I agree on all counts. I've been using a 4:1 speed reducer for about 2 years on my Consew and love the results. One caution is since the machine is running slower, the onboard oil pump may not deliver enough lubrication. I've adjusted mine for max flow and run it at full motor speed when winding bobbins. That seems to be keeping it well lubricated. You've been a great source of information Harry - thanks for taking the time to post your videos!

thanks Harry for the video and the links i am a retired Woodworker that took up sewing as a hobby about 15 years ago mainly to make things for my Boats and Vintage cars i did buy a Chinese Clone walking foot sewing machine and so far ive been using it as it was shipped to me i have been interested in learning more about leather and a few times i thought about up grading to the servo motors you refer to overall i’m quite handy and mechanically inclined so i liked the way you built your gear reduction system with easy to obtain Shafts and Pillar bearings with doing auto interiors my machine has the power needed but as a novice i thought it might be better to slow up on complicated curves and some other areas because of my machine being a clone its often harder to call up a manufacturer directly and get off the shelf parts ive even thought about having a machine shop building me special pulleys but using your style i dont think i’ll need to go to that extreme or cost btw i am in the United States and i have a local repair shop that carries a lot of parts for different machines plus Sailrites parts fit mine as well and they have a decent online catalog of parts
That's great. I think the pulleys should be readily available...they are for m section sewing machine belts. The axle and bearing blocks are readily available including off the likes of EBay. I had to tap axle bolts on my pulleys as they only had a keyway. Best wishes Harry

Thanks Harry, I have a 3/1 speed reducer on my Juki 1509N and I would not be without it. It would be quite difficult to sew intricate leather stitching at full speed and not make a mistake. I know exactly what you mean by the initial sharp start and it helps with this as well. You can of course order speed reducers direct from USA and have them shipped over. Something else, I also have been using a Singer 211 for 25 years and it might be me, but although the JUKI modern machines are great, I just seem to get more feel control with my Singer 211, hard to explain, perhaps more ergonomic for sewing. So i will be fitting a SR on that shortly. Great video's as usual.
Thank you ! what a relief is to find people in youtube sharing the exact experience i'm having without being sure what to do, wondering if a different servo controller can solve it, wondering about returning back the motor i've just bought... now i know this is a very common problem specially on not super expensive servo controllers, whý the motors doesn't come with a mechanical speed reduction gear built in ? it's smaller than a pulley system but anyway yes, i'm definitely going to follow your steps, my motor has a 1 to 40 speed control and i can't start below 5 but the strange thing is if i set maximum speed to 2 it starts from 5 and then lows to 2... i still not sure if my controller is faulty but now i'm much less desperated, thank you !
Thanks ...my latest motor seems a lot more controllable...it came with the machine....but yes the pulleys certainly transform my Jack servos that are about 4 or 5 years old.

I'm runnung a simple 750W servo motor with needle positioner. Any idea how to get the needle positioner working after using a speed reduction? Your videos are so informative and helpful. Thank you, Harry!
Interesting....I have not set up the needle positioning...do the pulleys make a difference? The rotor unit clips to the handwheel axle...a single belt must slip?? If you or anyone here finds any answers it would be good to add them here...thanks ...very interesting.
depending on the ratio of the speed reducer a NPS may fail. i was able to tune my NPS for usage with a 500W servo and 3:1 reducer on a Singer 201. simply added a second magnet into the detection box. Works flawless . high torque, slow speed, under desk mount and needle stops in most up or most down position, whenever you lift foot from pedal.
I think it matters, I have not calculated to confirm...so small motor pulley to big pulley small pulley to machine...you can calculate the reduction ratio using pie radius squared etc.
We're you get them belts from as once the pulley reduction is in place you need different size belts I have done the pulley system but can't seem to find a place to get the belts made to size I need.
They are m section sewing machine belts...in the UK I got them from College Sewing Machines UK...they should be available from industrial sewing machine suppliers. To get an approximate belt length I used a piece of string between the pulleys.
It depends what you want it for as machines tend to be specific to the leather thickness...but it's worth looking at clone machines such as Tysew and Highlead. If you are doing flat sewing only ...like wallets...no raised seams...then walking foot is not so essential.....and a second hand Singer 31k 331k would be a cheap option.

Hi Harry. Do you have a link to the larger pulley for your reduction system. Simply cannot find the type M belt pulley in a 175mm pulley
I think College Sewing Machines UK have them up to about 140mm.
