I don’t believe you mentioned it in your video, but noticed you stopped your wipers all the way up. That definitely helps. For me, I found it much easier to not remove the 4 screws on the cradle behind the motor. I just installed the end of the metal clip, held it up and slipped the new blower under it, then pushed it down to snap it. Saves some time. Great video-thank you!!
Craig Andresen thx for that advice ! I’m having a hard time getting those 4 torques screws off . I’ll move the wipers to the upward position cause I broke the old blower getting it out since that wiper arm and bolt was in the way ! I will install it tmrw needed a break after not being able to remove the 4 screws . I will do it your way !!!! 💯💥💪🏽
left side cover going back in takes some maneuvering to get the flapbase back. it slides in on a little groove than holds the base to the left side at the bottom. i fount this out after i tightened down the left side and tried reinstalling the flap so of course i had toi take it back out :D $127 for the blower motor and about 2 hours of my time with smoke breaks. BMW wants over $500 for just the blower motor and probably an hour and a half labor. thanx this was a lifesaver!
Thanks Dan. Yep, squeally motor I have, and I was looking to obtain a new one and realized I was looking at wrong motor (control unit motor) when I watched this vid. Ppl like you are to be commended for taking the time/making the effort, hats off! . Thank you very much again. Although considerably more expensive, better to order the right one so that your Sunny Saturday afternoon task goes better.
JR, if the blower fan is not functioning, it's likely an electrical or coolant issue which needs to be investigated separately. The blower motor usually begins to fail by getting noisy or squealing first as the bearings start to go. This video's original intent was to address the fan bearing in fail mode. You are correct in assuming that the blower fan should not be looked at or replaced first just because it's not turning. It is likely a coolant or electrical issue.
Thank you so much for your video, you were right on!!!! I tried taking short cuts but i found that you cant it only works with your directions step by step. Thanks again keep out the good work.
Great write up thank you, I had to break my old squirrel cage on one side to get it out of the compartment. I have an E 46 with the SULEV M 56 engine. I had to disassemble the new one fan side and then assemble it once it was in the compartment. Also when you're putting one of the fan covers back make sure that the slots line up with the slots that are in the area so all the screw holes lined up correctly
Great video, easy to follow. However upon executing this repair on my 2003 325i, I realized the blower assembly does not fit through the opening like yours does. I had to break the blower cages to remove the broken motor, and return my blower motor to Autozone to find a unit with detachable cages in order to save an additional couple hours in removing the windshield wiper assembly and a bunch of other crap. Perhaps this info will be useful to someone else...
Not sure if you mentioned this in the video, but I saw that you had the wipers in the vertical position to help aid in blower motor cover removal.....I couldn't remove without placing the wiper arms in a similar position. Thank you for the video. Greatly appreciated.
Hey thanks for the video. I watched it abt 7 times then i changed my blower motor in my 2002 BMW 330i. For some reason the motor was rubbing on the left inside wheel. I tightened the right side tight and left the left side abt half way tight or so and it stopped. It took 3.5hrs lol but i got it done!
Glad you were able to complete it yourself, don't worry about the time it takes, better than paying someone else to do it. Keep the e46 going, great car.
If your X5 is based on the e39 5 series (1996-2003) the entire dash would have to be removed to get to the blower fan. If you don't see a removable panel behind the tray holding the cabin filter at the firewall, then the whole dash would have to come out. This procedure is specific to the e46 3 series.
My blower was making whining noise and I took it out. Cleaned it and oiled it and the sound went away. No need to buy new one if there is no play in the axle or the motor is not jammed.
If your motor is squealing like this follow these steps to expose the blower motor, then spray silicone grease into the small holes on the motor while it's running. Simple as that, no need to remove/replace the whole thing.
Great video, what a pig of a job on right hand drive 320cd. Needed to remove inlet manifold as wiper assembly is in the way on the left. Cut the wheels off the old one for removal. I removed right hand side screws as well so the rear panel assy can be moved just enough to slide new motor in. Also grinding noise from new motor - others have had this problem too - dremel the inner fan blades and I dremelled the panel lips on both sides too. Also if your new one has been balanced, check the weights have not come loose I had one weight catching the rear panel so I applied super glue to all of them. Tape on screws is another great tip as said in video and put the bottom 2 screws in first otherwise you will not get the washer pass the motor! Feel sorry for M43 owners - Head off according to TIS. German engineering at its finest!
