  • In this video, I remove the bed of the Bedford Rascal Pickup. This enables me to get to what's potentially underneath, rust, corrosion, damage, flaking paint, dirt, oil grease..you name it! The point of removing it is so I can get to all of these things and address any issues now, before they turn into something worse.
    This was just the process of taking the bed off, it was hard work and took many hours, a lot of WD40 and sweat. After I got it off though, you'll be amazed at what I found underneath!
    You guys are amazing and you have helped me reach over 300 subscribers! I can't thank you enough and I am looking forward to achieving the next goal of 400!

    Great project!! When you polish the rocker cover try a couple of coats of lacquer. It should help to preserve the shine

    • @tristan7734
      @tristan7734  4 роки тому

      That's something I will definitely try and do, because I really want the thing to shine, I would love to chrome some parts, but I have to learn about removing them and then being able to replace them again, it becomes a little bit of a mind boggle. But you only learn by trying that's for sure.

    The diff pinion oil seal is straight forward enough to replace but the diff flange nut might be set to pre load the pinion bearing using a crush spacer so over tightening it will change the pre load but all you need to do is mark the nut position and count the turns taking it off then re tighten the same back on and it'll be fine.

    Quite good nick that! Now you have access sort the diff leak out, change your gearbox oil etc and clean and derust. Jobs a hood un 👍

    • @tristan7734
      @tristan7734  4 роки тому

      I plan to do exactly that, as there is a lot of corrosion it is difficult, but I will get it off and change the oil and seal.

      Yes the hammerite seems to have been useless and the rest is coming back through again. so it looks like I'm going to have to go back again and this time please treat it before I paint it but this is going to have to wait until the next time.

    Your doing a great job brother... Lookup this stuff called pour15. It's a rust preventer and stops rust from getting out of hand. It's great chassis work like your doing. Just clean everything good. Maybe wire brush as much as you can too.... it drys quickly, kinda glossy. Its also paintable I believe

    • @tristan7734
      @tristan7734  4 роки тому

      I wish I had known about the rust prevention products before.I thought that the hammerite was something that bonds with the rust and then stops it in its tracks but I've now been told otherwise. Looks like I'm going to have to do it all again at some point.

    What battery are you using on this? I've inherited a rascal romahome from my grandparents, its not in the best state. Loving this content, I'll be rewatching when it comes to refurbishing

    • @tristan7734
      @tristan7734  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Callum it's just a standard car battery, to be honest it could do with replacing on mine, but as it still works I will continue to use it for the time being. Thanks for watching the videos 😁

    Your leaking diff pinion oil seal might be due to the breather being blocked, that's the mushroom looking thing on the axle case but changing the seal is easy enough but be careful that the diff pinion flange nut might be set to pre load the pinion bearing with a crush spacer so over tightening it will change the pre load. But its not a problem if you mark the nut position then count the amount of turns to remove the nut, replace the seal re fit the nut counting the turns. While the prop shaft is off change the gear box out put seal. Top the oils up after and good to go for another 30 years.

    • @tristan7734
      @tristan7734  4 роки тому

      The only problem I'm having with this is finding a new seal, I've checked all over eBay and I can't seem to find a new one so I'm not sure what to actually do because it does look like it needs changing. I'll make sure that when I do change it because at some point I will find a way of doing it that I take your advice and do it like you said. I want to make sure I'm doing things right because I don't want to have to come back to it.

      Try a local motor factors or Fleet Factors as they supply commercial vehicle parts as the Bedford was a work truck. There's a few Fleet Factors depots in the Northeast give them a call and give them your reg number. Also try a Vauxhall dealer as Bedford was a GM brand.

    I would get the bed sandblasted, i did a tvr chimera full body off restoration, after getting the chassis blasted it revealed lots more damage.

      Yes, I would like to, I would like to sandblast it myself but I require a decent compressor and a blaster and somewhere to do it all.

    It must be light as a feather with the Romahome body and flat bed off. It's a good job it has a weight at the back as you said it would tip over when you brake. I can't imagine what would happen to you if it didn't.

    • @tristan7734
      @tristan7734  4 роки тому +1

      Without the Romahome body on, the pickup is nippy. Without the bed on also, the pickup is a rocket 😁 I think the engine is putting out around 40 - 45hp but there is no weight. Some people remove the weights and perform stoppies, not my idea of fun but each to their own.

      @@tristan7734 You would be tasting the road if you went too fast and braked heavily. What speed will the Romahome cruise at? the gearing is quite short on Rascals.
