Oh you said it, I got this album in the seventies, had it on vinyl, 8-track, later on cassette and CD and I still have my original album of it from long gone Appletree records in Spfld. Illinois.
This was the OPENER!! Lord was by himself ...forever..(10 or 15 min)....the rest joined.....and it was half an hour of bliss. As it faded out they slowly started Smoke on the water....the roar was memorable
This song has always been a favorite. I always like the jazz/blues/ rock fusion style songs like this. Another great one is Canadian band Bachman Turner Overdrive's "Blue Collar" .
One of the doyens of Heavy rock , in no particular order, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black sabbath, all 3 british bands and they invented and gave us the genre of heavy rock.
Ian Gillan once said that Deep Purple are "essentially an instrumental band that throws in some vocals". This song seems to fit that description perfectly.
Now that’s what I call hard rock blues..Deep purple jammed like that nightly during there live performances, going 30 plus minutes.now check out space Truckin.
My first intro to Deep Purple was the live album Made in Japan. After hearing the live versions of their songs the studio albums, although great..... I bought them all....I always added the live versions to my playlist.
One of my favorite albums and just maybe the best song on it. Highway Star is another epic song on this album that is probably responsible for millions of speeding tickets over the years.
If you are listening to Deep Purple , you need Space Truckin from the Made in Japan album !! Space Truckin... Space Truckin.... Space Truckin....... Made in Japan..
Went to see Deep Purple at The world-famous Royal Albert Hall in West London with 5,000 others at this time though I thought 25 PENCE or 34 Cents was a bit steep to watch from "The Gods" haha
Hi Rory. Saw Creedence Clearwater Revival around then, as well. Same Venue.Same Top Tier.Same Price. ..Led Zeppelin? 75 PENCE or $1 @ Wembley Arena, North London 1975 and I know because I STUPIDLY did not attend and still had my ticket until recently!.... I lived in S E London. Did not drive.I was soaking wet after my football team lost at home and a local Fishmonger, accidentally, threw boiling hot water on me and I NEVER did see them. Pink Floyd @Earls Court : Dark Side Of The Monn 1973 =£1 lol. Another BIG mistake? Never seeing RORY Gallagher and then he passed prematurely :(........Good Luck, My Friend...
Hi Rory. Thanks for your kind wishes which are reciprocated, my friend. Yes, I should never take London for granted as back then there were probably 10 World Class Venues plus hundreds of others and even 300 Theatres. You have made me feel guilty not wanting to travel 14 miles! :) The funny thing about that boiling water incident is that I lived over a very busy market that operated 6 days a week and after the Fishmonger threw it he was OVERLY apologetic and THEN I realized why! It was not until I left his stall and moved that the boiling water touched my legs.I thought b4 I moved that it was cold water :) No harm was done! Good Luck ...
Saw these guys on their reunion tour in 1984... They were in top shape and the show was amazing. You gave a great reaction. Its always good to watch your first reaction because it reminds us of what we felt like the first time.... so long ago.... thanks
Mate thank you so much You are the first person who really understood that playing, in that ,it was a jamming session which got recorded for its entirety. It’s a mixture of , blues, jazz and rock&roll all blended into one beautiful melody. This Great little country produced some amazing musicians back in the 70’s, but only now is the world realising that. On a footnote, I hope you get your Dad to play soon. That would be so cool 😎
DP was my first concert at 17yrs old and the best thing I'd ever seen! They were the loudest band in the world they said at the time. I just know my ears buzzed for day's! 😂
Saw them in 1972 and again in 2002, always a great show. You need to try Space truckin and Maybe I am a Leo from this album. So much more great Deep Purple to try. Hoping for reactions from Cream.
This is the best song from their best album. but another little gem from this album is "Maybe I'm a Leo," a song that doesn't get mentioned much, but is really good.
My mother was an organist and pianist too. I grew up listening to her playing and I'm convinced that is why I love these rock groups that use organs and pianos. (NOT SYNTHESIZERES!!!) Deep Purple, Yes, Blue Oyster Cult. You really need to check out Deep Purple's 'Made in Japan' album and the song 'Space Truckin'. Talk about improv!
