My father was there for the rescue. US PT Boats of squadron 30 out of Cherbourg were dispatched for the rescue. They (PT 460) saved 6 from the 66th Panther division. Christmas morning 600+ dead American soldiers were piled like cordwood on the docks. My father silently mourned for those men every Christmas eve for the rest of his life. He never forgot that horrible Christmas eve. God bless the 66th Panther division. Watch " The Last Christmas ( of WWII)" from ZDF German television.😔🇺🇸

My Dad was in the 66th was onboard another ship in the transport group. They heard all the commotion (depth charges, etc), but didn’t know what occurred until later after docking in Cherbourg. He also mourned every Christmas. Thank you for the view from your fathers’ side as a rescuer.

I know Clive Cussler (RIP) was the one with the information that located the Leopoldville. Matter of fact, its part of why he was persona non grata in france. I suspect the potato gunning of a french destroyer may be part of that.
