Hi y'all and Happy Sunday! I wanted to have a quick chat about a question I get a lot. Are you too old to go back to college for accounting? Are you too old for public accounting? Are you too old to start an industry accounting job? I'm going to give you my 2 cents but please know, you can do ANYTHING you put your mind/ determination to, it's all about mindset.

I took my CPA exam when I was 39. I migrated to the US when I was 31 and am not an accounting major graduate. I took classes at the community college and university extension program to satisfy the accounting and business credits requirements. I could not afford to go back to college in the US at the time and did not want to take student loan. I procrastinated a few years after I satisfied the credits and did not take the exam until I was 39. Took the audit exam twice. Now I am a 52 years old CPA and a Senior Tax Manager at a mid-sized regional accounting firm, and I am blessed to be able to get a second opportunity in life. I am hoping to inspire others with my story. Never too late, as long as you know what you want to do.

Good for you! I'm also an immigrant, came to the US when I just turned 31. I could not afford to go to college until 37 and honestly did not at first think I would be able to do it successfully. So, long story short, I'll be 39 in January and just 2 courses away from graduating with BA in Accounting next semester. I also landed a winter internship with a large accounting/audit firm. My ultimate goal is to be a CPA. Already purchased Becker review course when it was on sale on Black Friday. My plan is to start studying after my busy season internship is over, and maybe to schedule one or two exams over summer. Thank you for the video and an example! Very encouraging!

May I ask how you found the job at the accounting firm without the degree in accounting? I am about to finish my CPA journey and am worried that my major in international affairs will work against me... All job openings at accounting firms I see require major in accounting.
I got my master's degree in accounting when I was 26 but didn't end up starting an accounting career until now at the age of 40. It's never too late to start as long as you are not terminally ill with only a day or two left to live (and even then, you could still technically start a very short accounting career). You are the only one who ultimately decides if its too late or not to be an accountant.

Does a person have to work at the big 4? Where else can a new accountant work?
I’m 34 years old and 3 months into my first accounting job after graduating this past May. I went back to school after leaving avionics in the military. It’s very different starting over at this age, but I do not regret it.

I agree that you’re never too old to start in accounting. I just received a full time offer from a regional accounting firm after completing their summer internship. They even offered a busy-season internship on top of that. I’m also in a master of taxation program. I turned 29 recently. I networked with three tax managers that were around 25. Out of my intern class of 28, 6 were non traditional students similar to myself. Great video, thank you!!

I'm 31 and started accounting as well :) I switched careers about 3x and loving it so far so it's never too late! I know people who were 50 who started their medicine or law careers. Better to have no regrets when as you get older.

I started learning accounting at 25, will likely graduate(Bachelors) by 30 years old, and possibly CPA by somewhere between 31-33 years old. Don't let age discourage you. I find accounting difficult to learn, but so far it's been doable. I've done 4 accounting classes so far: Intro to financial, intro to managerial, intermediate 1, and intermediate 2. Currently enrolled in a tax accounting class. I don't have as much energy as I did when I was younger(Currently 27) and before I started having health issues, but that hasn't stopped me from learning.
I am 25 turning 26 this December, I have this job but I don't have the passion on it, since this is not my first choice. I plan to go back at school, start over in the accounting course but I am afraid of what if's. But this is truly what I want to do.
@@michellejaranilla8611 Do not fear, rather do what is right. If what you choose to do is the right thing for you to do -- then you will be able to pursue it boldly.
This is why I like government, I only work my forty and nothing more. We don’t have a busy season per say in the area I am at now. I have a spouse who is medically dependent on me and this schedule allows for me to be with him and care for him when he needs it.
Hi CindyRose! When you say government, do you mean like IRS, USPS, or DOJ? I'm an accounting student, mom, and a wife. I'm trying to figure out other options than public accounting.

Same age. I'm considering accounting but I am afraid it might be boring. Boredom can cause me to feel stressed, so that's why I'm a little worried.
Great video! I’m a CPA/senior manager with over 17 years in a mid-size public accounting firm. I’ve also dabbled in private accounting earlier on in my career. I’ve mentored older staff who started accounting later in life. Because of their receptiveness to learn and their positive attitude, mentoring them was enjoyable and I found that I really love to teach!! I do both tax and audit so I’m busy year-round! Thankfully my husband has been the best supporter all through these years. With three kids together it’s been challenging, but we’ve always managed and learned to prioritize family. Although I’ve recently turned down promotions, I know there will be the right time for it in the near future so I have no regrets. Who knows, maybe when all my kids are grown, I can start a new career in teaching accounting?!

When I was young and in college, it was the older adults returning to classes that were the most eager learners! I found them to be somewhat annoying at the time, but after my experience being a manager at a movie theater and having to train new people, I would welcome that attitude from any new hire. Now that I'm considering going back to school, I might just be one of them. I'm only 32, but time is not slowing down.

@@skatetoexplorevideos2477 I went year-round usually taking 2-3 classes per term. I didn't take an accounting job, because after I finished my degree, my old boss offer me more money to stay with a change in job title.
@@UncleJam5624 I just want to share perhaps a valuable opinion. I don’t know how much you understand odds but perhaps is better to leave the sector. The reason if one day you lose your job it would be much harder to get that specific experience. Accounting jobs usually compete with each other while the general ones usually take all sort of majors. This lowers the odds for the possible future jobs.

I think there are various career paths and agree if you want to go into a traditional linear public accounting role then there will be some of the obstacles you mentioned in the video. I think government, private industry and even smaller CPA practice firms are great options. Don't forget that many other non traditional firms and organizations will retain professionals with the CPA. An example would be financial planning and consulting firms. Additionally, if you are willing to take risk than self employment can be very rewarding.

