There's actually a bug where if you put an anvil in a soul sand elevator, it still counts to the 'blocks fallen', meaning you can drop an anvil 2 blocks and it can kill someone. (note: they despawn after 30 seconds)

Because falling anvil is an entity, like sand and gravel and concrete powder, We can use a setup that launches the anvil to the 257th y coordinate and then drop it.

it shows what you can do and how creative you can get with dropping anvils
The reason ur stuff disappeared when you looked away for a millisecond was cause when you saw it, the timer passed the 5 minute threshold, but items can’t disappear when in view, so when you glanced away, it was out of view of all players so it despawned
this settles it for me; rek is officially my favorite comfort youtuber.

I had that same glitch happen to me when I fought the dragon on my Java survival world. The glitch where your stuff insta-despawns when you die. My entire god set, all my potions, etc gone. I’m honestly surprised it’s so inconsistent, especially for how devastating it is. Meaning if Mojang were to try and investigate by replicating, it just might not happen.

stuff despawns if you take more then 5 minutes to get back. since there was a player in the area the 5 minute clock never stopped. I do like the idea of a in game voice chat where you can hear players in range... I should look into that mod

Nether warts, golden carrot, fermented spider eye, and Glowstone dust(To double the effect)/Redstone dust(To increase the time)

Hey Rek, Parrot just broke this record a few weeks ago, you wanna get the record back? If you want to, then I have a idea for you. You just make a anvil launcher at the new build limit, and because anvils become entities when they are being launched, so you can technically drop an anvil higher than the build limit. The anvil design I recommend you to use is the same one you made to break Civ's helmet.
Use explosions to launch the anvil above build height so you can beat your record.
