Lyrics:
Hit the message I can hear you calling
No one's going anywhere tonight
We conceived a modern generation
It was free but now we pay the price
We're the victims of our own creation
Chasing rainbows that are painted black or white
Watch the struggle of our own temptation
Instincts barely keeping us alive
Back to the rhythm that we all came from
Voices of Babylon, streets of London
Back to the people that we know so well
A space in time removed too soon to tell
OMG..I forgot this brilliant song...how wonderful to have found it again
Why did I not hear this masterpiece during the 80s? All I can say is WOW. RIP Tony and John.
Never got radio play time...didn't get popular enough for one reason or another...
What a waste. Just like Nik Kershaw- never got the airplay in the US.@@robertallen6710
I first heard this song in 1989 on Pirate Radio 100.3 based in Los Angeles. The station tended to play the obscure. Broadcasting ended in 1993. In those 4 short years I bought a lot of unheard of music that one only heard on Pirate.
You know what really sucks about getting old? Your rock n roll heroes start dying off. RIP Tony Lewis. Thanks for the music.
You couldn’t have said it better. It honestly does suck.
Well said and this guy's voice was one of the best ever. My favorite song by these guys as well. I love all their stuff :)
@@Bloomr09 great voice
Man I remember the first time I heard 'Voices Of Babylon'. I instantly set up my tape recorder and patiently waited to hear it on the radio again. Once I'd captured it I wore that tape deck out rewinding and playing it over and over. I wanted more! Then I heard, 'Your Love', and 'Closer To Me', so bought the 'Play Deep' album on vinyl. I've been a fan ever since.
@@djshotty omg, funny to think back when that's exactly what we had to do... Wait for it to be played again.
RIP Tony and John.... One of the most under rated bands of the time...
They were the best,,,best song writing ever... didn’t realize how good we had it with these fellas.. well I did, but most didn’t. They’ve always been my top 3 fav bands
Very underrated this is music. When they came on the radio u knew who it was Outfield they had it
What a songwriter John was.
Indeed, sir.
5 million views, 20 K plus thumbs up.... I wouldn't call that "underrated"....
Lead guitar / songwriter John Spink wrote this excellent and beautiful song that renders emotion and nostalgy at the same time.Tony Lewis'voice is the perfect complement.
"The Outfield" Undoubtedly, they really made a difference in the 80's Rock music.May God holds both of them in paradise.
Hi, from Panama.!
its about genetic manipulation you dolt
Saludos yo 🇵🇦
This whole album is a masterpiece.
I have recently re-discovered this song and find it very captivating. It's amazing how the lyrics are even more relevant today than when the song was released many, many years ago. This is a classic with a powerful message!
True,I said same thing....
how are the lyrics "even more relevant today"?
what do you mean by that?
Here with you on that brother and sisters! Forever grateful to have been apart of this journey together…
C'mon man....this is a great tune. How in the world did it not go top 10??
Didn't have a strong enough 'hook' in the verses or chorus...
@@robertallen6710 That and nobody knew what they were singing about.
This has always been my favorite Outfield hit. The instrumental mix draws you in and holds you.
Amen!
One of the greatest songs of the 80's
I absolutely love this song. Graduated high school in 89...what great music we had and what a good time to be alive.
I remember hearing this on the radio back in the eighties when I was a kid... God I miss those days...
One of the greatest songs of the entire 80s. I don’t care if if didn’t sell millions
One of the Greatest Bands of the 80-90's. Tony and John passed away way to soon
🙌
@@smokinjo7597😢 Eu não sabia disso.
I'm with ya on that one, also Your Love is a classic for them....
The cd longbox hype sticker advertised the song as a smash hit. I love this song and video. I couldn't stop playing it on the jukebox in a local pizza shop. Long live the Outfield. Tony's solo project is great too!
I introduced my father to this song twenty years ago. He loved it the first time he heard it. I burned it onto a CD with a bunch of others, and he played it in his car very frequently. I lost him about six years ago, and get very depressed. Listening to this song helps me to cope.
Hang in there bro lost my dad too. Those we love may be gone but are never forgotten.❤
I'm 65 and still listen to their cd's ... 🙂
The music of the Outfield is timeless. This song was released 30 years ago, and it still sounds amazing.
Damn right on that, it does!
Can't beat proper music, better than the garbage that is aired today!!!
true my friend. this is a masterpiece.
youre a boomer
Jesus, it's been that long, hasn't it?
Thank God for The Outfield. They had real musical talent. God bless them.
I thank them everyday
Amen brother
Yep took them for granted as a kid 80s had the best music 🥰
And they kept their language clean, their videoclips elegant in a time when that wasn't hip
I'm a brazilian The Outdfield's fan since 1987.
Great band, great songs and great musicians.
I loved this song. I never felt they played it on the radio enough.
Nothing will EVER beat the music of the 80’s.

