My Response To Fatphobia Claims

- I was scrolling through reddit today and came across this post saying I have “fatphobic tendencies”. This was really hard for me to read and caused me to take a critical look back at my previous comments regarding obesity, bariatric treatments, and diet recommendations (Keto, intermittent fasting, vegan, etc.) Our culture demonizes people for their weight, from rogue marketing pushing “ideal bodies” in media to a lack of representation for large bodied people on stage and on screen. That being said, I am a doctor, and my job is to help people live longer, healthier lives, and often those results can be achieved through a variety of tactics that will reduce the weight of people who suffer from obesity. It’s a fine line between helping my patients and making sure they don’t feel judged or criticized for the way they look, and I’m working hard to get it right.

I hear you, but just to play devils advocate, a lot of fat people hear this again and again from people who don’t know anything about their lifestyle. I just think there’s a possibility that this person just took it personally because maybe they’ve heard it before from people who aren’t actually knowledgeable and since he’s not their doctor, they felt like he made blanket statements (which may or may not be true, I haven’t seen many of his lifestyle type videos). Calling someone “morbidly obese” means “you should lose some weight for your health”, not “haha ur fat!”.

Yes although that’s not what they said. I wholeheartedly disagree with what they said but they used the term fat phobic not fat shaming. The difference is that fat phobic is the notion that one fears fat people so to them they shouldn’t be a thing, i can see why this vision could be attributed to health professionals as doctors would normally never advise one to be overweight or stay overweight for obvious health reasons but i mean that’s the point of their profession, no one should blame them for promoting a healthy lifestyle with healthy life goals and them doing so doesn’t mean they are judgemental either so their stance on the matter is just stupid to me.

Exactly. Body positive is supposed to mean, hey this person is heavier than others but they’re still a human being so we should treat them like everyone; not if you workout you hate fat people
I think often it more comes with the territory as his job is to pressure people about fat, cholesterol, and blood pressure. I think when your a person body positivity is overall a good thing because everyone has the doctor to tell them this stuff.
There is a small group of people in the body positivity movement who legitimately think there is nothing unhealthy with being fat. I've seen it go as far as shaming people for losing fat for their health. But body positivity isn't about saying being fat is healthy, it's about recognizing that fat people are people with value and worth. And yes, you can be, by all measures healthy and overweight... But all the evidence points towards the fact that it causes stress in all the systems in the body and eventually leads to disease.
Being body positive simply means not to hate on people. Nobody's body is absolutely perfect and there is always something you can help yourself with
It's not monolithic.
Some 'fat' people really can't lose the weight, even if they're healthy. It's a small percent, but it's worth taking into consideration.
As a formerly obese person, I appreciate Dr. Mike and wish I had someone like him in my corner when I was younger. He is not fat phobic, he is a doctor who obviously cares about his patients and is trying to share his extensive knowledge. Not all Doctors in the media are “Dr.” Oz.

It's bc of the pressure society puts onto people to achieve the desired body or "body goals" and it's talking abt appearance. Loving yourself genuinely imo is taking good care of yourself, eating what's best for you, getting exercise and sleep and just listening to your body's needs in general. Telling someone they won’t be able to find love because they’re fat is fatphobic.
Saying you’re at a risk of type 2 diabetes when you’re overweight is not.
This is an excellent point. Fatphobia is when people say you are: lazy, disgusting, mean, stupid, ugly, worthless, don’t deserve respect or rights, should be treated unequally and should be shunned in society because you are fat. Health is important and should be sought out. I think health is less tied to the number on the scale or bmi and more about your habits. Do you eat balanced meals and exercise often? Do you avoid harmful habits like smoking and excessive drinking? If you get the recommended amount of exercise and eat with nutrition in mind, weight, shape, or size shouldnt really matter. As someone who is very anti-fatphobia, all i ask is people stop judging me, being cruel to me, prevent me from opportunities that i am well equipped for such as jobs, and constantly pressuring me to take up extreme measures that lead to eating disorders because of my size. Really, unless you are my doctor and you know my lifestyle and habits, you shouldnt be commenting on someone elses weight or what they eat. Its not your place. And i think its toxic to expect everyone to sustainably be able to be thin. Thinness does not equal health, and sometimes people cannot sustain a weight that someone else can. Yes, if we all starved, we could be thin, but that isnt sustainable. And i ask people to understand weight loss is a lot harder than it looks. It takes both mental and physical effort. It can consume your mind until its all you think about. I want everyone to be healthy, find food that is nutritious and satisfying. Find movement that makes them feel happy and do it often as possible. But that does not mean its ever ok to bully people because of how they look.