Even before listening, just want to say that I've listened to several of your videos today, and I've had a lot of songs pop into my head that were ones you should check out, and it turns out you've done most of them. You're getting some great suggestions and making some great choices. This is a must-listen song and I had a feeling it would be out here. One of my all-time favorites. There's something about seeing someone else discover and listen to great music that adds to the enjoyment of listening. And now on to the song...
Wonderful reaction on Deep Purple , i really appreciate not stopping before the song ends . i made a mistake giving wrong facts aboat the original members of DP but for me this is Deep Purple at there best. You got to listen to Deep Purple Made in Japan , exceptionally good live record . I was lucky enough to see them four times in Stockholm during the seventies.
You should try to get your dad in as a guest reacter and play him some Deep Purple! Also, have you reacted to any Emerson Lake and Palmer? They're prog rock rather than metal, but I think you'd like Keith Emerson's keyboard style - maybe "Tarkus" or "Fanfare for the common man"?
Sooo, are you gonna play this for Dad? The album Machine Head was HUGE when I was in high school. I've played harmonica for over 50 years and this was the first real harp solo I learned. ☻☺
Loved it! I really liked your comment where you said “I bet it wasn’t totally planned out like this but they just went with the jam“. That is the kind of band Purple was. Every night they would do songs a bit differently, the solos would be different, so that’s great perception.
This whole album is great, one song after the other. I played a lot of air guitar with this album back in the 70s.... I finally did learn to play the guitar and I learned these songs for real
Went to see Deep Purple at The world-famous Royal Albert Hall in West London with 5,000 others at this time though I thought 25 PENCE or 34 Cents was a bit steep to watch from "The Gods" haha
Yes, Lisa. I still vividly recall it and seeing Creedence Clearwater Revival soon after for the same 25 Pence....lol What this 66-year-old Londoner does not " vividly recall" is where the last 45 years + since have gone. One moment I'm around 20 years old and now 66 but I still play a mean Air Guitar. :)
Ian Gillan said "Deep Purple is an instrumental band with vocal accompaniment" I want to hear your Dad Jam it up to this. Todd get your Dad on hear, you will regret it if you dont"
Ok, you're hooked! Here's a list........... 'Burn', 'Mistreated', 'Fireball', Strange Kind Of Woman', 'Speed King', 'Bloodsucker', 'Demons Eye', 'Black Knight', 'Stormbringer', 'Lady Double Dealer', 'Woman From Tokyo'..... and there's the whole album of Machine Head !! First time listener, so don't know if you've already done Deep Purple. Typed this before i heard your outro... you obviously love this band. Edit: Kula Shaker did a great version of Hush btw
That's ironic too because Ritchie Blackmore said he thought Deep Purple in Rock was a better album. Funny how fans vs. the musicians themselves can have different outlooks.
Lee Micheals was a one hit wonder with; Do you know what I mean. However, he tears it up on the Hammond B3 with that old blues tune Stormy Monday. A must hear if you enjoy organs.
I'm curious if you have talked with your dad about some of these groups, if he's familiar with them, or if he isn't if you introduced him to them. Especially thinking of bands like this, or E.L.P., ya know, keyboard bands?
Awesome reaction, this is my favorite song on my favorite Deep Purple album. I suggest you check out the Fleetwood Mac version of "Black Magic Woman". Everyone is familiar with the Santana cover (which is amazing in its own right) but I think the Fleetwood Mac recording has its own unique vibe and Peter Green murders the solo.
Give a chance to later DP...songs like the Battle rages on, Anya, Ted the mechanic, Castle full of rascals, Rapture of the Deep, Vincent Price, All I got Is you, the surprising are great examples....and don't forget Speed king from live at the Nec 2002, the best version ever of that tune.
Chod, when you get a chance check out the Joe Bonamassa/Jimmy Barnes version of Lazy. Arlan Schierbaum doing the keyboards. It has Brad Whitford also on guitar and Anton Fig on drums. PHENOMENAL!!
One of my top 10 all time favorites. I had the Machine Head album back in the 70's, wore that sucker out.
Me too.
Every track a banger.
I was 18 when this was released, they sealed the deal for me and been a fanatic ever since.
Oh you said it, I got this album in the seventies, had it on vinyl, 8-track, later on cassette and CD and I still have my original album of it from long gone Appletree records in Spfld. Illinois.
Still do sometimes lol . My favorite album from the 70 s . Probably my all time

