Absolutely stunning Cam! The white against the natural wood really works well. All kinds of colours would work. It all depends on the individual. Cheers from TO!
I got a lot out the serving board and cutting board video because this is how I am starting out. The smaller scale makes it easier to get going and I can sell these at my local hardware store.
Thanks for the warning about the painter’s tape, and the better method you have decide on, which is packing tape & mold release on top of the packing tape. Good idea. As long as you’re asking The white color you picked is perfect! As long as you’re asking for comments, the 22 degree edging I think is too dramatic. I think a more subtle degree would take away less attention to the beautiful piece you’ve made.
Hey Cam, that white against the dark Walnut is really nice. As I was watching, I was thinking about your drink coaster project and how cool that would look as a coaster! Very nice job, once again.
I am seeing various views on cutting and serving boards made with epoxy. I see you are ok with that, how did you come to that conclusion? and what things should be considered when selling to a client
Amazing video! I live in the Portland area, and I have been looking at your products for a long time now.. Hoping to one day afford a couple pieces, or make my own! Thanks for the great content!
@@BlacktailStudio I have multiple friends who have big pieces of wood available whenever I am ready as well. Do you only work with your own inventory of wood, or would you take a piece for the project?
PenneyKid13 it’s not ideal to take outside wood. Mainly for the client. No way to know if it was dried properly or has bugs inside that will crawl out in a year. So I advise against it, but will do it without any type of warranty. If that makes sense.
Looks pretty good! I personally am not a fan of the milky white color. Perhaps a clear dark maroon or something similar that matches the wood better and allows a perfect view of that natural edge.
Loved the white epoxy round table and was supper happy to find these too. I'm working on a game board with white epoxy and live edge birch cookie slab about 1,5 inches thick and 17 by 19 inches rectangle. (2/3 wood in one piece and 1/3 epoxy in one piece). I was surprised to see this thin design with cast epoxy so wanted to ask about that.. Is the adhesion between the wood and the epoxy really strong enough to keep it in one piece or should I consider some kind of a bow tie or a sneaky cast mortise and tenon? When using a bow tie would it also make sense to inlay the wood-attached part first and cast the epoxy after that? Thank you for the videos. Awesome content!
can you recommend where to go to buy some walnut burl? if you have a specific name that would help. also, why liquid and not a mica powder? do you have a preference , and what dictates weather you use mica or liquid? (i ask because i love the way the white came out, i bought a mica white from blackdiamonds and not sure if itll come out looking the same as liquid)... lastly, do you remember approximately what the beginning thickness of this was?( i ask because when buying im always not sure if its not thick enough or too thick as ive never made anything yet lol). Thank you.
Man...you blow me away with your imagination and technique. Totally in awe. You mentioned a link to a video showing how you made the hold down clamps that fit through the dog holes in your bench...did I miss it or have you not had the opportunity to put it up yet? Thanks
thats beautiful. hey man, i did some lichtenberg burns on a flintlock pistol frame and ive been filling them in with some cool colored epoxy.. the fills are coming out very nice although tricky on a curvy circular surface haha. once its finished i plan to stain the wood a dark grey-black color leaving the bright blue lightening strikes. how would you finish something like that? would i do a spray on lacquer or spray on polyurethane? i want to give it a vibrant look but not too glossy
@@BlacktailStudio hmm, well i dont want it to be too shiny.. i just would like the epoxy to be vibrant. i looked on odies oil's instagram and it looks like the finish is used on similar stuff with good results.. but its also something that gets handled often so im not sure if an oil finish would wear out? is that a thing? maybe ill try that
@@BlacktailStudio i got their little oil/butter/wax kit.. figure ill give it an honest shot. looks pretty good, good reviews, seems to shine more with the oil-butter-wax coating. any experience with the 3?
Hi! This may be a silly question but does it matter if you place your surface face up or down in the mold? I have two different thickness boards I'm looking to use in a epoxy table so the surface would have to be placed downwards
Neat! I've been watching your videos for a while now. I've never seen this one before. I was thinking about doing a set of cutting boards, maybe 8-10 of them, give them to the siblings and family if they turn out well. I really want to do a table, but I figured cutting boards was a chance to make some mistakes on the small project first, maybe learn something. Ever done some cutting boards?
I’m interested in making a charcuterie board as a gift for a friend. You mentioned woodworking Portland for their planer? Is it an expensive service? I don’t have a planer and it seems to be a crucial step from your video and others I’ve watched. Any tips for alternative/beginner options?
I noticed you using the festool sanding discs that are designed specifically to be used with plastics/epoxy/etc. I just recently purchased some, and was very disappointed, they would gum up very quickly with epoxy dust, and I am constantly trying to clean them. How have you found these sanding discs?
I have attempted to put different type of oils (food safe), on epoxy pieces (most of epoxy, small amounts of wood exposed), and have never been able to do it effectively. I find that the oil never seems to dry. I noticed you sanded only up to 400 grit, do you find this better for the absorption of the oil?
Cool video! Would the finish that you used work for a cutting board? Or is the constant use of a knife on it going damage it until the point were is no longer food safe? In other words, what would you recommend for a food safe cutting board ? Great videos I really enjoy your work!
Love this project, I've always loved the look with the white epoxy. Great project and now all I want to do is find a project do this on. I do have two questions if you don't mind. One, what dye do you use? And second, I've had trouble in the past with epoxy dye bleeding into the wood especially with open grain like oak. How would you prevent this? I know you can seal the edges when you have access to them like you do here, but if you're filling knots or cracks how do you stop the color from seeping into the wood? Thanks so much!!
Hello there, are there any other suitable (more budget type) materials than melamine for making the moulds? Also, if anyone watching in the UK might know, would silicone WD40 be an ok applicant on the bottom to stop it sticking to the mould? Or would even baking paper do the job? Many thanks from a keen (but total) epoxy novice.
I'm stealing ideas! Have you tried using a pad sander to "vibrate the mixed epoxy before pouring? It seemed to both reduce the bubbles and improve the setup when I did it with the 2 or 3 things that I have done... Really like what I've seen here.
I have a crazy question....I made an epoxy table from your videos for my husband for Christmas. It came out amazing, thanks for your awesome videos and blog. However, long story short I totally didn't think about what I was going to do with the extra epoxy. It's just a big chunk right now. Can you cut epoxy slices? Like if I took a saw to the big chunk, can I just slice off some of it?
Any concerns with using epoxy for something that comes in contact with food? Just curious, I’ve seen other people’s say you shouldn’t use it. What are your thoughts?

I dunno. Big Melamine sheets are only around $30 in the US. You can add house wrap tape to another substrate if you have stuff ready to use.
I don't know about silicone WD40 in particular, but you can try vaseline+naphta mix, of some soft homemade furniture wax

60-10” 👍🏼
