My Four Time Great Grandfather fought in Napoleon's Grande Armee. He was 20 when he survived the Russian invasion and retreat. He also fought at the Battles of Leipzig and Waterloo. He was captured by the Prussians at Waterloo so I think he might've been in Grouchy's 30,000 who were sent to pursue the Prussians, to prevent them from consolidating with Wellington and the British, and spent 6 months at a POW camp in Danzig. Since he was an ethnic German from Alsace Lorraine I would bet that he was a translator between the German speaking Prussians and his French comrades. If I ever have a son, his middle name will be Nikolaus in his honor. Also I'm such a HUGE Napoleon nerd that this is my favourite Total War game hands down. Also Wellington was given an honorary Spanish aristocratic title of Viscount. Also I hate to admit it but I used to play games like this on the easiest difficulty because I just want to enjoy the experience and dominate and really not have a challenge but I've started to play on harder difficulties. Now that I know that normal is THIS easy I'm going to try that difficulty for the first time next time I play Empire and Napoleon Total War.
It fixed a lot of what sucked about Empire, while leaving what we actually want in a game like this behind. It's not just the scale, there's no empire building like in Shogun 2, you already start with decent countries.
@@случайныйрусскийСлова Well tbh I didn't try world domination but i my fastest campaign win was probably 1806. But generally i wipe out england, prussia, austria, russia and a few other countries by 1811
I'm a Canadian born in 1994 so I was too young to remember but I know that back in 2001 the Canadian dollar was worth 50 cents American. I know it's not the same as your situation where your currency has triple digit inflation but still.
What I liked about total war napoleon campaigns was how objectives actually had a point. Instead of hey capture this city for 2000 gold. It would be like capture Vienna to force Austria to sign peace. To me that seemed more realistic. It wasn’t just capture cities 1 by 1. You could do that or you could play riskier and break through to try and capture the objective quickly.
Really loved this game when it first came out. An improved version of Empire in terms of gameplay but definitely limited in scope. Naval battles were brilliant and beautiful. Line battles very much just sit back, let them come to you and shred them. Thing I found when playing as UK you needed to spam trade ships for the first year or so otherwise you could t support any decent sized land army - fairly realistic then!
What grinds my gears about napoleon total war, is that it's like Attila. The factions are already big, everything is established. And you as the player has to roll with it. I prefer raising my faction from a tiny village to dominating half of the world. Because it was build on my way of things.
It might be worth having a look at Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai. It's similar to napoleon but with way more cannons and cooler guns (and an AI that doesn't fully get that they shouldn't chuck their samurai at your cannons).
I find FOTS to be more frustrating than Napoleon because the way the campaign A.I is designed, it's very easy for you to lose even if you play everything perfectly. Factions on the other side of the map will randomly declare war on you and send doom stacks to you, enemy ships bombard all your coastal provinces (so like, 85% of your provinces) relentlessly, and your allies backstab you even if it would be seriously bad for their position. In Napoleon, if you played well, you would always win. In FOTS you can play perfectly and have the A.I still make your life a nightmare.
@@brainwasher9876 try darthmod, it's increase your garrison and reduce AI spam, however you still have to deal with continuously manual fight to win defense battle even when you have to do is just form a formation and AFK

The game aged well.
I just tried to load this up as you clicked the upload button for this video. Unfortunately for me, I was unable to get the game to run, as usual. So now I'm here.
I stopped playing games in the late 2000s out of boredom so games from that period like this one feels brand new to me. Thank you for taking the time to review such an old game. As always, the strategy games community is awesome!
Napoleon Total War was the first total war game I ever played, and I was pretty young at the time. I never figured out campaign cause I was an idiot but I was fully happy to just play custom battles and watch the melee animations. I've been meaning to get back to it at some point, partly because it is one of the few (to my knowledge) TTW games where you can play as Sweden.
Napoleon is one of my favorite Total War games when playing unmodded TW (not a big fan of how loud it is with the constant musket firing). Ironically, I still love Empire TW the most. I think it is the variety of the quality of military units. The idea of line infantry fighting Indian scouts is fun. I just don't feel that with other iterations, no matter how many different units they have.
I like it how some youtubers have been posting for like 6 years and they only have 500k subs and Apollo has been posting for 4 half years and already is close to a mill
The grand campaign was the best total war I ever played. Playing as the Russians and getting to the Unicorn artillery was truly some of the most visually astonishing battles I have enjoyed in total war. Thousands of men shooting at eachother as the unicorns rain fiery hell down on the enemy was amazing.
I remember modding the game to have x6.875 unit count and 40 unit cards in campaign, so that I had historical regiment sizes. I remember fighting battles with 35000 men on both sides, where there were bloody engagements..... and lots of crashes.
I never knew why I didn’t really like this game until you said it because I loved Empire. If Empire had Napoleon gameplay it would’ve been my favorite of all time.
I noticed that when you were attacking the soldiers in Paris they had soldiers that take a while to access like the young guard and the Grenadier cavalry. How did they do that is there a way in the options menu?
The best part of this Total War is, that you can just defeat Napoleon over and over again, it's so satisfying to see him fall. I liked the original game very much, but there are great mods for this. My personal favorite is NTW3, it makes this game so much more realistic and fun
I've only ever played Empire and Shogun 2, both of which I liked greatly. Though coming from a game where guns are the most powerful thing ever to a game where units without guns are just distractions to throw at the enemy can be a bit jarring.
It's a lot more like Shogun 2, gameplay wise, but melee is a lot less common. Same idea though, flanking or doubling up on a unit wins. Artillery is three times more important than Empire, and I don't play Shogun much so I forget how important Arty is there.
@The Nova renaissance Mangonels seem like complete shit in sieges because you always spawn too far away for them to reach. They work great in defensive sieges though.
@The Nova renaissance Yeah, in my experience, sieges are almost never worth actually playing unless you're the one defending. Siege weapons are amazing on an open field.

