Thanks for watching. As pointed out by a few viewers, it's 0.5%, not 5% as I incorrectly say twice in the video. The formula on the website is correct for 0.5% dilution. Thanks for pointing that out.
Regarding defence, we spell it that way in Canada - it means the same as defense.

in the early 60's I was an active Boy Scout. Bugs were eating us up. Told my Mother's Great Aunt about our insect problem. She suggested I take a sulfur tablet on the day before and on each day we camped. They were yellow, abt the size of a quarter, tasted bad, but worked GREAT. Best wishes to you on this Fathers Day.

Shawn, you should edit this video, twice you misspoke and said 5%. As you know the safe level is 0.5% You mentioned the correct mixing ratio (19/1) but I'm afraid people will mostly remember the 5% which is not safe. Happy fathers day!

How did the natives deal with it. The pathogen must have been around for thousands of years. Can people develop immunity to it?

    • @billob4285
      @billob4285 6 років тому

If caught early, the month long battery of antibiotics, and the side effects that come with them are a good trade off for getting rid of this.

Spectre Capital Management LLC limes disease is a man made disease. It escaped from a US research centre off the east coast of the USA. The natives never had to deal with it.

Richard clarke that's just a whacked out conspiracy theory as the pathogen has been traced back thousands of years.

Unfortunately, in most U.S. states it is illegal to do this. I tried to get the Virginia Department of Game and Fish to set up a cooperative program with rural land owners to let us set up permethrin applicators, but they weren't interested in even talking about it beyond threatening me with felony prosecution if I did it on my own.

I just want to let you know how satisfying I find your videos as well as your commitment to an authentic and meaningful life. Watching you work is mesmerizing and what you make, cabin, outdoor kitchen (even the little things like sawhorses and mortar hod) bring me a lot of vicarious enjoyment, and it all makes me think of the things that I create, which are on a tiny scale compared to you, but I try to commit myself to attention to detail and try to make my projects as good and as satisfying as I can. Although I am caught up in the rat race of commuting to and from Washington DC every day, I am happy that my work as a Park Ranger with the National Park Service is satisfying and provides a way to bring meaning and relevance to our history to thousands of visitors a year. I may not have built a cabin in the woods, but I have created my own spaces that provide me with quiet and comfort and a place for reflection and contentment. Thanks for showing all of us the way. So Important Shawn! I had to go to a Veteran's Hospital over multiple tick bites. One of which had it's head break off in my neck. Minor skin surgery and a special Antibiotic administered in the E.R. in a timely manner. No Lime contracted but I had quite a local reaction. On behalf of many, Thank You so much for this excellent detailed and very important Video. You just flat out Rock Shawn! As Always, Blessings from Oregon. ... Mike.

Shawn great video! Here in Massachusetts Lyme is a serious problem. When using deet I prefer applying to my hat or shirt. However, started using permethrin (Sawyer brand) several years ago. I use readily available spray bottles to apply. I have not had a tick on me when wearing treated clothing, but several when wearing untreated clothes. If using spray bottles apply in a well vented area. I use gloves, glasses, and respirator. Well worth the effort, as a few of my friends are Lyme positive and it's no fun! As you know, dogs need protection too and several options out there as well as daily grooming (they love that part)!

      standswithfish i know thankfully.
You would think living in an endemic area the docs would be able or atleast be familiar with the onslaught of symptoms in late stage lyme.
I had to diagnose myself and then go to the ER and lie to them saying i pulled a tic out of me an had the bullseye even though i dont remember ever being bitten and never had the rash .
Where i live in mass. South of boston there is no hunting allowed so its basically a safezone for the deer .. They're smart animals and they no exactly where to go to avoid being hunted .