Wow, sorry to hear. I guess back in the 90's when the e46 was designed, RHD was an after-thought. Now that vehicle manufacturers are using global platforms, that should help. Great tips and a great story.
@@LoveableRogue It's right behind of the fan looks like silver colored small radiator. Theres lots of dust accumulated in the fins. You should spray soapy water and wash with clean water.
Thank you verry much for your time and effort. :) i just wanted to say that the heating engine gave me signs runing with variable ups and downs turations at every. second until one day stoped and drain my battery. im going to apply your strategy and i will let you know. Thanks again
One thing I found that created was the fact that the plug on the replacement fan had a 90 degree plug!! Beleive me it will not connect. My take-away is to make sure the new fan you get has the same type plug as the old one (configuration). Also take note of the position of the vent door and how it is located.
Thanks NailDoctor, Oh if I only had 10% of the money that Ray Ramano has.... Spazzz - if you take your time 2-3 hours, the good thing is there's nobody to charge but yourself.
It's easier to put the strap on the back of the bracket before mounting the blower motor. After that, I used a small piece of duct tape to hold the screw at the top of the back to keep it from falling into the AC. I didn't have a magnetic torx tip.
GRIGORIS NTASKAS the 5 series may be different, on the gen before, the whole dash had to come out. I haven't seen the E60's, but if it involves removal of the dash, you may not be able to reach the bearing for lubrication. If noise is coming from the motor, the fan may already be too far gone for lubrication to help. Sorry can't be of more help here.
My mechanic is quoting me about $400-600 fo the repair. Does that sound fair? I admire your skills but know better than to try to do this by myself. Great video and explanation. Thank you!
Labor rates in the SF Bay Area are $150- $175 per hour so depending on where you are, labor can add up. A mechanic would probably figure 1.5-2 hours for the job and the part can be $150-200. Your mechanic seems to be quoting the correct range.
Dan Tsuchiya thank you for the reply and info. Ok, guess I'll be saving up...although I don't mind the cold but the heat waves hitting us in So Cal this year is wicked. 110 today and 90 at night...felt like Texas.
AWESOME VID > PERFECT TUTORIAL > THANK YOU!!! Quick question if I could: After I drive my 2008 535i (E60) for a while, with the AC on, I notice a low volume whine coming from the vents... When I turn the AC off and leave the fan running, even on a very low setting, , I still hear the whine. Then, when I turn the fan knob full left, totally off, the whine goes away. In your opinion, could this be the fan or another component in the ventilation system?
The set up in the e60 is similar, but the access is a whole different game, I believe your whole dash needs to come out. It sounds like when the fan is in operation (vent, heat or AC) you get the whine which might be the bushings that the fan wheel shaft sits. Sure wish they had easier access, then you could spray the area with silicone spray (or some other lubricant) and see if the sound temporarily goes away....which would be your signal to change out the unit. Good Luck.
how did you get the motor blower electrical connector plugged in? I cant seem to get min to plug in someone else has replaced it before and I think it is bent up a little.
Take a look at the receiving end of the fan connector and then look at the power side and make sure they are essentially the same pins located in the same area....like a mirror. if your fan side has a different plug or has a different number of receptors/spades, then you have received a blower fan from a different model/year. Also check to see if someone actually replaced the plug on the power side (look for electrical tape and a splice in the line.)
My blower makes noises like a 2001 car should. It seems to be good for now, but liked and favorited for later anyhow. I'll probably go the process with soap just get rid of that Crayola Crayon smell that's been stuck in the car since I purchased it. And to get some good practice.
Dan, before I tackle this, I wanted to ask you, I just replaced the FSR thinking that it was the culprit but it's still the same. The fan would intermittently turn on and off. It blows cold air/ heat without any problems, when it decides to work. I used to hear some humming noise in the lower fan settings. Now sometimes, you can hear the fan trying to run but it sounds like something is lodged in there preventing it to rotate. What are your thoughts? -------- Ryan
chesmari You can probably tell I'm not a pro mechanic, just a hobbyist. It's not too difficult of a job to get to a point where you can peer into fan area to see if one of the flapper doors had dislodged causing some interference with the blower fan. I think it's unlikely that is the issue because you would hear some "rattling" before stoppage, especially if the fan operates intermittently. Similar to Raheem, make sure your coolant level and monitoring of its temp is in good shape as the HVAC is tied closely with that system. The other thing it might be is an issue with the manual switches (on/off for AC, or fan speed) but this would require electrical continuity testing. I would not recommend switching electrical switches or sensors without running these tests or a qualified auto electrical or HVAC mechanic looking at it. Let us know what you find. Good Luck.
