The SECRET Snowboard Ratio NOONE Talks About…
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- In this video I explain how difference in snowboard width/length, and boot size/model in combination with binding setup will ultimately dictate how low you are able to carve and how much toe/heel drag you will have. For my this is the difference between enjoying snowboarding and being able to carve or being able to jib in the park. It’s a tough life for big footed gentleman and I hope this video can help some of you out with a similar issue! Yewww!! - C Dub 03/02/23 #1254 #cvlogs

TOBY TRANTER - High Noon
I’m an intermediate rider in my mid-40s and admittedly, I am proud of my carving.
-Centering the binding (equal heel & toe over hang) is crucial.
-Squaring the high back to the heel side edge helps.
-Increasing the binding’s forward lean is vital; keep adding more until you’ve gone too far, then back it up-I didn’t know what I liked until I went past the point. Important note: remember to remove almost all the forward lean if you’re headed back into the park; you want that forgiving movement to help landings.
-don’t go too fast. Each carve takes time to develop, going just a bit slower really helps draw out those semicircular pencil lines.
-conditions really matter. Moderate slope, cleaner conditions are just about the only place I can really get that specific flow going.
I love that your digging into this aspect of riding. Being mindful of where you can improve and going after it is real life bravery.
Dales riding is so playful!
Thanks for letting me ramble. I do love snowboarding, thinking about it, dreaming about it!
So much to learn!
#dubnation!!!!
Great post!
I’ve found that if you push your bindings further to the heel you can throw some really nice carves. Not all bindings are setup for it, the arbors I used to run only allowed for stance width changes. It has helped with evening out my turns because I have always been able to do toe turns on a dime but my heels just don’t look as pretty and this has helped with it a lot. None of my boards have heel or toe overhang so it’s always just been a style choice for me not necessity.
@@glub__blub Heel-side carves are definitely more challenging.
Increasing the high backs forward lean was a game changer for me
100% crucial tips for carving here... then there indeed becomes so much to learn about posture, muscle memory, positioning etc. to refine a killer carving style! 🏂↩️💨
this guy absolutely knows whats good!! Yewwww thank you!
Casey my boy I'm abouta quarter of the way thru this video and noticing you are riding union bindings but they have adjustable heel cups so instead of compromising your stance width you can slide that heel cup in to center your boot and also have the stance you are comfortable with. Love you brother. I assumed you would know but we are always learning new things. I love to freakin see it brother
Tell me you didn’t watch the whole video without telling me you didn’t watch the whole video 😂 that was good 🙏
@@CaseyWillax He literally told you he did not watch the whole video...
Mentioned at three minutes. Haven’t seen it at all ;p
@Casey Willax noting that I watched the whole video but commented mid way through lol
11:56 sickest breakdance move ever. I thought you were about to start crawling all over the snow for a minute. You should name this move 🤙
Hahaha
Just bought a pair of Union STRs and I love them. They’re pretty great for me as a beginner/intermediate on an old board. Thanks for the encouragement and stoke!
hell ya you're crushing!
You've just earned yourself another sub. This video made me strap my boots into my bindings and I saw that the heel edge was sticking out way more than the toes. Hopefully this explains why I've always had a better toeside. I'm 6'4 and got size 14 boots so finding a wide enough board has always been a struggle, currently riding a Korua Otto 61 and It's been working great so far. Can't wait to dig that heel edge deeper in the snow than it's ever been dug before!
Thank you Max!! Appreciate that a lot!
I fully recommend seeing if you can squeeze into a smaller boot. Most people go a full size down and let their feet pack in the boot. Verde wears a size 10 boot but has an 11 foot just to fit in a medium binding haha
Knowing when to de-stoke is so crucial… there’s a time to dial it up, and a time to dial it in for anything. It’s tough to dial it in, but it helps you prepare for when you need to dial it up! You’ll be hittin those huge kickers soon big dog. Love this video style #dubnation
Hahaha putting the rhymes on em! Thanks for watching G yewwww
Hey there, I started watching but needed to step away so disregard this comment if you covered it in the video. Rather than using the disc to center your boots, consider using Unions adjustable heel cup built into the binding, to perfect your heel/toe overhang. It's a better solution than using the disc (for unions). This will allow you to still use the left / right movement of the disc to Dial in your nose/tail position and binding stance width.
Lastly.... consider rotating your high backs to the board edge, as union also allows for that adjustment.
You're rocking it! Have fun!
yewww!!
Great video as always. I switched to a 155W and never looked back (on size 11US).
Thats the way!! Or squeeze into a size 10 boot somehow and use medium bindings
Great to see the discussions on binding placement and all the variables involved in riding! Both Ted and I talked about the complexity of riding and creating edge angles and pressure! I fully agree the the newer wide and volume shirted boards change the speed and timing use of the ride. Edge to edge I find them slower to engage and holding me more upright over the board without as much transfer across the deck keeping me higher up right. Nice work on trying to educate more rider 's about the complexity of shredding!
These guys know whats good! Took me so many years to figure it all out hahah
Dude Casey this makes me so hype. Ive been riding the exact same board this week and its a learning curve for sure, but like nate said im never going back. So stoked to see the same progress ive been experiencing this week
Yewwww its such a game changer!!
Thanks for the tips bro I've noticed over the last season when I actually put some time and effort into building a couple rigs that fit my riding style and biting the bullet which means SPENDING MORE THAN THE CHEAPEST GEAR AVAILABLE I noticed my overall experience riding has improved dramatically. Not to say that you can just spend your way into proper technique but if you're riding gear that is 15+ years old it might be time to re-up. That coupled with some actual time spent drilling the techniques and fundamentals and just overall improving my strength, I'm starting to see some rea progress and you're helping to motivate me!
THIS!!
When you figure something out that you LOVE you might as well invest in yourself!
Great advice.... yewwww
Being a bigger guy (6’3” w/ 13 boots), this video hits home. I ride a 158 marhar ljx which is 29cm under foot, and I still boot out if I carve aggressively. This has and continues to be one of my biggest struggles on a snowboard, because there isn’t anyone who makes waist widths over 30cm unless you pay double for a custom build. In my opinion, the board you ride should be just as wide (preferably wider) than the cm sizing on your boot if you want to carve well. This isn’t exact since different boots have different profiles, but it’s a good reference when helping other people buy their first boards.
Awesome video bro 👏
Thanks for the little anecdote for the dream stokers! This guy knows!!

