That still gets my juices flowing. That moment right there, was, as a 36 year old, my "this f#*king horse is going to win the triple crown" moment. I felt it more than Smarty Jones, and I'll have another was battling starting from the San Felipe on in, losing to Creative Cause if I am not mistaken in both SA Graded stakes prep races, so it was a coin flip there as well. California Chrome too was not a "dominant" type horse. Big Brown was IT, man that just hurts a little to watch. That moment right there was the high point of that season, the "Heeeerre we go" moment. This year I think is going to be tight. We'll see hopefully some of the heavyweights drop out of the Preakness and we have the same setup for Belmont, with Khozan coming in and drilling them all. My derby prediction, for what it's worth(a hill of beans) is 8, 2, 18, 6 Dortmund, Carpe Diem, American Pharoah, Mubtaahij. Materiality will be the wild card IMO, I see him finishing 5th but I certainly wouldn't scoff if I heard you had him to win. CAN'T WAIT!!!

He beat Creative Cause in the Santa Anita Derby. Creative Causes only prep win was the San Felipe and he beat Bodemeister, not I'll Have Another.

You got it all wrong. It's about seeing a beautiful champion, a Michael Jordan of horses be able to play at his greatest. That's what this moment was about, the excitement. Not the betting. You think these guys cared at all about cashing in tickets? Is that what you really took away from their reactions? If so I am truly sorry.

Hope the guy on the right, a champion lout, lost his shirt three weeks later in the Belmont Stakes when BB didn't even finish the race. A wonderful day indeed, with the whole thing quite predictable. $15,000,000 in win bets on BB vaporized, and the downfall of trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., who ended up bankrupt, had begun.

From the perspective of TV networks who show races, such as TVG and NBC for the Triple Crown, it's ideal for the Belmont to have a horse that's won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Means more people watching on TV, more people betting the race, more money bet on the race, and more being made from advertising slots. Big Brown winning the Preakness ensured that the Belmont would have high ratings.

It was one of those moves that you almost never see. He was pretty much under a hammerlock and exploded when the other riders were scrubbing. Every trainer in the race had the opportunity to provide the same nutrients to his/her horse, so, you have to give him credit. I still think he is an under-rated horse and gets a bad rap, but did Kent D. really need to look back more than once?

+tizfrreecharm Absolutely! This is what horse racing is about! Ever been to a grandstand at a race track?? This is how bettors really talk during a race! Horse racing isnt about crumpets, tea and fashion parades, There is no feeling in the world when you are alive in a Pick 4 in the last leg and your single is romping home to victory. At that moment all inhibitions let loose. Exhibit A is this video.

The horse was 1/5! You think you had a 99-1 winner here or something. Yes the horse looked impressive here, but 3 weeks later was eased in the Belmont. And he was calling him Man O’ War- I just have to laugh. Makes you wonder if this horse was “juiced,” and the bottomed fell out at Belmont. Trainer of the horse had a poor reputation & was known for shady practices.

A right hind shoe came lose during the running, but as the vet Greg Bennett remarked, “I don’t know how much of a factor that was.” He went on to remark sometimes after a race a horse feels it and are sore, but I’m not “aware of that with Big Brown.” But he didn’t lose almost lose a hoof.