Grat video mate, thanks. I am wondering how is this happening that you uploaded the video in 2013 and back then it looked like today's at least 720p and now almost 9 year laters the quality is similar to 80's VHS :D does youtube work like that?
I have squeak noise problem on my E39 from this blower, but this is actual only in winter and after it warms up, noise goes off or maybe is slightly hearable. Any explanation on this? And is it possible to remove blower in similar way also on E39? Because I found DIY where guys are taking blower out from interior side and it is even worse and longer process, half interior should be removed...
The noise will likely change or become more often or prominent as the surface wears. You can try non-replacement lubrication methods, but eventually you'll need to change things. Unfortunately in the e39, you have to remove the dash to get to the fan.
Dan Tsuchiya my 02 325i just stopped blow any type of breeze thru my vents it shows my fan is on high but nothing comes out. I checked the fuses first none were blown then I tried the blower motor resistor still nothing, does it sound like it's the blower motor itself? Please get back with me thank you
Blake, do you hear the fan moving (turning?) You should be able to hear that change speed. If it's changing speed when you increase or decrease the fan speed, then it's not the blower motor, it's likely the vent operation (three buttons on the left that control dash vent direction) that needs further diagnosis. On that part it could be the button control or it could be the small motor(s) that actuate the opening and closing of the vents. Button control is from inside the car, the little actuators are accessible when you go into blower motor area which I show.
hi, i was wondering, i have a 318d e46 from 2003 and i have this buzzing noise coming from the upper center of the dashboard the noise is only there when the engine revs at about 2500 rpm, give or take 400 rpm. i've checked if the sound was coming from the enginebay, but in there i don't hear a thing, would you have an idea what this could be?
Rick Felder There could be a couple of things. One is a faulty door near the fan unit. You can see me holding this door (one side) at about 11 minutes into the video. If this is faulty on the passenger side (the actuator) then it won't channel air that way. Usually the actuator is disconnected or faulty. The other is possible blockage. The first one to check is if the rotator dial at the vent is actually opening up (sometimes that wheel does not open or close the vent and it's an easy fix by replacement.) There could be some blockage up above the glove box area and it would require you take down the glove box and test if these is air flow along the various sections starting from the fan box area. I would start from the vent and work backwards towards the fan.Good Luck.
The blower motor set up should be the same even in the 318i e46, though we did not see those in the states. With regards to the final stage resistor, you may want to change that first to see if it solves any issues as it's easier to get to (and in a separate location) than the blower motor. Good Luck!
Hi Dan, thanks for the video. Can you tell me where I find the resistor for my fan. It has just stopped working altogether. No squealing , no noises, nothing. Your help will be much appreciated. thx
If you are looking for the final stage resistor, you can get to it from the passenger side (right side) footwell, there is a panel that you can remove and it's behind there held up with some screws, not the easiest to reach and you need good lighting to locate it . There are some good videos you can reference by looking up "BMW e46 Final Stage Resistor, blower motor" . Good Luck
Very nice presentation. My problem with my 2003 BMW 325i is that the heater/Aircon blower motor behind my dash sometimes won't stop running causing discharge to my battery. When I turn off the ignition key sometimes I can still hear the blower running. What do you think is the problem? Can anybody help me with this issue. Thanks!
KB, this is most likely your Blower Motor Fan Resistor, if this fails, sometimes your fan will not turn off even though you shut off the ignition. Do some searches on the Fan Resistor, this would be the first thing I would change. Good Luck!
Hey Dan. I drive a 2000 323Ci and starting last week my fan does not blow any air at all. My AC and my defroster doesn't seem to have any feel of airflow as well (though when i turn on the AC I would hear the whistle noise every time it is turned on) . Does that mean I have to replace the blower motor or it may be something cheaper like a Final Stage Resistor. I'm not that knowledgeable when working on cars just letting you know.
