📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
What does it mean to bear the Christian name? The Catechism reminds us that in Baptism, we are given our Christian name, which is sacred. Our name represents the dignity of each of us and depicts how God loves us each uniquely. Fr. Mike explains that each time we make the Sign of the Cross, we call upon the Lord to bear witness to what we are about to do. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 2156-2167.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. This podcast is free and always will be. But, we have limited resources. With funding from generous supporters like you, we can do even more than simply create the podcast. When I wake up I make the sign of the cross and my prayer is Thank You Lord for this new day. Father God I offer this day to You. Amen
Thanks Fr Mike for reminding me to pray my morning offering everyday.
Hi Fr Mike. Even though I live in a faraway country from you, and have never met you in person, you are still my #1 favourite priest 😍😍

Day 280..! The Christian Name..! Oh my..! This could not have come at a better time..! As I was opening the internet to practice the Psalm for today’s Mass there was a post by a daughter on the phone with her mother telling mom that her cancer was nearly cured. It would have been such an uplifting post, except for the fact that the girl was ‘cursing’ the Lord, as she was telling her mom the news. I could only pray for her, as I heard the Lord say, ‘forgive her Father, she knows NOT what she is doing.’ Cursing becomes such a habit, some people just do it without thinking. I prayed for her at Mass this morning. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I CANNOT WAIT to hear you again..! I am praying for all of you, especially Fr. Mike and MY priest. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Please pray for me. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 God bless. ❤❤❤
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion have mercy on us and on the whole world. Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary pray for us sinners ✝️♥️🙏
Amen! ❤🙏
Good evening father Mike, thank you so much for your blessings to us every night. Thank you Ascencion for making all this possible.
❤Amen!!!🙏🙏🙏
*These words are not mine.* These are the words the Ruach HaKodesh (YAHUAH's Set-Apart Spirit) uttered through me when I prayed to YAHUAH; asking him what *he wants* me to say, knowing the truth. To they with ears:
"Know that YAHUAH is the name of the Most High and YAHUsha is the name of The Son.
Come out of her, my people, who have fallen to the deceit of Constantine. Who know not my name and say they love me. I have made myself known. I have heard you and I am here.
There are many who are yours to be saved. I am he who knows all that you are. Come to me, here are they who are mine. Make haste to come, here are we. Give in to them who speak of me, they are yours. I am here for you. Know that all is for them, here are we.
Give not to them that are against me. I am he who sees all you do. Come to me out of her, all are here for me. Do what I say. Out of her, come. All are here."

13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?

Woo Hoo! Day 280! I’m a bit behind but I am catching up! So happy to be here! Thank you Fr Mike!
When I wake up in the morning the first thing I like to pray is...Good morning dear Jesus, this day is for you. I give you all I think, say, and do. Then my husband and I pray together almost every morning to give God, praise, thanks and glory, to apologize for our sinfulness and ask for mercy to have a better day to walk in His ways, and pray for our prodical children who have left the Catholic Church.
Beautiful 🙏
My name is sacred ✝️. I’m praying for everyone of us in CIY, and Fr. Mike Schmitz 🛐

So so good, learning new things daily!! God bless you abundantly Fr Mike!!❤🤗🙏🙏🙏St Joseph pray for all of us
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You all my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day, for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, for the needs of my family and friends, and in particular for the intentions of the Hold Father. I wish to gain all the indulgences attached to the prayers I'll say and the good works I'll do this day. Amen. (From the "St Pio Prayer Book")
This so, so good! Thank you Fr. Mike. From yesterday I realized that when I was frustrated, facing difficulties, having a pity party for me, I realized I kept saying God, oh God. I have since replaced with Father. I don’t ever want to misuse, or abuse the Holy name of God.
Under the umbrella of the Second Commandment, we are not just called to respect the holiness of the Name of God. By the baptismal blessings, God calls each one of us by our Christian name. He loves us infinitely uniquely. You and I are called to bear witness to Him. The Sign of the Cross strengthens our act of adoration to Him.
Thank you Father
Thank you Father Mike. God bless 🌹
Thank you God! That you have named me and love me.
Thanks to Fr. Mike and all involved in this awesome ministry.🙏
We got that prayer in Spanish and I do it every morning too 🙏🩵🌹

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him, To all who call on Him in truth (without guile).”

