  • I finally finished installing the YAESU FT-857 with ATAS-120A antenna on my car.
    The antenna works fine and tuning is a piece of cake.
    I’ll explain a little bit of the operation, make a couple of qso and talk through the optional microphone MH-59 A8J.

    I need to say you did an excellent video. I have the Is same radio with the ATAS100. I used to have the FT100 That had a much larger display. I also have that same microphone But forgot how to use all those features.Thanks for the refresher.

    The FT-857 is very tactile which makes it great for mobile ops.

    I used a little earth cable pinned in the mount to ground it to an exposed bolt on the car, worked really well and meant no need for grease like you have there.

    Excelente setup! Sem duvida que o 857 e a Atas são uma boa escolha para móvel. Um abraço

      Obrigado Victor, sim escolhi este setup para operação móvel. Tenho que dizer que a Atas da muito jeito sendo que se pode ajustar em qualquer frequência. Também o rendimento não é nada mal. Consigo ser escutado com bastante facilidade.

    Try adding a 3' patch cord and see if it will auto tune 10 mhz. Your ATAS 120 is much faster than my old ATAS100

    will the 857 tune shortwave frequencies or CB if you have an appropriate antenna?

    • @Sky1
      @Sky1 Місяць тому

      Just tune to a nearby band. I tune to 40 meters or 30 to hear SW. If unlocked you can tune exactly there but wouldnillegally tx 7 watts there for a few seconds

    I think if you get the correct Duplexer you can use 2mtr/70cm's as well!

    • @IZ0MTW
      @IZ0MTW  8 місяців тому

      yes that is true. When the Atas is fully retracted is presenting resonance on those two bands. I’ve installed a dedicated VHF/UHF with its own fixing base on the other side of the trunk cause a duplexer like that is more expensive.

      I am looking at one and it adds £60 to the project! Not really happy that the antenna doesnt come with a mount either.. I have a gutter/rail one to try and looking at the tripple magnet ones.. ATB - 73!

      @@IZ0MTW Before I finished reading your response, I was going to comment that there are some duplexers with lower insertion loss than some of my cheaper coax adapters, but as you said...that cost more. Having a dedicated line is just fine, though, since you'd do better with a 5/8th on 2m anyways. Digging the video. 73 de W4PHO

    U could get rid of the speaker cable and plug into the headphone jack on the side of the radio.

      can prob plug into your car's head unit as you described in your video! (sorry I hadn't gotten that far when I put the first comment up! ;) )

    How keep theft of thre antenna when you leave your car?

      About 30 years ago Diamond sold a "fold-over" mount that would allow one to fold the ATAS120 (or any other antenna) into the trunk (boot). Much to my sorrow, for reasons unknown Diamond quit manufacturing them and they have since become Unicorns!
      After about 25 years of use, mine finally broke and cannot be repaired. I had found precisely ONE on eBay but sadly I wasn't quick enough to snag it! I spent a few hours today reinstalling my ATAS onto a trunk lid mount, but I no longer live in the Chicagoland area, instead having decamped to southwest Arkansas where my house is located in the Hot Springs National Park. Lots of trees and tons of room for antennas!