Thanks for the note and also for letting me know your skill/knowledge level. There could be a number of things, one being the most basic which is the blower fan or even the fuse is out of commission. There are a number of other reasons that can affect the operation such as coolant level being too low, coolant leaks, loose or rodent damaged wiring, fan control or other controls being inoperative. BMW has one of the most intertwined HVAC systems around. Unfortunately, air conditioning for European cars has historically been an afterthought. What I would suggest is you have an Auto-Electric or AC Shop diagnose the issue and tell you what's wrong (usually 0.5-1hour shop time.) Then you can determine if it's a job you want to tackle or have them take care of.
If you mean the motor for the fan changes speed, this might be the fan control switch going bad not the fan itself. Usually, the fan is changed out more for being noisy or complete non-operation.
If you are talking about the evaporator, you can see around the blower motor case, but you can't access it unless you go from inside the vehicle and disassemble the dash. The heating element sits below that so you really can't see it, you will need to go inside the vehicle to access it. ua-cam.com/video/NPxNE7Od6Gw/v-deo.html. Unless it's leaking, that's probably not why you aren't feeling any heat from the vents.
325i 2.5, valve cover hits... guessing the “eco” engine, valve cover has to have to come off?... broke 1 wheel trying to squeeze new blower motor in passed it
Translated into English: Isn't it better to replace it from the inside where the dashboard and steering wheel are removed? Answer, on the e46 Chassis you should go in from the Engine Side (easier.). For similar year 5-series cars you have to remove the entire dash.
@@SirFixAlotAutos Thank you dear sir I have a 330 car and I suffer from some problems such as the fan is working direct and it is supposed to work after the temperature rises or when the air conditioner is turned on And another problem, where the fuel consumption has become more than before
There's not enough space between engine and windshield to get the motor out on my e46. I've tried million different ways and I cant get it out without breaking the motor. Hole is not big enough to get the fan blade through. I have n42 engine and I guess it's slightly different than yours, so I have less space...
Sorry to hear about the situation with the N42. It's a 4 cylinder, I wouldn't think BMW would make the fan unit un-serviceable, but you never know. In this video watch from about 8.5 minutes there is a small plastic housing that I removed with three torx fasteners. This must be done in order to remove the fan. You should have this flap and directional plastic housing that can be removed. If it's there and you can remove it, just make sure you go in reverse after mounting the new fan. Good Luck!
hey guys i have a 00 323ci coupe and my dash doesnt, blow cold nor hot air the ac conpressor goes on when i turn on the ac on the control does anyone know or have had this problem
Dan Tsuchiya If your X5 is based on the e39 5 series (1996-2003) the entire dash would have to be removed to get to the blower fan. On later X5's you can go in through the passenger side footwell and remove it from there: ua-cam.com/video/qiNe9rbgPe0/v-deo.html
+Marc Wikina If you are still getting air blowing from the dash and defrost vents, then no. You have a three position switch which controls the direction of the air, sometimes one of the buttons essentially fails even though the light is on. There could be an issue with your controls for the vent flaps also located in the same area as the blower motor or some sort of blockage/disconnect which is keeping air from coming into the foot-well areas. There are air tubes which connect to the foot-well areas which come down from the blower motor housing, make sure there aren't any disconnects there...but start from the switch.
Igor, I think on the e39 you have to remove the dash and the blower motor fan is replaced from inside. There are a couple of videos already up if you Google "e39 Blower Motor Fan Replacement." It looks like it's pretty involved, good luck!
Hi Dan, Question... on my X3 E83 2006 compressor is fully charged, compressor clutch works fine, but I am not getting Cold AIR...On the Vent when I had AC off/heater off and i still feel hot air venting out of main vent...even thou I have toggle switch on COLD...any advise?
I was going to say the replacement of the thermal resistor is needed or possible malfunction as it relates to the cold hot roller switch right by the vents. I don't really know, what might be the issue, but those are two places that cold affect temp feed even when AC button is off and you have the temp set at 59 degrees. Sorry could not be of more help.
Hi Dan, thanks for your advise.... I did hard reset on AC switch on front panel like you did in your video and it fixed my problem... Thanks again and especially thanks for your reply on my concern, not too many folks replied back on requested concern...
Great, I'm glad the video helped. I don't run ads on my videos and therefore don't make any money, I just post them because I had to fix an issue. Thanks.
Hey Brandon, I would think the X5 would keep to the same set up, the Bavarians are usually pretty good about making things logical, but I have never worked on a X5. If your X5 has that similar tray that's taken out near the beginning of my video, then you probably have a similar set up.