The entire album is a rock classic masterpiece. It is my favorite Deep Purple album, had it as a kid and I still listen to it today.
A brock are you from the uk ?
@@kevwoods6827 No, I was born in the US and I have never been to the UK. I just happened to like music from there.
THIS BECAME MY FAVORITE OFF THIS ALBUM... DEEP PURPLE, " LAZY "..."SPACE TRUCKING"...
This is a perfect rock/blues song. It hits all the right notes, instruments, tempo. It's perfect.
This incarnation of Deep Purple was as incredible. All iconic figures.
They're amazing live! Ian Paice on drums, just a phenomenal kick ass drummer
Ok... enough... I relived all my favorite Deep Purple songs... Hasta la Vista! 🖤🎹🎸🥁💣🤟

In Germany we call that "Spielfreude" = the joy of making music.
It's great !

You really need to hear the live version from "Made in Japan". That album has a few "best versions" on it.
Made in Japan was my first introduction to these songs. Studio versions were a bit of a letdown after that.
Agree 100%. The live version on that album is awesome too.
My first intro to Deep Purple was the live album Made in Japan. After hearing the live versions of their songs the studio albums, although great..... I bought them all....I always added the live versions to my playlist.
Yeah non better
Child in time guitar solo from MIJ Is the best solo fine by anyone...so Is highway star solo
Love this song! One of my other favorites by them is “my woman from Tokyo”
It's Woman from Tokyo, only in Usa the "my" Is added on the title.
You have to react to Ian Paice's solo from Deep Purple Made In Japan. Song called The Mule
One of my favorite albums and just maybe the best song on it. Highway Star is another epic song on this album that is probably responsible for millions of speeding tickets over the years.
Agreed!
Have you heard the live versions from made in Japan? They're even better.
@@wendylynn7058 it's their best live album for me, still love Machine Head best
If you are listening to Deep Purple , you need Space Truckin from the Made in Japan album !! Space Truckin... Space Truckin.... Space Truckin....... Made in Japan..
Yes, but the In Concert version is even better. It's savage.
Saw Deep Purple live twice in my younger days. They were Incredible live.
My favorite song from my favorite band.
Thankyou for the reaction. Enjoy
AH Deep Purple always in my top 5, just love them so much from the beginning.
Hush, Highway Star, Child in Time, When a Blind Man Cries.

These Deep Purple songs really need to be listened to on the Made in Japan album to get the best version, can't say that enough.

One of my all time favorite DP songs, great bluesy feel and a great jam all around.

"Highway Star" by Deep Purple. My favorite guitar lick of all time.....and Iv'e heard a ton of em
Jon Lord was classically trained, one of the early Deep Purple albums was Concerto for group and orchestra, a classical piece written by Jon Lord
Just an amazing nonstop rock in cut. You got to hear Joe Bonamass and Jimmy Barnes tribute with some of the master session players out there... cheers
space trucking is another gem. . .

Forgot to bow down to Roger Glover for driving this whole thing on bass. He was awesome.
He and Ian wrote those tracks
Still is.

Nobody can be in band instead Ritchie Blackmore!!!! Genius!!!!!
true, but I don't like that he kicked Roger out of the group and then Ian left too

This cassette occupied my car stereo almost a year in my gran torino, till the player ate it! 😄 when I wore a younger man's clothes!
Machine Head is their opus. Every true lover of rock had this album in their collection. And that intro? One of the greatest in rock 'n' roll.
That's ironic too because Ritchie Blackmore said he thought Deep Purple in Rock was a better album. Funny how fans vs. the musicians themselves can have different outlooks.
Have you checked out the 1972 Live version of Lazy? (Black and White in studio I believe.)
Seen them several times , thanks for the reaction
Lee Micheals was a one hit wonder with; Do you know what I mean. However, he tears it up on the Hammond B3 with that old blues tune Stormy Monday. A must hear if you enjoy organs.
I love how they sarcastically use a "lazy" standard song ending instead of finishing it off original style. Gotta love the bands humor there. :)
Ian Paice was KILLIN IT on drums! Thanks for doing this one! Machine Head is just a great album.
I'm curious if you have talked with your dad about some of these groups, if he's familiar with them, or if he isn't if you introduced him to them. Especially thinking of bands like this, or E.L.P., ya know, keyboard bands?
I always start with this when practicing my drums. Gets ya loose. You gotta check out the cover by Joe Bonamassa, too.

I wish from the bottom of my heart that you become a top musician
Don't forget "Knocking at your Back Door"
Super Groovy Man.
Very jazz, blues song
thats better than any hip hop iv'e ever heard and i like hip hop
Learning this entire album is essential for any drummer.
Run my students through it all the time
I was a HUGE Beatles fan in the 60's /// then I heard Deep Purple
Rat bat blue is another you've gotta check out. You won't be disappointed at how Lord tears it up. Yeah. Peace
Seemed like most lead singers could wield a harp to one degree or another back then.
English rock and blues band singers from that era
......not too many American singers

Since you are a drummer "Flight Of The Rat" from "In Rock" might be interesting. After all the decades I'm still amazed of what Ian Paice did there.
The like four minute and thirty second intro was awesome.

A couple of songs on the MachineHead album nearly cost me my drivers license in the 70s. Highway Star especially.
In a completely different direction, going back to Yes, Rick Wakeman plays a huge, old church organ on their song Parallels. It is awesome!
Rick absolutely loved Jon
Some times when you are talking about your father, I can't help but think of the song by Dan Fogelberg "Leader of the Band".
I play the Made In Japan version of this with David Byrne's Lazy song to get motivated to clean the house.
