I’m really starting to understand why the W221 was the best before it started taking the slippery slope downhill. The W222 wasn’t that bad but you could see where things were headed and now the W223 is just cringe.
I wonder how much money they're pocketing by just getting rid of the buttons and gauge cluster.
@@h2oaddict28 that’s what I’m saying. They increase the price a lot from the w221. Yeah the tech got better but gone are the metal switch gear and machined parts replaced with plastic and glass. It’s honestly depressing. Minimalism Is the downfall of beauty in car interiors.
I don’t see where the W222 was downhill- especially in pre facelift form. Post facelift some cost cutting was apparent ie. door mechanism, metal pieces removed from electric sunroof covers, no metal trunk sill finisher on V6 models
@@esteban75lover23 I wasn't saying the W222 was the start or things going downhill. Rather more along the lines how MB was getting focused on tech and gadgets and some gimmicks instead of focusing purely on luxury. The W222 was a good car my grandfather had both pre facelift and facelift and the facelift did fix most of the flaws on the W222 platform. But the W222 was a good preview on were things where headed on W223 giving its massive focus on tech over quality.

I worked on a MB dealership here on Spain, and a lot of customers that changed their w221 to a w222, it wanted back their 221, because it has better ride confort and better quality and silent. And I can confirm that is true

I Didn't Like the w222.. or its Ugly interior....but thers No Way in Hell the 221 was Quieter and had a Better Ride. Those people were Delusional !
W221 exterior styling is boss level. I do think the interior was improved on W222.

They spent too much on the electronics that they forgot about the luxury experience an s class is meant to give.

@@RiomalSure I admit I haven’t but from what I’ve seen it doesn’t look as premium as its predecessor or other luxury cars that aren’t as in your face with technology.
@@Peter-mj6lz so it is the same as would try to describe a taste o thing which you have never tasted :) most of the people just hate becouse they cannot afford it and maintain. It os a great car with pros and cons but theres no perfect car. In my opinion the cons: its hard to close the door if you ar short and you have opened them too wide, i would add phisical buttons at least 4-6, tank could be 100L. The rest is just great.
@@Riomalwhen I look at the screen inside the car it just feels overwhelming. Maybe I can’t be completely honest as I haven’t ridden in one though.

Daniel, you are like father to me 😭. Your video style is always so awesome. On a side-note, its crazy to see how low flimsy quality these luxury cars have become. I bought my 2007 Lexus LS460 for $22K AUD before tax almost two years ago from a rich family with multiple new LS's and Mercedes and the quality of my car seems to be better than this. Thank you for your service sir and Ill see you in the next one :)

@@DanielKon15 the 70s diesels with the inline 5s and 6s you can find them from 2-20k in California. They have a lot of ground clearance and vacuum lines. I think they are good for someone with not much money. I think they also came in gas

The reality is the Mercedes S class has had to move with the times - people don't buy these vehicles to last them two decades: they are disposable (just like a Tesla) with a lot of tech that will be obsolete in five years. Who the hell will want the headache of owning one of these in ten years? Most of them will end up in scrap yards. It's just not economically viable to build them to Rolls-Royce quality.
Do your really think someone with a Rolls-Royce will keep it for 10 years? Someone with that type of money would not like an outdated car.
S Class is the best luxury car in its segment. The BMW 7 series has the ugliest design I've ever seen. BMW has never been able to keep up with the Mercedes S-Class. They call themselves the ultimate driving machine, but they are now the ultimate ugly flop.
I would watch top gear again if Daniel was hosting it….
That's why I am happy with my 08 S550.

Nope, plus that door handle housing is dark plastic. Just cant easily tell on this model since it is black paint.

Love your videos Daniel. I started with the W220 videos and then got one. Loved it. moved into the Mercedes W221 S550 after, and honestly there are things in the w220 which are better made. Fuel filler cap was metal for example. And many more little details that prove the W220 was not a bad car. Mine was preface lift. Never had a warning light on. Like the W221 - more powerful but as they go on these S classes they loose something along the way. I've had every S from 1963 to 2010, and some multiple times over. In order to accommodate the tech and price of all that added computing power, we see cheap door straps, rubber door surrounds, lots of hidden cost cutting. You only have to go to a scrapyard to really see how they were built.................
I love the 220. It's my favorite and treated me well. I can't believe it's 20 years old now!
You've has every generation of S Class? Would you be willing to rank them? Here's my main question: the gaps and seems and other quality issues that the video points out weren't there in older S Classes? Is that really true? I know the original S Class was built like a vault but it was built with 60-year-old methods. The new one is really inferior to the original?
@@joshharrison1160 Most will agree that the peak of build quality was the W140. These cars lack a lot of the modern electronic features but the build quality is exceptional.

I've just bought a 2020 W222. It's a nice car, but even that has some questionable interior quality compared to my 2017 Quattroporte.

Mercedes made leaps on the new G wagon but the W223 is hideous. Is the new G63 worth the hype?
There is one bad thing on these that no one talks about.
When you close the doors, the force required to actually slam them shut sends reverberations through the cabin.
So the slam sounds cool from the outside, but on the inside, it can hurt your ears.
The build quality is very good though on the new g wagon

S-class has been on a decline since W140. The build quality of this s-class is objectively worse than BMW E90, which had felt window sill lining inside and real metal trims. (if it looked metallic, it was metal). Material quality in W222 wasn't much better either. Thin stuff all around. It just did a better job hiding it. W223? It's not even trying to hide it.

@@DanielKon15 would be an interesting video if you would dig into why Mercedes has chosen to go with a hybrid setup with their engines when manufacturers like BMW have achieved better fuel econ results with their straight 6 turbo engines such as their b58/s58?
I can't for the life of me understand why Mercedes would go the hybrid route when it means less MPG and very marginal gain in performance at the sacrifice of weight and chassis balance.