Yes the pre-2011 X3's should have a similar twin scroll fan and the procedure should be similar. The actual Part Number may differ, but you can confirm that with your dealer prior to purchase. Good Luck!
Any ideas on how to do this with the UK spec of this vehicle? So I removed everything, but the blower motor doesn't have enough room to come out. Where the windshield wiper is on your driver side it's on the reverse side on my vehicle (the side you pulled the blow motor out from) which is not blocking me from pulling it out and it won't pull out the other way, the space is too narrow.
You wouldn't happen to know the exact part name to the black plastic pieces with the yellow rubber trim is would you? One of mine snapped and I need to get a replacement.
They are the heater blend door flaps, but you should make sure it's not the actuator (little motors that turn them) that snapped. You can probably get the doors new at a dealer, or get one off a wrecked car. Good Luck.
+edwardo Canela On the E90, E92 (2006-onwards 3 series) BMW actually implemented a better design. Your fan blower is actually located behind your glove box and adjacent panel. The fan is a single turbine and mounts vertically, it's easier to service and clean the intake area. Good Luck.
Translation to English: I have a 99 320d e46 because the ac compressor docks and undocks when it should always be on. Response: the problem is likely something to do with temp sensors, not a blower motor replacement. Check your ambient temperature sensor and your blower motor resistor. Translation back: o problema provavelmente tem a ver com sensores de temperatura, não com a substituição do motor do ventilador. Verifique o sensor de temperatura ambiente e o resistor do motor do ventilador.
I have a 1999 E46 and I have AC thats Icy Cold! but no heat or defrost. so..... where do i start my neighbor said it could be a fuse but I'm so confused. I know more about the mechanical workings rather than electrical.
Raheem Williams If it's a directional thing where you are getting no air from the dash vents near the windshield and the footwell, it's going to be more of the switch that directs air to those vents. If you are only getting cold air and the heat is not working, it's likely the temp control (this is a switch behind the panel) or the blower motor resistor if the blower works for AC but doesn't turn on for heat. The first thing to check are the fuses just to make sure it isn't something simple. Will need more information what is working and what is not to point you better towards a starting point.
Dan Tsuchiya Ok so here is the list. I get air from the dash vents only I try and turn on heat and move the little wheel up for heat the air stops and I can hear the system trying to produce heat but no heat. I also get no air or heat from the top of the dash and the footwell. nothing comes out. I only get air from the center vents. :(
Raheem Williams There are two things it could be. First you need to check your coolant level and bleed the system after you fill it. You can fill it from the expansion tank area if the floating dipstick is low when you open it. Only open the expansion tank when the engine has cooled down, never open when hot. The following is the procedure to bleed the system. 1. Start car and get up to operating temperature. 2. Set heater fan and temp to full (so full fan and 90 degrees) 3. Set the temp wheel between the vents to the 3 red dots for full heat 4. Open bleed screw (located near expansion tank) and watch for air bubbles 5. Close bleed screw when clean flow of coolant with no bubbles 6. Let engine cool down, check the coolant level and top up as necessary. (use BMW approved coolant) If it was severely low, try and eventually determine the cause. If this does not help the issue then you likely have a direction switch issue (three buttons that control direction) or you have an actuator issue (motors and arms which control the flaps.)
Dan Tsuchiya Almost got it I Checked the Coolant and Bled the system I have low Heat coming from the top of the dash and the front window will defrost Its like a luke warm but still no heat from the front vents and foot wells. I'm just gonna have a mechanic check it out. Thanks for everything and do you have any other tips! I got luke warm heat for a good 5 minutes from the top vents enough to defrost the front window and then no more heat. The rear defrost still doesn't work and as i mentioned before no heat from main vents and foot wells!
Raheem Williams Yes, have a mechanic pressure test the system, it sounds like you have a leak some place, a lot of times the expansion tank goes or the side tanks of the radiator. It could also be you need to re-bleed the system because it may take 2-3 cycles to get air completely out. If there is even a pinhole leak, your system will create air bubbles and you'll be back to square one. The pressure test will reveal if there is a leak. There are other things like temp sensor, thermostat, heater core clogged which may cause these conditions but your best bet is to get it to a good mechanic and have it checked out, good luck.
@@SirFixAlotAutos GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS! AMEN!. Good Morning. I have a 2002 X5 E53, and I want to change the pcv valve and the air conditioning blower, the coils and the spark plugs. My question. What changed first? Thanks in advance. Blessings.