I'm 29 this year I've been in the fitness industry for 8 years, been looking to change careers, I've taken an interest in accounting and I'd like to start getting into it slowly just to see if I'd enjoy it later on.
Hi Stephie, thank you so much for your accounting videos!!! I'm a non traditional accounting graduate student. I'v worked three years (neither in accounting nor in the States) before doing a MSA in the US. Sometimes, I feel like no any working experience in accounting is really a big weakness for me to land a job compared to my peers at college. So I guess looking for an internship first would be more reasonable for me. Do you think that employers will recruit someone who has no accounting working experience before? Hi Celine! I actually had little to no accounting experience when I landed my internship. I find that employers look for candidates who have any work experience while doing school bc it shows you can multitask and still be successful. So I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you're going into entry level roles. I have this playlist about finding accting jobs, but I can definitely address this in a separate video too.

Everyone keeps talking about whether you're too old or not to start an accounting. However people are forgetting one thing. That is, that age discrimination is illegal, it is a crime. That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen, but it does mean no employer can ever ask your age. And under no circumstances should you ever be telling your employer your age. In fact any information or dates on your resume that can even remotely give away your age should be removed instantly. That even goes for very young people since young people can be discriminated against for being too young as well. In fact employers don't really want to know your age because then they can be accused of age discrimination. As long as you look youthful and fit (and it's unfortunate that appearance does mean a lot) you should be ok. And if you feel like you were discriminated against based upon your age, sue the living hell out of them. They just committed a crime.
Your thoughts on accredited schools? Can you learn accounting from an online school or start at a community college?
I am 24 and have a degree in healthcare administration. Since graduation, I have worked as an assistant bookkeeper for a nursing home and now I do accounts receivable (invoicing) for a lab. I have realized how much I love accounting/ bookkeeping and am wondering what possible certifications you might recommend so that I can continue on the accounting path and eventually move into other industries outside of healthcare eventually? I am not looking to get a masters or another degree at this time. Thank you!

I got my MBA in 2005. Three women in their 50s attended at the same time and graduated with honors. None of them were able to find jobs in accounting and ended up doing data entry for a few years. During this time, competition was fierce for new staff accountants in my city, but as soon as someone saw their age, they weren't even considered.
I am currently two years in industry, I'm trying to pass my cpa exams and then apply to a regional accounting firm.

Every time I switched careers, I always got offers in any industry. I think firms like to see what experience you had prior and it's always an asset since new grads barely have any work experience. So i would definitely use that to your advantage.

Admin work needs too get done. Missing out actually somewhat suits me too a degree. While they are partying amongst themselves I will be either socializing with the boss, doing work, or my personal favorite just honestly staying at home.

Someone has kinda asked about automation already but I have my own spin on that question. I'm going into my 2nd year of a business degree and have to choose what to major in. I like most the options equally but the idea of accounting being automated puts me way off it.
Do you think there are any parts of accounting that will have to be done by people Idk how clear my question is but I hope you(or anyone in the comments) know what I mean

a clearer question -- are there any areas of accounting in either public or private sector that are unlikely to be automated? either they are too complicated for a machine only and need a human touch?

Anyone? One thing I noticed is that certain professions are protected and is easier to enter, if the student can finish the curriculum. I noticed this with medical, engineering, and accounting. Does anyone know if it is easy to get a job in accounting if the student just has finished the upper division (300 to 400 level) courses to meet the course requirement with no accounting work experience?I’m somewhat hesitant since I’ll be investing time and money but can’t really gauge the probability of getting a job after already a Bachelors in Business Administration and years of general finance and business experience.
But then again, I’m losing time and reserves and even with my degree and work experience. Is just too competitive for general business/finance jobs since they take all major sometimes… Not to mention candidates with connections who do not have the formal accredited education but was able to get work experience through family business, friends, and/or inside connection. Rumors states there are about over 100 applicants to 1 job sometimes hope the ratio is lower for accounting.
Changing to medical and engineering takes to long however I think I can grasp accounting much faster.

You may not be too old for accounting, but you will be too old for the Big 4. But so what? Small and Mid size firms are better because you are not as pigeonholed as you are at a Big 4, thereby making you more well rounded.

Great video; unrelated question for you: After reading and watching as much as I can about the profession, I think I would be very unhappy at the B4. I have worked and gone to school full time since the age of 16, and the idea of getting two degrees and passing all 4 CPA exams just to work 80 hour weeks afterwards is frankly heartbreaking to me. But I'm a junior at a large target school in Florida, with a widespread "B4 or Bust" mentality... It stresses me out sometimes and I can't help but wonder if I won't be as good or knowledgable or won't have as meaningful a career if I pursued a position at a regional firm, which is truly what I would like to do. If you have any advice or comments on this I would really appreciate it. As always thank you for everything!
Hi bud! No - you definitely don't have to go Big 4 to gain great experience and knowledge. You can still have a great career starting in a smaller firm or industry. Big 4 just gives you a leg up but that's not to say hard work, dedication and grit couldn't get you there, no matter where you start.
I'll do a video on this since it's hard to articulate via comment :) Do what makes you feel good - if Big 4 isn't that, go down a different path.

What do you suggest for someone with two bachelors degree in a non-accounting field and trying to get an accounting job with no previous accounting education or experience? I’m going back to school for an MBA in accounting but since I’ve been out of school for a while how would I get any accounting jobs to attain experience?

The age isn’t an issue for me..... but when did ordering food for everyone else become part of the job description? A favor every now and then, during busy season, certainly. Not an everyday thing. Nope.
I found it was usually during busy season. However if you're lucky enough to be on a client who orders food daily, even outside of busy season, but that's rare.

Wait why are you considering it? I assume most people do it to earn money but if your 71 perhaps housing is cheaper there are many 55+ programs that will bring the cost of living down even with minimal social security income.
