Like two weeks ago Eric O had a Chevy with an E85 problem and wouldn't it know I got Chevy with a MIL checked the codes and there was a code for rich fuel mix did all the standard test came down to me cleaning the intake and the MAF reset the fuel trim and still the fuel trim read rich mix them remembered the Eric O video with the flex fuel truck so I checked the service data said nothing about the car being flex fuel checked the owners manual and found that car was flex fuel compatible checked the alcohol content from the scanner and read 48% and I knew the ower only used 87octain so physically checked the alcohol content and nowhere near 40% let alone 48%. Because I remembered that video fixed that car so if it wasn't for videos like this I'd be stumped on some repairs. thank you all

Great job, Dan !! The most important thing here is there is no fault code, and that happens because the info from the NTC temp sensor is in the normal range of it. The ECU doesn't know whether the engine temp is about 90 degrees or not, but 90 degrees is plausible for it. This issue is what about a lot of technicians get confused and they're not able to give a solve to this kind of problems. Love your channel !!
Other shops fine example of throwing parts at what should be common fault checks. Great video Dan, you might want to forward this video to the other techs. You might think not, but remember.....what could be wrong with a correct procedure to make a better income. I am a mobile mechanic, on the road repairs.....and hear this expensive story with owners about how techs NOT KNOWING HOW TO DIAGNOSE was an expense to the owner. Effective diagnostics and presentations like you make this industry better. Thank you for the excellent video and information you provide.

I have a mate, whos a mechanic, the diagnosis said the water pump was not working,, it turned out, it was the sensor which was not working correctly.

Great video Dan, for the people that don't have a fancy little black box and the gauge is stuck high, just unplug the sensor and observe the gauge/scan tool pid if its still high take a test light and LIGHTLY touch the terminals on the connector and watch gauge/scan tool to drop in temp or volts reading. If its stuck low do the same test, only connect test light to positive batt terminal. This will check and confirm wiring integrity. Merry Christmas

I'm not sure if this applies now where you are, but a lot of American systems will use a default value, typically -40 deg F, for the temp if the sensor is unplugged or fails open. This would be a quick test with your conditions . I just found your channel and I am impressed with your techniques to find the problem and fix it, not just start throwing parts till you hit the target. We have a lot of so called techs that think they can hook up a scan tool and it will show them how fix a problem. I found out many years ago you have to think the problem through to weed out all the false indicators, a lot of times having to think outside the box. Thanks.
Due to a bad temp sensor that car was in a permanent closed loop condition which lead to a lean fuel mixture resulting in a long crank with cold engine. That Decadebox from Ditex is very useful not only for the automotive industry but for many other applications in the electronics field, Thank you Danny!
During the 80's, U.S. cars usually had a separate sensor for the gauge, another one that talked to the computer and yet another sensor that controlled the cooling fans. Later on, they were all combined and one sensor talked to the computer and that info was sent to the dash gauge for visual indication. The same info was used to set fuel flow and to also decide when to turn the cooling fans on.

That was a good and quick diagnostics Dan , but the problem with many people is they don't have much theorical knowledge of Automotive technology how sensors work , for example the principle of that sensor NTC type sensor not many technicians knows how it works and what it does for the engine ECU. well done mate .
SAME SCENARIO HERE with the IAT sensor, for a Nissan Sentra 2007. NO start condition. With my Resistance Substitution Box, it's confirmed fix for a $299 sensor replacement. DD is a very good YTube mentor.
I usually check these with a test light. Although not as precise as a decade box, you can still verify integrity of the wiring and that the ecm can see a change. This is a good example of why verifying customer complaint is critical. Good fix Dan👍🏻

Plumber told me my boiler was scrap as it would not start and keep running, that turned out to be a thermister as well, cost me £3 so same as a car it pays to check the simple things first, as you do Dan, Well done.

