Jupiter is one of my favorites,, I love how she's very "girly", but also very strong and confident. She's beautiful and such a great friend.
I took Jupiter as the more tomboyish of the Scouts like Uranus.

Yes.... both of them actually kinda suck. Crystal Chibiusa literally KISSED her future dad and tried to take him to rule with her. But the. Crystal chibiusa was MUCH more of an asshole and was a huge suck up to Mamoru

My biggest Complaint in regards to Mercury's powers is that everyone often says her abilities are the weakest out of the inners. However her attacks to me come across more as more defensive than offensive. Heck apart from MiniMoon's Pink Sugar Heart Attack in the 90's anime Mercury is the only Senshi that's defensive.
I love this point because it's true. Like in any fighting game where you set up a team there always has to be a defensive members. That's Mercury!

Moon is a glass canon
Jupiter is a tank
Mar is long range
Venus is short range

I think it’s easy to dismiss her as weak when she attacks with bubbles and her water based attacks are limited whereas when neptune was introduced she seemed like the better options and stronger of the two because she had free reign of the ocean/sea. It’s clear mercury was meant to be more powerful in smarts than strength

Jupiter Oak Evolution is a reference to the god Jupiter whose sacred tree was the Oak.
Oak evolution is because her element should be wood, and she had lightning powers because she's Jupiter
She liked volleyball in the manga too. She even joined a volleyball team and club

For that one scene with Mina and Rei:
It was already established in Sailor V that none of Mina’s loves will ever work out, leaving her free of the conflict of pursuing love or fulfilling her duty because her duty IS her love.
And in the Nightmare arc of the manga when Rei was caught in the mirrors, she said that she had vowed her chastity to her duty as a Sailor Senshi.
So, while they were joking around waiting for the Sailor Star Lights on the roof, they weren’t REALLY serious about getting boyfriends. More like half-heartedly wishing to experience some more normal school girl stuff. But they both knew deep down that it wasn’t ever going to happen. That’s why it doesn’t look out of place to me.
This is what I get confused about. I grew up in the anime but watching the Crystal they make it seem like the moon knights and the scouts fall in love?
@@lunarialoonatic Yeah… I didn’t see that in the manga. I’m looking for that scene but I think it might’ve been something they put into Crystal for one reason or another. There was one artwork that had them posing together, but I don’t see it romantically.

Yeah, the outer senshi taking Hotaru away from Tomoe in the 90s anime is pretty messed up when you give it even a passing thought. In the manga he was like obviously worse and DEAD.

When they were making the Anime the manga hadn’t finished so they kinda had to take a step back and take Hotaru back since she would be raised by Michiru and Haruka not Tomoe which the Anime production got wrong. Not their fault though. It’s like FMA vs FMA Brotherhood

I remember reading that the producer of the 90's version found Mamoru boring... and wanted to sideline him for a MoonxMars pairing until the original author put her foot down on it. And from there... they didn't really seem to know what to do with him, I think.
I too found 90’s TuxMask boring all he did was throw a rose say some bullshit and tell Sailor Moon to use her wand

Reid’s ravens, Phobos & Deimos, are named after two of Ares and Aphrodite’s sons, the gods of Fear and Terror.
Ares and Aphrodite were known to the Romans as Mars and Venus.

The 90s versions basically just took the inner Senshi traits and personalities from their first appearances, pretty much entirely.. Ami (cram school, study!), Rei (pissed off because of shrine, make her angry!), Makoto (SENPAI!, make her boy crazed), Minako (pretended to be the princess..., so self-absorbed I guess??). But at least they added some layers to those basic tropes over time. The Crystal versions of the anime came off as blocks of wood most of the time. Those traits listed before vanished because they were tied to the scenarios. Crystal didn't really replace those temporary traits with other traits.
Only Sailor Moon herself really felt more like a real person in Crystal. She starts as the 90s version (childish crybaby), but the show keeps adding more facets to her.
The problem woth crystal version it is too short. The problem with 90s versions it has too much filler and the episodes should be about 100 episodes
@@jermandcole4887 i don’t agree the fillers are so fun and light hearted . It gets you to know the members more. Reí is a bit annoying but she cares so much for usagi I think that makes them really funny to me. Although I agree that sometimes it can be a bit much. But those “fillers” makes the show more dynamic you have calm and funny episodes and then it gets intense.

