May I just say, that is the most adorable trumpet I have ever seen.
I love the way he says "playing the piccolo trumpet is fun", and when he says "you can get dizzy, you can black out, and it's hurt, BUT WORST OF ALL MUSICLY YOUR THROAT SHUTS DOWN...", musical playing is more important than healthyness. nice vid
Thank you so much for this wonderful gift to all trumpeters.
A beautiful experience to listen to your playing.
I'm a tubist... I think I'm in the wrong place.
food courts the other way. save me a slice.
Yeah, get out of here.
Titus Bailey me too
Same
Back away slowly before anyone notices.
I have been playing piccolo now for almost 10 years and I only recently learned not to pour so much air into it. Dr. Burt could not be more right on this stuff. Thanks for the video. Good luck with your playing!
+Drew Shrock Does the piccolo trumpet use trumpet mouthpieces?
It veries on the receiver
No, most piccolos use mouthpieces that have a coronet-sized shank or "receiver" as Ozzy calls it.
@@kevinlane1621 some take a cornet mouth piece
@@kevinlane1621 some use trumpet shank, some use cornet shank mouthpieces. You can play a normal trumpet/cornet mouthpiece, but generally get better results using a shallower cup designed for piccolo use.
My band director in 7th grade played a piccolo trumpet and would play lines for us. I loved it and always wanted to transition from the b flat trumpet to the piccolo. Loved it.
I would also recommend the piccolo books by Gerry Webster (Brass Press, 2 volumes) and Mel Broiles, which have a lot of great tips and literature in them!
Jeanne Pocius Dorismond great tip!
Sounds like... England.
How? 😂
@@TopRacer-tx5cd does it not sound regal and english and propper to you?
@@Saccillia It's quite elegant and royalty like (reminds me of the Queen)
How does this amazing channel have only 11k subs???? This man deserves more!!!!!
Well done. Down-to-earth practical advice and a tone to aspire to.
Dang you make that instrument shine :D
Dr. your sound is scintillating. Bravo.
So peaceful and calming to listen to.
I was talking to my friend Byron Autry about Piccolo Trumpet playing, and this confirms some of the things he told me. Nice Video! Nice control and excellent sound!
Love your work!! Your explanations are wonderful.
What a lovely sound!
thank you Jack for these tips. Just bought the YTR-6810S Piccolo Trumpet(30 y/o horn) from and Retired Professor, and your instruction has been helpful.
Nice upload, Dr. Burt. Thank you!
Thank you! It's very useful and interesting! And the sound of yours is great!!
I have no experience with wind instruments. But, I really want to try to learn the trumpet. Especially after I discovered the famous Trumpet concerto by Hayden.
Improvisations on a trumpet just seem so fun to do. One day :(
I have been playing for 11 years and nothing gives me more joy and purpose! God bless you and I hope you have learned it!
Just don't pick up a Piccolo until to you can comfortably and consistently play high. It won't help you and your full size trumpet is your friend.
Do it! I started last september and the learning proces can be frustrating (mostly bc I have a lot less experience than my fellow students in the beginners concert band, and they are all like 10 years old while I am 20) but it is a lot of fun!
What a beautiful sound you have achieved.
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge...
CBS should definitely hire you to re-record their intro. for "Sunday Morning".
Really awesome tips and fantastic playing....agreed in every aspects. Really a wonderful teacher and artist
Fanfare from Albason by Gottfried Reiche (1667-1734). He was J.S. Bach's principal trumpet player.
Excellent Trumpeteer! Thanks for the help!
Si , es divertido , a mi me gustaría tocar todo el día la piccolo
Gracias por el video
Right on advice!
FANTASTIC DR. B!
Thanks for the tips!
very good explanations, thank You
awesome!
Well presented, without attitude, brilliant
i cant wait to get one of my own
Bravo Dr. Burt. Very very informative.
Thank you very much. This was very helpful I have been trying to play the Brandenburg and I am running into tons of left over air and no place to put it. Thank you.