Mahalo for spreading awareness about Lyme Disease. Back in 2015 I got bite from several ticks while outdoors living temporarily in Kansas and got Lyme Disease. It is very serious condition to have. It is painful , I am developing mild seizures and allergic to many antibiotics, foods and medicines , heart problems and much more from this awful disease. I believe a lot of people have it and do not even know it. For those who develop bulls eye rash , it is helps with finding if you have it. But in areas like Hawaii and Nevada where Lyme disease is not known. They are really uneducated. They will give you problems with giving you blood tests and not hear you out.
I am always concern for you and with Joe and Doug while you are outdoors. I am hearing that Canada is getting heavily affected with these infected ticks. Be safe and aloha to you.

Hi Shawn, As a veterinarian, I recommend Trifexis for Heartworm (mosquito, vector) as well as internal parasites, fleas. Preventic collar for Ticks. There are a number of newer medications for tick Prevention such as Nexgard but some dogs can have a bad reaction to this class of drug. I would recommend parasite prevention year round even in cold weather

Marks (formerly Marks work warehouse) just started selling permethrin treated clothing in Canada. It's under the WindRiver line and the tech is called "no fly zone". They spent years getting approval. Unlike other sprays, that might last up to 6 washings (I've used sawyers in the past), the treatment on WindRiver lasts 70 washings (lifetime of the garment).
I tried the shirt on a trip to Massassauga over the fathers day weekend and it was very effective against mosquitos.
Comes in men's and women's, nothing for kids yet.

Thank you Shawn, that was a good recipe. Two weeks ago I was on a short trip to Northern Finland and a way back we stopped at my friends' cabin and we stayed over night there. There are a lot of ticks so I was a little bit worried about ticks while I'm sleeping. But I had a king idea, and I was prepared, so I worn on my long johns on and socks over night, and I taped them together with a duct tape. No ticks found on the next morning. Mostly here, the ticks which might have lyme disease, those are at the coast area, not so usual at inland. But the fact is that ticks are every year more and more..

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! Thank you for the information. I don't like chemicals either, but it's about balance, even with my dog. Chemicals -vs- likelihood of the disease -vs- the disease itself. I keep myself as healthy as I can and I use natural products (love essential oils), but tick diseases can cause many health complications and are becoming so prevalent. With my dog(s), i started using an internal product last year plus topical essential oil spray for their comfort. Can't wait to see the next outdoor kitchen video. Enjoy your special day.

The deer and horse flies are absolutely horrible in the fact that their bites seem to take a chunk of flesh with them.
I am in Barrie, the gateway to cottage country and ticks have been becoming an issue here over the last few years.
My dad, born and raised in Newfoundland said his dad would hang a length of oakem used to seal joints in wooden boats soaked in something (probably something known to cause cancer in California) around his neck to keep the black flies away.
When I was cutting my firewood near Huntsville I tried to keep the chainsaw running since it kept the bugs away and that was usually in October on Thanksgiving weekend.

I contracted lyme in Georgian Bay in the 1980's when I was a child. My family thought it was a spider bite. Big bulls eye rash on elbow. I was sick on and off I'll but not bedridden. I was bitten again in Barrie, Ontario in 2004.....tiny, tiny tick embedded on my knee but of course tested negative here in Canada (useless test for diagnostic purposes) and written off as having fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. No bullseye rash, just a big splotch of red. I had to leave my elementary teaching job in 2004 and just 3 years ago I was finally diagnosed in the USA with Lyme and coinfections. Sold my house and car to try and pay for treatment in US. It's a nightmare for Canadians.... animals included. Please be vigilant everyone and stay safe. It really ruins lives and families.
Thanks Shawn, Lyme has been here for decades in some concentrations ( migratory bird pathways) but getting much more prevalent for sure. It's freaking me out!!!
If you do get bitten, you need at least 30 days of antibiotics and 60 days is better. Do NOT settle for two weeks.

Shawn, there is good news regarding Permethrin . As of January 19, 2018 Health Canada is re-evaluating it's risk assessments of Permethrin. It is also open to comments from the public in response to PRVD2017-18. To the best of my knowledge, the consultation period is still ongoing. In the meantime, Picaridin, also called Icaridin is available for use in Canada and is considered far more effective against mosquitoes and ticks than any DEET product. All available information indicates it is also safe for dogs but NOT for CATS. The product has a 12 hour duration rating. Health Canada re-evaluation info is available via google search under subject health canada services consumer product - safety pesticides pest management public consultations proposed re-evaluation.

for your own homestead you can spray for ticks for a distance around your home. there is also a tablet you can feed cali once a month that keeps ticks and fleas off of her. that way she can swim to her hearts content.

