Craig Burley is exactly right. Gareth Southgate is afraid to make adjustments and that holds England back. When I see England play I always have the feeling that there is no "plan B" if things don't go right and that is because Southgate is not a football manager, he is an accountant.
You are still missing the wider point lad. This isn't just a Southgate problem, it's an English problem.
I've heard the English think up creative excuses for years now. They include:
- the English press (woopty doo)
- the club tribalism in camp and 'lack of unity' (I refer to Spain 2010)
- the itensity of the English football calendar is draining (nonsense)
England needs to wake up and realise that, culturally, it is problem focused rather than solution focused. As Burley says, Spain would just stick Rice and Bellingham in there and figure it out. England, however, catastrophise about what could go wrong and overthink everything.
It has far less to do with Southgate than the English realise, he's just a symptom rather than the problem.
@nichobee Facts. The english mentality is safe, reserved and orderly. Thats how we are as a nation. How can that not translate to how we play football? We cant rely on the flair and different styles that foreign players and managers brought to the premier league.

-Kane at this stage of his career needs runners on both sides of him

It's just gross incompetence, the squad he chose is unbalanced and have no way of playing on the ball. This will be Southgate's last tournament and the poorest finish under his time.

Englands problem is trying to fit players in just because they might be very good e.g Foden. Foden is not a winger. Start eze or gordon. They have pace. Need the pacey wingers if playing with kane upfront. Kane is slow but can create and score. Foden is coming from left into central areas and Kane is also dropping into central area lol. Dumb stuff.
Foden should be a good enough player to find spaces and areas to work. Do you think Southgate tells Foden to just stick to the touchline like it's a table football game from the 80s...

The problem is that the lion’s share of the squad play in a farmer’s league. Kane and Bellingham, the only two to play in proper leagues, are the only players to score. You need actual domestic competition to build a team with any heart.

The fact is, the current England squad is a proverbial golden generation and is being wasted. Any manager could get to quarters and semis with them. In the past tournaments, our run of games with Southgate have been easy to get to the later stages because the teams were generally easy compared to other groups. When we come up against, Spain, Italy, Croatia, France, now Germany, Belgium, Portugal, any other big dogs, guarantee we get spanked 3-0.
The problem is Southgate and I for one have disliked him since his appointment. Regretfully he got far in a couple of tournaments because that gave him job security and has made him “untouchable” to the FA, when he needs to go. If the manager is shite, we just have to admit it, not pretend it’s not happening. The exact same in club football. I’m a Villa fan and hated it when Gerrard was running the show before Émeri, that didn’t mean I wasn’t a fan, I just thought the manager needed to go, and he eventually did, and got replaced by a good manager, and now Villa are in champions league. If Southgate gets the boot and the FA recruit someone who isn’t tactically incompetent, we will have a lot more silverware for our trophy stand.

Kyle Walker's interview after the game showed it all. It was as if he knew what would be asked, and you could see the pressure he felt and pressure for his coach.

Rice is out of form, but is never a true DM (ask Arteta and witness his addition of Partey to stablise and free Rice). Bellingham is our best 10. Foden should be on the bench until needed. Play Wharton, Rice and Bellingham in midfield.

He was the same as a player .I remember him well unfortunately.These England players play for big clubs for big money under top managers and did not put in the work rate they are capable of .Team selection is not balanced in midfield .Too many of the same type of offensive players .

Every major tournament, England score once, and then stop playing. They stop connecting on passes and movement to beat the press, they stop pressuring the ball, and they😢 sit in a deep block, letting the opponent build themselves into games and gain their confidence. How are Bellingham and Foden not bossing these games more? Why is TAA not having any impact on these games from the midfield and yet still starting? It's remarkable how useless their midfield has been so far. Why do England just start booting the ball hopefully upfield, putting all the pressure on their star players to just "make something happen" as opposed to having a plan of attack and putting players in position to help their teammates. England never play as more than the sum of their parts, and that's completely down to Southgate's tactics.

Australia found a way to beat Denmark in the last World Cup. They did it with players from the lower leagues in England, the SPL, a few players in lower continental leagues and local A-League players. Not one of these would get into the England squad. Every one of the England squad would get into the Australian squad.
They did it because they go out there filled with passion and pride. England go out there with a head full of numbers and fancy patterns. And a coach who is an intellectual.
