in general in cartooning you add those hatching marks to denote areas where your lighting is hitting a change in the shape and causing a shadow such as cheek bones and where muscle groups meet for example. looking at the character models for Borderlands it seems like they use heavier/thicker lines to do the same thing, mark out bone structure/musculature but then use thinner lines to add imperfections/scratches/scars/weathering and "grime"
I think you could lift it even further by copying another gunpla trick and using a couple of shades of the same colour to add some variety to the panels. Still quick to do. Super effective painting, regardless.
I want to paint my Orks in the style. Would be super neat to see you do a video with a model with alot of "organic" curves to see line placement and such. Great work!
My option for doing the lines would probably be Sakura Pigma Micron pens if I ever end up doing something in this style. Manga artists apparently use them to ink their drawings because they're really fine and cover well. So far I've used the smallest one for eyes.
Cross hatching is for shading. You should definately look up some tutorials on cross hatching in 2D art, and then revisit the technique - I'd love to see the result.
Great stuff would like to see a humanoid done in cell shade (comic style) and as payment I point you to Faber-Castell Pitt artist pens. They have alot of different tip types some even feel like a brush but the two I highly recommend is the white and black India ink. Good for edge highlights and have a little work time to wipe them off if your hands shake like mine 😅
Very impressive! If I remember correctly, those hash marks are there to imply texture or weathering. Otherwise the subject looks just a bit too smooth.
try that color pencil vs. edge highlighting reverse block style. The edge one is just putting down the light color as the biggest patched base, the stepping back with a darker tone ie: base seafoam, move away from the area you want bright, next a different color. basically a reverse paint selector chart:
You got me into slap chop and now I am considering to use this comic book technique. So cool! Was very intimidated but this sharpy idea sounds easier and it came out great!!
Very interesting! Iv always appreciated methods that are more unorthodox or out side the box. Bc usually we find things that work and things that don't.
one thing I'll note (from learning on gunpla) is that the sharpie fine liners are pretty decent for staying black over time, but the traditional ones tend to turn purple.
Instead of glue, try blue tac (the stuff for sticking pictures to the wall without holes) to hold the model on the stand. Then no worry about breaking.
I wasn't super interested until you brought out the sharpie which absolutely blew my mind. I don't know why it wasn't as expecting that lol. That's an awesome miniature and it came out great. Good job!
Hey, not a bad idea ! But one should still consider to add shadows in occulted/inner areas, thus adding more contrast and focus point on the model. It can be done by imagining what a cell-shading material (3D) would behave, and that's it ! Just big lumps of flat paint and you should have a much better result. Anyway, I like your end result a lot.
The random lines are probably a combination of showing texture or damage, or in the case of a line on a cylinder, highlighting the shape. Theres a toy and collectables company called NECA that does a lot of toys in this style. The big one is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and its stuch a cool effect. Ive never really considered painting minis that way though. But I think tweaking it and going for something like Transformers and other 80s anime could look really cool. Theres some tutorials on grimdark style and the basic principles is basically flipping the eavy metal approach of edge highlighting with a brighter color, instead going darker. All about contrast. I wanna do a whole kill team like this with edge black lining.
Neat technique. You could probably find some Gundam markers or art markers in a size that are a bit more conducive to minis than a sharpie. And in more colour options! You mentioned you are newer to painting. Out of curiosity, do you thin your paints?
Nice, definitely going to give this a go! Love these vids. Random question people, is there a way to fill a gap on a resin mini without attaching before painting? I bought one but the base and mini have a gap between them but i wanted to paint seperately. (be so awkward when together).
Another new way to paint, very nice have you tried pen Highlighting and metallic Pen painting using Sharpies? Kind Regards p.s sorry my description of these methods is very basic but I is old and crap at this lol
@MiniatureHobbyist ahhhhhhh lmfao. Regardless its a cool model. Definitely considering it for my steel rift mechs. Ill definitely thin my paints though
*_Well, it looks like you have drawn on your mini with a magic marker._* *_And, if you don't tell how you painted the mini, many won't think you used a pen._*
robot is from Print Minis - www.myminifactory.com/users/PrintMinis

Tabletop Borderlands.
I might adopt this style for my Gaslands stuff, I dig it.
Yeah gaslands would look cool like this 🙂
Man, I wish we could get Colour Forge spray in the US.
Krylon makes a ton of colors here.
Same here in Norway
For those of us in the US, that Krylon Fusion stuff is decent, as are most Rustoleum products.
Yup its all I use now as it dries so good 🙂
I wish the same but EU too

I think a borderlands theme Ork army would be sick~!

The miniature looked great. I loved how the base looked.
Cheers, I think the base came out better than the robot lol 🙂
Now I want a couple of Mekbois as a killteam squad!
Love this type of style, so vibrant.
Your decal could se a coat of mate varnish after, so they would look like they are painted. Always love your waffling
Have to admit I never varnish miniatures, maybe I need too and the waffle will never stop lol 🙂

Hiya, cheers for the tip I will take a look and I will try and find a comic book hero to paint in this way 🙂
Very impressive! If I remember correctly, those hash marks are there to imply texture or weathering. Otherwise the subject looks just a bit too smooth.
Cheers, yeah that makes sense, either way the hash marks do add more character to the.................well character 🙂

Cheers for the info I will try that on the next one, I want to find a super hero miniature to paint that way 🙂
Had to drop a like on this one. I had many people teach me new painting tips and techniques but never had someone teach me a new style before!
just did this a months ago, was over happy with the result. my necromunda ash waste nomad really pops up in my collection.
That base looks so cool
I always appreciate this style - looks great everywhere from minis to cosplay
I really want to do an Ork Kill team this way, they would look so cool 🙂
You got me into slap chop and now I am considering to use this comic book technique. So cool! Was very intimidated but this sharpy idea sounds easier and it came out great!!
Borderland like style on mini. I love it so much. 👍
I love this style. He looks great
Great idea love the painting style. Great channel love the content and its never boring just great entertainment keep up the good work.
Turned out amazing!
Looks like Cell Shaded style from Borderlands. Neat.
Reminds me of Borderlands, very well done👍
I really like that! Looks like a really fun way to paint.

