The SECRET Snowboard Ratio NOONE Talks About…

  • In this video I explain how difference in snowboard width/length, and boot size/model in combination with binding setup will ultimately dictate how low you are able to carve and how much toe/heel drag you will have. For my this is the difference between enjoying snowboarding and being able to carve or being able to jib in the park. It’s a tough life for big footed gentleman and I hope this video can help some of you out with a similar issue! Yewww!! - C Dub 03/02/23 #1254 #cvlogs

I’m an intermediate rider in my mid-40s and admittedly, I am proud of my carving.
-Centering the binding (equal heel & toe over hang) is crucial.
-Squaring the high back to the heel side edge helps.
-Increasing the binding’s forward lean is vital; keep adding more until you’ve gone too far, then back it up-I didn’t know what I liked until I went past the point. Important note: remember to remove almost all the forward lean if you’re headed back into the park; you want that forgiving movement to help landings.
-don’t go too fast. Each carve takes time to develop, going just a bit slower really helps draw out those semicircular pencil lines.
-conditions really matter. Moderate slope, cleaner conditions are just about the only place I can really get that specific flow going.
I love that your digging into this aspect of riding. Being mindful of where you can improve and going after it is real life bravery.
    Dales riding is so playful!
Thanks for letting me ramble. I do love snowboarding, thinking about it, dreaming about it!
    So much to learn!

I’ve found that if you push your bindings further to the heel you can throw some really nice carves. Not all bindings are setup for it, the arbors I used to run only allowed for stance width changes. It has helped with evening out my turns because I have always been able to do toe turns on a dime but my heels just don’t look as pretty and this has helped with it a lot. None of my boards have heel or toe overhang so it’s always just been a style choice for me not necessity.

You've just earned yourself another sub. This video made me strap my boots into my bindings and I saw that the heel edge was sticking out way more than the toes. Hopefully this explains why I've always had a better toeside. I'm 6'4 and got size 14 boots so finding a wide enough board has always been a struggle, currently riding a Korua Otto 61 and It's been working great so far. Can't wait to dig that heel edge deeper in the snow than it's ever been dug before!

Hey there, I started watching but needed to step away so disregard this comment if you covered it in the video. Rather than using the disc to center your boots, consider using Unions adjustable heel cup built into the binding, to perfect your heel/toe overhang. It's a better solution than using the disc (for unions). This will allow you to still use the left / right movement of the disc to Dial in your nose/tail position and binding stance width.
Lastly.... consider rotating your high backs to the board edge, as union also allows for that adjustment.
    You're rocking it! Have fun!

Great to see the discussions on binding placement and all the variables involved in riding! Both Ted and I talked about the complexity of riding and creating edge angles and pressure! I fully agree the the newer wide and volume shirted boards change the speed and timing use of the ride. Edge to edge I find them slower to engage and holding me more upright over the board without as much transfer across the deck keeping me higher up right. Nice work on trying to educate more rider 's about the complexity of shredding!

Thanks for the tips bro I've noticed over the last season when I actually put some time and effort into building a couple rigs that fit my riding style and biting the bullet which means SPENDING MORE THAN THE CHEAPEST GEAR AVAILABLE I noticed my overall experience riding has improved dramatically. Not to say that you can just spend your way into proper technique but if you're riding gear that is 15+ years old it might be time to re-up. That coupled with some actual time spent drilling the techniques and fundamentals and just overall improving my strength, I'm starting to see some rea progress and you're helping to motivate me!

Being a bigger guy (6’3” w/ 13 boots), this video hits home. I ride a 158 marhar ljx which is 29cm under foot, and I still boot out if I carve aggressively. This has and continues to be one of my biggest struggles on a snowboard, because there isn’t anyone who makes waist widths over 30cm unless you pay double for a custom build. In my opinion, the board you ride should be just as wide (preferably wider) than the cm sizing on your boot if you want to carve well. This isn’t exact since different boots have different profiles, but it’s a good reference when helping other people buy their first boards.
    Awesome video bro 👏

