- Earlier this year CHVRCHES’ lead singer Lauren Mayberry and actor Justin Long visited the Girls Home in Granada, Nicaragua. Seeing the difficulties others face in this world is rather eye-opening but when we come together as people to help others these experiences can be very heartwarming.

Why is it that 'charities' usually split up families and pick which gender they will help? Families as a whole need services and resources to keep the family together and and help them fix the bigger issues that span across the family relationships, not just fix one person's individual problems. There is still a broken dynamic in most families in poverty. Part of it is an artifact intrinsic to the poverty itself. Not having enough to care for your family is frustrating as heck and causes natural compensatory behaviours that are maladapive but can be mitigated with training and counseling. Part of it is an artifact of lack of education. If they help the girls and not the boys, and split the girls from their fathers and other male relatives and male role models, when the girls age out, the girl's are going to grow up seeking a partner as all will, but for them, all the availible young men will be corrupted by lack of education, abuse, and neglect. This could have been mitigated by including the boys in this program and including their families as well rather than picking one gender to place a value on. That's our society though. It is reverse sexism and people think it is doing good.
