Day 279: False Oaths - The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

- This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
Together, with Fr. Mike, we continue our examination of the second commandment. Fr. Mike emphasizes that an oath engages the Lord’s name, and the Lord is the Lord of truth. We, therefore, have a duty as Christians to respect God’s name in matters of truth. He also emphasizes that everything we say is either in conformity to truth or in opposition to truth. Today’s readings are paragraphs 2150-2155.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.

Come out of her, my people, who have fallen to the deceit of Constantine. Who know not my name and say they love me. I have made myself known. I have heard you and I am here.
There are many who are yours to be saved. I am he who knows all that you are. Come to me, here are they who are mine. Make haste to come, here are we. Give in to them who speak of me, they are yours. I am here for you. Know that all is for them, here are we.

According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory:
Eternal Father,
I offer You the most precious blood
of thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said
throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory,
for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal Church
,
for those in my own home,

Are you visiting there or do you live there?
I was born in 1954. When I attended Catholic school in the 1960s, the nuns told us to always bow our heads a little when we hear or say the holy Name of Jesus, anywhere and everywhere.
Same for me and JMJ on the top of every paper for Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
Thanks for sharing this!🌸
All doctrine unique to the Catholic church is unnecessary if Christ's sacrifice is complete.
If Christ's sacrifice was perfect and he took away all sin past, present, and future than...
Penance has no purpose.
Purgatory has no point.
Absolution is unnecessary.
Need I go on?
Yes, Christ's sacrifice on the cross is complete and Final. The Bible confirms this repeatedly.
Flee this Anti-church.
Trust In Christ Alone.
Trust in him alone like you would trust a parachute. You can add nothing to a parachute by flapping your arms. Just as you can add nothing to the perfect and finished sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for all of your sins. Do not cheapen the saviors work by adding mans tradition on to it.
Find a real church that does not withhold drinking from the cup from its lowly non-priest membership.❤

A false oath is forbidden because one calls upon God, who is truth itself, to be a witness to a lie.
Perjury is to make a promise under oath with the intention of not keeping it or to violate a promise made under oath. It is grave sin against God who is always faithful to His promises.
I have a family member who says “JC” all of the time. It bothers me so much. I have mentioned it on more than 1 occasion. I’m sending yesterday and today to him to prayerfully listen to. Prayers Of Reparation To The Holy Face Of Jesus” have given me deeper love and respect of our Lord’s name.
"OMG" is another phrase we use so often. This session is an eye opener
@@roystonfernandes8305 That phrase is defiantly used by many people. Lots of the people that use it are holy and in authority. My mother use to charge us kids a nickel for minor swears like shit etc. For the F- - -word it was 50cents, which was a lot of money back in the 50's & 60's. I only got 25cents an hour for baby sitting. My brothers were the main swearers. I do not remember the OMG used until I was an adult.
Yes, Jesus said to Sr. Marie de St. Pierre:
When you abuse my name, you abuse my face!
O Jesus by your name and your face, save us!
Our hope is in the virtue of your holy name.

I have relatives who do that also. I sent the video from yesterday to my youngest son and to one of my nieces, hoping they actually listened to it and will take it to heart. I have spoken to them about using our Lord's name frivolously before. So many people do this, and it bothers me more ever time I hear it.
During Mass we are not taught anymore to bow our heads when we say Jesus Christ. I just learned this posture recently and I’m 61.
Back in my day going to a Catholic school, we were always taught to bow our heads at the name of Jesus. We also wrote JMJ which was short for Jesus, Mary, and Joseph on top of every school assignment.
@dianefrank3688 As a lector, I always bow my head at the Holy Name of Jesus whenever it occurs in the reading that I'm proclaiming in church.
@@glenapereira3492 That is a good example for the rest of the congregation. I have not seen our lectors doing that.💛
Yes, I was never taught either but noticed last year a new priest do so. It's a shame these reverent actions are no longer taught.
Thank for my new understanding of False Oath...so good. God bless this group, and may you all be filled with many graces.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼, Prayer for Fr. Mike. Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Happy belated Feast Day of St. Faustina (October 5th), the Apostle of Mercy who received revelations from God about God's mercy!
What she was taught was already part of public revelation, but the Lord sometimes sends us prophets with a message to remind us what He already taught us because we sometimes forget and lose sight.

Day 279. 🙏❤🙏
Difficult but rewarding if we follow this. By saying either yes or no, we become clear in our intentions and we don't get confused. I was told by a teacher and a boss that we should never say "try" because that's like saying no or worse, that means we are confused about our situation and priorities. The thing about false oaths is amazing, especially when we consider Sir More's beautiful analogy of our oath or promises being like water in our hands. When we don't mean it or don't do what we said we would do, that water gets spilled. Consider it like our goodwill and name. If we are lying or if we don't do something because we don't want to do it, we will be spoiling our name and will be worse than those who took a stand and refused it. When we involve God's name in such matters, the thing is not only spoiling our name but also the image of those who follow God and Christ. We also commit a sin by doing this. The example of the King shows that it takes courage to avoid this sin. Thus, I pray that God helps us to avoid such situations and if we find ourselves in such tests, may He give us courage to do the right thing and may He protect us. Amen. I'm praying for you, Fr Mike, Team Ascension, and fellow listeners. Thank you so much! God bless!