@@josemariacasillasuero8278 for the AC blower motor, that requires dashboard removal so that's a separate procedure independent of your PCV (CCV), coils and spark plugs. Do the PCV (first) and the coils and spark plugs (second) all at the same time since you'll be removing a lot of equipment to get to these. Don't forget to check your valve cover gasket for leaks while everything is exposed. Note that the PCV/CCV system change is very involved so allow yourself time and buy OEM parts. Good Luck.

$127 for the blower motor and about 2 hours of my time with smoke breaks. BMW wants over $500 for just the blower motor and probably an hour and a half labor.
thanx this was a lifesaver!
Thank You!!!!! You succeeded where other videos failed. I was so frustrated until I watched this. THIS is the proper way to do this job.
@Dan Tsuchiya True that!!!! But the clearance really affected the cover more than the blower, in my experience.
Thanks Dan. Yep, squeally motor I have, and I was looking to obtain a new one and realized I was looking at wrong motor (control unit motor) when I watched this vid. Ppl like you are to be commended for taking the time/making the effort, hats off! . Thank you very much again.
Glad it helped, thank you for watching.
Thanks for the emphasis, I probably didn't state it as much as I should have. Thanks for watching.
Dan Tsuchiya thanks your video really gave me for site and made it easier. 👍
Very similar to doing the E36, took three hours, but saved shit loads of money. Could probably do it in half the time now.

How long did the whole project take?
Awesome and complete video. Saved a boat load of cash since I could do this work myself. Thanks again!
Thank you, brother, for the accurate explanation. May God grant you success for doing good
Just what I was hoping to find. Well done and a big help. Thank you.
Thank you for your generosity.I was immensely helped by your video. May good karma follow you every where you go my friend.
Thanks Raymond, glad it helped :)
This was a great help. Made the job a whole lot easier. Thanks so much
Awesome Danny, glad it helped!
Excellent, watching Your video it took Me an hour to get and put the new 1 , huge thanks
Awesome, glad it helped :)
Since you have removed all the parts, it is good idea to properly clean the AC evaporator at the same time.
Where is the AC evaporator? Thanks
Where is the AC evaporator, and what does it look like? Thanks
Great video. Followed the video and it was everything you said down to the letter. excellent.
Thanks, glad it helped. Save $$.
One thing I found that created was the fact that the plug on the replacement fan had a 90 degree plug!! Beleive me it will not connect. My take-away is to make sure the new fan you get has the same type plug as the old one (configuration).
Also take note of the position of the vent door and how it is located.
it's like gymnastics for mechanics....intimidating for a newbie....
Great informative, instructional video thanks!!
Thanks NailDoctor, Oh if I only had 10% of the money that Ray Ramano has....
Spazzz - if you take your time 2-3 hours, the good thing is there's nobody to charge but yourself.
Simple Barney instructions. Excellent video.
Nice video Dan, just ordered a new blower motor so will be doing the install at the weekend. Many thanks
Hope it will help, Good Luck!
It's easier to put the strap on the back of the bracket before mounting the blower motor. After that, I used a small piece of duct tape to hold the screw at the top of the back to keep it from falling into the AC. I didn't have a magnetic torx tip.
That one is pretty tough to reach and work with. If you hold a magnet to the steel shaft of the Torx, it will magnetize it ;)
Thanks, just what I was looking for 👍
Thanks. Helped a lot!
very helpful. But putting the clips of the cover back in was the worst part! Took me like 30 minutes before I found the "trick" :p
Thanks for the video, it was right on!!!! e46 325ci
Glad it worked out.
It's really not cool to skip the install
Hi, thank you. This is excelent. Is there much difference for the E60 2006? What is I only lubricate the bearings? Thank you. Keep up!
Good Luck.
Thank you for the reply! Much appreciated.
how did you get the motor blower electrical connector plugged in? I cant seem to get min to plug in someone else has replaced it before and I think it is bent up a little.
Take a look at the receiving end of the fan connector and then look at the power side and make sure they are essentially the same pins located in the same area....like a mirror. if your fan side has a different plug or has a different number of receptors/spades, then you have received a blower fan from a different model/year. Also check to see if someone actually replaced the plug on the power side (look for electrical tape and a splice in the line.)
Nice work! Thanks for that share!!!
Awesome vid, bro!
Now I can help a buddy.
