    Learning how to mend/sew/tailor is a great way to be sustainable too. You can give new life to old garments. You can upcycle and customize thrifted garments. Also, when you can't avoid packaging waste, think about cleaning it as best as you can and using it as filler for diy art projects. It's a great way to sequester plastic!

    If you have granite counters both vinegar and lemon juice are a no go.

      @@sustainableliving8461 in our house we have two cleaners: spray with water/vinegar and spray with dishwashing liquid/water (both in a 1/10 ratio). those cover every thing we clean (besides laundry). vinegar is best for glass, soap will do the trick on surfaces that don't do well with vinegar.

      I totally don’t understand single use napkins in the home, especially those who use them just to dry their hands 😭 like whyyyyyy

    We have slowly changed to more sustainable living in just small steps...and the smaller the steps, the easier everyone in my family has adjusted. Especially buying 2nd hand clothing..luckily I have sons who love second hand clothing and don't conform to name brands like many of their friends. Meal planning has changed my life and we have next to no food waste. Baby steps is what has helped my family and now they can't think of doing things any other way than to save their future planet and lives by using almost all of your tips!! Thank you!! xo

    I keep a ziplock bag of veggie scraps in my freezer so I can eventually make my own veggie broth when it gets full. I also use socks that have holes in them to scrub counters and sinks or to dust surfaces. When my bananas or other fruits are very ripe or on the verge of going bad, I make either a baked oatmeal or pancakes with them.

    I just want to express my gratitude, Emmy. I have been watching your videos for a couple of years now, and they have inspired me to become more responsible and sustainable. What I appreciate the most about your message is that it emphasises the importance of taking action rather than looking for perfection. We can always start small and keep improving over time!! Thank you, and happy holidays 🎄✨

    Thank you Immy for link to refurbished electronics.
    I love your zero waste ideas, especially composting food scraps. I have a worm bin and also compost in my backyard to enrich my garden beds and indoor plants.
    I agree to start small with one or two sustainable living ideas so they become habits.
    My favorite is no longer using traditional wrapping paper which is made from more clay and ash than paper fiber, so it's not recyclable in curbside recycling. I am using fabric from second hand stores like Art Parts in Boulder, CO and using the furoshiki method. I reuse holiday cards for homemade gift tags. And give gifts of experiences or food.

    I've found that the cleaner tabs actually work better than other brands of cleaning spray. Unfortunately, my local grocery store took out their bulk bins to add a wine section. BUT, just across the street is a locally-owned natural food store that has a really nice bulk section. It is often much cheaper than buying it packaged and I can use my own containers. They also have an AMAZING bulk spice section! Check out your local shops people! :)

    Denver's compost collection has been a very slow roll out. Many areas in Denver still don't have compost bins. And surrounding communities don't have it at all. Our intentional community in Lakewood does our own composting, so I'm thankful for that. We're lucky to have land to compost on in the city.

    Slowly getting to more sustainable items in my life. Best idea was to use reusable shopping/produce bags and sometimes no bag at all. Eating less meat and purchasing more of my grocery items from bulk food stores is a game changer. Thanks for the tip on tech...let's see what I can do with that one.

    8:04 - Can I just say how much I loved the cornfield vibe (slightly off topic, but there’s always time for a wee bit of nostalgia.) Yes, Immy, you have given so many wonderful tips, ideas, and inspirations in today’s video. I think mindfulness and awareness are key to reducing waste and saving money, whether it be one’s clothing, household decor, fridge and pantry, and even hobbies. Whilst I am not a true blue minimalist, I have found that embracing the “less is more” mindset is very liberating and encourages one to appreciate what they have and to want less. Thanks for all your awesome content recently. I am feeling spoiled by all your posts and uploads this December. Ⓜary💕

    Also most supermarkets in the UK definitely sainsburys recycle plastic bags now! I don’t use plastic bags but I do buy a lot of secondhand items off eBay or vinted which often come in packaging bags which if I don’t reuse I can now recycle!

    I so enjoyed this video. I feel a bit silly in myself because i’ve watched your other “100 swaps” videos, so i’m familiar with a lot of the swaps, but just listening to you talk about swaps always gets the geers turning for me-“oh, could i swap this? What other parts of my life could use some green?”
    Keep it up. :)

    It's also possible to make compost and grow some foods if you have the resources of space, sunlight, and time (especially to water container gardens). In my case I would have to buy carrot seeds yearly, but I can save seeds of string beans sustainably.

    Would love a video on composting and the different methods! I want to give it a try myself although my council does collect but don’t know where to start. I’m disabled so high maintenance options aren’t an option as I sometimes have several days when I can’t do anything after a high energy event so I don’t think worms would work :)

    • @whateverislovely8654
      @whateverislovely8654 5 місяців тому +1

      I have worms in a bucket inside my house because it gets too hot for them outside. In winter I only feed them around 1 time a week or depending on how fast they are eating what I last gave them. It’s so super low maintenance. No filling or turning or trying to find brown and green matter to balance out regular compost. It’s so simple and easy. Definitely give it some more research. I used 2 black buckets from Home Depot and 1 bucket lid. This was the cheapest option but there’s tons of premade options too.

    If you make the cleaner by putting citrus peels in vinegar, over time it will actually develop a scoby which you can then use to make kombucha.

  • @mikwolf2236
    @mikwolf2236 Місяць тому

    Vinegar and lemon juice are actually not recommended for a lot of cleaning, since they're acidic and can slowly eat away at sealants, and they're not effective anti microbial agents under normal cleaning conditions, instead I would recommend 70% rubbing alcohol, if you can't find 70% you can always dilute the more common 98% by adding .2 liters of water for every half liter of alcohol. The addition of water prevents the alcohol from evaporating quite as fast and makes it more effective as an anti microbial

    Hey i love your videos and your journey towards sustainability. I live in a city where we dont have a city level composting or greener waste disposal options. If you can share how it works in your city that would be great!
    I'd also love the inputs from others in the community!!

      I live in boulder, Colorado- 30 mins outside denver and we have a rolling bins for composting, just like recycle and garbage bins. also, here people have different sized bins for what they need the most, and pay a different amount for it. so I've seen a lot of people have a very small trash bin, but large recycle and compost bins. trucks come around and pick it up and take it to be processed and then the compost is sold to farmers to cover the costs of operating, and eventually hope to make money for the city by selling the compost.

    • @MyFocusVaries
      @MyFocusVaries 3 місяці тому

      While citrus essential oils are toxic if ingested, the tiny amount that would be present in the air from a few sprays used while cleaning would be extremely unlikely to be an issue. There's a lot of discussion online about the use of essential oils and pets, but almost no research (I searched vet sites etc.), and none about its use in cleaners. Most cleaners we buy are scented, and if a cat tolerates the scents present in those products, they're unlikely to be bothered by the bit of citrus oil in the vinegar cleaner. Plus they're unlikely to linger in a room where we're cleaning. Though they'd probably hate the smell of vinegar, even though it's safe for them, and they'd likely skedaddle.