Dear Shawn, just bumped into your channel very recently, but watching as many vids as i can right now. In my opinion you are working towards life as it should be, you have a great attitude, mentality and vision in combination with great awareness of yourself and the environment around you. This way of living beats the current short-term, greedy and superficial lifestyle a growing amount of people looks up to anyday. I wish to do something similar in the future as well in Norway or perhaps Canada if possible. Keep up the good work! Lots of respect from the Netherlands 💪

Eating tons of garlic will also help keep the biters away. I have found that most bugs don't care for it when you start to sweat it out. Of course it may also keep people away too but for where you are that shouldn't matter much. Blessings!

I very much appreciate your efforts to educate folks and to motivate them to be successful. I have about a thousand questions but I'll get caught up on your series and probably most will be answered. The two that are bugging me just now are these: Why did you cut the overhanging logs off the front? They looked ideal for a porch roof, and second: Why did you build only 10 feet wide? Thanks and keep up the great work.

Ticks are an ever increasing problem in Switzerland too. We have a mobile app (for android and IOS) to help raise awareness and showing the location of recent sighting and bites. I am told by older generations that less than 3 decades ago ticks were not a problem. The diseases they carry are horrendous resulting in widespread vaccinations for Tick-borne encephalitis in Austria (mandatory?) and optional in Switzerland. Some of diseases transmitted from ticks (Powassan Virus) are potentially fatal, doctors in France recently discovered a new one that is fatal, most are life changing.

Thats true Loki, in Austria its mandatory. The far more worse infection you can gat is encenphalitis. Its game over. But i never ever heard of someone, covering himself in a cancerogen toxic to avoid to be bitten. Never. We just observ the whole body, like apes :-) when we're back from the woods. Take the tik out if you find one. In Austria its common knowledge how to deal with this buggers. And while lyme disease is surley not the end of the world, comparing to the encephalitis. So...get yourself covered, search yourself or another and get yourself a vaccination!

We do not take dogs for a long time, it's very dangerous.

It repels flies, mosquitoes, gnats, fleas and ticks (plus it smells good!). Seems to work better for her than whatever we use for ourselves. 🙄 It's all natural and I think it would be great for Cali since it works even after some rain/swimming.

You might want to try an olive oil and lavender mix. A ten to one mix works well here in Australia. We have all those nasty species here as well. Its cheap, effective, and a healthy option. I would buy a 250ml bottle of olive oil and mix 15ml of pure valender oil into it.
Rub on exposed skin and you are good for 6 to 8 hours.

I live in the ozarks and ticks are really bad here. I use the Sawyer brand permethrin on my clothes, shoes, etc. It comes in a ready made spray bottle and is intended for clothes. I also use permethrin SFR around my home on bushes and the tree line. As for my dogs, I use Petarmor drops on them and you also use rose-geranium essential oil to repel the ticks. Humans can also benefit form the rose-germanium oil.

I don't know if you know, but for your dog you can mix 3/4 cup organic apple cider to 2 cups water. Put it in a spray bottle and spray the dog with a light coat of it(watch the eyes tho), but it helps with the fly's, ticks, and skeeters. People here in Michigan and the UP Michigan use it on pet's and cattle

    Hi Shawn,
Have you considered giving Callie a Lyme disease vaccine?
Many people starting to go that direction here in the states.
Also I use,a product called Bravecto on my dogs.
3 months protection on some varieties of ticks.
4 months or longer flea prevention.
Please be careful with the pyretherin. If you sweat it can leach from the fabric. You can absorb it into your skin.
    Want you to be safe.

For Cali you can use a flea and tick collar. They are a white color and have some chemical in them that repels fleas and ticks. I use them for my hounds and they work great. If you ever notice a flea or tick on Cali, just give her a wash with Anti- flea and tick shampoo.