I got it for $6 somewhat recently. It's not bad honestly. I didn't play alot, and chose Prussia so no Naval battles. But I really like line infantry battles. I'm going to have to go play Britain or something and try the Naval battles. Hopefully the next historical title will be Empire 2. (Probably med 3 tbh, but one can hope)
Was curious how this has held up; and I think quite well actually! If you enjoy gunpowder line battles like this, you should check out Ultimate General: Civil War. Think you'd like it!
For anyone who doesnt know, the great war mod turns napoleon into a very good ww1 campaign. And darthmod is a complete rework new units unit sizes mechanics and so on. Check them out if you love napoleon or even if you didnt and want a different flavour.
ETW or FOTS are most fun for total war games for me. Haven't got around to modding ETW, but I've played around 1000hrs of Shogun 2. 400+ on ETW. Not played Medieval Two, Warrhammer or China one (newest). Got full versions of Attilla, Rome 2 and Troy (Troy is a soggy jigsaw puzzle of an arcade game.)

Interesting that you prefer defense tactics to win. I like to have offensive attack by splitting my forces considerably across map. For example if I have 2 artillery, take 2 different hills left and right of map. Any cav and general take a woods in middle, then a bit of mix and match with what ever infantry is in the open. Fire the guns and run infantry on one side at AI, ai usually reacts with a counter charge, engage, but hold back strong infantry to shoot as weaker infantry advances for melee towards ai. Ai usually pretty weak by time get to melee at which point the cav in centre mops up. Do same on other side, at this point ai sends majority of forces to fight, send cav round the back take out ai guns, mop up from behind guns take out general or enemy cav. I rarely win if I let ai attack first

I love the Napoleonic era, so therefore I love this game. My only complaint is I wish the European map for the Grand Campaign was bigger and had more of N. Africa, Egypt and also more of the Scandanavian countries on the map. Otherwise with Darthmod its awesome and I replay it every now and then.
Napoleon TW isn't bad, but it should've been a Empire dlc. Or they should've worked on an Empire theater dlc maybe featuring south America or asia or something
It's a shame they seem to have restricted the grand campaign to solely Europe. Since Napeon can only be understood within a broader global context. If England isn’t divided between their colonial empire, the beginning of the decolonization process and preventing the whole of Europe to be conquered by the French; the whole experience seems to be quite one-dimensional. Now it seems to be either to help the French or fight the French. While Creative Assembly could have easily incorporated the broader global picture and allow belligerents to either support, combat or take their own advantage of the decolonization process that came with this temporary shift in power. Massive changes in power could have happened in that Era. In that aspect CA seems to rightfully appreciate it’s ‘Total War value’. It would be great to start of your campaign in South America or Haïti. Picking (temporary) alliances that should secure the future of your freshly decolonized nation? I love how they incorporated the rise of Belgium in the game like they did with Norway back in Empire. They could have even kept the emerging USA and Gran Colombia since both of them are in fact related to the French revolution.
You should try multi player on Napoleonic TW3. It's a historical and realistic-ish mod especially made for multiplayer that is quite fun to play when you know the game, however it's quite difficult to start with. I think you should like it. You should try multi player on Napoleonic TW3. It's a historical and realistic-ish mod especially made for multiplayer that is quite fun to play when you know the game, however it's quite difficult to start with. I think you should like it. And as you like line battles and great atmosphere, in this mod, it's really awesome.
Totally agree with you rome total war is the best total war game and third age total war saved medieval 2
