This song used to make me emotional even before watching "Chobits", but now, it's hitting even harder.
"Ningyo Hime", translated directly as "Mermaid Princess", is the name that Japanese use for the famous fairytale "The Little Mermaid". I was thinking about this story and "Chobits" and drew many conclusions.
First at all, both stories are about relashionships between two different species: human and mermaid/persocom. Both Chii and the mermaid are very naive in the human world, but they still want to learn and know more. Both love their human (prince/Hideki) selflessly and are willing to sacrifice anything for him. But most importantly, both mermaids and persocoms have no soul. In the story, a mermaid only could gain a soul if a human loves her very much. Of course, she couldn't achieve that: the prince loved her as a child, and she became sea foam. But the daughters of air decided to grant her a soul as a reward for her kind actions, and therefore, she became one of them.
In Chii's story (in anime, I know that the manga has a different ending), the ending is different: she actually has a soul, she is loved back by Hideki and grants it to every persocom in the world.

      @Shiki * Ningyo means mermaid.
It also means _doll_ which is what Chii literally is. A doll.
      It's clever.

Should be mentioned that the daughters of air was an addition to the story of the little mermaid much later, in the original ending she just dies.

Just sort of flashing back a couple decades to those carefree times of just sitting down to watch a full anime series. No big responsibilities, no big worries. Just a wide open future and plenty of time to slack off and enjoy things. Life is still good, but stuff like this from that era gives me a sort of melancholy nostalgia. So much time has already passed....

I wish Chobits was real. It's a sad depressing wicked world now. Persocoms like Chii would make the world less lonely place. A world with less "fake love" and more *real love* since humans don't do that nowadays but only those that do!... are Just the people who already been or in a relationship

I used to like this song for it’s depressing tone but later, it was bothering me that this was only a sad song to me so I had recently checked the English on this and it really lines up with the show in how the persocom Chii and looking for this side of herself.
I mentioned in another comment that she is searching for this other ‘Chii’ and this Chii challenges the protagonist to commit to her or something and that he had to, like, fully accept her and not like how other people accepted their persocoms as object but like a human being that you actually love and commit to. It’s kind of an “-or else” quality but it’s no problem to the protagonist because he already had feelings for her and was willing to commit to her.
Apparently, even in the show, there’s parallels to The Little Mermaid. I had no idea but then again I didn’t know “Ningyo Hime” was the Japanese title of The Little Mermaid. I took it as “Doll Princess”. Maybe there’s parallels but I liked the commenter who made those connections.
Anyhoo, Chobits was one of the anime that I really enjoyed; even reading because their feelings grow and the guy doesn’t reduce Chii to an object for his pleasure but a person and eventually gets this push by the other Chii to pursue her romantically.
It made me think about the Jungian Shadow that doesn’t necessarily mean “the bad side” but more the hidden; repressed side of a human and one of those hidden things are the want of human desire. We all want to be loved and to love but sometimes we have a hard time doing that.
But ultimately, we shouldn’t repress ourselves.
This song might have to do with depression and finding oneself in it but I think it’s both.

Let me tell you how this ending feels. If an episode of an anime ends and the ending plays you usually just go to the other episode of the anime and continue watching. But this makes you feel sad. Sad that the episode ended and you have this little emptyness inside you. Of course you could just go the next episode but the ending still would be sad. And this is why I love classic anime sm

    Pt.2
You must find yourself and in return find the person you want to be with and pursue that person. (I’m using the anime as a buffer for this theory).
Thing that made this possible was that the protagonist was already in love with Chii so he just had to pursue her than being so passive and ‘respectful’.
Some women who like guys want that man to make it clear and obvious; and pursue them; that a woman wants to make their feelings known but also be fully accepted and not rejected for the unpleasant side of them
; and not solely objectified by a person and yet to do so
    on their own terms.

Although I just found and watched Chobits this song bugs me since I first heard it...
Somehow the melody connects to a childhood memory. Nothing specific, just a feeling, like it played on the radio years ago. But I can certainly say that there never played music with Japanese lyrics.
Anyway, I can´t find it myself (yet). But since this is the Internet: Do you know a similar song which could have caused this confusion?

