I just want to see a logo ranking purely based on design and aesthetic. Using a team’s iconic history as a factor stacks the deck in favor of original six franchises.

well heritage has to play a part. the history factor is what makes a logo so revered, and iconic, its what gives the logo its meaning. saying history shouldnt be a factor is moronic, yeah it favours older teams but its also one of the most important parts of logos.
I don't think people realise that the Blackhawks logo is dedicated and symbolizes a Sauk leader, Black Hawk. It's not disrespectful at all yet somehow this new generation thinks its the equivalent of the Redskin logo in the MLB...

The Blackhawks name is not named after the tribe, but a WW1 division- the Blackhawk division- that the owner fought in. The division itself is named after a Sauk Chief named Black Hawk. The team’s name was for a long time, two words (Black Hawks) but later changed after documents were found with the original name as only one word. And considering the team has gone to great lengths to go to insure that the logo is as inoffensive as possible, talking to local Indigenous leaders to create a logo that commemorates and treats indigenous peoples with the respect they deserve, I don’t really understand why the hawks are being put on the same level as Cleveland or Washington.
As a Chicago fan, I’m very disappointed in their omission to this video. If you had actually learned the history of the logo, you would know that there are no racist undertones to it. The logo and name “Blackhawk” is to honor the owners military division during WWI. Chicago has also come out with full support of Native American groups, going as far to ban headdresses from the United Center. Do better, Bardown.

You do realize that Black Hawk and his entire community were victims of a genocidal slaughter called the 'Black Hawk War' that involved the US army and territorial militias chasing down Black Hawk's band, including women and children, with gatling guns. Lots information here that is very true and very relevant about the logo. It was meant to be respectful, but also, not made by the actual tribe. . One thing we should also consider is the Blackhawk tribe themselves. As a blackhawks fan and friend to a family of Blackhawk Native Americans- I can tell you that a large majority of the tribe loves the name and logo..- From what I’m told anyway. But there are still some who don’t like like it. I am OK with it being changed and I think it will be someday. I completely understand why people find it offensive. But again this should be up to the Blackhawk tribe. It’s okay they don’t include it - but please include CHI in alternate logos.
I'm a Red Wings fan, so I'm ok with the rankings overall. As a hockey fan overall though what happened to the Blackhawks logo?? I'm not a huge fan of the team, but they're still an iconic franchise, and as such deserve a grading on their logo.

I have a personal vendetta against Chicago sports and I don’t like the Blackhawks logo because of it’s stupid smirk, but I do like the fact it’s based on the tribes that use to live in the region. I would put it as a C personally.
I'm Australian, I started following hockey in late 2018 after watching a biggest hits and shootout highlight reel. When it came to picking a team I literally picked the redwings because their logo looked the best (and because I saw a lot of datsyuk highlights). I soon realised I had picked then right at the bottom. But I've stuck with them ever since and now I am fully trusting the yzerplan.

As an Islanders fan, i think the logo is overlooked because the subtle things are always missed. The 4 stripes on the stick representing the 4 cups from the dynasty team and the "I" in islanders is placed on long island where the nassau coliseum is geographically located

I have no problem with the team keeping the Blackhawks name, as others have said, its based on the original owners WW1 division name, which was named after a well known Chief from the Illinois area. That being said, the logo is a goofy caricature of an Native American and I understand why some consider it offensive. If Blackhawks is for a WW1 division anyways, why not switch the logo to the awesome one that looks like a hawks head with the same colour scheme someone designed a few years ago? It looks awesome, and isn't offending anyone.

Based on aesthetics, *off* a jersey, I think Chicago, Detroit, Colorado, Minnesota, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Arizona (as the Kachina), Toronto, Vegas, and Seattle all look good. *On* a jersey, the Habs, Isles, Sabs, and Caps look good. Some of the teams have different variants of their logos that look better, and can very from a simple color change to a complete color change. For example: Vancouver's logo looks way better when the bottom half of the C is white, and as a complete color change, Edmonton's two-tone alt. is great.
NO KIDDING, they get so fired up about the 'C' in the Flames logo, the 'A' in the Avalanche, the 'C' in Canucks, and the 'V' in Vegas haha. They don't even notice the 'P' in the Flyers logo, such disrespect...

Most other logos except the wild have at most three colours. I showed each logo to my GF (who knows nothing about NHL) and she thought the Coyotes was the best, then Penguins and Sharks. Take that to mean she likes animals but she did not like the Hawks logo.