I say the morning offering every day too but it's what I learned at school....Oh Jesus, through the most pure heart of Mary, I offer thee all my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of Our holy Father the Pope.🙏......
I will learns the one you say Fr Mike.
Thank you Fr Mike. Praying for you and everyone here have. God bless 🙏🏻 ❤️🙏
There are so many beautiful morning prayers. My morning prayer is on a Sacred Heart Magnet and is similar to Fr. Mike's.❤🙏
I learned and pray the Morning Offering. that Fr. MIke told us about, for many years now. However in the recent year or so I have changed it to: :and for the Pope's intentions, be they God's Will". Especially with they current Synod, I feel compelled to do that.
@@lizmcdavid1506Don’t worry. the Pope’s intention are published for the year so you can look it up. Our weekly parish newsletter always states the Pope’s intention for the week. It is always a wholesome intention and it is worthy of joining all the church to pray for it.
In Baptism, the Lord's name sanctifies we receive the name in church.
Each time we sign ourselves with the sign of the Cross we call upon God to bear witness to what we're about to do asking him to bless it.
I always sign myself on awakening and pray the Morning Offering just like Fr.Mike. i also add: "Good Morning sweet Jesus my Saviour, good morning dear Mary my queen, good morning bright angels fair sentinels of Jesus who dwells here, unseen."😊
A priest friend of mine taught my class this morning prayer: "Good morning dear Jesus, I give you today, my body ,my soul, my work and my play". I remember and say it daily.
Fr. Mike's morning offering is beautiful:
Oh my Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer to you all my prayers, works, sufferings, and joys of this day, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass said throughout the world, for all the intentions of your most Sacred Heart, for the conversion of sinners, reparation of sins, reunion of all Christians, and for the intentions of the Holy Father, our pope.

Sign of the cross. "Jesus, I offer you what I think, do, and say. Bless me and make me like You today." Sign of the cross. ( Learned from my children's Catholic school.)
I do pray the morning offering each day but my very first prayer of the day is (as soon as I wake up I sit on the edge of my bed and pray it) - the prayer is: Blessed are You, Lord God, King of the Universe. I thank You for allowing me to wake up and spend another day in Your beautiful creation. Then about 10 minutes later I’m praying the morning offering. 😊
Thank you so much for your blessings Father Mike

Please pray with me.
According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory:
Eternal Father,
I offer You the most precious blood
of thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said
throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory,
for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal Church,
for those in my own home,
and in my family. Amen.
In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20)
Father I need your grace again because I am not the witness I want to be.
Thank you
My birthday is 2:17 and I love it when that corresponds to a meaningful Bible verse, ex: 1John 2:17. Now this Revelation verse with your reflection really overwhelms me.
I start my morning offering with Father Kirby of The Good Catholic. I highly recommend. He gives a very short but meaningful talk after. God bless Father Mike and Father Kirby.
Me too! So of course I right away thought of him. 🙌💝

Ofrecimiento de obras: Señor ,te ofrezco mis pensamientos, palabras y obras del día de hoy.
I wish I could remember who the quote was from, but I heard Dr. Taylor Marshall mention it recently that when you make the Sign of the Cross in a public a drop of Grace falls on all those who saw it. I make The Sign a lot more now, because I've been thinking about "If you deny Me before men I will deny you before The Father."
❤
Amen 🙏.

This teaching on "The Christian Name" is especially meaningful to me. Every day I learn important new things by studying the Catechism with Fr. Mike. Many thanks. God bless the CIY community, one and all.
The most dramatic night of Jacob’s life took place on the River Jabbok. He feared the encounter he was about to have with his brother Esau. At some point during the night, someone grabbed Jacob around the neck and threw him to the ground. On and on through the night, they wrestled. Who was this stranger? Jacob would later say, “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared” (Genesis 32:30 NLT).
God let Jacob fight until it appeared that Jacob was in control. And then, with one touch, God dislocated his hip. Jacob fell to the ground, broken and humbled. The hip is the largest weight-bearing joint, and it engages some of the strongest muscles. Yet it was putty at the touch of the Stranger. The message of the dislocation? “You aren’t as strong as you think. Rely on me.” Is that a message for you?
❤🙏 So good, so good
So glad you mentioned the Morning Offering. I strongly encourage my EFF (elementary faith formation) students to learn & say that prayer before they even roll out of bed. Also I teach them the Sign of the Cross is a prayer unto itself & to reverently use it throughout their day.

On your way to the station, or happily
Going to second Mass on a summer Sunday-

Among your earthiest words the angels stray.

There are lotta morning prayers and little prayers online. I’ll do that I try to do the Angeles. It doesn’t always come on time because of the 6 o’clock morning prayer but sometimes I wake up early and I just do it and then I go back to sleep then I will pray to my angel or I will do a 14 minute prayer that is already pre-written or maybe I just pray in my own words there are many options I do a mixture of both timing is not perfect for me and the rosary I gotta work on.
Your Song of the Day: “They’ll Know We Are Christians”- by Peter Scholtes.🎶 ua-cam.com/video/LZg8Ho-lNqk/v-deo.html
I love this hymn. Very good choice for this Day280. 💙🙏🎵
We even sang this as Baptists. Love this song ❤️🎵❤️ I taught it to my kids when they were young.🙏❤️