Where can i find The magnet tool?

Thanks for the kind words, hope it saved some $$
Great job. Hey does these bmws have blend door actuators??
I believe they do, on the e46 they seem to have an actuator , they are no longer cable controlled.
My blower makes noises like a 2001 car should. It seems to be good for now, but liked and favorited for later anyhow.
I'll probably go the process with soap just get rid of that Crayola Crayon smell that's been stuck in the car since I purchased it. And to get some good practice.
Great, good luck and hope you can get to it when you have time.
I am wondering how is this happening that you uploaded the video in 2013 and back then it looked like today's at least 720p and now almost 9 year laters the quality is similar to 80's VHS :D does youtube work like that?
nice job on the video!
Just to say thank you very much!
You're welcome and I hoped the video helped.
Dan Tsuchiya Absolutely!
Glad it helped Jimmy, save $$
Thanks for the video. You saved me big $$$
Button control is from inside the car, the little actuators are accessible when you go into blower motor area which I show.
hi, i was wondering, i have a 318d e46 from 2003 and i have this buzzing noise coming from the upper center of the dashboard
the noise is only there when the engine revs at about 2500 rpm, give or take 400 rpm. i've checked if the sound was coming from the enginebay, but in there i don't hear a thing, would you have an idea what this could be?
Dan, I have a 2009 328i and nothing blows out of the far right passenger side ac/heater vent. Do you have any recommendations?
Is it the same set up on a bmw 318i se 2001. I think my motor has packed up, should I also change the final stage unit?
The blower motor set up should be the same even in the 318i e46, though we did not see those in the states. With regards to the final stage resistor, you may want to change that first to see if it solves any issues as it's easier to get to (and in a separate location) than the blower motor. Good Luck!
Dan Tsuchiya Thanks for the info mate. I'll let you know if changing the final stage resistor did the job. I forgot to mention I enjoyed your video
Good Luck
Hi dan will this procedure work on a x5 3.3 2001?
Very nice presentation. My problem with my 2003 BMW 325i is that the heater/Aircon blower motor behind my dash sometimes won't stop running causing discharge to my battery. When I turn off the ignition key sometimes I can still hear the blower running. What do you think is the problem? Can anybody help me with this issue. Thanks!
KB, this is most likely your Blower Motor Fan Resistor, if this fails, sometimes your fan will not turn off even though you shut off the ignition. Do some searches on the Fan Resistor, this would be the first thing I would change. Good Luck!
I did some research and you are right. Ninety percent indicates that it is my FSR(Final Stage Resistor). Thanks.
awesome instructions! thanks!
Nice video good job !
Thank you. I did it myself
Congrats and hope it saved you some $$.
For what you changed it...? . To me when I turn on the fan for the air, with a firm machina, I flicker a little the engine I must to change it?
If you mean the motor for the fan changes speed, this might be the fan control switch going bad not the fan itself. Usually, the fan is changed out more for being noisy or complete non-operation.
@@SirFixAlotAutos thanks
can you see the heating radiator after removing the fan?
If you are talking about the evaporator, you can see around the blower motor case, but you can't access it unless you go from inside the vehicle and disassemble the dash. The heating element sits below that so you really can't see it, you will need to go inside the vehicle to access it. ua-cam.com/video/NPxNE7Od6Gw/v-deo.html. Unless it's leaking, that's probably not why you aren't feeling any heat from the vents.
325i 2.5, valve cover hits... guessing the “eco” engine, valve cover has to have to come off?... broke 1 wheel trying to squeeze new blower motor in passed it
you need to install a new resistor pack as well
Great suggestion. I had done just the resistor pack a few month prior.
اليس من الافضل استبدالها من الداخل حيث فك الطبلون و المقود
Translated into English: Isn't it better to replace it from the inside where the dashboard and steering wheel are removed? Answer, on the e46 Chassis you should go in from the Engine Side (easier.). For similar year 5-series cars you have to remove the entire dash.
@@SirFixAlotAutos Thank you dear sir
I have a 330 car and I suffer from some problems such as the fan is working direct and it is supposed to work after the temperature rises or when the air conditioner is turned on
And another problem, where the fuel consumption has become more than before
Great explain
What is the music at the beginning?
What size torx did you use to take out that first tray?
what is track name from the beginning?
For replace x5 fan its the same or you have to take of the Dashboard?
