i just love seeing the kids being adventurous with so many new dishes. considering indonesian food is sometimes can be too spicy or even weird for bules. and they’re all such a sweet, well-mannered kids. you guys have been doing great parenting.
The way Kelly eats the rice with the soup broth and the emping is exactly how you should enjoy soto betawi. You pour the soto (broth+meat) onto the rice and eat it mixed. In Indonesia we always mix our soup w the rice and eat them together, not separate.
@@BagsPackedFamily gado-gado this is indonesian salad consists of blanched veggies, tofu and tempe mixed together with peanut sauce dressing, we eat it with rice or "lontong" (rice cooked wrapped in banana leaves) ..or ketoprak (fried tofu, vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts also with peanut dressing but they put garlic in it so it's more savory and has different flavor than gado-gado peanut dressing) ..both these are vegetarian and jakarta's delicacy. You can also eat "nasi ulam" ..the "basic" one does not come with meat, although they sell "add on" like "dendeng a.k.a indonesian beef jerky" or tofu (tahu), tempe, egg (either boiled or fried egg) as toppings. This is also Jakarta staple street food.

I'm very enjoy to watched your videos, The white crackers are made from garlic and tapioca flour so it's vegetarians friendly and the name is "kerupuk", most prawn crackers don't have a flower shape they have a brown color and a thin shape.
I'm from Jakarta but I live in New Mexico. When I crave for soto betawi, I go for similar subst. here in New Mexico, which is Green Chilli Stew. But nothing beats my homeland comfort foods.
Hi Jon, each time you eat indonesian soto of some kind that came mixed with the innards etc, you actually can request to just get meat only and pass on the other parts that you don't like.. you can tell them "daging saja" (pronounce: duh geeng suh juh) ..even the Indonesians oftenly order only the meat without the organs or innards.
Betawi = Batavia (Dutch colonial era) The natives of Jakarta at that time found it difficult to pronounce the word Batavia, the dialect changed to Betawi The original tribe is called the Betawi tribe. One of the typical foods of the Betawi tribe is: Soto Betawi
I feel bad for Kelly since she’s vegan obviously she couldn’t eat all the food. Therefore she can handle everything even only with crackers or just soup. Love this fam
For the next food hunt actually kelly can request anything to the owner if she wants anyfood without meat. Bcs most of the time all the soup in indonesia doesn’t made mix with meat. So anyfood can be requested by the guest. Example if kelly buys nasi goreng she can asked to not put egg or chicken inside the nasi goreng. Hope it helps
