A lot of them were down and not working. So my point is to keep a self driving truck working we're going to need a lot more mechanics on call. Just think about what if the computer malfunctions for just 2 seconds. You can kill a lot of people on the highway in 2 seconds driving a big rig. And you're right the cameras and sensors will definitely malfunction in harsh weather.

If the ATA figures were correct, there would be 80 000 loads that are left sitting on the loading docks and don't get hauled. That is not the case. It would also mean that shippers would outbid each other to get their freight hauled. If you look at the rates being offered on the spot market, that is also not the case.' The ATA has been singing this song for years, and they are full of crap.
I moved my warehouse location to make it easier for the delivery companies I use. There's not a day I don't say thank you to them for the work they do every time they deliver. It's a hard job.

Theres no shortage it’s just it’s hard to get hired as a new driver with no CDL experience and most drivers get fired if there non union for the dumbest shit. I’ve been doing this for 12 years and trucking can be very confusing to navigate. Local jobs are even harder then most OTR because you have to get back to the plant before your hours run out and then you have to commute back home at the end of each shift so you are completely exhausted
Also you can’t just punch out like you’re in an office or job site like a 9 to 5. You have to deal with whatever the road throws at you and whatever situation you’re in cause you are miles away from your terminal and you’re supervisors and dispatchers are long gone and can’t help you when you have a problem. Over road shortage . Pay is the problem, pay us. Our fuel rates keep going up but it takes weeks for government to give us fuel surcharges. Fuel goes up daily and weekly, need better system that kicks those rates out as fuel increases. Road are a problem. fix the roads. You want people to stay out and risk their lives on a daily. Owner opts. Are forking out hundreds of thousands in fuel and maintenance. Out of pocket fuel bill for a year of work dedicated to California and out east as far as ohio, $160,000 roughly, maintenance 15,000 + tires, shocks, oil changes just to name a few. Then when said and done your paying 13, 000 to government in taxes for the year not including road taxes thru the year, on roads that are tearing our equipment up. Then your fighting for your life on the road against other drivers and daily drivers who don't give you the space needed to do your job safely. Young drivers no not good idea in my opinion, not all 18, 19 , 20 yr Olds have the Mentality to do this job, there is more to this job then getting in and holding on to the steering wheel of an 80,000lb vehicle , you need to know when to pull over and call it a day when your tired even the older group in this job has that problem. Yep many dry areas. Happens a lot. Back when I was OTR I was once deadheaded from Atlanta to Chicago. Fortunately we were paid for deadhead miles.