Everyday in our atheistic and secular world - blasphemy everywhere 😢
🙏
We must avoid taking the Lord's name without meaning it, as it implies taking the Lord's Name in vain, or taking a false oath.
An oath engages the Lord's name, unless taken as a pledge of one's own truthfulness. Truth is "WHAT IS".
We cannot call upon God to witness to a lie as that is perjury. It's a grave lack 😪 of respect for the Lord of all speech. We should never allow our actions to be free of our intentions, as they stand against Truth itself - against Truth Himself!! This implies calling upon the Lord to witness to an action.😢
" Taking an oath ant not intending to follow through is a false oath." This is a violation of second commandment.

Fr Mike, what about those times when catholics went to war/ kill in the name of the Lord? Like when they shout "For God and country!" before plunging into battle. Would that be taking the Lord’s name in vain? Or could it be said that they are seeking the Lord’s protection?
"Truth is." That doesn't tell me much. In fact I would ask for confirmation in order to understand what is being proposed.
Instead a far more comprehensible definition would be;
Something is true if it corresponds to reality.
Like plumb?
He said that too.
1) Did you not hear 8:14, 8:15?
2) By what do atheists swear oaths validating their truthfulness?
@@TrixRN he was talking about statements being true to the degree that they conform to reality. There are no degrees of truth. Something is either true or not true. My use of something involves everything that could correspond to reality.
@@grmalinda6251 can you expand on that. I'm not sure what you mean.
Quick question. We swear on the Bible in court before giving testimony. What happens to the atheist who doesnt believe? They can say whatever they want?
Is saying, “oh, Lord” breaking this commandment?
"The Lord’s name is holy." For this reason man must not abuse it. He must keep it in mind in silent, loving adoration. He will not introduce it into his own speech except to bless, praise, and glorify it. - The Second Commandment, CCC 2143
Hopefully this helps!
Hi, I have a question for Catechism Answers: Is it less grave to say the name "God" casually since it's a generic name for a supreme being or deity and not a name that the One true God revealed of Himself (like Yahweh or Jesus). Like isn't "God" less personal and specific to say? I grew up very aware that taking Jesus' name in vain was a sin against the second commandment but not so much with saying "Oh my God". Thoughts?
I see your point, but He is still called God in the Bible, in church, and in our prayers. I personally want to err on the side of love and respect. God bless you!
Both bad but I was told saying Jesus in vain is a mortal sin and Oh my God is venial
If you're capitalizing God, as in your sentence example, instead of saying small g god, you are referring to God the Father and so trivializing the Father's name
@@StAlphonsusHasAPosse Yes, I see what you mean. I've always erred on the side of respect with regards to saying "God" casually too. At the same time, I always feel very shocked and offended when I hear people throw around Jesus' name casually but not so much with "God". (Obviously, my reactions are subjective though.) I've heard good Catholics (even a good preist) deminish or right off stuff like "omg", so I was just kind of curious about a deeper dive into that, what with "God" not being a personal, divinely revealed name.
@@kathleengruseck7849 Yeah, I thought about that too, and when I was writing out my comment, I didn't really know whether to capitalize the "g" in my example because when you hear people simply speak you obviously don't see if they're capitalizing or not.
2150-2155. I believe today's ellipsis is very evil and can be hypocritical of all of what is being said today. Who would snatch away the words of Jesus who is the Word incarnate? It is to take away part of Him. In the ellipsis today is, "But I say to you, take no oath at all, neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God, nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, nor by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair white or black." If taking an contrary oath to God only to be broken is a sin then snatching away the Word of God is also a sin because it leaves the audience a half-baked notion by hiding the truth and doesn't the audience deserve the truth; is not the truth what we mean to convey? Now we see that we not only should not take an oath contrary to God but by all that is God's as well. Let the truth be known. I rest my case.
Moving on to the gospel:
Only Jesus Christ lived a life worthy of Heaven. Substituting our sinful life for his is the only way to enter Heaven.
1.
We attempt to present our own righteousness to God the father on Judgment Day?
*(We don't have any righteousness. Answer the questions in the below, how many lies have you told in your life?)*
2.
Jesus has kindly offered to give us his righteousness as a free gift making us perfect and impeccable in the sight of his father. Ensuring a smooth transition on Judgement Day.
(Choose this option.)
How many lies have you told in your life?
Have you ever taken anything that didn't belong to you?
Have you ever used God's holy name to curse, would you do that with your mother's name?
How many times have you gazed with lustful intent at someone or entertained lustful desire towards them?

All Christians at the very least require GOOD WILL!
We don't force ourselves upon your denomination!
Do you have a mother? Do you love her?
Debates will never change hearts!

Response to your point #1...
You say we have no righteousness.
The Bible says "the prayers of a righteous man availeth much". James 5:16.
Should I believe YOU or the bible. ?????
In response to your second reply as to how many sins have I committed today ??????

The truth didn't change from yesterday, miss.
Sin is so much more serious than what this *Anti-Church* teaches.

John 12:47-48 ESV -
47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
Romans 3:10-18 ESV -
10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” 13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” 14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 in their paths are ruin and misery, 17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