Because they think "fat at any size" and that you can eat anything while still being healthy
The thing I'm fond of about Dr. Mike's advocacy isn't the message itself but how empathetic he is delivering the message. He knows from the patients he's had the struggles of diets and whatnot which made him very sympathetic towards people who struggle with the mental part of weight loss for obese people (which is the biggst hurdle really; since dieting is the only real thing you'll need for weight loss unless say you got a couple pounds of sagging skin where physical activity will be welcome)
He even sympathizes well enough for those who pretty much get harsh words from others' doctors
@@ArnoldFrost Yeah. He really feels for the people who just can’t control themselves at all. Thank God were empathetic toward that weak and pathetic mindset and approach it with more weakness.

I am overweight and recently motivated to do something about it. It can be a difficult subject if you aren't in a place to hear or talk about the issue. That doesn't make the person discussing it fatphobic. I appreciate Dr. Mike and his open and honest conversation on all topics. I wish more doctors practiced medicine like him.
Dr Mike talks sense and the truth, from a medical and logical perspective. Some people don’t like hearing the truth! BMI is a dangerous measurement tool but is sadly quoted all to often.
There's a difference between:
-you are less worthy because you're overweight
-being extremely overweight isn't healthy
And people seem to forget that
That step to self worth comes from them, not the doctor. They've seen the pattern so often they get easily triggered. Mike's exactly right that they come from a place of pain.

Sums it up
Sadly enough, people who feel victims of their own lives, of their own conducts; tend to project their responsibility.
A lot of the “fatphobic” BS comes from thinking that there’s literally *nothing* wrong with being overweight or obese, so anyone telling them to lose weight is “fatphobic.” It seems to be a willful ignorance of the massive amounts of evidence supporting having a relatively “normal” weight for good long-term health.
Following this logic, doctors are also apparently cholesterol-phobic, cancer-phobic, and smoking-phobic.
For real, what the hell? Because Dr. Mike mentioned obesity and watching what you eat, it's is some sort of fatphobic propaganda? He's a doctor! Of course he's going to mention these things. I really don't understand people sometimes.

