i'm thinkin' a tie with Like a Rolling Stone, with a very similar vibe. P P & M were such a massive contribution to the Folk scene, the artistry they showed with Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind made it the most important song of that movement IMHO

Funny you mentioned that (a year ago). I was just thinking about my own dad who passed in 2018. He was a talented, but humble musician who, when he finished playing a song forward would play it backward. His kid brother (still living) says that it was because as boys, they started a two-man band and only had enough money for sheet music for like 10 songs. They had to improvise.... Thanks, Dad, we miss you.

      ua-cam.com/video/wOKDT0S2O3c/v-deo.html
Studio recording tied to live video. Now THIS is great.
However, while music, like art, is in the EAR of the beholder; and as a musician and guitarist of 56+ years, with a three-year stint as a studio engineer, producer, musician and writer, I can say that their version does not begin to compare to that of PP&G. The harmony of Peter Paul & Mary is right up front and in your face, with little studio enhancement, with three of the best voices ever recorded. Just two guitars, string bass and three voices ... as raw and pure as it can get, and yet, they pull it off with incredible perfection, warmth and artisanship.
But, it's all good. Two incredibly wonderful groups, playing an incredibly wonderful genre of music: FOLK!

If you analyze this song lyric for lyric its not mean at all- its more disappointment, defeat and understanding of the reality of true love- its the realization that a soulmate never gave them a chance to be real partners to begin with, always playing games of the flesh and mind rather than having a conversation. Hypothetically, if the girl in the song tells him "Ok im rdy to settle down with you , and make a family" , what does the narrator do ? Gives a few hints in the song that he'd go running back ... He is asking "What if" throughout all his negativity, trying to deter himself from thinking(again) that it could happen. "I once loved a woman , a child im told" - The meanest line in the whole song, is probably not even the narrators words, as he is attributing them to someone else (possibly a friend :P). Having been in this exact situation as the narrator, and as the friend of the narrator, this is way way past the "mean" part of the breakup. Its like 2-5-10 years down the line in the timeline :P

Why would anyone thumbs down this? It’s absolutely beautiful. Although 70 million people voted for trump for a 2nd term and I don’t understand that either. Oh well, at least there’s good music out there!

I'm an older guy (man I like saying that lol) but yet the sound of this song remains a mystery which I feel both happy and cheated as I've honestly came to realize I've not heard it in all my years! I must've heard it but I'll tell ya I'm gonna say NO because the flow of the song already has me playing it a few times now and it's gone into my saved playlist so I know I'd have known it all these years. Regardless....what a story and harmony!

I learned to play this in the key of G nearly sixty years ago using what I called the F position in the third fret. I can still sort of do it, but my fingers won't bend any more, so it doesn't have the impact it did. I never learned all the words, and one of my sons had to tell me who wrote it much later. He's a real musician. I was shown how to play four chords when I was nine, and pretty much managed from there.
Hearing PP&M brings back a part of the time in my life I miss. Can't say I miss everything about the time, but I was privileged and didn't really understand what others were dealing with.

It was from Peter, Paul and Mary that I learned my preference in music lay toward Folk and Folk Rock, not the Andy Williams and Bing Crosby my mother listened to nor the Hank Williams of my father. I grew up to add a lot of one genre and a little of others until my favorites list is pretty eclectic, but I always slide back to the folk and especially these three.

This song is not that simple. The guitar music is complicated, and the way the lyrics fit is not intuitive.

I wish you could have been alive (as was I) back when this music and the passion that drove it was fresh. Those were heady and awesome days, and my deepest regret is that the visionary wave (that actually had a considerable amount of influence back then) lost it's force. We were all about peace and harmony and sharing and taking care of the earth. I will never understand what happened to all the hippies. They vanished.
Anyway, Godspeed to you young folks!!!

This recording was released within a year or two of my birth so I literally have known & loved it , since I began recognizing radio & music ( sometime in either elementary school or possibly Jr High School ages).
Hard for me to conceive, that this means btw 40-50 yrs [ its release was early / mid 1960s, I wasn't especially focused on radio, until approx 10 yrs later], but that's what the arithmetics produce...
Anyway, even though I have the melody, the lyrics & PPM's particular recording/ performance entirely memorized...
I just listened to it again
( Nov 2022) and it STILL makes tears come to my eyes. Profound effects from Mr Dylan's writing and the utterly exquisite, delicate; yet somehow , also powerful performance by PPM & the bass player, not as known or as often described. I found two different fellows' names as playing bass w their recordings/ performances, in different articles....