My first experience riding I was given a super narrow board and my toes were off the edge about 4-5 inches!! I had no idea what I was doing so I kept eating it. Fast forward to today I'm riding a LibTech Stump Ape 157uw(freakin brick slab) and a Marhar Lumberjack 158w. • @MyCarllee
    @MyCarllee Рік тому

I put my binding all the way to the furtherest away from the heelside. This way I have minimum heel drag, and a little bit of toe drag. It's easier for human body to deal with toe drag than heel drag, because we can bend our knees to compensate, letting the board to carve at lower edge angle without losing grip. There's nothing we can do biomechanically on the heel side, so it's better just to make heelside easier rather than the toe side. Also putting up my high back to the lowest angle allows me to bend my knees on the heelside without lowering the edge angle(which will cause you to lose balance)

Have been riding a wide 156 for about 20 years now, I'm actually doing the opposite of you in trying to switch to a mid/narrow 157. It's tough getting used to both simultaneously as they each offer different positives while giving differing edging capabilities. Ultimately, the wide is the better all around board, with much more stability at not much more weight.

  • @WiZoRD_C45

156 bataleon boss wide with union atlas. Hands down and up the best setup ive ever had with 20 years + of riding. Im only a size 11 boot though the extra width in the board extremely outweighs any negative points, if any in my opinion. I also run pretty small angles at 9 and -9 which is my sweet spot. I used to run 15 then 12 and a really wide stance though as a now 36 year old having less angle really helps my knees stay inline and transition from heel to toe feels so much more efficient at 9 degrees. On any terrain...jib, jumps, back country which is very rare where im from in Taranaki, New Zealand. My local hill doesnt get many days so have to go to the volcanic ice block Ruapehu in the centre of the north island. Pow days is a super rarity. 22inch stance with 9+ and -9 is where its at for this old dad bod frother...

Funny enough I learned on a wide board and I know exactly what you mean about the slower tipping point onto edge. I’ve actually gone to a regular board and I think it’s helped me a lot since I’m still not really good but I think learning on a wide really held me back. You have to be more assertive in your motions and really put effort into the edge. With my 10.5 boots I barely have toe or heel overhang on a wide so I think in my opinion 11/11.5+ is the cutoff where wide boards really shine for people. But yes getting the right waist width and binding setup makes such a difference, I had too big a binding as well so I had too much heel overhang. Stepped down to a medium binding and set the bindings more centered but had to error a little more towards toe side on these bindings. Turning response was instantly more noticeable and much easier to straight line on toe edge where before I had to really do the ankle strap into my boot, now just a minor amount of toe pressure and it stays stable and doesn’t catch edge. I haven’t really tried carving with the regular setup yet though so hopefully I don’t get drag.

If you scoot the toes up toward the toe edge, it'll feel like a narrow board but have awesome hook on the heel for icy days. Deep pow, ride centered. Carvy-days, more toward the heel overhang. haha, 12:17 I thought you were talking about the trees.... I am good just going down the hill and doing nothing but sliding on the snow... jumps and parks do nothing for me... I'm all about the fresh air, views, and powder. 2 is square (area) 3 is cubed (volume)... I think the European racers angle their feet pointing forward so they can carve without their toes or heels hitting the snow... I went out once in Switzerland and the bindings were all messed up because they are mostly slalom based or were back in the 90's, I had a horrible snowboarding experience due to the different binding placement, but enjoyed the scenery.

Casey, there’s a solution to having it all. Wide board with responsiveness. All you need are Now bindings! I know that you just got some sick unions but I’ve been riding Now bindings on a wide board (waist width 260) on 8.5 size boots and it rips! Thanks to their skate tech which acts like skateboard trucks that moves to put pressure on the edges to give you that responsiveness.

I've tried damn near every lace boot out there and measured them in bindings on board with a 70 angle(to simulate carving angles) on both toe and heel side & the Burton Kendo boot has the smallest footprint. If you want to shave off even more toe & heel drag without having to go wider on the board get into a pair of those. It's a soft traditional lace boot, super comfy. Also the Vans High-Country or Infuse are a close runner up but they run a little stiffer. & The Nidecker Rift BOA is right there with them and they're making a lace version next year... & these things are stupid comfy right out of the box. Tactical ADV/Lexicons use to be the smallest footprint but they don't make those anymore.