@@jermandcole4887I half agree. I do think season 1-2 had a lot of filler episodes that may seem unnecessary. Like with Usagi’s obsession on weight. But I also think such episodes are important bc one, we learned more about their personalities and two, we remember how young they are. Usagi and the main inners are 15 in the early seasons and maybe 17 at the end. The whole show is them trying to balance normalcy and being a fighter. And we saw some of the issues that arose like minako missing out on a lot of the things she used to love/volleyball/relationships. Ami struggling between pursuing her dream as a doctor or guardian. I did like the Crystal but I do think they kind of lost their personality and it’s easy to forget they were teens. Plus the plot was sometimes too fast for my taste. But I do love how they portrayed Usagi at some points and Mamoru’s development and their relationship+ Chibi Usa

90s!Mars was a massive tease early on, BUT!
Who was the one that pushed Usagi forward the hardest before facing Beryl? Mars.
Who was the first to encourage her to go after Mamoru even when still wanted to take distance from Usagi during the Black Moon arc? Mars.

only one to ask Usagi directly about her situation with Mamoru after leaving instead of just watching her suffer silently? Mars.
And who was the one in the first line of defense for Usagi when Galaxia took the inner guardians' star seeds? MARS.
So yeah, I advocate for that "NOBODY TOUCHES MARS!" line.
This is what I'm waiting for her to elaborate, but guess this narrator hates mars.

When you say Mars and Venus form a relationship I find that funny because Mars and Venus in Roman mythology were known lovers I wonder if that was done on purpose
Their Greek Counter parts are Ares and Aphrodite ( and yet they often hooked up much to Hephestus' annoyance). So entirely possible they did it on purpose as a reference to that
My opinion is they formed an alliance ( like a bond ) to being single or no boys

Disagreeing with leaving Uranus and Neptune from the 90s at the end, I mean it is obvious that their time to appear was not in the first arcs, that from the manga so there is no point in getting angry about that. I understand that their attitude towards the other senshi can be "annoying" since it gives the impression that they think they are better than them, when in reality the only thing they wanted was for Sailor Moon not to get hurt, they had woken up precisely to find the talismans and they promised to fulfill their mission even if they had to give their lives for it, if out of nowhere a group of girls appear trying to come up with solutions based on what they think is "okay" it is obvious that they will get angry and try to put them aside for that only complicated their mission. Their methods were the most direct and morally questionable, they know it and that is why at first they did not want to accept their duty, but they do. Willing to do what is necessary, they compromise their lives. If you see it that way, their attitude is no longer so reprehensible, of course there are times when they are wrong, such as their extreme mistrust, but they come to trust the other senshis and work with them. They have their flaws but I feel like you focused a lot on that. Well that's how I interpret it, greetings.
90s Michiru and Haruka weren't nice therego awful, because most manga purist can't stand such depictions. That said the 90s anime did a lot more to characterize them and make them more unique to their manga counterparts who don't feel that much more different, and while they may be rash and occasionally antagonistic they were important contrasts to Usagi who defended the two of them after betraying Hotaru and Setsuna in Stars but only for the hopes of a grander save to defeat Galaxia, which goes to demonstrate how all 3 of them are so much more admirable in spite of the initial sight.

You say the 90s Sailor Guardians were stereotypes, yet the Manga and Crystal Sailor Guardians were bland characters with little to no personality.
I would say Bright and Easily to Identify stereotypes make characters more memorable than Bland Characters that are made just to be there.

