This song used to make me emotional even before watching "Chobits", but now, it's hitting even harder. "Ningyo Hime", translated directly as "Mermaid Princess", is the name that Japanese use for the famous fairytale "The Little Mermaid". I was thinking about this story and "Chobits" and drew many conclusions. First at all, both stories are about relashionships between two different species: human and mermaid/persocom. Both Chii and the mermaid are very naive in the human world, but they still want to learn and know more. Both love their human (prince/Hideki) selflessly and are willing to sacrifice anything for him. But most importantly, both mermaids and persocoms have no soul. In the story, a mermaid only could gain a soul if a human loves her very much. Of course, she couldn't achieve that: the prince loved her as a child, and she became sea foam. But the daughters of air decided to grant her a soul as a reward for her kind actions, and therefore, she became one of them. In Chii's story (in anime, I know that the manga has a different ending), the ending is different: she actually has a soul, she is loved back by Hideki and grants it to every persocom in the world.
| remember borrowing this anime from my childhoold friend and I was around that age too. That mix of sadness and happiness is just on point for me. Good Old times.
Just sort of flashing back a couple decades to those carefree times of just sitting down to watch a full anime series. No big responsibilities, no big worries. Just a wide open future and plenty of time to slack off and enjoy things. Life is still good, but stuff like this from that era gives me a sort of melancholy nostalgia. So much time has already passed....
I wish Chobits was real. It's a sad depressing wicked world now. Persocoms like Chii would make the world less lonely place. A world with less "fake love" and more *real love* since humans don't do that nowadays but only those that do!... are Just the people who already been or in a relationship
It's my first "found via the internet" anime from 2 decades ago. Now nostalgia made this, the first japanese song I am trying to learn to play on the guitar and sing. Haha.
I used to like this song for it’s depressing tone but later, it was bothering me that this was only a sad song to me so I had recently checked the English on this and it really lines up with the show in how the persocom Chii and looking for this side of herself. I mentioned in another comment that she is searching for this other ‘Chii’ and this Chii challenges the protagonist to commit to her or something and that he had to, like, fully accept her and not like how other people accepted their persocoms as object but like a human being that you actually love and commit to. It’s kind of an “-or else” quality but it’s no problem to the protagonist because he already had feelings for her and was willing to commit to her. Apparently, even in the show, there’s parallels to The Little Mermaid. I had no idea but then again I didn’t know “Ningyo Hime” was the Japanese title of The Little Mermaid. I took it as “Doll Princess”. Maybe there’s parallels but I liked the commenter who made those connections. Anyhoo, Chobits was one of the anime that I really enjoyed; even reading because their feelings grow and the guy doesn’t reduce Chii to an object for his pleasure but a person and eventually gets this push by the other Chii to pursue her romantically. It made me think about the Jungian Shadow that doesn’t necessarily mean “the bad side” but more the hidden; repressed side of a human and one of those hidden things are the want of human desire. We all want to be loved and to love but sometimes we have a hard time doing that. But ultimately, we shouldn’t repress ourselves. This song might have to do with depression and finding oneself in it but I think it’s both.
This song is really bring the vibes of the deep true feeling of LOVE... it made my heart like been squeezed really hard and i cannot barely breathing 😣😵😖❤️
Let me tell you how this ending feels. If an episode of an anime ends and the ending plays you usually just go to the other episode of the anime and continue watching. But this makes you feel sad. Sad that the episode ended and you have this little emptyness inside you. Of course you could just go the next episode but the ending still would be sad. And this is why I love classic anime sm
Read a few articles about 'robot partners' being widely available in the next few years. This anime is about to become more relevant than ever as some of the themes and ideas, will be prophetic.
Pt.2 You must find yourself and in return find the person you want to be with and pursue that person. (I’m using the anime as a buffer for this theory). Thing that made this possible was that the protagonist was already in love with Chii so he just had to pursue her than being so passive and ‘respectful’. Some women who like guys want that man to make it clear and obvious; and pursue them; that a woman wants to make their feelings known but also be fully accepted and not rejected for the unpleasant side of them ; and not solely objectified by a person and yet to do so on their own terms.
If you think this is some generic ecchi romantic comedy wait until it smashes you upside the head with "my robot wife with alzheimers died saving my life from getting run over by a truck and I've never gotten over it."
I know this song from many years earlier - now when I hear this song, I see my girlfriend. Shie is very lovely but she keeps after as Chii. I want ro say for everyone the world, you will have your Chii sooner of after, but doesn't matter. Love your life, fellas!
I watched Chobits back in the day but never finished it since the site didn’t have all the episodes but I’m rewatching it now to finish it & I just finished ep 14 & this song fits so perfectly at the end

Sure the pit was what it was and that hope that kept you from giving up but, you’re ultimately just glad you’re not there anymore. Once you cross it, the other side remains hazardous. To return back or even attempt to help must be done with care lest you fall and end up in a worst state. I understand that sounds harsh but my prior experience has taught me that. You’re not in any position to help anyone as you need to maintain your own stable sanity and helping others haphazardly is like helping a drowning person: if you aren’t careful, you yourself could drown. crying right now ;___;
@Shiki * Ningen is human, ningyo means mermaid
@Shiki * Ningyo means mermaid.
It also means _doll_ which is what Chii literally is. A doll.
It's clever.
Should be mentioned that the daughters of air was an addition to the story of the little mermaid much later, in the original ending she just dies.
This song is incredibly beautiful 😢
Listening to this makes me feel 15 again. I’m 32.
Me too

I’d encourage you to read the manga. It’s trips away the filler. It’s pretty good.
But in all fairness, the filler in chobits was pretty solid and nessasery to flesh out the characters more
This song is so haunting and beautiful!! I've never seen this series, so I have nothing to connect it to. But damn