Dr. Mike, this may be an old video, but it's my first time seeing it. I used to weigh over 400 lbs. Im now down to just over 200 lbs. I have personally dealt with fat phobic people, and I've also had to come to terms with the dangers of being so big. You're an amazing educator, and I have never once seen anything that comes close to fat phobia or hate. Keep rocking, brother.
Dude I love my doctors and I’m happy you exist, and that’s because I love learning more about diseases and stuff about our bodies
Why do some people act like having a high amount of fat isn't a detriment to your health? He just wants people to be healthy.
Because of political correctness. I am fat, I don't like it, but I do not mind if someone points it out. If there is someone who says that fat is healthy....get your facts in order. I don't sleep well, I can not move well, i get tired very quickly and I am "just" 10-12 kg overweight. In some more years doctors won't be allowed to tell you that you have cancer, because it will hurt your feelings.
Consultanta Danemarca not just being pc but because of the fat-shaming that can come with it, even from doctors
It's because some people only achieve body positivity through denial. That is the #1 reason right there. A lot of fat people are completely aware of the very real health risks that come with being over weight and for some of them that makes it really hard not go through life hating that extra weight. Some fat people want so badly to feel good about their bodies that they strive for body positivity in the most mentally (and physically) unhealthy way possible, which is denial. This denial is a process that usually starts by looking for other fat people who have already achieved some level of body positivity. They observe these people and weed out the ones that take the "body positive while working to be healthier" approach because having to address the health aspect gets in the way of the goal. They then start focusing on fellow fat people who adamantly insist that they are perfectly healthy and who tend to cite bogus medical articles as their justification. Body positivity without denial DOES exist but only when people have psychologically healthy reasons behind it. People who just want to be told that they aren't actually unhealthy so that they can feel good about what they see in the mirror are the people who throw around "fatphobic" and insist that anybody who claims to care about their health is a liar who just hates fat people. Their friends and family can have been expressing concern for their health for years but as soon as they achieve unhealthy "body positivity" through denial they suddenly accuse those friends and family of just hating fat people. It's a really big problem that's becoming more and more common as more and more false information is spread. It's very unfortunate that this problem has also started to fuel the misconception that all fat people are in denial and just don't care about their health when that's not true at all.
My friend has already had a heart attack, but I'm scared to tell him to eat better because he'll think I'm judging him. I live in obese state so I'm actually seen as pretentious for caring about my own health in the first place.
@@consultantadanemarca2132 that has nothing to do with political correctness. they just are feeling shitty about their size in society and the body positive movement is an excuse to give up and not try anymore and since it has gotten so much popularity they stay reinforced with their believes. no political supports obesity. this isn't political. just idiots who don't want to admit they need help or feel like it won't change how other people see them.
I'm an overweight girl because I am twelve years old but I weigh 188 pounds, right now I'm trying to eat less but it turns out that for the most part I'm overweight because i have mental health issues, and I'm sad about it because it is like REALLY HARD TO LOSE WEIGHT!!! Probly Not: I don’t think calling people morons is gonna help the situation. They’re not a moron, they’re emotional, being emotional means you make mistakes, but making mistakes doesn’t make you a moron.
makes them fat-centric rather. Anything said that mentions the unhealthiness of being overweight is wholly discarded, even if it's from dozens of renowned physicians, doctors, nutritionists, etc.
Anything said that says being overweight is fine and healthy is instantly accepted, even if it's from the random homeless person around the corner.
And then they use the random person's quotes to negate the doctors' research, since those two have obviously equal value as truth. (sarcasm)
Vanesa: Right I agree with you, but pointing that out, isn’t something that will lessen the tension surrounding the issue, in fact, it’ll probably amplify it. I like Dr.Mike’s approach, he understands that where these people are coming from is a place of pain, and yet he acknowledges the fact that what they themselves are doing, is only causing more pain.
Just insecure
There are a lot of people who have trauma around their weight and especially so in the context of attempting to seek help for it. I have been shamed and dismissed by many doctors when attempting to address my own weight. I don't condone the post this person made, but I get the feeling they have been shamed and probably not helped by the medical community. Sometimes, there is a disconnect between the emotional impact of this trauma when a doctor says "eat right" or whatever. For some people they've tried it all to no avail and I think there could be some benefit from doctors having more sensitivity training around this topic when addressing patients directly, and utilizing more comprehensive programs that address emotional impacts and trauma that affect someone's weight loss journey...the medical approach isn't always enough. One specific treatment or diet won't work for everyone, and it's not always someones fault if they can't lose weight. I do think doctors can be fixated on that last one...it must not work because you didn't do it right mentality. Maybe it didn't work because their weight loss journey requires something that wasn't previously considered. That being said I love Dr. Mike and I'm sure receiving that post was heart breaking on a certain level.
That is still their problem. They don't get to accost a doctor for that who is genuinely doing their job.

Are you really justifying condescension on the doctors' part? I guess when patients experience forced hospitalization and physical restraint, and develop serious trauma from it, it's also the patients' fault then

The one that picked my interest more is the comment about doctors mentioning your weight on a medical checkout. I mean what do you expect! it's not like a doctor approached you on the street to say you're fat, you came to the doctor to ask what is wrong with you AND YOU PAID FOR IT!. It's like going to a restaurant, paying for the meal and then the restaurant ghosts you and never give you your meal, it would be stealing if the doctor didn't say what your health issues are.