If you think they have no personalities, the two crystal movies gave them a lot of personality. And it showed a whole new level of Usagi and Mamoru's relationship.
The issue is that in the nineties I could like Haruka and Michiru. In the manga/Crystal all they really seemed to be there for was to make Mamoru and Usagi cheat and....ew, no?
Not to mention the princess dresses looking the exact same except for color. Yes, when I think of planets I think of the exact same outfits instead of diverse cultures.
Honestly no adaptation of SM is perfect and the manga is so plot based that it's hard to connect with most of the characters, and Crystal has similar issues.

They did have personality in the manga, not as out their as the 90’s anime but they still had it, it’s only Crystal where they had basically nothing to work with. Plus as someone else in the comments said, the movies helped too
Sailor mercury is my personal favorite because when Sailor moon, Sailor mars and sailor Jupiter were dreaming of Tuxedo mask, she was trying to make the people feel safe and secure. I Also feel like she’s very underrated, but overall she’s very kind even though her power isn’t as flashy as the others. To me, the hairstyle is also quite iconic.
She's always been my brother's favorite character & most of my friends have her at least in their Top 3 Characters in the series. Mercury is usually my favorite as well, I don't know why there are people who underrate her so much.
I'll be honest, I seriously wish Pluto had more time to shine in the 90s anime. There is so much more that could've been done with her.
Crystal did her a lot more justice.

so my theory with why it took Chibiusa 900 years to actually unlock her powers and allow her to start aging is because well... i doubt there was a lot of reason for her to unlock her powers in such a sheltered and protected life, it's not as if she was in any real danger during those 900 years, because her parents were both royalty and they had the sailor scouts to protect them. being placed in that danger but then seeing the courage of others to stand up to that threat is probably what unlocked it for her.

I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that the manga versions had better characterizations than in the 90s anime version. A lot of people kept defending the 90s anime characterizations with the "necessary fillers" and how it showed character depth but most of them were pretty superficial and overdone. Like the fillers centering around Venus/Minako will always be about dreaming about being a star or catching boys. Meanwhile, the manga didn't have to make a filler chapter in order to see her growth and development. She expressed her struggles and frustrations and found resolution without halting the overall plot.
What? The manga only fleshes out Usagi and Mamoru, and maybe Chibiusa. That's it. The inner senshi are basically blocks of wood in the manga/Crystal. They only show personality in their debuts, then here and there but nothing else.
The 90's anime made the inner senshi have far more personality, and actually act like teenage girls. The only real blunders were Pluto and Saturn, who admittedly gets more screentime in Crystal

I think 90s Michiru deserves some points for teasing Haruka around the others; especially when it comes to Seiya. Whenever Haruka...expresses displeasure about Usagi associating with Seiya, Michiru always chimes in with "Haruka doesn't like popular men". That one scene with all the Scouts hanging out at Usagi's place is simply the best, from beginning to end.

I think Venus is considered the captain of the senshi, second to only sailor Moon, because she's the only one that actually looks similar enough to Moon. Hence why she is known as the decoy when bad guys are trying to capture the princess, my theory for this stems back to the first arc wear Venus poses as princess serenity
I just watched both parts of the movie, however, I feel like the backstory for Nehelenia in the 90's anime was much more compelling. Crystal Nehelenia doesn't say much about her, she doesn't have much of a character growth compared to the 90's.

What? In Crystal you actually get her back story though, in the 90's anime it's a brief passed over flashback?
I know Nehelennia was such a tragic villain in the 90s Anime, yet all that is absent in the Eternal Movie.
I liked Crystal Nehelenia. Because the way she described herself, she seemed on par with the power of queen serenity herself.

Nice to see more Crystal appreciation. I am personally a bigger fan of the manga than the og anime (most likely bc I didnt grow up with it). Even tho the manga had fewer chapters than the anike had episodes, they still managed to make their personalities more fleshed out and believable.
It is best to buy the Japanese DVD and Blu-ray release of Sailor Moon Eternal because like the movie Violet Evergarden, Sailor Moon Eternal may never get a US disc release when any show or movie is given the Netflix stamp.