Except standing in front of the bedroom mirror singing these tunes💯😎
Sure miss those days🎶❤

Listening here in 2024 and this still sounds great. Yeah, I'm from that era, but c'mon, good music is good music and catchy is still catchy.
Masterwork. One of the best all times tunes
Hi I recommend an indiesong Called 'The bond villain' by Robert Nix
WOW!!!!!!!! The best music. The 80's kills it for music. PLEASE TAKE ME BACK!!!!!
I love this song. When I was 14 I had the tape single. Thanks for allowing me to relive a better time in my life this morning
Lelia I was also 14 and this was the last album I bought on vinyl!! I thought I just HAD to have been their biggest fan!! Takes me back every time I hear them.
I don’t know why but you shine to me just by the way you wrote.
Hang on …you are not alone. 😊
I was 15, then I listen to the cassette in a music store, I bought It without hesitation.

Took the words out of my mouth, my friend well said.
Happy to see so many Outfield fans out there that loved them as much as i do.One of my favorite bands of all time.
I just found out today Tony Lewis passed away. This is one of my all time favorite songs. It's hypnotic. I appreciated this band so much. I'll miss them but I'll always feel grateful for how good their music made me feel. So long guys. Thanks for everything.
I agree and one of my favorite bands all time. Loved their sound!
Everytime i listen to this one....its like bringing me back to the time of Kings in the Old Testament
It is hypotonic. Just a beautiful song.
Hypnotic
2023 and it still Rocks the Album too as well
These guys will forever be one of the best sounds of the 80s.
Just a Shame John and Tony passed away, way too soon.
Godspeed both of you and Thanks for the Great Music
This song goes straight through my skin and into my soul. 80s never die ❤
Me pasa lo mismo....
Same! Something special we’ll never see again ❤️
This song brings back so many wonderful memories. It came out the same year I married my wonderful wife. 33 years later still together and still love this song.
Same here! Congrats! Just had our first Grandchild on our 33rd Wedding Anniversary in March!
Nearly 2024 and this song just gets better and better.
Godspeed John and Tony back to the Rythm now 🙏
The Outfield was such a great band. I wish that they were still around, and making awesome music like this.
I agree! RIP Tony Lewis! You will be greatly missed and your music will live forever with this amazing band.
Hopefully they will release the album he was working on that was supposed to come out spring 2021.
They can always live on in our hearts and on our Spotify account
There gone
hey listen this kind of music will never duplicated!
My favorite The Oufield song
Voices of Babylon was always a song for me to fly low in my 89 Iroc convertible. 120 MPH with motor screaming and wind blowing through my hair. Living on the edge. I haven`t thought about these guys in years. I remember the faster I went the slower it seemed I was going. I will remember
them as a part of my youth as I fade away into my own sunset. You will be missed. This was music.
The best times! And we didn't even know it❤😢😢
Wrong my boy ! This IS Still Music for now and Beyond!!
What a classic car and memory
The Outfield are no more, but the awesome music they made will always be with us.
And we lost Tony in 2020
The comment … so haunting 😔
It's hard to believe 2 of the 3 members have died.
I can't believe the main two members have passed , they made great music ! ! RIP
@?Ruler ? So so true
I LOVED this song when it came out as the 80s were coming to an end.... it started to chart then just disappeared from airplay. I didn't think about it for YEARS except to think that "Your Love" was overplayed and wishing that the radio stations would play some of the other Outfield songs. I'd honestly forgotten the song's name (never had bought an album) and finally decided to search their discography to find what I'd mentally misplaced. So gratified to hear it again. And it sounds as good as ever.
No, there will never be a decade like the 80s again. Some folks went on to like 90s and grunge and such. Me, not so much. I became an adult in the 80s and the music of the time brings back the memories like it hasn't been over a third of a century 😮
I never knew this song back then! Love it! What a voice. The music is terrific.
Voices of Babylon was such an underrated album. I hadn't heard cassette and played it till it broke. Wish I could download it.
Hi I recommend an indie song you might like called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
That unique voice of Lewis RIP remains forever !!
Back during a simpler time. A passion in the music that never dies. Real artists and real instruments. Nobody can beat the 80s. Nobody!
Was always privileged to grow up in the 80’s. Best era ever.
Yes amen the best decade!! Even better than the 60s.
I want the 80s back forever.
God bless your soul John Spinks (1953-2014). You left us way too soon, and far too young. You are deeply missed.
Rest in Peace, Mr.Tony Lewis lead singer of The Outfield, died October 20, 2020.