Amazing this video was posted in my feed today. Had a similar but reversed problem. Engine is cold, temp sensor was reading correctly. But injection time under cranking was over 36ms. Extended cranking would bring down to 22ms with the engine almost starting. Adding a resistance substitute wheel to the cts connector and bringing the measured temperature to 94c the inj pulse dropped to around 10ms allowing the engine to start and run. Further testing showed the pullup resistor in the ecm was faulty.
Hi Dan... really enjoy Your videos... and the way You work in a methodical way! I had (nearly) the same fault on my Opel Astra H from 2005... BUT there's no temperature gauge in the dash... just a warning lamp when the temperature gets to high. So I had to dig a little deeper, and used my scan tool and reviewed all the data, and quickly stumbled over the temperature sensor reading almost 80°C... when the engine was cold! It just goes to show that You MUST use alle the available scan data in a smart way and not just look for error codes... cause there were none in my car too. Love the way You teach us to work smart - not hard, and hope a lot of "skilled" mechanics learn from You... it will save the customers a lot of money!

Great diag Dan! Amazing how simple things like this are overlooked. I had a Toyota that had an intermittent stall some years back. Parts were thrown at it left and right by 2 shops. It came to us and the customer warned us that it was very intermittent and random. It took us a while to actually get it to act up, but when it did we caught the coolant temp dropping to -40 and then verified our sensor was at fault. No codes in that vehicle either, which made direction more difficult like yours. At least you had the gauge showing incorrect readings. Great catch & great work on your videos.
Great video. I always keep a Decade Box and a couple of multimeters ready to work. The value of understanding Ohm's law and interpreting the data you get from a multimeter.
Great video DiagnoseDan as always. The only thing that I can add is that you need to know the type of thermistor you are working with. An NTC has less resistance as it warms while a PTC has more resistance as it warms.
What winds me up is this; the customer probably had to pay for all those 'extra' parts and labour, even tho the other shop couldn't figure out what was going on. Awesome Diagnostics Dan. Really enjoyed this!
oh man that was an easy one, temp gauge almost made it idiot proof ! I made my own in early days with rotary switches and resistors and variable resistors. Just some plain old resistors harvested from dead electronics good way get going for zero investment ... Merry Christmas big Dan 🎅 and Family 🎄
My 2004 Vectra C had trouble starting but it was the opposite. It never got up to operating temperature so the ECU was constantly dumping extra fuel in the cylinders because it thought the engine was cold so the spark plugs were sooting up because it was always running rich. A new thermostat and a clean of the spark plugs fixed the problem. Being the Z18XE engine, the coolant temperature sender was included with the thermostat. As a DIYer, I would've earthed the sender wire to verify that the gauge was working.

On older cars there can be two coolant temperature sensors, one for the instrument cluster and one for the ECU. Thank you for a great video.

Soon as you cranked that engine I immediately shouted coolant temp sensor at my screen 😅 fitted many at roadside to vauxhall/Opel's.

Now previous shop will replace all temperatures sensors on hard to start symptoms. Lol

Great diag Dan! Amazing how simple things like this are overlooked. I had a Toyota that had an intermittent stall some years back. Parts were thrown at it left and right by 2 shops. It came to us and the customer warned us that it was very intermittent and random. It took us a while to actually get it to act up, but when it did we caught the coolant temp dropping to -40 and then verified our sensor was at fault. No codes in that vehicle either, which made direction more difficult like yours. At least you had the gauge showing incorrect readings. Great catch & great work on your videos.

Great video. I always keep a Decade Box and a couple of multimeters ready to work. The value of understanding Ohm's law and interpreting the data you get from a multimeter.

Great video DiagnoseDan as always. The only thing that I can add is that you need to know the type of thermistor you are working with. An NTC has less resistance as it warms while a PTC has more resistance as it warms.
A coolant temperature sensor is (almost) always a NTC thermistor.

I made my own in early days with rotary switches and resistors and variable resistors.
Just some plain old resistors harvested from dead electronics good way get going for zero investment ...

My 2004 Vectra C had trouble starting but it was the opposite. It never got up to operating temperature so the ECU was constantly dumping extra fuel in the cylinders because it thought the engine was cold so the spark plugs were sooting up because it was always running rich. A new thermostat and a clean of the spark plugs fixed the problem. Being the Z18XE engine, the coolant temperature sender was included with the thermostat. As a DIYer, I would've earthed the sender wire to verify that the gauge was working.
