Remember last season when Chelsea played Dortmund, half of social media was crying when Kai Havertz got to retake his penalty...they didn't know the rules regarding encroachment in the 'D'
Half of social media was crying because are very inconsistent looking at this rule.
@@Ilyas_0344 Not really, people also didn't understand that it isn't retaken if its scored or if that person doesn't touch the rebound lol - they were posting examples like 'wHaT aBoUT thiS' when the rule didn't apply 🤣
@@AM2K2 its annoying that referees are inconsistent with this rule, that's all.
@@Ilyas_0344 Name me an example where a player encroached, cleared the rebound and the pen wasn't retaken?
@@AM2K2 aaaand.. he's disappeared.
Shout-out to the man who invented it and it was the Egyptian referee who used to be a mathematics teacher back in 1936 (Osman Nuri)
Now that's a great fact to add
Osman Nuri is a Turkish name. Could we have a source? I'm having trouble finding confirmation.
@@edwardcamp3376 i dont know if the refree thing is true as an Egyptian but how is omar nuri a turkish name lol i literally know about 20 people that either have omar or nuri in their name and none of them have anything to do with Turkey.
@@ahmed_4202 Google searches just lead me info about Turkish men with that name. Pardon my ignorance. Anyway, Google is getting more and more useless and I can't find anything about this guy. Rather than just correct me to feel smart, could you maybe direct us to something about this math teacher/referee since you can read things on the subject we English-speakers can't?
@@edwardcamp3376 Egypt was under the Ottoman Empire untill 1914 (until world war I) alongside with the British occupation that came to Egypt in 1881, so some names are related to each other here in the middle east especially between Turkey and Egypt.

As a GK I use this D as guidelines for how far out to the side I can go (not including 1v1s). This is because when you go out of it’s range, you leave massive parts of the goal completely open. It’s quite a useful tool.
Usefulness of the video 10/10 💯
The perfect short
Ds nuts
Imagine saying that to the penalty taker right before he takes it in an effort to make him laugh. “You know you see that D over there? I’ll be behind Ds nuts”

Damn actually didn't know that and very useful.
a football pitch is the definition of 'perfect'. greatest sport of all time
Genuinely, in the noxious miasma that is youtube shorts, this video is just the best video I've seen, and I'm not a massive footy fan.
Excellent video
Actually have never wondered. Saw players standing around it when penalties were being taken and got the gist. Performs the same task as the centre circle at kick off, except you only need to mark the portion of the circle around the penalty spot which sits outside of the box, since nobody is allowed in. Apologies if I’ve repeated stuff from the video. I didn’t watch it because I’ve never wondered.
Goalkeeper here, I always referred to that as a "C shape" 😆💀
😂😂😂
That's why you're in the goals
@@DanceySteveYNWA nah dude I'm a sweeper keeper, I actively participate building up play from the back with my defense and even going up to the other half and playing with midfielders if were in the lead. And I'm also joking, I call it the penalty arc 😆💀
Yeah if you think about it, it's a C. Because before it was added, there was just the penalty box. So when they added the penalty arc they just added a C because it's not part of the penalty box
Wait can goalkeepers hold the ball in the D area??
Thats where u shoot the 3 pointer from innit bruf
As a goalkeeper I use it to see where I am in the box to always make sure I’m in front of the goal
Good point, it’s about the width of the goal huh
It’s also to tell the goalkeeper where the goal is if he is in front of the d. He just has to look to the side and based on where in the d he is standing, he knows where the goal is and doesn’t have to turn his head fully
Don't be stupid.
An answer to a question I never had but am so glad I know now!
I've added this piece of trivia to my arsenal.
Didn't you guys do a whole video on this a while back
This is the short version I guess.
This is just a short
Damn, I just use it to estimate my distance from the goal post to get a shot in

Wow Tifo with insightful content and not filler
Learned something new and important to the sport I love so much growing up watching and playing. Never thought about this part!
I keep learning the most interesting things about football from Tifo.
You learn something new everyday
I’ve been wondering this for so long, thank you
"The football pitch's visual identity" tell us you work in design without telling us you work in design 😂
The same reason we have a circle in the middle of the field. It also has no purpose during open play. Only kickoff
I think they're constantly changing the type of turf. How soft it is, how it makes the ball bounce, how much moisture it can retain when it rains.
This came up JUST as I had started to wonder about it.
The halfmoon, as we call it in Spanish, iconic alongside those audacious players who attempt shots from the border of it in those beautiful and cold Libertadores Cup nights at South American winter
It also has a purpose with helping ref to put wall when it is a free kick, but I forgot how excatly it helps, something with mesureing
Fantastic video, thank you!
Perfect, down to the last minute detail
Thanks I always wondered this actually
I've always wondered what it was for. Really interesting video!!