Tropical Rouge Pretty Cure is the anime that finally fully utilized boys in wearing sailor uniforms. The anime that was the closest was Nagi no Asukara. The best way to design sailor seifuku boys is giving them the same shirt design as the girls', and give the boys pants. There are sailor uniform boys wearing shorts too.
You know to be honest. I never really minded the fact that uranus and neptune were difficult to work with in the og anime. I guess i could kind of see them having that mindset considering they were the protectors of the outer edge of the solar system. I felt they would need to be more cautious and given they are all reincarnated i imagine their feelings like that would be redirected in some way, but my issue with it in general was that it just went way to fucking long. The anime dragged it on way to long, i think it would have been fine if it hadnt lasted throughout the whole damn season lol. I feel like the story would have benefitted from treating their relationships how they do in the sailor moon s movie for example. The ice queen one. They worked together with sailor moon to stop a huge threat. I wish the actual show had showcased more of that.

I’m kinda torn between Mars here. On one hand I like her 90s sass but I don’t like how she pined over Mamoru. On the other I like her Crystal level-headedness but not her spite towards men in general.

They forgot to sensor out the whole kiss convo, tho. And I watched the episode at least three hundred times as a kid. I picked up on the relationship as a kid. Believe me, I was a very confused kid. I'm shocked mom doesn't have a story about me asking if I could marry a cousin or if that's just a japan thing. As a kid, I thought it was either an error or a Japanese thing.

Secret of the Lost Princess' fan-fic (Chapter 3) based on the 90s anime, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune launch a surprise attack on Yuzuki Kagehoshi/Vampire Moon who strangely resembles Usagi, (except she has midnight blue hair & ruby red eyes) as soon as they turn up out of the blue (due to a misunderstanding thinking she's an enemy after when Rei has a comedic freak-out, mirroring how she met Usagi, when she first sees Vampire Moon and realizes she's, well, a vampire but not recognizing that she's their new friend Yuzuki, which in turn caused the initially very shy & timid Vamps to panic and try to flee) but Sailor Pluto & Sailor Saturn jump in to protect Vampire Moon and Sailor Pluto literally knocks them off their perch and calling them out on their shoot the first attitude (also with a bit of unintentional pay-back over what Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune did to them in 'Sailor Stars') and Sailor Pluto then informs everyone of a major surprise she had recently discovered, Yuzuki is actually another Moon Princess... who Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune was about to kill...

Regardless of what version of Sailor moon, the Sailor Guardians (or Sailor Scouts to those who are retro) are not to be underestimated
I am going to say this right now, as far as chars go, the ones who got a MAJOR upgrade in the characterization development from 90s to Crystal for me personally were- Sailor Moon, Chibi Moon, Tuxedo Mask, Mars, Uranus, and Neptune. Especially with those last 2, Neptune and Uranus pretty much ruined the Infinity Arc from the 90s version, making them unlikeable at times. What was more confusing is they were very likeable in the S and SS movies of the 90s where they were more then willing to work with the other scouts and protect their princess.

I agree with you on uranus and neptune from the 90's anime. I cannot stand them in the 90's series. They think they are way better working alone and they show no respect to the other sailor scouts, especially usagi WHO IS THEIR FREAKING FUTURE QUEEN!! And yea!! Where the hell were they when queen beryl attacked the moon kingdom???????
and ugh, don't get me started with what they did in the last few eps of Sailor Stars... that plan of theirs has to be the most stupidest, most selfish, most horrible thing they ever did!!! And honestly i felt nothing at all when galaxia killed them, that's what they get for not doing team work with the other scouts, and there's also their stupid distrust on the starlights, like the starlights are also sailor scouts who are against the same enemies! Yet uranus and neptune are like "uh yea, no. We'll handle this cuz we are way better than you and we don't trust you even if you are sailor scouts." 🤦🏽♀️
In Crystal though!!! I freaking love them!! Especially Uranus! She shows a lot more care to usagi! And i find it to be so wholesome, and i actually did felt so bad for her when she saw usagi sacrifice herself, and she blamed herself cuz all she ever wanted was to protect usagi. Her and Neptune are way better and more likable in crystal ☺️
I heard that the reason why Chibi Usa hits on her dad is because one thing the Black Moon Kingdom twisted her thoughts and another is kids don't understand love and often misunderstand the concept of it. She would mistake her affections towards Mamoru as romantic, that and because she sees Usagi as a sister and not a mom yet because Usagi hasn't matured, she simply just doesn't see them as her parents just yet. So she desired to just make Usagi jealous as any other little sibling would their older sibling. Not every kid goes through this huge misunderstanding of love but others do and they mistake feelings differently cuz they don't understand them yet.

