The song is about his struggle with fandom. He feels guilt because he wouldn’t have the success he has now without those type of fans. But on the other side of it, that fandom makes him feel uncomfortable because they have formed a parasocial attachment (they think they know him. They are in love with him and want him for themselves). But he can’t be there for them and it feels unfair given all they have dedicated to him. The twist in the song tho is that Porter acknowledges that he actually needs the fans more than they need him (aka he wouldn’t be able to make music or express himself as an artist without them). So the song is just addressing the difficult relationship he has with obsessed fandom that he’s uncomfortable with but also needs to be grateful for.
I agree with your theory at the end a bit when you were saying it's a commentary about his fans. Especially between the different eras of Porter's music. He feels like he's lost a lot of fans depending on the musical era he was in. Which I think resonates in the last lines "Somehow I don't even know what she does now But do I wish her the best or do I actually miss her? She had hearts in her eyes She was rooting for me all the time Her love, the type That makes you dedicate your life Oh, my cheerleader Thought she needed me, but I need her" I think he's talking about fans that might've been obsessed with Worlds but didn't enjoy Nurture - do i wish them well or do I miss them? Dedicating your whole life seems like obsessive from the cheer leader but it's also basically what he does as a musician - dedicates his whole life to entertaining his fans.
@@claptivity tbf to fans. It can be jarring going from fuck-boi Porter era (early dub spitfire days) into Language, Easy and Worlds which were beautiful but still high energy. Into Nurture which was a very still, calming beauty in its own way. I've loved every Porter era. I'm one of his biggest cheerleaders 🤣🩵
😅 yay! I at least analyzed something kinda right. Ooo I think I should react to his other songs. I did not know that he has so many different genres! I can totally relate to him in that sense. I have so many interests and feel bad when I start turning my attention to that creative endeavor
@@LyviaXO_ Sometimes I wonder if I am one of the few normal listeners haha, others are like "Hey guys! We tracked where Porter last was! Also we have a leak from his song!"
You couldn't have said it better "he's like the now version of Chemical Romance but more DJ pop ... His music style is a blend of multiple genres." he gives me The Killers vibes in this video and lyrics. Also yeah it definitely touches on the parasocial relationship between him and fan by this "she" (referring to a symbolic fan like the cheerleaders). Just like you said, it's about fans who become overly invested even though they don't have a real connection with the artist. They neglect their own lives to focus on this one person, similar to the cheerleaders in the video. The line "better watch the time ... I'd rather see you burned alive" definitely highlights this concept. It shows how the artist feels pressured by fans who constantly demand new content and might turn on him if their expectations aren't met. I feel like when you mention it doesn hit with just K-pop fans but also viewers of streamers and other online personalities in general. However at the end of the song he expresses his appreciation for his fans. It's a back and forth relationship (you see the cheerleads eat him/sweets of him and him eating the cheerleaders) where both sides rely on each other, even if it's not always the healthiest dynamic.
Omg I did not notice those lines nor the food eating! Thank you for point that out 🙏😭💚 I do loveeee symbols. I hope he builds his self confidence more! I think he may also have some imposter syndrome 😢 I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought his music was like that. I was like hmmm Ima get cancelled if I say this-- Oh well 🤪
How did you feel about the sing ✍️💚✨?
Good!!!!

Porter is defs a deep thinker
Aweeeee i kinda felt like it was that! Hopefully he can learn to be comfortable and/or fandom stops with the parasocial but still support hardcore!

No wonder Nurture songs didnt get so much attention, and by far imo its the best album to listen yet!

@@claptivitysounds like a beautiful song tho !
This song is about his fans because he has a very cult like audience and him knowing he needs them just as much as they need him
🥹 atleast he is aware

Yo like if this song don’t win Porter Robinson a Grammy Award or something, idk what else to say. This song a WILD BANGER!
manifest that bestie
This song kind of meets in the middle, after his EDM beginnings and his more chilled out tones this is like his indie/pop punk/edm love child 😂