The senator's logo is a combination of a Roman centurion (general) and a Spartan shield design. Neither are "senator" iconography but totally understand why they chose to go this route
The Canadiens logo is hockey. That logo can never change. It’s simple but excellent. It’s an A. The Bruins and Rangers are both C’s. Nothing special. The Islanders logo is sweet with the Y used as a hockey stick.. something deliciously retro about it. Calgary is good… the Wild, Sabres, Oilers, Leafs, Wings, Blackhawks are all A’s. The North Stars had a great logo back in the day.. but my favorite one was the Whalers. Perfection.
As a Kings fan, I can't argue. Kings have alot of sicker older logos/style. The chevron, OG crown, Purple and black crown, Hell i'll take the Burger King logo too! Just comparing old jerseys and the colors we use to use, our current home jerseys are dull. My interpretation is that the Shield is for the fans to wear, we defend the city as the Kings play for us, either way, no way higher than a C at best.
A few things I want to say. First as a Kraken fan, I loved the logo when it was introduced but now, it’s more of a B the more I look at it. Second, the Capitals have the worst logo IMO. It’s just words. What the heck is that suppose to represent. The Screaming Eagle in the Red, White and Blue is absolutely gorgeous and it should be their primary logo! And third and most important of all, while I hate Chicago sports, that Blackhawks logo is so iconic and it represents so much that that city stands for. If you look into the history of the logo, it’s truly fascinating and honorable! (Though I would put it in a C cause it gives me flashbacks to 2015…) but, Bardown, I’m very disappointed in you.
I think the Caps should get rid of the current logo. I like the Screaming Eagle as the RR logo and it would be a very good secondary but I think the current secondary logo (the eagle with the capital building as the negative space) should be the primary.
I think that a good logo should display the team's city/location, sport and mascot/nickname without using words. Pens have to be number 1 for me, a penguin playing hockey with the Pittsburgh Marigold.
My personal critiques and what I would change. The Devils and the Flames logos should be elevated to the best -- especially when you look at the sketch of the Jersey Devil. Boston, Buffalo, Rangers, and St. Louis should be elevated to A tier. Flyers should move to B tier -- I was quite surprised when I realized that was a "P".
Jesse is 100% correct with his take on the Rangers. It's a D at best. If it's so iconic, how come they don't use it on any jersey, not even as a shoulder patch? It is no way at the same level as Buffalo or St. Louis, not even close. Also, the Oilers logo is worse than a C. People might think it's iconic because Gretzky and Messier and company won a lot of cups wearing it, but essentially the logo is a bright orange raindrop with the team name stretched out to fit into a circle. It's mediocre. On the other hand, the Houston Oilers had a cool logo. If Edmonton decided to make an oil rig style logo and incorporated an E and some hockey sticks into it that would be so much better than their current logo. I would switch the Oilers and Stars, and I would also switch the Predators and the Flyers, and maybe bump down the Leafs logo. Otherwise, it's a pretty good list.

I have a personal vendetta against Chicago sports and I don’t like the Blackhawks logo because of it’s stupid smirk, but I do like the fact it’s based on the tribes that use to live in the region. I would put it as a C personally.
I'm Australian, I started following hockey in late 2018 after watching a biggest hits and shootout highlight reel. When it came to picking a team I literally picked the redwings because their logo looked the best (and because I saw a lot of datsyuk highlights). I soon realised I had picked then right at the bottom. But I've stuck with them ever since and now I am fully trusting the yzerplan.
For the best and for the worst. When you choose a favorite team, you gotta stick with them ;)

@Adventures With Mongos there is no Blackhawk tribe… the team was named for the original owners WW1 division (Blackhawk division). Which got its name from Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk Tribe. He had a lot of accomplishments like fighting against the British…. If you’re accusing people of not knowing the history you should probably do some homework too.

I have no problem with the team keeping the Blackhawks name, as others have said, its based on the original owners WW1 division name, which was named after a well known Chief from the Illinois area. That being said, the logo is a goofy caricature of an Native American and I understand why some consider it offensive. If Blackhawks is for a WW1 division anyways, why not switch the logo to the awesome one that looks like a hawks head with the same colour scheme someone designed a few years ago? It looks awesome, and isn't offending anyone.

Based on aesthetics, *off* a jersey, I think Chicago, Detroit, Colorado, Minnesota, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Arizona (as the Kachina), Toronto, Vegas, and Seattle all look good. *On* a jersey, the Habs, Isles, Sabs, and Caps look good. Some of the teams have different variants of their logos that look better, and can very from a simple color change to a complete color change. For example: Vancouver's logo looks way better when the bottom half of the C is white, and as a complete color change, Edmonton's two-tone alt. is great.

