I'm from Northern California where a lot of this work is done! I worked for a company that manufactured equipment that is part of the almond harvesting process. Its so cool to see stuff I designed as I drive through the area. Great video!
I used to haul almonds from field to plant to blue Dimond. Glad I'm not doing that anymore. Those 15+ nonstop (and I mean nonstop) hour days. Finally got my hearing back.
I used to drive a truck with double trailers in the almond orchard, during the September harvest, in California. Same as they show at the beginning of the video, in the processing plant. 24/7 operation, very dusty. Almonds are also expensive because newly planted trees take seven years to grow before the first crop. The most interesting part of the harvest is when they dislodge the nuts from the tree - a low tractor with two long arms grabs the trunk and shakes it violently, knocking the husks free. Farmers tell the same joke - the "L" in almond is silent because they shook the "ell" out of them.
I lived about three years on an almond ranch when I was a teenager ... help with harvest and the little processor the owner had ... maybe 25 foot tall trees would bloom in the spring, grow fruit until ready ... we used rubber mallets to bang on the tree limbs to knock the nuts off ... and then ran a machine that just scooped them up off the ground ... thus all the debris shown in the video ... the correct pronunciation when the nut is still on the tree is /al-mund/, with the L sound ... after it's on the ground, processed and on your table, it's pronounced /ah-mund/, without the L sound ... the rubber mallet mentioned above knocks the L out of them ...
If I understood correctly.... they spin the crap out of the whole almonds, the friction separates the shells from the almonds and the spinning barrels have perforations in it, so the almonds can escape, but not the shells... then a computer, a camera and shots of air get rid off the small shells that made it with the almonds, among other stuff...
I realize it's a joke, but to make any kind of nut milk all you do is blend the nut with water and filter the liquid from the solids. It's actually pretty easy to make at home, all you need is a cloth bag made for the job, and a blender.
If almonds are pick by machines then whos going to pick the machine to pick the almonds. I know its crazy but I'm still trying to figure out if my barber cuts my hair then whos cut his hair. Lmfao
Imagine how much cheaper almonds would be if people just ate imperfect looking almonds, instead of having a 23 step process of robots for sorting almonds...
Just Compared the price with here in India, and there's barely any difference in both the imported Californian Almonds with similar robotic process or hand-filtered Indian packed.
Did you see how many times they were processed and a piece of glass still made it through. Why sell imperfect one when you can make butter and chocolate bars and milk where it not needed.
The whole thing did make me realize that this idea of a picky eater is just a extreme of the already picky standards we unknowingly follow. I grew up on heirloom tomatos so I was used to cutting off pits & scabs but the amount of superficial standards is infurating good thing.hopefully most of the ones that don't make it are put into other items.
I’ve seen some of the equipment at Central Valley processors but it’s great to see the whole process. Really labor intensive even with robots and computers. I don’t know why they made that lady toss the reject almonds up when it’s far easier to give her a drop chute just inches away from the conveyor belt.
The sorting machine with camera technology sending information to a robotic machine that picks up the almonds is incredible - whoever invented that and manufactures the machine is very clever and I suppose rich.

Some of this sorting technology is just... *nuts*
That's very punny. Not.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a tree somewhere in this process? I mean this is how they're processed, not how they're made.
You new here?
Ya I get the concept of the show. I was just sort of hoping for a look into how they're grown and harvested.