I thought it was partly based on Freudian's weird ideas of parental love, where children love the parent of the opposite gender & hate the same gender parent. Chibiusa probably has a similar taste in men to Usagi & like you said because of time travel & how immature her mother is she has trouble recognizing them as her parents. You are right about the dynamic being more like siblings than Mother & Daughter. Still Helios kind of replaces Mamoru for Chibiusa's Attraction during the Dreams Saga (Season 4 & Eternal) & we can't forget that all of Chibiusa's bad behaviors were kind of inherited from Usagi.

Very good. I would say that I agree with roughly 95% of this Tier List (yes, I did the math on that). I do think that putting Crystal Uranus in S-Rank was maybe being a WEE bit generous (not a lot, just a tiny bit). But I do get personal preference and all that, so I'll just say no more.
I DEFINITELY agree that Tuxedo Mask, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are the ones that suffer the most in their 90s versions, because they're the ones who get stripped of everything. While I do think that Crystal Tuxedo Mask deserved maybe a few more moments to shine (or at the very least, been a little more spectacular in the moments he DOES have, just to drive the point home that he and Sailor Moon are supposed to be equal in power), it's still far more than his 90s counterpart ever gets. So, let's be grateful for small favors.
With 90s Uranus and Neptune, though...yeah. I simply don't get how the showrunners just COMPLETELY missed the point with those two. While it can be argued that Crystal Uranus and Neptune initially took their roles perhaps just a bit too seriously for their own good, the whole hangup with 90s Uranus and Neptune was that they had to DO the job, but neither one of them ever WANTED the job. That's why they'd always burn their bridges and absolutely insist on the most destructive answer to ANY problem, because at the end of the day, when it was all said and done, they were both DESPERATELY hoping that they were going to wind up dead and they wouldn't have to do this anymore. And as the 90s series bore out, time and again, that was just no good...for EVERYONE.
The rest of the list, I think you outlined pretty well, so there's really nothing more I could possibly hope to add. I will close out, though, by saying that if the final arc DOES get animated, I'm only going to watch MAYBE the last five or 10 minutes, since that'll be the only part that I think matters. Personally, I always felt that the Dead Moon Arc is where the manga should have ended, because that was really where the whole thing peaked, as far as overall character development goes. The fifth (and aptly named) "Chaos" Arc, regardless of the happy ending, is just where everything goes completely off the rails. I read through it once and I simply have no interest in returning. But that's just MY take on it.