Dan Tsuchiya
If your X5 is based on the e39 5 series (1996-2003) the entire dash would have to be removed to get to the blower fan. On later X5's you can go in through the passenger side footwell and remove it from there: ua-cam.com/video/qiNe9rbgPe0/v-deo.html
Thanks
would a bad blower motor cause the foot vents to stop blowing air period?
+Marc Wikina If you are still getting air blowing from the dash and defrost vents, then no. You have a three position switch which controls the direction of the air, sometimes one of the buttons essentially fails even though the light is on. There could be an issue with your controls for the vent flaps also located in the same area as the blower motor or some sort of blockage/disconnect which is keeping air from coming into the foot-well areas. There are air tubes which connect to the foot-well areas which come down from the blower motor housing, make sure there aren't any disconnects there...but start from the switch.
Dan van you tell if i can do this the same way on 528i e39 1996 its so cold in finland :(
Igor, I think on the e39 you have to remove the dash and the blower motor fan is replaced from inside. There are a couple of videos already up if you Google "e39 Blower Motor Fan Replacement." It looks like it's pretty involved, good luck!
Hi Dan,
Question... on my X3 E83 2006 compressor is fully charged, compressor clutch works fine, but I am not getting Cold AIR...On the Vent when I had AC off/heater off and i still feel hot air venting out of main vent...even thou I have toggle switch on COLD...any advise?
Thanks.
I did one in 03 x5 i took dash apart could ive have done it this way the whole time?
Hey Brandon,
I would think the X5 would keep to the same set up, the Bavarians are usually pretty good about making things logical, but I have never worked on a X5. If your X5 has that similar tray that's taken out near the beginning of my video, then you probably have a similar set up.
can you tell if E83 X3 has similar way to replace fan?
Yes the pre-2011 X3's should have a similar twin scroll fan and the procedure should be similar. The actual Part Number may differ, but you can confirm that with your dealer prior to purchase. Good Luck!
Can you quote me a good price for a blower motor? Also, what type of motor are you using? I have the same model BMW, 330i, but it's a 2001.
I don't sell parts, but the Brand is Behr. Here is an example of what you need: www.autohausaz.com/pn/64118372797
Dan Tsuchiya awesome man! thanks! this definitely beats taking it in to a mechanic. much appreciated brother!
Thank you very much......
It's a tight fit either way, but you may need to pull a portion of your wiper system (area of current interference) first to get clearance.
Dan Tsuchiya yeah the wiper motor needs to come off
You wouldn't happen to know the exact part name to the black plastic pieces with the yellow rubber trim is would you? One of mine snapped and I need to get a replacement.
They are the heater blend door flaps, but you should make sure it's not the actuator (little motors that turn them) that snapped. You can probably get the doors new at a dealer, or get one off a wrecked car. Good Luck.
Thanks!
I have a 2008 335xi, is it all the same to replace the blower?
+edwardo Canela On the E90, E92 (2006-onwards 3 series) BMW actually implemented a better design. Your fan blower is actually located behind your glove box and adjacent panel. The fan is a single turbine and mounts vertically, it's easier to service and clean the intake area. Good Luck.
+Dan Tsuchiya oh ok.....do you how to actually replace it from there???
+edwardo Canela Seach UA-cam for a "2007 BMW e90 Blower Fan Replacement" and there is a guy that made a video on how to do it. Good Luck.
My 325 fan is not blowing at all. Could it be a fuse?
It may be the fuse (easy to check) but also could be the Resistor: ua-cam.com/video/7_D-Ki_Kk2k/v-deo.html
Good Luck!
My time works and time does time not work, can you help me, bmw 330 2002 I I’m in Brazil
Tenho um 320d e46 de 99 por que o compressor ac atraca e desatraca quando devia ficar sempre ligado
2. Set heater fan and temp to full (so full fan and 90 degrees)
3. Set the temp wheel between the vents to the 3 red dots for full heat
4. Open bleed screw (located near expansion tank) and watch for air bubbles
5. Close bleed screw when clean flow of coolant with no bubbles
Do you know the flat rate on this job?
Sorry I don't but I would suspect it's 3-4 hours multiplied by your area shop rate.
GOD BLESS ALL! AMÉN!.
Hi, Mi BMW X5 e53 2002 3.0, is the procedimiento?
Thanks.
No, this procedure will not work on your X5, you have to remove your entire dashboard.
Thanks very much.
Good Luck.
