge of the different tech thats out there, unless its spoon fed to them by National Seating & Mobility. Sorry for the rant.....does anyone know where these cam be ordered from?

Just curious. How come you don't have/use handles on the sides of your chair? I'm a t5 and I couldn't live without mine. Not only do they give me a bit of "safety" feeling having something at my sides but they also give me more stability having something more to grab or lean on that my tires. They also make sitting more comfortable as it's easier to hold my self in place from falling over.

    • @ParalyzedLiving

I had arm rests at first but ditched them because they were a pain and just another piece to take on/off the chair.

    • @jakedegrand2674
      @jakedegrand2674 Рік тому +1

Thats what I was wondering as well. I was trying to remember if 1 is at the top or bottom. Im a T5/T6, and would never have been able to sit in my chair without usin the armrests to hold myself up. But thats also because they fused damn near from my hips to the base of my neck 2yrs after I was paralyzed, and in the proceeding 26urs, those rods in my spine have been pushing or pulling(?) my upper torso further and further out over my casters to the point that I can barely keep my self from tipping over without always having one hand or the other gripping thr arm rest.

I love this and want it (my main wheeler is TiLite ZR)
Plus I want to drop from 24 to 22” x2” wide wheels with Kenda all terrain tires.
(End result is same overall height as boney wheels/tires now).
Plus I want to get TiLite single side front caster forks put extension axle for 110mm NBS all terrain long board wheels
Mostly EVERYTHING I DO IS ROUGH HILLY GROUND.. so this is truly more necessary than my just wanting it…
Plus wheelers with this application are actually really cool looking. It starts getting that “bull dog” stance and sort of takes the fragility out of the picture.
And yes it’s going to add few pounds, and I’m good with that.
I’m guessing this is probably 2k plus ? But a Box Daily wheeler is 7000.00 so it’s worth it.
I want a BOX daily with suspension on my next wheeler but this one is still like new EXCEPT rear tires and front castors are trashed already from sharp gravel (that’s my issue a lot) plus it wears me out, I get stuck and grrr.
I cant find this on their website
I wrote an email hoping they will get back with me.
    Thanks for sharing
Not many people do stuff like this (and put it on line)
I see them online but it never seems to get me the information I want to do this
I can do all this myself easy
Plus I can reset centre of gravity and all that.
    I just need parts.

    • @ParalyzedLiving
      @ParalyzedLiving  8 місяців тому +1

I think you have a good plan with the smaller knobby wheels/tires! Unfortunately, I think this assembled disc brake “kit” has been discontinued since I too recently searched for it. The chair in this vid was destroyed when I was struck by a car and I chose not to get a new set when the chair was replaced in 2018 since I had a newborn daughter and I was afraid as a young toddler, she would stick her fingers in them. I don’t think they are 100% necessary either but they were cool when I had them. That’s not to say you couldn’t fabricate something similar with bicycle parts but it would be custom and take some welding/machining skills to re-create. Good luck with whatever you decide and thanks for your message!!

      Good grief…
I wasn’t expecting the story about someone hitting you in the wheelchair..
Apparently you survived, but if it destroyed the wheeler it couldn’t have been good.
I am so remote most the time the only way I’m going to get hurt is by my own stupidity.. and it happens unfortunately.😖
I recently fell out of my Jeep getting wheels in the Jeep… yeah I forgot seat belt. I fell right into the folded up wheelchair with no wheels on it…
It cost 3 stitches and some pride…
Lol. It’s one of those stories that has my stupidity and rushing written all over it.
I’m learning if I have to be in a hurry just be late or rearrange whatever is going on.
      On the wheels/brakes thing.
      TiLite was acquired by Permobil
It seems they are buying up a lot of the industry but not carrying over any after market parts? Or I haven’t found them yet.
I see the same kit on other brands including BOX (but information apparently isn’t given unless it’s for a BOX chair). 😖
It’s like a hidden segment of the small industry (and I’m sure that has a lot to do with it).
But I will figure it out even if I have to build it myself
(The spline thing is mainly the only part I haven’t found) and it might be part of the Spinargy hub? Not sure but am going to ask.

I purchased these from stealth and I'm having nothing but issues. The new lever they provided does not lock my brakes enough at all. The locking point is way too low for the chair to stay put. It moves almost as if there are no brakes. I'm trying to get this issue resolved. Being that these brakes cost me about $1300, they have been a nightmare. They no longer provide those handles you have, because they dont pull enough cable, but these new cheap plastic levers seems to be useless.