I had watched Sailor Moon Eternal TWICE in a row when it had arrived. First by myself and then with my kids (I made them watch it) XD. The movie was AMAZING and they did the SuperS Arc with RESPECT. I LOVED what they had put in through the whole movie (from the beginning to the final credits- 90s fans might be surprised with the music is all I'm going to say). The movie (both parts) is definitely an A+ IMO.
Honestly, no matter how many times I watch the 90’s anime, I’ll never understand why Neptune and Uranus are disliked so much. I found them to be relatable. The Death Busters Arc, and S as a whole, is my absolute favorite mainly because of them.
I watched for the first time as an adult, and I’ve also studied psychology, so I wonder if this has something to do with how I look at the situation. Like, I don’t see their reluctance to work with Sailor Moon as condescending. I think it’s more of a determination, and a dedication to their own mission, rather than viewing Sailor Moon as incapable and childish. Also, possibly a trauma response in that they care more than they let on, and don’t want the others to end up in life-threatening danger on their behalf. Sure, I definitely also see impulseiveness, on both sides.
I also think that, for me, episodes 96 through 110 explained a lot in terms of why they acted the way they did.
I also feel like, while Crystal wasn’t my favorite by any means, I definitely preferred Chibi-Usa and Saturn in that version. Chibi-Usa was still annoying sometimes, but much less than she was in the original. I also liked Saturn getting more backstory, and more focus in general. These two would rank higher for me in Crystal, and the 90’s versions rank higher for everyone else in the group.
imo reason why I'm not a Uranus fan, she's a huge hypocrite. She flirts with different kinds of girls and is a complete womanizer, yet if she sees anyone flirt with Neptune she will get very possessive and jealous
@@magicalpasta5462 Manga Uranus is awful, she's a womanizer and lacks character. Anime Uranus is better, even if she's a hardball, she's a lot more no nonsense but still clearly someone that does want to do good, admirable in a sense and generally does grow overtime.
Agreed. Uranus and Nepptune are definitely too hated on in the 90's version. Having also got into Sailor Moon as an adult, their personalities were completely understandable (if a little flawed, but they're human beings after all, nobody's perfect)
Chibiusa is also far too hated in the 90's version too. She's insufferable in Season 2, but she's pretty tame in Season 3 onwards. I even found her pretty likeable in Season 4.

The reason is that, yeah, in the first season he had no memories of his past and teased Usagi/Serena, but, Usagi also didn't have her memories of being the Moon Princess either, and reacted the way she did to Mamoru's teasing. However, at the beginning of Sailor Moon R, they go right back to that teasing in the first episode. Until Usagi gets her memories back, and suddenly Mamoru has no idea who she is, but she reacts differently because she knows exactly who he is. I do agree with you about 90s Mars though. I always thought Rei opposing Usagi the way she did at the beginning of the Rainbow Crystal storyline in season 1, and basically bullied Ami into siding with her, instead of with Usagi was bad.
Now THAT is something I didn't see in the 90s Anime.

The fact they made 90’s Sailor Uranus and sailor Neptune unlikeable but they had the balls to make Uranus take away the one thing that can help usagi/Serena to battle the enemies but take away the one item that belongs to their royal future/present princess/queen of the moon kingdom. Then they had both Neptune and Uranus attack their princess after saving Saturn from mistress 9 and have her be reborn into the world as a baby. That bad enough but they still want to eliminate her when she was reborn into a baby seeing that they thought Saturn had a dangerous powers. And they though sailor moon was too soft to be a leader and princess.
That is until usagi put them in their place like-*bitch do you know who you’re talking to!!!! We do not kill defenseless babies…..even if they do have the most deadly power and have the ability to end humanity. Now you either work with us or i‘ll have Pluto put you in a Groundhog Day time loop like that one movie for punishment*
However I do like they change their personality in crystal and the new viz dub *though I love how they did rei and usagi friendship and how they interact of their new dialogue unlike the dic dialogue. I’m sure they did a better translation of their dialogue of all scouts interaction*

In terms of powers 90's Tuxedo Mask was definitely an F. He didn't do anything. Throw a rose, say something inspirational, and then leave. I love Crystal Tuxedo Mask as not only does he have ACTUAL POWERS he also can throw a punch!

I think you fail to see how sailor moon from crystal, how she evade those attacks, and how she chooses to fight back towards her enemies, I thought she knew what she was doing was dope, unlike the original version, she had to depend on her friends and tuxedo mask, being too much of a crybaby, was trying not to attack the enemy( mostly dying and leastly healing) til the end, then there was a time when sailor Uranus and Neptune wanted to see her strength, she could've fought back but it's not like she takes any art of combat, I prefer the crystal more than I do the original, no offense to the people who favours the original