Just got a flashback as I listened to an anime at a similar time.
Things really changed for me so much.
I am oddly enough, happier and more honest with myself.
It’s been a ride but I have had myself considering more things.
This song isn’t so sad to me as it once was. The pace feels quicker than I remember and the attachment i once had to the song seems a bit detached.
It feels like it’s supposed to be sad but it just feels like a cool melody and a bit hopeful now. Before, it was like you’re in a pit but you see light.
Now, it’s like you’re out of that pit and consider from the outside the beauty of the outside. Sure the pit was what it was and that hope that kept you from giving up but, you’re ultimately just glad you’re not there anymore.
I suppose my predisposition is just a bit more angled that way as of late.
I am not happy all the time but I am not predisposed to sadness. I had done a lot of introspection, psychology research, inner child work, journaling, venting, etc.
My priorities are clearer, believe it or not. I still have particular issues but they aren’t dominating my life as much as they used to.
I do a lot of thinking but my thoughts aren’t as hyper focused anymore. I sort of miss it but I like the ease I have in being that much more flexible and honest in what I’m desiring.
Ultimately, I am far more put-together than I had been. I thank the attachment theory learning but all the things that I had learned which brought me to this point.
It would’ve been nice to have help back then but if possible, I’d like to help others as well.
Some people you cannot help as they can be too overly consumed with issues that their ideology makes it near impossible to reason with them beyond their troubles. Letting go has been one of the hardest things I’ve had to do because I have somewhat of a survivor’s guilt with my emotions and I wish I could help every person with similar problems that I once had but, it’s like a bridge.
Once you cross it, the other side remains hazardous. To return back or even attempt to help must be done with care lest you fall and end up in a worst state.
I understand that sounds harsh but my prior experience has taught me that.
You’re not in any position to help anyone as you need to maintain your own stable sanity and helping others haphazardly is like helping a drowning person: if you aren’t careful, you yourself could drown.
All in all, I still wish better for people and their appreciation of this song. I still return to it. It still is a time capsule of a profound story.
I hope people really get the meaning of Chobits and not missed the point and just think “sadness is cute uwu”.
It’s just much deeper than that.

Pt. 3 I think Japanese society; especially the women have an issue with depression. Their society doesn’t really accept mental illness and almost considers it a burden.
So artists circumvent that disdain by art. They do it all the time.
They did it in the movie, “Bubble” and they’re probably did it in Howls Moving Castle 🏰. Heck, same with Attack on Titan, imo.
I think it’s assumed that someone will pursue them as they’d like and pull them out of their depression but they’ve got to take achievable goals out of that state; with help. No one can chase you down and rid you of depression. It’s like a pit, via trained professional, can help you out of. But those involved have have passive support and aid them in simply being there and root for them; combatting their beliefs about themselves and the state of the world.
Your views in depression about reality are distorted so you can’t really trust your own beliefs about life. There is hope but that hope is very very practical and very very longterm to break those beliefs. It’s training your mind to believe differently in very small steps.
Maybe from a partner and maybe from themselves; but definitely encouraged by a specialist in depression.
But Japan, just given their media, has a big depression problem that we aren’t really talking about.
You can’t just get by in scenarios with “guts”.
But there are anime that really makes it helpful; like “Komi Can’t Communicate”. She gets help by taking very small doable goals to improve her life.

      @Theohybrid 14 днів тому

@@SSS-ie6mhWhat’s far fetched about having a professional help you with achievable goals and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, ya know, a _tool_ professionals use to help people out of depression?
Depression is a state of perpetual hopelessness enabled by severe suppression by their environment.
How do you even get out of that hole?
With help. What does that help entail? Empathy, strategy, and professional guidance throughout a long period of time; even with drugs possibly.
      That’s not that far-fetched.

    • @Theohybrid
      @Theohybrid Рік тому +2

I can only assume it means colorless lights.
In depression, colors and life loses their significance and thus seem almost _dull_ .
You seem to almost lose yourself and become someone whom you weren’t before. Almost like a different person.
The song seems to revolve around the singer finding herself.
It might be a significant other but it doesn’t elaborate on that so that’s why I’m concluding that it means one’s self.
In the Chobits story (it’s been a while) Chii finds a persocom that looks just like her and you can almost assume that this is her Jungian Shadow or her psychological ID; despite being non-human.
But the idea that I liked in the manga is that the protagonist had to choose Chii fully or…like the destruction of the world, or something and not just to treat her like a doll to be used but a woman of autonomy who might not be sweet all the time but to accept her anyway.
Part of the song is to not leave the other half, the repressed, hidden, half that isn’t always pleasant, to not leave that ‘person’ / side of herself, alone.
I think it’s running parallels of someone dealing with depression but also wanting to feel accepted; but more importantly, _not rejected_ .
Also if I can remember, this is when Chii goes missing in the Anime; which is probably what she’s doing because of this other persocom that looks like Chii. It’s calling to her and she has no choice but to follow that voice.
Ultimately, the verse, to me, meant that she is looking for herself throughout her depression.
      Hope that helps!
