  • When Vince stops singing, his Telecaster takes over. Gill was a big part of keeping the Telecaster front and center during the 90s, Country Music's most popular era. Besides covering some of his history and gear, I also showcase some Vince-isms that are an indelible part of his playing style.

    Vince is one player that does something we all strive for but seldom ever do. He gets out what’s in his heart through his hands. And what’s always been astounding to me is he does it every time he plays.

    Mr. Vince Gill doesn’t get mentioned often when discussing the pantheon of guitar heroes, like many of the other fine players you have talked about. He always plays in a manner that supports the song, like many of the other players you have talked about. I see a pattern here! Thanks for shining a light on these wonderful, MUSICAL players.

      Yeah, those who tend to make these lists of the guitar greats, seem to overlook country pickers for some reason alot of the time. They are really missing out on so many greats, that they just aren't exposing themselves to!

    Ill never forget....the first country gig i ever got was with a group here in New Mexico. The audition was Oklahoma Borderline. I butchered it completely, but got the gig. Played at a place called Blue Jeans every Friday and Saturday all summer. I grew as a player leaps and bounds that summer. Thank you Vince Gill, and thanks Zac.

    I saw Vince with the Time Jumpers at a Country/Bluegrass extravaganza in Portland, OR several years ago. One of the few times he took this band out of Nashville I believe. I was in a breakout session in a hotel meeting room to listen to Guy Clark play and talk about his music. The room was nearly full and I was in the back row with one of the few empty seats next to me. Suddenly Vince Gill sat down next to me. He smiled a big smile and said, hey buddy, and then turned his attention to Guy. He was clearly there in appreciation of Guy Clark (what a great songwriter) but part way into the show he noticed a lady standing by the door, got up and offered her his seat. I'd always heard what a gentleman he is, but that really struck me. No pretense or entitlement whatsoever. Just a guy who never lost his humanity despite becoming one of the most sought after singers, songwriters, and players ever to grace our planet.

    The night before Eric Clapton's Guitar Festival outside of Chicago ( 2009 I believe...) a band slipped into a small club called Martyr's in Chicago for an impromptu set. I noticed a tiny ad in the Chicago Reader announcing the show for that same night. It was Albert Lee and Hogan's Heroes, Vince Gill, James Burton, and Ricky Skaggs. The opener was Bobby Cochran, nephew of Eddie Cochran. I was lucky enough to reserve tickets and watched all of these guys load in the front door while we were in line! Needless to say, an incredible show. Hogan's heroes were the perfect backing band as they were all great players. Ricky Skaggs played acoustic the whole night and had no trouble holding his own. Albert and James were incredible as usual but I have to say, Vince, for me at least, stole the show. He used his old white blond Blackguard through 2 Rivera amps, arranged in a sort of "V" formation and his tone was incredible: Round, fat, and dynamic. The best thing was that they were all having a ton of fun and this really came through to the standing room only, sweaty, and tipsy audience. An unforgettable night.

    Back in the early 90s, I was over at TNN to have Ralph Emery read a TV spot for Opryland Hotel before a taping of "Nashville Now." Vince Gill and his band were running through a dress rehearsal of "Liza Jane" before Ralph came onto the set. I was just feet away from Vince and his band and was blown away when Vince went effortlessly from lead vocal to to lead guitar break. I had heard the single, but I had no ideal he was as accomplished of a guitar picker as he was a singer. Truly spectacular to see up close and personal.

    In the mid-70s, I bought the first two Pure Prairie League albums. In 1982, I cam across their new album "Something In the Night" and I was immediately struck by the talent of Vince Gill. I can remember thinking that he appeared to have real all round talent and was a name to remember. By the late 80s, he was becoming a big star and has remained one since.

    I love to see Vince get the credit he deserves, as an incredible guitar player and singer. But, you're no slouch yourself. I would have loved to have had some of the experiences you have lived. You have been around the best. Your insight is invaluable, and the number of subscribers you have will continue to grow, as we seek valuable information. I am 69 years old and have been playing since I was 11. My guitar teacher idolized Chet Atkins, and I missed out on so much important learning from him, because I wanted to move on to Rock, and Chet just wasn't my thing. The idiocy of youth. If only I could go back. Of course, Vince caught my attention with Go Rest High, and then I went back and started listening to everything he did, and recognize a Master. Thanks for everything Zac!

    Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on that Mountain” and the ”High and Lonesome Sound” are an incredible testament to his voice, but he is a great guitarist, both acoustic and electric. Personally, his Strat playing is what I’ve heard the most... sweet. I’d love to hear him cover a Steve Young record... or two! :)

    My introduction to Vince Gill came through his appearances on the Crossroads Guitar Festival videos. I knew who he was, of course, but I wasn't very much into country music - most of what I heard was the glitzy, sappy "Opry" stuff.

    I'll be honest, after growing up with classic rock and hair metal, when my dad went to listening to country in the 90's, it felt like torture having to listen to his radio in the car. As I've gotten older, I've learned to appreciate it more, especially with your videos. I will say, in the time Vince Gill and Dwight Yoakam were some of the only musicians I didn't mind hearing because I knew they could play.