I ride a 155w (26.4 waist) with a size 12 32 tm2. I got those ultras and loved them minus the fact they had a weird pressure point on the inside of my foot near the heel. Really felt it when I would drive into shit with my back leg. Stoked to see they worked for you!
The wide is going to be a game changer. Start riding that thing daily and it will feel like home In No time.
Weird! Check and see if another pair from a homie or something does the same thing!
if you have a shoe size 9 and above, consider a Donek custom made snowboard. You wont be just snowboarding, you'll be jet-boarding on snow :)

Yewwww thanks for watching!
Checking in for all the big footed sasquatch riders out there rockin size 14 and up😂 I normally wear 14.5/15 shoes so I was excited to find out I could fit size 14 thirtytwo's. My first experience riding I was given a super narrow board and my toes were off the edge about 4-5 inches!! I had no idea what I was doing so I kept eating it. Fast forward to today I'm riding a LibTech Stump Ape 157uw(freakin brick slab) and a Marhar Lumberjack 158w. Also I figured out rotating the center discs vertically literally at the beginning of the season and it was a game changer! Great minds think alike lol Lookin to add that 160 Double Barrel to the family whenever they're in stock for sure!!
Yewwww the advice is on point!! Thanks G!

Did not know you had boot drag.. I went down from a 162/163 to 158w/157w when you first did the collaboration with Lago when said you road 155s . That was the first thing I notice when I got into ridding the boot drag was the first thing I notice and was uncomfortable..
-ridding wide is the way !
And to any bigger guy 230+ I’m 6’3 295 on a 157w free thinker.. I went stiffer to compensate for weight. I also have the 158w in the custom with 11 boot
Yewww im finally on the grind hahah. Feels good!
Great points on the setup. I got a Double Barrel wide this season thanks to you, and it is wider than most wides…but after a bit of riding it became my favorite board…I rode an Academy Propaganda and K2 Medium , both in wides this season also…but the Double Barrel is so light, so poppy, with a flex that is do smooth, it’s my favorite….plan to make it the daily next season