One of those “ahhhhhhh, okay, yea that actually makes total sense now!” Facts, great video.
As a goalie i had no idea why this existed, thanks
I always found the soccer/football pitches beautiful for some reason
Perfection
Also it is a good area to be when collecting the second ball after a corner
Rules for corners and free kicks used to specify 6 yards, so I'm guessing that it was originally the case for penalties as well, in which case the edge of the penalty area would've indicated that distance, and the D was added at the same time that the distance was increased to 10 yards
Interesting fact, a penalty box is the size of a full basketball court.
"if it's working, don't fix it" - wise person
Perfect loop man 🎉
this is, i swear, my midnight pondering about 2 years ago at 2 AM
Ive only seen a few videos from this channel but its just explaining things that every football fan has known since they were about 5 years old
There’s another benefit from having the „D“: if for whatever reason the marker for the penalty spot can’t be seen (due to snow on the field or bad field conditions especially in lower leagues) you can reconstruct the penalty spot using the „D“ as the penalty spot is the middle point of that circle.
Enlightening
Finally it all makes sense now
It’s also very useful for goalies to locate themselves
Since when did they start calling it a D? Never had I heard that term
I honestly didn’t know this information before now
That is so funny. My brothers and I were discussing this very thing only a few weeks ago. Nice one.
It’s in your book I remember reading about it
I have been thinking about it
I think they should add a stripe for the offside line. Would make it easier for the viewer. Of course, that would be stressful for the groundsman, always removing and replacing the line, but worth it, imo.
Actually, showing the offside line with a laser would be kinda cool, at least for some friendlies.
Do you know how offside works ?
@@Yoshikage-Bowie yes. Having a laser line on the pitch, at the rearmost bodypart of the 2nd last defender is possible.
Before that was a joke
@@Aliquis.frigus Brilliant!
And how do you tell the precise moment the ball has been played by the passer?
Inventor: Osman Nuri 🇪🇬
So it is infact incredibly useful damn
Finally I know now thank you
Ingenious
Football should adopt the old NASL penalty shootout, and the 35 yard line for offside.
No, Americans should just learn the rules we don't need any silly American "innovations".
Thanks i didn't know that
Good to know
the d is also the same radius as the centre circle, a lot of the lines in football markings are the same
Wow this inadvertently explain why we have the circle in the middle of the football pitch. Same reason.
❤ it , ❤ it, ❤ it !
I love to see those green grass. 😊
Also used for referee penalty calls reference point. Also used for goalkeeper ball carrying room for error.
👍 so good
when maths is finally useful
😂😂😂😂
We call this here in brazil "the half moon". D. Haha. Those japanese interactive movie games from the 1990s, of course.
And just an other fact, if the circle of the penalty area were complete the penalty point would be the middle pf the circle
It also used to mark where the ball would goal on a special freekick that was not a penalty in case of a minor foul inside the area. Yes a Foul inside the penalty area hasn't always meant a penalty.
Do one for the circles around the centre apot
That's a brilliant idea, we could call it the center circle.
I’ve always had this doubt and in a local match to it happened, what if a player makes a hand contact with the ball in the “D”, is that a penalty or a free kick, on our local match the ref gave a penalty and we lost 1-0.
I always seen the penalty box + arc as among us 😂
*saw
i think that line helped in open play position more than penalties
Interresting
I have been wondering about that for 50 years
I'm transfixed to that you have realized this so early to late 😅
I've always wondered that along with the centre circle of the pitch but too lazy to look it up 😅
Neat!
How about NASL with the pushed back offside lines?
football is amazing!!!!
Interesting. I always thought it was to do with free kicks for some reason