Tom
brilliant student of finess! MUSICALITY!
Informative and great playing. Well done.
Stephen Botto
i love the piccolo trumpet, it has a awesome sound. can't wait to buy and learn on a piccolo trumpet myself :)
yes you are right! i only recently learned about the piccolo trumpet and i can't wait to try it
Very good sound
thanks for share those tips :)
Ecxelente maestro!!
And remember Maynard Ferguson with renown for a full sound even 2 octaves up had only 1 lung and could only talk in a whisper. Mendez said use less air to play than to talk.
Good stuff .
Nice!!!
i really want one of these
Say Heah Dr. Burt. Thanx You. ,, .
6:00 ammmmmmmmmmmmmmazing
That was on a compilation of unheard instruments
i need the name of that song
useful for trombonist as well! great!
All Perfect
of course i recognize that piece of music you demo with, doc, love it, always have...but what is it called please?
Do the same air techniques apply to a normal b flat because that might help with my attempts on a double f
" Playing the picollo trumpet is fun " . It depends on the conductor . You sound so wonderful , but what about @ ppppp ? None the less . Great advice .
Very regal sounding!

"playing the piccolo trumpet is fun". Are you sure? I don't know man it seems to ruin lives and shatter homes. In any case you certainly do it well.
AdenosinePush dude it’s people like you that make other people feel bad about themselves it’s just your opinion maybe your just not as serious as some others about playing the horn if you get serious and actually start playing trust me you will see results in no time
AdenosinePush.
You can redeem yourself if you admit your comment was meant as a cynical observation with a twist of humor?
Otherwise get lost.
@@ruslannunez4449 Guys, chill out :) It's just some lighthearted humor. Sorry your respective senses of humor are broken. Being too serious about something difficult like this will eat you alive.
I dont know because in my b flat trumpet i have denis wick 4c which is shallow but there is only one size more shallow mouthpiece and i dont know to buy it for piccolo or no
Thank you sir but please how can I find the keys on piccolo trumpet
I know I'm really late to the party but I'm having the problem with breathing with normal trumpet when I take in less air it feels fine so is that ok?
It's Sunday Morning!
Would you recommend a rotary piccolo or a piston piccolo
He has another video that talks about the differences between rotary and valve trumpets and the benefits. I am became very curious to try a rotary trumpet after watching that video bc the French horn is my 2nd instrument [ I ve only played rotary fr. Horn.]. The action is different in a rotary and I can see how it would be more responsive.
It sounds wondefull... Oth air and embouchure must be perfekt... Can you please show the way your embouchure is set?
Does anybody know where to get a decent piccolo tpt?
Briliant ; but if you cant play very high on a Bb will you be able to play any higher on a Picc?
Good question, thats a common misconception. You have basically the same range on a piccolo as you do on the soprano register horns (C/Bb/A etc.) Work on range on your trumpet first before branching to picc, it helps so much, try to get the upper register (about Bb to high G above the staff) to almost sing. The goal to prep for the picc is not to "scream" on the trumpet but to sing the upper register, you'll find it will also require less air in time for the tone. Hope this helps!
LowReedExpert1 Can you play as low on a piccolo trumpet?
No, but depending on the piccolo you can play down to a C# on A picc.
What was the song at 5:56
#5:56 awesome!
Its because of this song, "the Trumpet shall sound" that i need this instrument
whats it called
hi dr. jack can i know please what keys the piccollo trumpet is b flat or what key
They can usually convert between B flat and A (written as "Bb/A"), often just by changing the lead pipe and adjusting the slides.
How did he find a rotary valve piccolo trumpet????
Well now Schagerl builds the Berlin Piccolo, which I also play and am absolutely overwhelmed by everything it does and I can do with it, and in that video Jack Burt obviously plays a Scherzer, quite sure a 8111, you can find them on Thomann and other stores
Nice Video, very informative
Somebody knows which trumpet he uses?