You can shift your front binding towards the toeside and back bonding towards heelside to have less drag on the foot that's more engaged in either carve.
Yessirrrrr
I put my binding all the way to the furtherest away from the heelside. This way I have minimum heel drag, and a little bit of toe drag. It's easier for human body to deal with toe drag than heel drag, because we can bend our knees to compensate, letting the board to carve at lower edge angle without losing grip. There's nothing we can do biomechanically on the heel side, so it's better just to make heelside easier rather than the toe side. Also putting up my high back to the lowest angle allows me to bend my knees on the heelside without lowering the edge angle(which will cause you to lose balance)
This guy knows!! Even distribution would be the best. Check your boot size and see if you can size down for a medium binding!
@@CaseyWillax I like to sacrifice a bit of toe side freedom to make my heel side deeper. Because heelside is so much harder
that crazy halfpipe/snakerun section is sick
so much fun!
If you want to get really low and maxed out board and boots specs the only thing left is get a binding without heelcup. On heel side it not the boot it's the binding that hits the snow first. Flow NX2 carbon with fusion strap is the secret.
That's when you're really going for it eh
@@CaseyWillax it's all about them g's while turning.

Just happened to come across your channel and the steez and fun you guys have on the mtn is infectious. Love your friend's comment "we're trying to ride until we're 90" which pretty much sums it up. I used to hit some pretty big jumps 10 yrs ago but a nasty crash and crutches made me rethink my risk appetite. Gonna watch more of your old vids; you just earned another sub my man! Keep it fun. BTW I'm riding 57W this year first time... not sure what to expect but hoping for a more relaxed stable ride. Poetry!!
I started this year and have a size 13 shoe riding a 165 board. Didnt even think about width at first but once i got comfortable i was booting out. Went to a 32 size 12 shifty boot. Fits much better and the boot size is muuuuch smaller. Ill be upgrading to a wide board next year but i played a lot shifting my bindings around to find the sweet spot. The toe and heel angle on the 32 boots also seems to help. Knapton also mentioned spacers but i didnt go that far :)
the shifty is a super flexy boot -- you don't have issues ?
Takes a bit of tweaking and then you're on it!! Yewww
Have been riding a wide 156 for about 20 years now, I'm actually doing the opposite of you in trying to switch to a mid/narrow 157. It's tough getting used to both simultaneously as they each offer different positives while giving differing edging capabilities. Ultimately, the wide is the better all around board, with much more stability at not much more weight.
Heavy
156 bataleon boss wide with union atlas. Hands down and up the best setup ive ever had with 20 years + of riding. Im only a size 11 boot though the extra width in the board extremely outweighs any negative points, if any in my opinion. I also run pretty small angles at 9 and -9 which is my sweet spot. I used to run 15 then 12 and a really wide stance though as a now 36 year old having less angle really helps my knees stay inline and transition from heel to toe feels so much more efficient at 9 degrees. On any terrain...jib, jumps, back country which is very rare where im from in Taranaki, New Zealand. My local hill doesnt get many days so have to go to the volcanic ice block Ruapehu in the centre of the north island. Pow days is a super rarity. 22inch stance with 9+ and -9 is where its at for this old dad bod frother...
Absolutly love to hear it

I didn't look through the comments or make it totally through this video yet, But Union bindings, Specifically, You can adjust the heal cup instead of mounting your baseplate perpendicular. (Which is nice to maintain boot position on board, but still be able to micro slide bindings tip to tail.)
Thumbs up on that aspect. :P Union makes some very nice, versatile bindings. Easy to use and easy to set up and adjust on the fly.

Big foot problems. I got 14s. Any board under 320mm nose/tail is a no go. Volume shifted like the twin pigs are sick, but the radius makes carving for tall dude nearly impossible at speed without tucking your face to your knees.

Woooo for the stoke!
I've got a size 8 and thought a volume shifted deck would be sluggish, but I didn't even notice. Now the wide is one of my favorites. Could also be due to the skate tech on the bindings that really drive those edges.
You're one step closer to Knapton!
@@CaseyWillax naw, I'm more like nap-a-ton.
Funny enough I learned on a wide board and I know exactly what you mean about the slower tipping point onto edge. I’ve actually gone to a regular board and I think it’s helped me a lot since I’m still not really good but I think learning on a wide really held me back. You have to be more assertive in your motions and really put effort into the edge. With my 10.5 boots I barely have toe or heel overhang on a wide so I think in my opinion 11/11.5+ is the cutoff where wide boards really shine for people. But yes getting the right waist width and binding setup makes such a difference, I had too big a binding as well so I had too much heel overhang. Stepped down to a medium binding and set the bindings more centered but had to error a little more towards toe side on these bindings. Turning response was instantly more noticeable and much easier to straight line on toe edge where before I had to really do the ankle strap into my boot, now just a minor amount of toe pressure and it stays stable and doesn’t catch edge. I haven’t really tried carving with the regular setup yet though so hopefully I don’t get drag.
thank for the little anecdote for the dream!! Such a game changer figuring this stuff out hahah!!

