A small point about the USS Liberty. The israelis only stopped the attack when a Russian naval boat approached. The Russians radioed to ask if assistance was required but the offer was declined.
A bigger point about the USS Liberty attack. Many of the murdered American sailors were shot by Israeli pilot's as they cowered inside their lifeboats awaiting rescue from their American comrades. The Liberty had a huge American flag flying from its mast on the day of the attack. Recorded conversations in Hebrew, between the Israeli airforce base and the jets attacking the Liberty proved that the Israeli pilots knew that they were shooting at an American ship.