@@baronbayne9899 I see your point. For me its hard to remove the history from the logo. Just browsing each logo quickly my eye fixes on the hawks because of the use and vibrancy of colours. Most other logos except the wild have at most three colours. I showed each logo to my GF (who knows nothing about NHL) and she thought the Coyotes was the best, then Penguins and Sharks. Take that to mean she likes animals but she did not like the Hawks logo.

All of the detail in the current Maple Leafs logo has a meaning behind it. The Logo has 31 points as a nod to when the Maple Leaf Gardens' opened in 1931. It also has 17 veins to represent the founding of the franchise in 1917, & 13 of those veins are at the top of the crest to commemorate the Maple Leafs 13 Stanley Cup wins. The Maple Leafs name itself was originally chosen by Conn Smythe because of the Maple Leaf Badge the soldiers of the Canadian Army wore in WW1, which is why when following the rules of proper nouns they are referred to as Leafs & not Leaves.

The Canadiens logo is hockey. That logo can never change. It’s simple but excellent. It’s an A. The Bruins and Rangers are both C’s. Nothing special. The Islanders logo is sweet with the Y used as a hockey stick.. something deliciously retro about it. Calgary is good… the Wild, Sabres, Oilers, Leafs, Wings, Blackhawks are all A’s. The North Stars had a great logo back in the day.. but my favorite one was the Whalers. Perfection.

As a Kings fan, I can't argue. Kings have alot of sicker older logos/style. The chevron, OG crown, Purple and black crown, Hell i'll take the Burger King logo too! Just comparing old jerseys and the colors we use to use, our current home jerseys are dull. My interpretation is that the Shield is for the fans to wear, we defend the city as the Kings play for us, either way, no way higher than a C at best.
A few things I want to say. First as a Kraken fan, I loved the logo when it was introduced but now, it’s more of a B the more I look at it. Second, the Capitals have the worst logo IMO. It’s just words. What the heck is that suppose to represent. The Screaming Eagle in the Red, White and Blue is absolutely gorgeous and it should be their primary logo! And third and most important of all, while I hate Chicago sports, that Blackhawks logo is so iconic and it represents so much that that city stands for. If you look into the history of the logo, it’s truly fascinating and honorable! (Though I would put it in a C cause it gives me flashbacks to 2015…) but, Bardown, I’m very disappointed in you.
I think the Caps should get rid of the current logo. I like the Screaming Eagle as the RR logo and it would be a very good secondary but I think the current secondary logo (the eagle with the capital building as the negative space) should be the primary.

I think that a good logo should display the team's city/location, sport and mascot/nickname without using words. Pens have to be number 1 for me, a penguin playing hockey with the Pittsburgh Marigold.
My personal critiques and what I would change.
The Devils and the Flames logos should be elevated to the best -- especially when you look at the sketch of the Jersey Devil.
Boston, Buffalo, Rangers, and St. Louis should be elevated to A tier.
Flyers should move to B tier -- I was quite surprised when I realized that was a "P".

People might think it's iconic because Gretzky and Messier and company won a lot of cups wearing it, but essentially the logo is a bright orange raindrop with the team name stretched out to fit into a circle. It's mediocre. On the other hand, the Houston Oilers had a cool logo. If Edmonton decided to make an oil rig style logo and incorporated an E and some hockey sticks into it that would be so much better than their current logo. I would switch the Oilers and Stars, and I would also switch the Predators and the Flyers, and maybe bump down the Leafs logo. Otherwise, it's a pretty good list.
The flying P is iconic, it's a work of art. But yeah, sure, a leaf for Leafs and a coyote head for Coyotes is definitely better.

Why is Chicago not included in this video? They are a part of the league and need to be in it. If you are saying it’s because their logo is “racist” that is factually not correct. It is based off of the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry Division in World War 2. Which was commanded by the teams first owner. This is a part of history and should not be omitted.

32:10 This is a common misconception about the Canadiens logo. The H in the middle stands for hockey, not habitant. The official name is Le Club De Hockey Canadien, C standing for club, H standing for hockey. If you remember the old CA logo, that was for Le Club Athletique Canadien
The logo actually contains 3 letters ,CHC. Blue outlining the white C and H for “Club” and “Hockey”, red C inside for “Canadiens”.