I just found out right now........God .........we're losing far too many stars just in the last 5 yrs. or so: Lord, Peart, Emerson, Lake, Wetton and now Tony and John.
Unf.....ingbelievable.
Yes, very sad news. I had a crush on him in high school. This is my favorite song from them.
I just found out Tony Lewis died also .for some reason I was thinking about the outfield and read this on Wikipedia
Seriously underated band thats for sure
I can't believe I forgot this gem... I discovered and loved so many of The Outfield's songs back in the very early 00's when I was in my late teens/early 20's and in the military... I downloaded several of their songs because I always liked "Your Love" which received a lot of radio airplay back in the day, but it's been the better part of 2 decades since I've heard this song... still love it.
I have every album from day 1. This band kicked. We are so blessed to have their spirit live on with their music catalogue.
Such a great band and what a song - what a great era of music
These guys had so many hits, I still love them today! I miss the 80's so much! : (
Damn....Call me crazy, But The 80s is The Best Musical Era Of All Time!!!!
not crazy , u are smart and cool .
This takes me back to the days I lost everything and starting over again. Try some CRAWLER, FRANK MARINO & MAHOGANY RUSH. 70 - 80s Enjoy. UA-cam has it here.
You're not crazy. You agree with me that the Eighties had the most diverse music in the history of modern popular music. I was born in the right time to enjoy this music scene in real time.
Used be in a cover band. We loved The outfield. We did a few of their songs. Most of the harmonies were tough but we mastered them before we put them out to the public...we were proud of our accomplishment,....😁
Voices Of Babylon Is A Great Outstanding Solid Rock Song And Fantastic Wonderful Masterpiece By The Outfield.

RIP Tony Lewis...another 80's icon gone too soon. Thanks for the music.

@@ratter531 thank you. I'm so very sorry for your loss as well! 💔
OMG, so sorry. You'll have good days and bad days. My husband of 33 years passed away May 28th 2020 - we had no idea he was sick but went to hospital because of some odd symptoms. Put directly into ICU, they thought Covid (wasn't) it was two kinds of cancer, he'd pretty much lost his voice about 5 days previous so had no way to tell me anything - I knew his innermost feelings but - I needed more! I feel I got cheated because I had to make decisions on my own that I shouldn't have had to make....Almost three years later and I still have odd crying spells, walking into his favorite hardware or grocery store - the # of hours we'd spent there - but so many memories "What do you mean they don't have tenderloin steak!" Funny what things you remember....
Paperwork never ends.....but I don't regret thoes days we'd spent together; the good and the bad; the learning curve and things you instinctively know without saying a word. You'll get through it but no lie, it's hard, gather friends around you and speak of him in kindness and let friends share their moments. Wishing you healing a and hard up, warmest regards for safe journey.

RIP Tony and John. Tony Lewis had one of the most beautiful & distinctive male voices EVER!
His voice here sounds a bit different compared to the previous songs Say It Ain't So, Your Love, Since You've Been Gone and Everytime You Cry. Not sure if it's the music or his voice starting to deepen

It dose that everytime i hear the first sound...
This song didn’t do well on the charts because it was so far ahead of its time.
I think it peaked at #25. Back when the charts were dominated with Madonna and other crap. This should have been HUGE!
@@SlyJinx Went to #2 on US Rock Chart and 25 on the overall chart.
It’s an awesome song.... just like a lot of Outfield songs...so so underrated
Should have done very well....great music, awesome vocals and catchy. It was probably due to the stupid DJ's not playing the deep cuts of artists. I'm amazed how moronic DJ's have never been able to expand their musical horizons and continue to this day to play and overplay the same stupid songs over and over again. I dropped SiriusXM and listened to alot of Hair Nation but those morons can't stop playing the same Motley Crue and Whitesnake songs ad nauseum.
