i tried setting up ufw on my laptop but even with ssh allowed i can't connect to ssh. ssh only works with ufw disabled. why? on arch edit: seems kde's settings was allowing from 22 to anywhere instead of from anywhere to 22, manually setting it up fixed it
Configuring is VERY important, otherwise your could get locked out to the Internet! Also need ssh Enabled. You would have to go to the Servers Terminal to correct this!
Hi there. The problem I'm getting is (I'm running Kali Linux in a Virtual Machine): Once I configure the UFW and I run the command "ufw status" it says "port xx deny" but if I use the NMAP it says "port open". Do you know what could be? Thnak you!
If you're checking with Nmap locally then it may be using the loopback interface which has separate rules in UFW. You can change how UFW handles loopback connections in the /etc/ufw/before.rules file. If you're testing from another server, then you may want to try setting up UFW again to make sure everything's configured as you expect. If you're scanning over IPv6, make sure that IPV6=yes is included in /etc/default/ufw so that it handles IPv6 traffic as well.
All of this information is really nice but I'm having a real interesting problem no granite I'm just trying to figure out Lennox button when I open terminal and put something in and push enter it says enter password but it will not let me enter Anything push button to keys and nothing what the hell am I doing wrong
Hi, thank you for all the videos you make ! I do have an issue though, I have a contact form that sends messages to the gmail smtp server, but it doesn't work (but works on development and on PythonAnywhere). I would like to know how I could achieve the same thing on my Linode. I think this is related with the UFW, but I can't be 100% sure. Anyway, thank you for your help!
We block outbound SMTP ports by default for accounts created after November 5, 2019. If your account was created after that date, that may be why you're unable to send emails. Why everybody think that if you are using a firewall in Linux then you must be using it in your server and not in your desktop??!! Not everybody running a server at home or using a VPS or they have a linode server!!! Why people can't think that there are a lot of SIMPLE people like me who use Linux as their daily drive??!!
@@ofchaot Because they post videos where they assume that Linux and firewall means you are running a server. You might know that a Server environment is a lot different than a Desktop environment and those who are new to Linux and use it in desktops cannot relate. If you are making a video tutorial then you should name it in a way that the viewer can understand for whom the video is made so that their time would not be a waste. I think you would understand by now. 🙂
Typical Linux, each and every tutorial always starts out with something crazy simple that does not work when you reproduce it, each and every time. " Connection refused".
crisp and clear. Thanks Jay LaCroix
thank you so much for these videos. very practical, very informative.
Thank you so much, hopefully you make an updated 2021 compilation video for hardened security settings in linux
Just a heads up you still leaked your public ip in the video, i am kinda late seeing this video but still.
I am a beginner, this was valuable information.
Clearly explain. Thanks for the great explanation and sharing. Have a nice day ahead!
Thanks as always Jay! Awesome video.
Thank you! Linode customer for about 2 years now.
Thank You So Much You Made It So Easy And Clear 💓
when you allow ssh from your dynamic public ip, how can you prevent not being locked out from your own server?

Nice and clear. grettings :)
How can I configure ufw for just one specific interface?
Hi Jay,
Out of scope of this video, just wondering if could post series dedicated to DNS?

Is portmaster is the better firewall than firewalld and ufw/gufw
is it possible for you to make a tutorial about port forwarding with ufw ?
Thank you!
Thanks , it was very useful.