@John Tremblay the annoying thing these days is that the person making that comment isn't even certain to be overweight.
PC culture and SJWs have this tendency to white knight "minority" groups because it makes them feel better about themselves, not because it's a subject that affects them and they feel they need to speak out, no, it's because they want attention and that's the way they found they can get it.
Case in point, Doctor Mike felt he had to make a video about these allegations giving that shmuck the attention they were looking for.
Lol
Dr. Mike: **says eating healthy is good for you and you should be healthy**

These body positivity and fat acceptance people it seems like they have zero brain cells
Smh, how could that man give me a healthy diet tip so that I may be able to live a longer and healthy live? _The nerve, I tell you. The nerve!_
That’s eat shaming
Actually most people who are anti-fatphobia don't mind healthy eating or being told they should be healthy, it is when weight gets put into the picture that it gets muddy
It's because the people crying "fatphobia" are the ones that only want to hear: "It's okay to eat whatever you want and get as big as you want." It's not about facts, it's about feelings - like most of the garbage going on in the world today. Personally I'm overweight but I've been working on it. My doctor advised me to lose weight and my blood pressure sure showed it was getting worse and -SHOCKER- has gotten way better now that I'm down to a more reasonable weight. I didn't lash out because he pointed out I had been lazy as hell and not working out at all. But people don't care about anything other than feelings these days. "Tell me I'm PERFECT no matter what or you are against me!" I believe people can be whatever they want to be, eat as much as they want, etc. But don't get all offended if what you are doing is hurting your body and someone wants what is best for you.
Dr. Mike, you've been one of the best resources for this kind of information and at no point have I ever gotten anything from your videos other than you really care about your patients and us as well.
I was fat growing up and am still losing weight but I know the struggles that comes from trying to lose weight, these people decide to not challenge themselves and decide to blame the world for trying to help them, for anybody not fully convinced just try reducing your calorie intake , it’s hard at first but eventually you will easily be dropping weight and you will feel better, you will be more confident, and you will perform better at your job your everyday life and practically anything else, trust me give it a shot there’s no better feeling than stepping on that scale and seeing it drop
I love the idea of someone actually being fatphobic, as in they see a fat person and they run for their life

"Only one doctor hasn't mentioned losing weight to me"...
At this point they're just plain ignorant. If EVERY doctor is telling you this, then CLEARLY it's a sign.
I don't see Dr. Mike being fatphobic. I will say I have been to doctors that completely disregard the reason I came to the doctor's office only to hammer on about weight. Saw one about a ringworm infection and he just went on about weight this and that, when I had no prior relationship with him and I had not had any major changes since last time I was at a doctor, so it felt unwarranted. For years I avoided the doctor because I knew the conversation would turn into what I perceived as shame and not care. My current doctor is great! She talked to me about risks, tested me for common issues, pointed me to some programs, had me talk to a sleep Dr. and a nutritionist and voila I'm down ~100 lbs and have kept it off for about a year now. This conversation needs to happen, but trust should first be established. I'm still on a weight loss journey, but weight is only a passing mention in doctor consultations...

I feel like there is a point in this that wasn‘t quite clear enough:
He doesn‘t want you to lose weight because you‘re fat. He wants you to lose weight because the risks for certain health problems are so much higher if you‘re obese. Yes, you can be obese and live a healthy lifestyle, you can exercise, eat well, take good care of your body. But being at a healthy weight (not „skinny“, healthy.) still lowers certain health risks.
Exactly thank you ♥️♥️

Yes! And also you can be fat (according to your own standards, like not as skinny as you wish to be or whatever fat means for each indivudual), and doctors actually consider you to fall within a healthy weight. They would never tell you to lose weight in these kinds of situations.
Fatphobe here, I was 605 at my heaviest and couldn't walk long distances without breathing heavily, heck I couldn't even stand for minutes at a time. I couldn't sleep without waking up several times a night gasping for air. I would become sick with severe gallstones from all of the greasy foods I would eat, on the floor reeling in pain and vomiting. I said I had enough and cut out all of the bread and added sugar from my diet and focused on only eating proteins/veggies/fruit and weight fell off of my body with the quickness. Currently at 288 nearing my goal, I didn't have to workout constantly to get this low, just cut out all of the junk food and sweets.
Now I can sleep all throughout the night without waking constantly and I can walk long distances again and make flights of stairs look like a joke. I have never felt this great in my entire teenage and adult life.