That is something different but it looks GREAT. !!!! Love how it came out.
Orks done this way would be awesome!
Instead of glue, try blue tac (the stuff for sticking pictures to the wall without holes) to hold the model on the stand. Then no worry about breaking.
Love the base!
That looks great! First time I’ve seen the comic style on a miniature. Looking forward to more innovations.
Cheers, its fun to try new things 🙂
I was dubious at first, but love your approach to painting and the final outcome. Looks very cool!
Looks great!!
brilliant work!
This model seems like a great proxy for Leagues of Votann. A big dieselpunk art-deco refrigerator. Nice paint job too.
Haha yup it is a mobile fridge 🙂
this is my go to painting style! I love it! great job for your first go at it. looks awesome!
I wasn't super interested until you brought out the sharpie which absolutely blew my mind. I don't know why it wasn't as expecting that lol. That's an awesome miniature and it came out great. Good job!
That’s really neat man!
It looks awsome. Try black lining by using oil paints - it's so terrific.
Cheers, I will give that a try on the next one 🙂
wow. your figures always seem to just 'Come to Life'! well done!
Thank you so much 🙂

Try looking up Cell Shade technique. It's pretty cool
I found that when I paint metallics I always have the best results that i find that makes them look better is using a dark base coat for it
very cool
very cool comic style
Cheers buddy 🙂
Ive been doing this to my warhammer 40k minis and gundams for years
It's an interesting look. Wouldn't want to do an army in this style.
No it would take forever and look a bit too much, but maybe an ork kill team would be good 🙂
Dang, that looks really cool! I wish I were painting more right now, maybe I'd get my tactical dreadnaught squad out and try this out on 'em.
Technics to see? Maybe stippling for vehicles.
6:00 you mean happy little accidents😂
Haha always 🙂
Very cool.
Thank you so much 🙂
That looks fucking aweeome! And easy! 😍
Cheers, it is, takes a little longer than slapchop painting though but the result is fun 🙂
Lovely
Cheers 🙂

You could maybe clamp them, fill the gap with green stuff, and then carefully separate them?
Dunno. It's hard to say without seeing them, sorry!
@@peterclarke7240 No worries I appreciate you trying to help 👍
Maybe some Synth Wave sheme's might be nice to do :) Cheers
I'll have to take a look at that 🙂
Another new way to paint, very nice have you tried pen Highlighting and metallic Pen painting using Sharpies?
Kind Regards p.s sorry my description of these methods is very basic but I is old and crap at this lol
Hey Im old and crap at this too lol plus I like things nice and basic and simple, maybe I need to get some metallic pens and have a play 🙂
CLAPTRAP!!!
Did you set your cure for 10 minutes? That’s about 5 times as long as I use.
May i Ask which sharpie u used?
This one amzn.to/3ZK9yCN 🙂
slapping on the color so thiccccc! gives me creeps but the endresult is nice from afar
For the love of god. Thin your paints!!!
never 😋
@MiniatureHobbyist ahhhhhhh lmfao. Regardless its a cool model. Definitely considering it for my steel rift mechs. Ill definitely thin my paints though
Sharpie gonna fade to purple under sunlight, won't it?
Hashes in cartooning often denotes something dirty.
Get yourself a Cricut to make stencils! That way you can create your own designs, should you fancy.
I dont know what that is but may need to take a look, I would love to be able to make my own 🙂
No washes..? Would have really made it pop more.
I've tried using pens multiple times, but they've never stuck.
This comic-style black lineing is not as simple as it first seems.
Yup when you first start it looks terrible, you just have to keep going until its all done and then it doesnt look too bad lol 🙂
@@MiniatureHobbyist What I mean is that a lot depends on how you do the scratches and shadow imitations because pulling out the edges is not enough.
Never mind😂 found it
cool 🙂
It's either Borderlands or JOJO.
So are you finished with anycubic now? 😂
Yup, havent used their machine in over 6 months and Im trying to sell it on ebay lol, occasionally use an Elegoo Mars 3 🙂
@@MiniatureHobbyist was there a reason or did you just fancy a change?
Damn, looks so great!
Thank you so much 🙂
NPR in 3d land, non photorealistic render😂
Down below.
Huzzah,, Waffle On! Thank you Thank you!
mmhh NO !
*_Well, it looks like you have drawn on your mini with a magic marker._*
*_And, if you don't tell how you painted the mini, many won't think you used a pen._*
this was bad as hell, you did a orc like this a while back right? or was I dreaming
Bof
Sorry but it looks bad.
Cry about it some more
@@sharkenjoyer Let me guess, you think this looks good and copy it.... Hahahaha
@@FusionDeamon You sound absolutely obnoxious