Great stuff to know Shawn, the mosquitos are terrible here and the blackflies are terrible in the Gowganda area south of here. I haven't been in the bush for years, but when I was younger, my buddies and I used to do roughing it camping. Personally when I was grubby and my body had the smoke smell on my body, the flies weren't as bad, and being perpetually drunk on cheap wine helped too. lol

You can spray the entire perimeter inside and out creating a barrier to reppell...Including the perimeter of windows, utility poles, vents, and doors inside and out...Ants, ticks, fleas, spiders, chiggers, termites, and frankly any other crawling insects that I can think of will not cross to enter your home. You and Callie can carry the insects across the barrier meaning any that hitch a ride on Callie or you will be trapped inside the home or tent. You can dilute further and spray the entire floor to deal with them. Also you can dilute it even further and spray your yard and pathways when you have guest for a temporary reprieve. I suggest "spraying" the inside of your boots or shoes and just the outside showing of socks, and just spraying the outside of layers instead of soaking...It works just as well but helps limit skin exposure for peace of mind. With some clothing it is only needed to spray perimeter of entry points just like a home.

I heard from old timers that they spray fruit plants with Permethrin and they are ok to eat in a few days.
I have used it for ground fleas in a house we used to live in.
45 years of being out and about, never had a tick till last week. little bugger was on my lower leg, didn't notice it till the next day.
we have similar clothing for fishing here, I hate putting insect repellent / sun cream on. so I wear long light clothing when hot and out doors, long and think in cooler times. in saying that your spring / summer is like our autumn / winter temp wise.

Hi. I live in a tropical area in northern South Africa. Same problems. Just be careful, long term exposure to Pyrethran can cause Pyrethran poisoning. The simptoms are the same as severe flu (as is tick bite fever) We also have a problem with malaria. Rubbing your body with lavender and Khakibos (Tagetes minuta) helps. "Catmint (In a study at Iowa State University, researchers found that the essential oil in catnip, nepetalactone, is 10 times more effective than DEET, the chemical used in most insect repellents)" Also helps a lot if you plant Lavender, Rosemary and Marigolds around your house.

For ticks, I think a nice pair of underwear, hat, and socks are important. Also just check yourself all the time. I saw tick warnings everywhere last year so I was aware of the risk. First hike I went on in early April I came home to find a tick on my socks. For mosquitoes pants with a longs sleeve shirt. Not always fun in the heat. For an off grid cabin the only thing I can think of is to make sure to pick up as many leaves off the ground as possible. Try to not have any dirt or holes to collect water. Leaves rot while holding water then make a nasty swamp compost.

Thank you very much for the information! I have not heard about permethrin before.

  • @LuckySawdust
    @LuckySawdust 6 років тому

I've used the same formulation to treat my clothing with good results, both in Nicaragua, and the US Mid-Atlantic region.
The first time I came across permethrin was when I was in Nicaragua -- I treated my clothing with it regularly, and was able to avoid getting Dengue Fever as a result. In the US Mid-Atlantic, we've got mosquitoes and ticks along with other small biting insects... and when I treated my clothing with permethrin, the *only* ticks I found were dead ones that were in the bottom of my boots. It definitely works.
Here in the US, you can buy pre-formulated permethrin that is supposedly specially formulated to treat clothing (as opposed to the commercial/agricultural grade stuff, which you and I bought). Sawyer's is the brand, and you can usually find it at Walmart, or through Amazon.
The one thing I've been unable to find out, is if there really is any meaningful difference in the way that the 'Sawyer's' permethrin is formulated, versus the commercial / agricultural formulation -- I've seen unverifiable reports that Sawyer's formulation is designed with binders that keep the permethrin in the cloth fibers... and that those are not in the other formulations (supposedly increasing the risk of absorption of the permethrin through the skin) -- but can find no *definitive* information one way or another.
If anyone has any authoritative/definitive information on that, I think we'd all benefit from seeing it!