Horst Müller-Meier-schulze I do believe he's using a Scherzer. Dr. Burt, can you enlighten us to the model?
+Horst Müller-Meier-schulze It is a Schagerl. Hope that helps.
My mistake. I thought because he was a Shagerl "artist" etc. etc.
What's the first song he played called
Abblasen - Gottfried Reiche
El autor es Gottfried Reiche, fue el trompetista de J.S. Bach es una fanfarrea y esta grabada por el canadian brass como intro al Tyumpet voluntary
Why does he play a Scherzer trumpet in a Schagerl Video?
The piccolo trumpet is a cool instrument, but I prefer the Bb trumpet because those are the most popular trumpets in band.

Do you think it would be feasible to play pop songs (apart from the ubiquitous “Penny Lane”) such as samba on piccolo trumpet or would it sound silly?
What type of Piccolo Trumpet is that?
+Digital Fighters
I believe it is a Scherzer.
Little Late response from me but thanks!
I have Getzen BbA four valve and have been having air compression pains. So much so that I have to release air or feel like I'm going to blow up!!!! I tried your shallow air a few minutes ago and it seems to be better. I am a lead trpt with a big band and am used to blowing my brains out. I use a Bach 10.5C with the bore bored out with a #23 drill as suggested by the ITG. My lungs hold at least 2500ML when I use the Hospital breath exerciser I got from the Hospital. You inhale when using this and I can "Pin" the arrow to the top. I have tried a Warbureton with a 4M cup and a #11 shank. But always returned to the Bach. Also my picc experience indicated the Picc plays better with the A shank. You can use the Picc in A when playing a D concert number which would put you in E =4# on the Bb . If you use the A shank, you play up a half note so that you trade 4# for one flat. It makes the trills easier. Finally I've heard of a Picc in C as if Bb isn't hard enough. Have you ever heard of a Picc in C?
And I thought the cornet was the smallest trumpet. Turns out I was beat by piccolo trumpet. I’m still smallest trumpet where I’m at.
I'm treated like a whole different instrument because I play cornet. My director just got me interested in this amazing looking instrument
It almost sounds like a violin in some ways
in which way?
Well, can't you hear it sounds like a violin?
In the vibrations of the air, way.
More like a flute...
When playing fast notes I suppose.
that final D on B minor Mass....
What's the intro piece called
Abblasen
"Abblasen" by Gottfried Reiche
5:56 is beautiful
whats it called
@@theyearthreethousand911 the trumpet shall sound
I’m a euphonium player btw
why do i think nobody knows what euphonium means?
Most people actually don’t believe it or not it’s sad because they actually sound pretty good
I’m also a euphie haha. But i can play the trumpet and picc. It just takes practice. And yes its possible to have 2 different embrochures. Sometimeswhen i have to play really high on my euphie. I use a trumpet embrochure haha. And it works. 😄
One piece feels?
why do I hate rotary instruments
What is the opening solo he plays?

You really need a sound proof room to practice horns, neighbors won't be happy..
Why the piccolo trumpet look like a crossbreed of a trumpet and a French horn
Step One ...find a hall with plenty of reverb....
Plays Beatles!
Um is it too high bc im sensitive to high sounds
My wife is not a fan when I practice
Bigbullets Workshop JAJAJAJAJA
Keep practicing... :)
Why don't you get a mute?
shouldn't need a mute for a wife, if she don't like guys that hit the high notes she needs to move out lol ;)
Whose wife is?
Nah I’d rather hear that trumpet part from Jurassic Park
Bach, Händel and Telemann are NOT piccolo music. It's just a bit more convenient than a huge natural trumpet :)
could you do a NORMAL piccolo trumpet, not that weird useless side key trumpet
soma the n00b how is it useless? In Europe, rotary valves are the main contender in instrument design as piston valves are in North America. It just varies in the comfort and personal preference.
Don’t be lazy learn to play the natural trumpet! Come on! Bach did write this horrible, shrill monstrosity!