Our daughter rejected her Christian name and gave herself a name that sounds Islamic although she has not embraced that religion. She remains agnostic. We, her parents, address her by her Christian name but her siblings address her by her name of choice. It has caused family dissension.
I’m so sorry.🙏❤️ My daughter uses a nickname of the name we gave her; all of her friends use the nickname, but I automatically call her by her birth name. She doesn’t mind though.
Along with 2157 The Christian begins his day, his prayers, and his activities with the Sign of the Cross: "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." The baptized person dedicates the day to the glory of God and calls on the Savior's grace which lets him act in the Spirit as a child of the Father. The sign of the cross strengthens us in temptations and difficulties.
It's also good to remember 1691 "Christian, recognize your dignity and, now that you share in God's own nature, do not return to your former base condition by sinning. Remember who is your head and of whose body you are a member. Never forget that you have been rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the light of the Kingdom of God."
Jesus always rebuked and corrected His disciples whenever they committed mistakes because He knew that they represent Him wherever Jesus is not present, and they will represent Him after He is gone. Thus, we represent Jesus Christ (Our Lord, teacher, friend, and Savior) through our name and work in the same way a student represents a teacher. If a student misbehaves or commits a crime, the media and the community say that the student has failed the teacher and the teacher could not teach that student well enough. We represent our family and a community through our last name and deeds. Thus, is it both a blessing and a responsibility to have our names. Getting a Christian name after Baptism is even a bigger responsibility. The power of the Sign of the Cross is true and comes from the fact that we will stop thinking about sin if we remember God and the teachings of Jesus. I personally think of the Fig tree scenario of Nathaniel. If Lord Jesus Christ could see Nathaniel pray below the Fig tree then of course, He can see us commit sins. God is everywhere and He is watching. Thus, we need to be fearful when sinning, and also confident because God is always with us and sees our good deeds, prayers, and thoughts. Thank you so much for this important analysis, Fr. Mike! I'm praying for you, Team Ascension and for the fellow listeners. God bless!! Glorify the Lord with your life!

I wasn’t given a special name. I was baptized as an adult and my name was used. I also saw that when my grandkids were baptized they used their names and my daughter when she was baptized as well. Now I’m wondering why.
I assume it might be that the names that were chosen was a name of a saint, a virtue, or a Christian related name????
If not, I imagine it was up to the priest, the parents and the godparents to determine otherwise ????
I heard Fr Mike mention something of this today
I see the name Violet in your UA-cam name . Maybe the color violet, which is purple has some significance in the form of penance. I personally just learned the meaning of my name as well recently, and it was quite interesting.
My name is Theresa, but I was Protestant until I was 57. I had no idea that several great saints had my name. I was baptized as a Protestant; I was confirmed as a Catholic, but chose St. Rita as my confirmation saint. I chose St. Rita because she’d been through so much in her life & because she’d live every vocation, daughter, wife, mother, nun.

The Apostle Paul freely admitted that he would never stop sinning.
Do not attempt to do what he could not. Instead, do what the Apostle Paul did, accept Christ's righteousness, It is offered to you.
Philippians 3:8-9 ESV -
8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith-
Romans 7:14-25 ESV - 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
Flee this Anti-church.
Trust In Christ Alone.
Trust in him alone like you would trust a parachute. You can add nothing to a parachute by flapping your arms. Just as you can add nothing to the perfect and finished sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for all of your sins. Do not cheapen the saviors work by adding mans tradition on to it.

Have you ever considered why there are so many other protestant churches in or near your town ? They all have different beliefs. Why is yours the right one ? Maybe another one is actually the right one. Have you ever taken this question up with them ?

I will not be held accountable for the doctrine or beliefs of this Anti-Church.
I will be accountable to God for my own reading of scripture not the belief of the church across the street.
God has given us all 24 hours in the day and the same book.
The statement "Parents, godparents, and the pastor are to see that he be given a Christian name." elicits the question "What is a Christian name"?
When Simon bar Jonah became Kephas/Peter, there was no precedence.
If we only use names of existing saints, then all other names, particularly in other languages and cultures would be forbidden.
Other than avoiding overtly un-Christian names, this statement makes no sense.
There are Saints in many cultures and languages
@@meihui7767I'm quite aware of that, however that's not my point!
Jesus. 335
Mary. 1
Mary was so important to the apostles when they were writing their letters to the New Testament churches that she was only mentioned once after Jesus had ascended to heaven. (Acts 1:14)
Jesus on the other hand was named 335 times. Mary was clearly unimportant to the early apostles. She has no role in salvation. She was an honorable young woman from Nazareth. She obeyed God.

The Apostle Paul freely admitted that he would never stop sinning.
Do not attempt to do what he could not. Instead, do what the Apostle Paul did, accept Christ's righteousness, It is offered to you.

I wouldn't waste my time, TrueOnyxRose. He just cuts n pastes the same passages over and over. On which he has been refuted over and over! Robotic and mindless. Incapable of understanding anything. He "drinks" some kinda "pasteurized grape juice"!! I kid you not! His own words. And because he "drinks"? Heh. He thinks he is following the gospel! He gets nothing you can tell him!
Thank you Father!
Amen