Duuuude, size 12/13 depending on the boot. Wide boards all the way!!! Something I experiment with is changing my front/back overhand depending conditions or what I want to do. If you scoot the toes up toward the toe edge, it'll feel like a narrow board but have awesome hook on the heel for icy days. Deep pow, ride centered. Carvy-days, more toward the heel overhang. Switch it up!!
Finding the wide with big feet switched it alllll up

ONE MORE THING to think about, the toe strap, if you can put it on top of your foot instead of over your toes you can save some clearance
Yewwwww good method!
I like wide boards for carving, powder, jumps and rails. Not so much for icy tight tree runs.
If we’re talking pro’s and con’s…I’m pretty sure wide boards are awesome.
You've got that right!
Casey wants the super park dream, Daly wants nothing to do with that nightmare. Hahaha
Hahah Daly needs a taste of the DREAM
11:00, 11:50 Dale demonstrates the advantages of smaller feet for buttering tricks. Just sayin’…that ground game is DOPE.
The guy rips!
@@CaseyWillax No doubt, but I think that that unique talent he’s showing there might be enabled by having smaller feet. Kind of like on a skateboard having the wheels closer together lets you spin the board quicker. It might not be the best for landing jumps though. It’s related to the concept of wide boards in a way.
haha, 12:17 I thought you were talking about the trees.... I am good just going down the hill and doing nothing but sliding on the snow... jumps and parks do nothing for me... I'm all about the fresh air, views, and powder. 2 is square (area) 3 is cubed (volume)... I think the European racers angle their feet pointing forward so they can carve without their toes or heels hitting the snow... I went out once in Switzerland and the bindings were all messed up because they are mostly slalom based or were back in the 90's, I had a horrible snowboarding experience due to the different binding placement, but enjoyed the scenery.

Casey, there’s a solution to having it all. Wide board with responsiveness. All you need are Now bindings! I know that you just got some sick unions but I’ve been riding Now bindings on a wide board (waist width 260) on 8.5 size boots and it rips! Thanks to their skate tech which acts like skateboard trucks that moves to put pressure on the edges to give you that responsiveness.
It’s definitely a game changer and I bet you’ll love it!
On a side note, Daly’s spirit animal needs to be a Tasmanian devil.
I've heard about these! I hear those are epic for skate style riding but when it comes to being aggressive I'd rather have less of the skate tech so there isn't a millisecond in-between response time when say micro edging before taking off a big jump!
Daly is a ledge
@@CaseyWillax I can’t say much about micro edging before a big jump but fridge rides now bindings and the man basically flies on a snowboard… w/ a back pack! Lol… so I think you should definitely give ‘em a try!! 🤙

Welcome to team wide. I'm a sz.12 & Ive gone full nerd on board & boot widths. I've tried damn near every lace boot out there and measured them in bindings on board with a 70 angle(to simulate carving angles) on both toe and heel side & the Burton Kendo boot has the smallest footprint. If you want to shave off even more toe & heel drag without having to go wider on the board get into a pair of those. It's a soft traditional lace boot, super comfy. Also the Vans High-Country or Infuse are a close runner up but they run a little stiffer. & The Nidecker Rift BOA is right there with them and they're making a lace version next year... & these things are stupid comfy right out of the box. Tactical ADV/Lexicons use to be the smallest footprint but they don't make those anymore.
🙌
Tacitcal Lexicons are dope. Still ride em, scavenging new pairs off ebay when I can. Good on ya
@@thk8933 They are. My only gripe is that I have a flatter left foot and the actual sole under the insert has an arch to it that bugged me. If you wear a sz.12 I have a brand new back-up pair I bought when I heard Adidas was exiting the game. Then I stumbled on Kendos and found them more comfy for my flat foot.
@@casey1400 11s (11.5 in shoes, you know how we do). Thanks anyway brother.
Good news though:
NST Duels just dropped on Red Bull TV, what's uuuuuuuup
Ultra does not have forward lean adjustment, which is critical for carving so go for the others.
Ask me about forward lean hahah
Daly rocking dreads now?!?! YEEWWWW
Hahah the guy is an animal all around
For God's sake, "Noone" is not a word.
Not religious
Keep up the stoke homie!! Love your vids and would love to see those bindings on my board! #dubnation