    Saw Vince several years back in Santa Rosa and I knew I would love the concert but I was blown away. He puts on an absolute stellar show. and great musicians, too. I remember when I first started learning guitar (Tele) several years back and watching the 2004 Crossroads and he nailed that Oklahoma Borderline solo at the end, I was hooked. and it's been a fun ride ever since. I got influenced at that time by Vince, Albert Collins, Roy Buchanan, and Guthrie Trapp. Enough music there to analyze for a long time.

    I’ve been a Vince Gill fan for a LONG time. Met him after a concert in Newfoundland back in 2011. Great guy, very loyal to his fans. Guitar player extraordinaire and a voice to match. I have Austin City Limits shows of him including an Episode early in his career where he was backing guitar and vocals for Rosanne Cash. And as we know he is now part of the Eagles since Glenn Frey’s passing. He uses Little Walter amps a lot these days. He has influenced me greatly. And yes I have got down that great solo on Take Your Memory With You. So glad you did this episode.

    As a retired public school music teacher (gr. 6-12), I was always asked what was the most important part of your instrument.....my standard answer (way back from my music school days) was: Your ears. So, it wasn't really ON the instrument. I took that as "Listening" was most important. Yes Zac, I am a new addict to your YT channel. Keep up the good work Brother. .....Russell D.

    I always describe Vince Gill as “Mr Smooth” when he soloes. On “Clusterpluck”, his tone and smoothness are evident with all those other players to contrast with. It’s sort of cool to see how all of these 80’s guys have become the more “senior statesmen” of the instrument.

    Another stellar lesson in the way only Zac can deliver them. Perfectly conceived and brilliantly presented with honest appreciation for one of the great guitar players of our time. I love the way Zac highlights some of the style and tone trademarks that make Vince so recognizable. I bought a Little Walter about a year ago. A great lead amp of course, but also a secret weapon for anyone who wants warm but clean tone as a rhythm player in a smallish sized amp. Love it.

I've been following Vince since he joined Pure Prairie League and have pretty much every recording he's done since. His live shows are always funny and low key but the music with his killer band is always spot on. For many years he was under rated given his immense talent but his long list of awards and his body of work speaks for itself these days.

Big Al Anderson - now there is a Tele player that is unfamiliar to a lot of people. I'll have to see if there are any videos of them playing together. Jeff White also played in Vince's band for many years singing harmony and playing acoustic. Jeff can rip on a Tele too - I saw him often playing in Indiana. Thanks Zac!

He is singing that high, ubiquitous harmony...and no one is really paying him any attention until he unleashes the beast at the end. Zac Brown seems to have a "What the hell is this?" look. Not a flashy solo, but tone expertly executed...as usual.

    Vince is great. I have more troubles with Vince’s style then guys like Brad Paisley. Vince’s solos always seem melody based where guys like Brad seem moveable pattern based. I don’t know if that makes any sense. Vince taught me to turn the treble down on the Tele by about 30 %. Vince says he got that from Roy Nichols.

    Great video, Zack! Looking at Vince's gear I understand just how modest the man is not only as a person, but also gear-wise) One thing has caught my eye though - why would he need THREE delay pedals on the board? I'm really curious

    This new thing they call country to be isnt country . Years Back Recording was the complete Band together
    Not sepparaited in 4 or 5 cubicals.
    Its got no feeling no Grove . You know what I mean . That tone pot for the bridge pickup replace it with a volume control . Then test it out with the compressor .
    Vince is one artist

    Hey Zac. I love your videos. Thanks for doing them. I bought the Seymour Duncan La Brea pickups (partly because of your video) to put in my Fender Nashville Dexluxe B-Bender. I'm somewhat new to replacing pickups, so I didn't know that the La Breas wouldn't work with my Nashville (middle Texas Special) setup. I've worked with Seymour Duncan to try to resolve this, but with no luck. Do you have any recommendations for how I could get the La Breas to work in a Nashville setup? Thanks!

      Are they out of phase? What is the issue?

    • @KennyCarlile
      @KennyCarlile 3 роки тому

      @@AskZac Thanks for the reply! :) Yeah, I think that's the issue. SD told me that the bridge and neck are meant to be opposite so they are, but with the middle pickup, I don't get neck and bridge hum canceling. Instead, in positions 2 and 4, I get a really thin sound that seems out of phase. However, if neck and bridge are opposite, I would think that either 2 or 4 would be fine, but both sound thin.

    • @AskZac
      @AskZac  3 роки тому

      Then to use the set, you may have to buy another middle pickup that will match with the set. I would have tried flipping the wires on the middle pickup.

      @@AskZac thank you!! I have been struggling a little playing country tele……. When I use a compressor it seems like the volume roll-off doesn’t work as well as it does if I am just using an overdrive. Trying to get modern country tones. Also - Vince gills sound is so smooth, even with tone rolled off, I feel like there is a little harsh bite when I play, but I suppose it is subjective.
